An absolute genius.Words cannot describe the way Neil Finn can get a simple harmony, melody and hook all in the same song.As Paul McCartney once said:Fall at your feet is the greatest song he never wrote!!Never a tuer word spoken.I too can't wait to see Crowded House next month in melbourne!!
This is the only version of the song I can listen to, it’s just perfect. So raw and full of emotion, really shows why Neil is so highly respected by real musicians.
Neil has made unforgettable art that will live in our hearts and mind for many many years... its been a blessing to age along with him since the 80's ... God Bless you Neil!
Perhaps the combination of drugs and alcohol on the night buy I maintain that Crowded house were my favorite live performance ever. The harmonies were faultless the emotion salient enough to shake my attention. Music at its most beautiful.
This song is so beautiful, yet so desperately sad. Many people think it's a mushy love song, when infact it's about a guy who's deeply in love with someone who doesn't feel the same. She's in a relationship with another guy, but runs to Neil when things are getting rough. He's her shoulder to cry on, yet he wants so much more. These lyrics cry out with heart ache.. "Do you want my presence or need my help? Who knows where that might lead" A stunning song, but so sad.
Seen Crowded House many times over the years in different family configurations with brother Tim, son Liam and wife Sharon. They are my favorite. Still hanging on my wall, from about 25 years ago, is a Crowded House poster signed to me and Juli by Neil at Sam the Record Man in Toronto.
Saw Neil Finn at V99 then was lucky enough to see Crowded House at Glastonbury last year. Amazing band! The guys voice is incredible. Absolute quality!
This song brings me to tears every time...I just had to send my good old dog Gooby to heaven and I miss her so. Been falling at God's feet..I'm so glad he wrote this song
I’m 37 and an acoustic guitarist. Been into bands from my era Oasis, Verve, Pulp, Monkeys etc but now I’m loving Americana music, which has led me straight to Mr Neil Finn. I know it’s not exactly that genre, but it’s the story telling and songwriting what is getting me. This is one of the best independent performances I’ve seen of a song. How humble is he ?
That’s what MOST.. not ALL, but most music is missing today. The songwriting, the story..and the raw emotion... that’s coming FROM the artist. ‘Most’ songs.. even well written.. are written by 3.. ONLY THREE MAIN PEOPLE?!!!! Mostly 2 of the men are most famous. And then, same with the actual song itself, without the lyrics. Again, 2 men. I ‘think’.. not positive.. the SAME 2-3 men that write the lyrics for ‘most’.. of today’s ‘chart toppers’. They find.. or try.. to find a singer who’ll also be able to evoke these personal lyrics.. that the artist’s themselves haven’t written. But god daamn.. when the artists weren’t just puppets, and wrote their OWN songs, and lyrics.. of course they’re going to be able to evoke the emotions a LOT better.. then just some guy saying, “Here, I wrote this.. now, whhho will be able to sing it best and ‘bring out’ what it means.” I’m not saying there AREN’T any singers/puppets, that don’t do an amazing job. I can only think of a handful. But.. these handful that come to mind...ALSO have written their own songs.. and have written lyrics that tear at the gut, opening wounds..or just bringing out these emotions.. that leave you lying in a heap on the floor.. or in a haze. That ‘haze’ that leaves you tongue tied or speechless, ‘n the only thing, (at that moment).. are your thoughts thinking, “What..in the hell.. did I just hear; go through; experience etc..” Sometimes it leaves you numb.. if that makes sense. *EDIT* 😳😧.. I..did NOT mean to ramble, more like, babble on the way I did.. I apologize. Honestly.. I originally was just going to write about the part of singers/bands not writing their own lyrics and the story behind and the emotion. But then blah blaah BLAAH, bleh. I should probably erase and just write I was originally 😂🤪
a superb guitarist, one of them underrated guitarist, but also, an awesome song writer, and singer, this gets respect from everyone....wel done neil...
Neil was born and raised in Te Awamutu, New Zealand. He's moved around a bit over the years, but I'm pretty sure he still maintains a residence near there. His wife, Sharon, has an art studio in Auckland.
Neil is probably my favorite musician of all time. He is incredibly charming during his concerts, in addition to being a great, but underrated songwriter. Very good guitar player and superb singer. Have seen solo, w/ Tim and w/ CH multiple times and loved them all. I really like his solo albums. And any fan has to check out the '7 Worlds Collide' concert video. Lot of fun.
@SpencerIves Neil Finn's voice is both powerful and interesting and it doesn't take much listening to to be able to appreciate that. He only has to open his mouth and start singing for his voice to make a massive impact. His voice is interesting, powerful and the emotion he expresses with it is just incredible. This song in particular is just so moving and emotional that I sometimes cry when I listen to it. His singing seems so incredibly effortless and is just beautiful.
Thanks for posting. Brilliant song!! Very underated song writer and performer. I wish he would tour, I'd go see him perform in a heart beat. Just brilliant......
A lot of people give lyrical genius credit to the Bryan Wilson, Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan but Neil Finn is right up there with the best of them.
this shows how good of an artist he is! no band, no backup singers just his guitar & his awesome voice
yes
That's the why when I hear a talented street musician I stop to appreciate his work.
This is one of the absolute best singer song writers ever and this version of his own song is spectacular. Moved to tears.
Absolutely outstanding. An excellent composition, expertly played & beautifully sung. Neil Finn is up there with Lennon & McCartney.
Favourite singer-songwriter of all time.
Great taste.
thank god for crowded house. many road trips have been blessed with their music.
One of my favourite songs by Crowded House. Sounds even better when played acoustically!
He can howl with his soul open full aperture. What a talent.
Neil Finn's music has enriched my life beyond description!
One of the great songs of the last 30 years.
Paul never said that. but I do agree
Not many people can sing that well live and on the record. Amazing voice.
Such a clear and pure voice.
Neil Finn is a genius
Yes he is!
For sure
This is the only version of the song I can listen to, it’s just perfect. So raw and full of emotion, really shows why Neil is so highly respected by real musicians.
amazing artist. Thank you Neil Finn!
Not only is this song beautiful, both Neil Finn and Crowded House Desrve to be in the hall of all time great bands.....
One of the greatest song writers ever. Beautiful lyrics and amazing melodies.
Never EVER gets old. One of the greatest musicians of all time. Perfection!
For me, Neil is second only to David Bowie in terms of song writing
Neil has made unforgettable art that will live in our hearts and mind for many many years... its been a blessing to age along with him since the 80's ... God Bless you Neil!
love this song...what a voice Neil has. Was lucky enough to see Slpit Enz open for Tom Petty in 1981..what a dream ticket.
What type of person one have to be to dislike song like this?!
best love song ever written in my lifetime ,so much heart
Perhaps the combination of drugs and alcohol on the night buy I maintain that Crowded house were my favorite live performance ever. The harmonies were faultless the emotion salient enough to shake my attention. Music at its most beautiful.
Not only one of my favorite CH songs but one for all time.
Tears in my eyes...my heart burst with joy when I hear this... so pure...so deep....amazing!!!!!
Sat directly behind Neil at a david byrne concert in Auckland, before he dissapered halfway through the concert and got up on stage for a duet
What a song ,what a voice
Good God....I never and will never get sick of it. Perfect Song.
I want to smash my guitar and forget that I ever tried to write a song....perfection
Nah! You be good . Music is for everybody and not for sale .
Amazing voice and guitar.
This song is so beautiful, yet so desperately sad.

Neil has written so many amazing songs, and I believe this is one of his most beautiful.
One of my favourite songs ever, song by one of my all time favourite singers.

Stripped down and fantastic.
I love how he constantly reinterprets his work.
Up there with anyone as a singer songwriter is Neil Finn ,and I mean anyone.. He IS one of the All Time Greats Class Act, Love it 🌞⭐️🌞⭐️❤️👍🏻
The greatest music sounds so good with the simplest arrangements. Everything from Buddy Holly to the most recent stuff.
I'm sure this is my favourite version of the song. I have literally listened to it weekly since it's first upload.
Why it is only one of the the most beautiful sounding acoustic guitars ever made..... A Maton.
Beautiful
Still brings the tears

Americana?? Pulp/Verve/Monkeys? Something is very off about your comment. One's thing's for sure - you ain't no music guy.
On Your Own by Richard Ashcroft (hard to find upload ripped from an MTV live programme) is something you should check out if you like this

None of those guitars hanging on the walls can ever be played again out of sheer respect for that performance.
Glorious song - simple, touching and perfect
Still an amazing voice!
