People never think long-term. The people saying it's sad, don't stop and think how temporary living on 50% income, would be. They don't think how after that difficult period, things will be even easier than before they started that cut. They won't have debt! It'll be wonderful after that period, like you said at the end.

My debt is stopping me from following my dreams. That's sadder than aiming to live debt free (which we are doing).

thanks, Christina. My husband and I lived on a meager budget for several years to avoid going into debt. We had a good life anyway, and it set us up for how we can live now.

If all the things in life that bring me JOY also cost money…it’s time to check myself .
Nature is free, hugs are free, conversations with the ones you love are free, laughing all night is free, staring at the stars is free…just my take.

Most people are too weak to make hard decisions like this. They're so used to instant gratification and material comfort, it's like a drug for them. No one should care about these addicts and their noise, at the end of the day you know you are making the right choice that will make you happier and freer in the long run. Being in debt is hell, it's not worth the shopping trips and daily coffees.

I’m a shopping addict and while I used to mostly go Thrifting and look for things on Facebook marketplace, I had to cut down. Lately, I realized I have a lot of art supplies (drawing and painting is my hobby along with other crafty things). So I decided to give that a go and it’s going very well, I’m improving my watercolor technique, and I’m going to practice drawing more.
Other people can do something like this. If you shop a lot, you are very likely one of those people, who has 1 million of these pretty journals. Put them to good use. Maybe start journaling, maybe use those to answer questions that will help you get to know yourself, you could even make an aesthetic journal, scrapbooking using things that you already have. It’s much more rewarding than shopping because in addition to dopamine, you end up feeling like you achieved something rather than feeling guilty for spending money unnecessarily. There are so many things one can do with what they already have.

For 8 years my husband and I lived like this. We started out living in the loft above his parent’s garage. After 3 years we were able to purchase a small condo. We didn’t stop that lifestyle. Only paid for what was necessary. No vacations other than small weekends to go fishing. In 2021 we were able to purchase our house, and we still continued to live as far below our means as possible. At the end of last year, my husband made partner at the CPA firm he works for. The only debt we have is our home. This is the first year we’re getting a real vacation, and we’re starting to compile what we need to renovate our very old kitchen.
It takes patience and perseverance. In that time we also had our first child, which was its own set of challenges. He’s healthy and we’re in the best position financially we’ve ever been and reaping all the rewards.

As you say, envision your life without debt- without the angst, anxiety, guilt, fear, etc that goes with debt.
Envision doing things you want to do because you have the money to do them- going into debt for a closet full of clothing and shoes, a nice car, trendy/current home decor and furniture, fancy home and the like will not bring you the joy that being debt free will, which can allow you to travel (more), broaden your horizons and opportunities via continued education, etc

I’m living frugally so that I can pay off my private student loans (PSLF for federal). To me, it’s worth it. When I’m debt free, I’ll be able to go on more travel and buy things I want more often. It’s just how I choose to live right now.

If you don’t wanna increase your income-which involves working EVEN more, when most of us are already working too much for too little pay-then decreasing expenditures is actually a softer approach. I don’t understand how someone wouldn’t understand that short-term sacrifice is required for long-term goals, financial or otherwise

This is so true. Last year I spent the entire year putting 80% of my income towards paying off all my debt. I knew if I stuck it out for a year, all my debt would be paid off and I wouldn't have to worry about it or have to deal with the consequences of debt any longer than I needed to. It was a tough year, but I'm so proud of myself for going through it so that future me doesn't have to deal with debt.

My mother, who had to deal with a lot of debth incurred by my father's gambling addiction, taught us that there's nothing better than to lay your head on your pillow at night knowing you don't owe anything to anyone and no one will come knocking on your door asking for due payment.
Both my sister and I have lived by this motto all our lives, and you know what? My mother was right.

Living beyond your means or even just spending every dollar you have leaves you vulnerable (we aren’t talking about someone who is just barely getting by). If you lose your job, get sick or have an emergency, you don’t have any money get you through those rough times. Avoid debt and try to build up some emergency savings if possible. That peace of mind is anything but sad!

Years ago I went over a year without buying anything new other than groceries. And only purchased groceries if they were on sale, if I had a coupon and ate what we grew. Today we are debt free, it’s all about mindset. When you set a goal and have the mentality to see it through, it will happen. 😊

The sadness/depressed response Indicates a heart issue. Being content with what we have indicates an acceptance and thankfulness for what God has provided. Doesn't mean we can't strive to do bette but remembering that we're not in charge of the world. Being content means we don't equate are worth, our importance with stuff.

Unfortunately, people are obsessed with this belief that if you don’t spend as you wish you will be sad and depressed. Nothing could be further from the truth. I discovered it myself unfortunately way too late

It’s definitely eye opening at the beginning. It’s hard facing all the money and time wasted and breaking the habits/dopamine needs. I would say that it is sad but only because we are so used to convenience and abundance in America. My family is from India and having a few pairs of shoes is a luxury but maybe here you would be considered boring or unfashionable, but that’s also a message we are sold by corporations. I’m already appreciating what I have more

I’m debt free including the house - paid off ten years early when the Covid shit show first started. Saving 17.5 % into pension and between 35 and 50 % of net income. 🎉liberating🎉. Being debt free is great peace of mind too. 🔁Switching our thinking from instant to long term gratification does take practice & discipline. It's like a 💪muscle we must build up to get stronger, but it is worth every effort.
🌈 It's important to look on the bright side of things in the process. A positive, hopeful mindset & attitude impacts everything. Being thankful for our blessings can also make a massive difference.
😊Thankful for creators like you who are thoughtful about their expenditures, wanting to reduce their impact on the earth 🌎, & exploring clever ways to ♻️refresh & recycle their style.

I think it's sad to base your happiness on buying things. I mean typically if you are in debt it is because you've been living beyond your means (with the exception of student loan debt), so chances are, you already have more than you need. I am on a very low spend year and because I have not been so wise with my spending in the past, I already have so much stuff that whenever I even think about buying something I realize I don't need it.
