I’m so glad Neil Finn got on board with this version - I absolutely love it. I still play it in 2023. You can digest the lyrics even more because this version is slowed down. It’s beautiful.
Can not wait to see you in Bowral in April. It will be a celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary & Message to my girl is our song. ❤️ (still makes me cry)
My first "concert" 1981 at a San Diego theatre watching the fantastic Split Enz. Wow, they were amazing and something you can go back and bring a smile to your face.
Split Enz's BEST song! How can 11 people not like this masterpiece? Crowded House, Split Enz, Men at Work - simply AWESOME the talent from Down Under! This should have been a #1 on Billboard Hot 100.
***** some people enjoy rubbish by beiber and gaga and then there are others who enjoy masterpieces like this. don't forget icehouse and inxs, some amazing songs came out of Australia and NZ in the 80's
@@anfieldlegend During the 1980s the best music AND some of the most interesting movies came from Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Bands like The Box and Red Rider/Tom Cochrane wrote some of the best Pop-Rock of that decade. G-d bless the Commonwealth, eh?!
I saw this Concert in Brisbane , without Doubt it was one of the most Jaw Dropping Spine Chilling Concerts i have been to and i have been to a Lot, Must admit though "I see Red" was my favourite and i still get Goosebumps listening to the Album Its Called " ENZO " if anyone is interested
Holy cow - a choir, too?? Chills all over! Seriously, to me this sounds like how *that* feeling (you know, the one he's singing about) feels. All the welling up inside of feelings to the point of almost explosion. You WANT to to tell but haven't yet, or maybe can't....
Great stuff cheers Imagine being the woman this was written for... Lucky Sharon. Lucky Neil. Lucky us... Orchestras and Rock Music definitely do belong together. This is bliss
Hadn't seen this video before. Just beautiful with the NZSO. Hard to believe my favorite Enz song could sound any better, but Neil really makes you feel the sentiment behind this heartfelt love song. His wonderful, slightly trepidatious delivery really conveyed the song's message. Well done. Thanks for posting.
i don't think you could have described either version of "Message To My Girl" any better than you did (brilliant is IT!). if you were a teen when it first came out and remember it from then, and then see this version, it is a real vision into what life and love is in realiity. i've been married to the same man for 23 years, and this song speaks volumes to me, no matter how Neil decides to perform it.
Both versions of the song are equally brilliant. The original has the nervous introspection and urgency of youth, whereas this version has the dreamy nostalgia of maturity. It's like viewing the same relationship through the lense of age. The soaring finish to this song sends shivers down my spine. It's an emphatic statement as opposed to a solemn promise.
"I wasn't sure that rock music and orchestra would we really go along together"
*drops the most epic version of this song ever
I’m so glad Neil Finn got on board with this version - I absolutely love it. I still play it in 2023. You can digest the lyrics even more because this version is slowed down. It’s beautiful.
A song that can be performed up tempo, as a ballad, acoustically and with an orchestra - an absolute masterpiece, just sublime.
This is why I have loved this man since I was 13 and I'm 44 now. Good music like this never gets old compared to crap nowadays.
Same :)
Me too !!!

Can't get enough of this beautiful song...still in a lover's embrace...
Niel Finn is always so lyrically captivating... and Eddie Rayner is simply superb on that grand piano.
Neil just has that voice. There's just so much sensitivity in it. Just an awesome take on a simply amazing song.
Such a beautiful song.
A New Zealand hero, to be sure ...
Enough arguing... Australia and New Zealand both rock!!
A true genius.
Wow that whole orchestral arrangement gave that song a sensitivity that's unparalleled
Glad I'm a Kiwi . Absolutely brilliant. Thank you

My first "concert" 1981 at a San Diego theatre watching the fantastic Split Enz. Wow, they were amazing and something you can go back and bring a smile to your face.
I was there !! Hah
My first "concert" 1982? Kingston sport centre Tasmania. About as far away from San Diego as you can get.
You lucky dog! I was lucky to see Crowded House's 2007 reunion in a beautiful 2000 seat theatre in Los Angeles. I still miss Hessy.
A true genius.

Wow! I have always preferred Neil's solo piano version of this tune but this arrangement is absolutely perfect.
Oh, man. To say "this works" doesn't nearly cover it. It's magnificent.
Wonderful!
