    Hello, when i go onto Cura and update the firmware, the "upload custom firmware" isn't highlighted. why would this be and how can I fix it??

      Getting the same issue? I recently installed the USB via willcaddy other video but my computer wont recognize the printer or install any drivers??? Frustrating!!!

      Hi Rc Crossfire Studios :) I'm sooo sorry its taken me so long to get back to you! I have been working on a new business venture so I have had very little time :( Did you get it sorted? If not here is some things to try. Make sure when you install Cura (or reinstall) that the Arduino Drivers are checked. That is what allows the printer to talk to Cura. If you can't find the option then you can find the Arduino drivers online or the simplest way is to install the Arduino IDE (which you wont need to use but will install the Arduino drivers for you). Make sure you restart your computer after to make sure everything is loaded.
      The other thing you might run in to is another program such as the Arduino IDE running at the same time and blocking Cura from using the port it needs. So make sure everything is closed that doesn't need to be running and give it another go. Finally don't use any sort of extensions, just use a single USB cable to connect the printer to your computer. The more extensions and extra connections, the more interference in the wire so use the shortest cable you can get away with and try to avoid USB hubs and extensions. I hope this helps and again my apologies for being so behind! Thanks a lot for watching :)

    so is there a video or page of how to build the firmware files? true that $4 is not a lot EXCEPT if you are working on a tight or zero budget and don't have the $4 to spare?
    I tried following the link Build ADVi3++ from Sources but you have to pay for that info (says does not exist or you have to log in) also I don't understand why there is a limit to how many can buy (how they 'sell out'). it's a download so can never really run out. seems more like a ransom for the files that being helpful, moreso as the how to build from source is also a paid page or removed.
    IF it all goes tits up can you revert back to the original firmware or do you have to keep trying until it works?

      well guess I WON'T be using ADVI3++ - asked 1 question on the FB page and he deleted the post and now I can't post or comment. guess he's only friendly if you pay.

      Hi dragonlord0666 :) I plan on making a video myself of how to build the firmware yourself as I realised after my first video that not everyone will have the money, especially after the current covid situation. Will get that done asap as I have had a few people ask me!
      I would check out the TH3D unified firmware for Wanhao as I believe it uses a variation of the LCD files but the main firmware is the TH3D unified firmware, so it's the best of both worlds! Here is a link to the tutorial video: th-cam.com/video/ksQj5VW_SLs/w-d-xo.html
      As far as I can see, there isn't really a good way (if possible at all) of backing up the firmware as the LCD firmware would also need to be backed up. So I would study the video mentioned above and see if that is the way you want to go before committing yourself to the update! Although I would highly recommend the update to either firmware as it gives you many safety and quality of life features :)
      Hope this helps! Thanks for watching :)

    Hi. The title of the video says "Wanhao Duplicator i3 Firmware" but from what I see this process is for the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus, not for the i3 which is a different model. Am I wrong or is it compatible? Thanks, great tutorial.

    • @willcaddy
      @willcaddy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi JaviPSantos :) Good spot! That is supposed to be "Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus"! I shall change it now :) As for the original i3 printer, it is a very similar process to updating the firmware on a Creality Printer. I have a video about updating the Creality CR10s firmware which might give you a idea :) (Link here: th-cam.com/video/l4I8b5-71rk/w-d-xo.html). Also there is a set of guides relating to the Wanhao i3 on their website, have a look down till you find number 32 "How to Flash the firmware to Melzi board?" (Link here: bit.ly/3qdaZd4) and that should tell you all you need to know :) Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      Hey Michael :) Thanks for letting me know! I have been pretty busy this last year and haven't been keeping up with things! That does sound like a great idea though! Especially with some people reporting Cura giving them some problems with the update. I shall try and find the time soon to record an update video with the new firmware :) Thanks a lot for your continued support of the channel and thanks for watching :)

    • @willcaddy
      @willcaddy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi :) Yes it does but you have to enable it in the config. You would have to download the unpacked version and change it in, I believe, the configuration.h file inside of the Arduino environment. I didn't enable it on mine because it constantly writes to the SD card to enable this to work which wears out the SD card a lot faster. Thanks for watching! :)

    • @willcaddy
      @willcaddy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm really sorry I missed this! My comments seem to be getting buried and i keep missing them :( If you have the original Wanhao duplicator i3 then you may need to burn the bootloader first before you can flash the firmware. This isn't too hard but does require a second Arduino. Here is a good video on the subject (he is using a maker select but its the same process): th-cam.com/video/ejpSniiJejI/w-d-xo.html . Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Why do you not show what files you downloaded, looking at the petreon member site there are many to select from how do you know which one to select? you missed a crucial step in not showing that. Please advice its for a Cocoon creat printer from Aldi.

    • @PoodlePuncher
      @PoodlePuncher 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 3:00 he points out to choose your firmware from the list (step 4). There are several printers supported, so it would be bad for him to specify exactly which file, because it might not be right for yours. The instructions on the patreon page will walk you through the whole process.

    • @willcaddy
      @willcaddy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to reply but @PoodlePuncher (great name btw xD) beat me too it lol
      He is correct, there are a few different variants of printer so have a read down of the instructions and make sure you pick the file that is for your model of printer as there are some subtle changes between them.
      Thank you both for watching :)

    Guys i did upgrade the firmware all good, the problem i had before upgrading the firmware was touch screen was not responsive. was hoping upgrading firmware will fix it but it did not.
    So i bought a new screen and changed it, this brand new factory supplied screen does not even light up...no display at all and recommendations on what i should do Thanks. MA

    • @willcaddy
      @willcaddy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there m a, Would you be able to give some info about what screen you got and where you got it from? I believe it has to be one from Wanhao as they have programmed the screen to work with the printer. You would also need to re-flash all the images to the screen too as it will be set up for Wanhao's firmware. Let us all know how you get on :) Thanks for watching :)

      Yea I see what you mean, he does great work and I was a patreon for a good while but with the COVID situation I was saving money where I could. So I didn't spot that the lower tiers had ran out. I need to update my firmware again anyway so I'll make a follow up video with the instructions of how to compile the hex file you need. Hey :) it is called a Balco 3D Printer Touch but it is a rebrand of the Wanhao i3 plus. It is exactly the same in every way apart from not having a usb by default. The board inside even says Wanhao :) Maker Select, Cocoon Create and Balco are all rebrands of the Wanhao printers with slight differences for each region. Balco is usually UK, Cocoon Create is usually Australia and I think Maker Select is USA? Although not sure on that last one. Hope this has helped and thanks for watching :)
