If he was being completely serious, it's definitely an off comment that should not have been made, but I do not believe for a second that this figure was designed & originally intended to represent anything other than exactly what it looks like, the Commander Ponds figure who absolutely belongs with Mace Windu and this version of gunship.
He also apparently said “we picked a Jedi, Mace Windu, and a Clone Commander, which also doubles as a pilot for this vehicle.” I understand where you’re coming from, but with part of the quote I think he was serious about it. I hope he was joking though.

I honestly think that’s probably what they should have made instead of this. The fact that it isn’t minifig scale and only includes two at that are complaints I hear a lot in regards to this set.
The imperial version shows up in the bad batch so lego might make another soon, but you might have to wait awhile for a republic one. (Knowing lego probably at least five years but it might show up in kenobi so maybe sooner)

Since these oversized UCS sets always come with their crew, it would have made sense to have 2 clone pilots instead. Not that Mace and Ponds are a bad choice, but it just would be more logical to have pilots.

Why do i feel like this will be the only prequel ucs set in this decade... Its a nice thing but i just have no space to display it anywhere Much rather would've seen a playscale one
I'll probably pass on this set. I'm not too happy that Lego still has quality issues when it comes to different pieces of the same colour being slightly different shades. When you spend this sort of money on a product you expect it to be top quality. It can't be that difficult to have a computer control the dye process to be spot on or close enough that the human eye can't see the difference. Excellent review as always!
I will happily take the occasional dust specks under clear-backed stickers over the horrendous regular stickers LEGO puts out these days where the background colour doesn't match even remotely to the piece it's on. Just look at the large wildlife rescue set reviewed a few days before this set... OOF.
I totally understand why plenty of Lego playsets aren't, and indeed can't be, minifig scale. Cost, playability, durability, et cetera... On the other hand I can't help but get a little annoyed when I see this, a USC set that could totally have been true minifig scale (or something close to, considering the disproportional nature of minifigs) but end up being too *big*. We got a properly scaled Falcon and Slave I, and I know that I would've loved a properly scaled LAAT. Would've been cheaper (or so I'd have hoped), and they could've allocated a little more of the budget towards figs. Not to say that this isn't a good set, it looks fantastic and all, but I love me some proper scale and the price of this monster is something of a barrier to a *lot* of people. EDIT: Damnit, shows me for not waiting until the conclusion to post! Basically, I should say that I agree with Jang when it comes to the matter of my preferred size for this sort of set.
I don't the mind the stylization as much with Lego since they already have stylized proportions. Hasbro on the other hand is dropping the ball hard with screen accuracy on a lot of their newer Black Series Clones, to the point where I mostly just collect Vintage Collection and older 3.75" figures since those are usually more accurate to the live action designs.
Phase 1 to phase 2 torso armor is so subtly different that even hot toys/sideshow will often just pack in phase 1 and 2 helmets with their sixth-scale figures to let collectors pick which to display. Great review, my set gets here tomorrow! Who knows when I’ll get to build it, need to find a suitable display space first.
Inspired by thoughts of other comments - you could totally do ASMR casual building. That could be massively entertaining. Just building, talking about ideas for the build, the function in your city, admiring how the pieces go together in a build, etc.
now that you mention the scale, i wanna see how kenner-sized figures would work with this. wouldve preferred a nebulon frigate from the vote, but this is a very handsome set
This set looks amazing, but due to the size and price, I won’t be buying it. I do wonder if they’ll make a smaller playscale set roughly based on this model like they did with the UCS Slave I. Fingers crossed.
Think the same, finished mine last night at 00.00 after 12 hours building Time and i gotta say the sheer size of this makes the minifig Drama really forgetabble at least for me but i also think that Mace actually is not that bad, he's actually the best i've seen so far, the Phase one Clone is also cool but what this set really is about is its massive size and the outstanding Design and really the only thing i had in mind after finishing it was "where the hell am i gonna Display this like okay probably above the UCS Milleniumfalcon but how am i doing that?
I think the most important issue is lego is essentially a toy and playability is key to any set but these UCS models are totally outside of the standard lego sets and are intended to be display models!
I feel the uproar about the mini figures is the fact lego did ask the fans what characters they’d like to see included in the set…. Then they come out saying that the figures are only a bonus and don’t include the characters with the most votes . Interested on your opinion about that
I had actually convinced myself to not get this set, it's so big, and I don't really have anywhere to put it, but JANG, you just flipped my opinions. It would be the space pressurised vesion so it doesn't need to the two beam turrets on the fuselage. The UCS version is so big, how and where would you display it Jang?
Agreed, I love the set and I know you don't buy UCS for the figures, but these are a bit lacklustre. Not as bad as the incredibly poor minifig choices made for the UCS Imperial Star Destroyer though, urgh!
2 years later and I'm still on the fence on this. I love the Clone Wars. I'm def getting the Venator so I'm thinking it would look great with the Gunship next to it. But then again
My issue with the doors is that they need to be a bit longer. When closed they cover so little of the troop bay, about 4 studs, but it should be covering about half of the stand-able area. It just looks kind of awkward when the closed form looks like it's actually open.
while trying to make this, i found out the whole set itself was much larger than i anticipated. it's absolutely huge. regardless of the lame minifigs, the rest of the set still stands out.
Really hoping for a smaller play scale model down the road in the the 200 price range opposed to 450. Still this model has really grown on me, and the accuracy is pretty well accomplished. i really like how despite how big it is it's still durable/equally swooshable. Shame about the clear back stickers, and poor matched colors. For as much as these sets cost Lego needs to really address/remedy these problems asap for future releases.

I'm sure people know this, but it's just like Rebel Friend: sometimes people just want a little bit of fan service, and it wouldn't have been so costly. That being said, there are a lot of people whining a screeching about it like it's a big deal there's not Jedi Bob, which it isn't.

Ask for replacement parts that’s what I do forget that we pay to much they can print it out forget that and tell them to darken the ink there is others that are darker I have seen at the Lego store it was more depth in color so it gets the right ink layer when they make them I think it depends on who shift it is at the factory honestly it frustrating to have to buy it takes about 1 1/2 weeks to get them but it’s worth it !
I've noticed light bluish grey pieces had inconsistently in their color just like the dark red, but it's a little less obvious, SOMEtimes. But I've seen a lot of that as well.
I love that they gave the Gunship so much love, but looking at your review.. and seeing the one I have and how I've modded it.. I can say, I'm good on just having a non UCS one.

@@DCLXVIDS Yes, when the doors are opened they act like brakes. However, when closed, the edge of the door should sit flush with the body of the ship, as I (and Jang) said.
That’s a very nice piece, as much in build as in size. Must be quite a fun moment to build it and play with it afterward. However, its size is also a major downside, you pretty much need to build a room around it to display it properly.
What do you think about how they packaged the landspeeder window? Mine was wrapped by plastic wrap and was perfect? Is this something they will continue? Also something that I think reviewers should note...Titanic came with cardboard cases for the manuals. Noone said this but it was huge for me
So I have the pieces to the two oldest Gunship releases from 2002 (?) and 2008, but I don’t want to rebuild those. I wonder if someone could combine the building techniques of this gun ship, and using some of the older pieces, could build two custom gunships that more closely represent the in-universe thing, but in mini fig scale.
I have this set from day one, I'm a big believer in opening and building lego sets, but this set with the imperial logo printed on the box incorrectly for me anyway it's going to stay boxed un-opened and I will buy another with the correct republic logo to build. I have two other sets kept boxed and all my other 16 UCS set are built up. Looks fantastic and can't wait to get another.
Wow that’s a big set, really good detail maybe good scale for action figures, I may have voted for this but I think we should have voted for the rebels frigate. I like others voted for this as many of us missed out on the play sets, tho this one is still cheaper then a used mini fig compatible. O well haha
I think I will get the Mos Eisley UCS set instead. I was waiting to see what came of the UCS Gunship and I personally am disappointed. Hopefully they will do a playset scale one soon.
Personally my favourite thing in starwars is the clones and my favorite ship is the republic gunship, when lego released the previous republic gunship it was my favourite set ever, so i was definitely hyped for the ucs version though now after seeing it reviewed, im not completely sure the hype was worth it, i mean dont get me wrong, its definitely amazing in multiple aspects but I personally wouldnt pay any more than £200 for this vs the previous version
i would have loved to see a clone wars LAAT with the closing doors rather than the AOTC version, they could have even included the side pods as well as the floodlights from the Umbara arc
I'm just not a fan of the design of this ship so that no matter how good lego does, I will never think it looks appealing. If I were to pick up an expensive UCS spaceship this would be low on my list to choose from. Thanks for the review JANG!!!
Phase 1 and phase 2 armor has no difference except the helmet, though there are a few details missing, such as two dash marks on the right part of the chest plate
They fit in the troop bay nicely. The side turrets are a bit too small and they can't fit in the cockpit because there's not enough space built in to fit their legs through.

2013 75021 version rules. Almost minifig scale but feels manageable and isn't a hulking nightmare to display. I got mine for £100 total on ebay.

They do have computers doing that. But computers have errors and paint isnt perfect. Theres a reason its only on certain colors

the 'doors' are air brakes kinda like on the snow speeder. at least that's how the original star wars vehicle designer explains it.
@@DCLXVIDS Yes, when the doors are opened they act like brakes. However, when closed, the edge of the door should sit flush with the body of the ship, as I (and Jang) said.

That’s a very nice piece, as much in build as in size. Must be quite a fun moment to build it and play with it afterward. However, its size is also a major downside, you pretty much need to build a room around it to display it properly.
What do you think about how they packaged the landspeeder window? Mine was wrapped by plastic wrap and was perfect? Is this something they will continue? Also something that I think reviewers should note...Titanic came with cardboard cases for the manuals. Noone said this but it was huge for me
So I have the pieces to the two oldest Gunship releases from 2002 (?) and 2008, but I don’t want to rebuild those. I wonder if someone could combine the building techniques of this gun ship, and using some of the older pieces, could build two custom gunships that more closely represent the in-universe thing, but in mini fig scale.
Really want to paint the shark mouth on mine from the original clone wars cartoon.
I have this set from day one, I'm a big believer in opening and building lego sets, but this set with the imperial logo printed on the box incorrectly for me anyway it's going to stay boxed un-opened and I will buy another with the correct republic logo to build.
I have two other sets kept boxed and all my other 16 UCS set are built up.
Looks fantastic and can't wait to get another.

Wow that’s a big set, really good detail maybe good scale for action figures, I may have voted for this but I think we should have voted for the rebels frigate. I like others voted for this as many of us missed out on the play sets, tho this one is still cheaper then a used mini fig compatible. O well haha

I think I will get the Mos Eisley UCS set instead. I was waiting to see what came of the UCS Gunship and I personally am disappointed. Hopefully they will do a playset scale one soon.
I just finished building mine last night and it took me 2 hours to find somewhere to display it cause it didn’t fit on any of my shelves😂
I built a hanging shelf just for it.

Personally my favourite thing in starwars is the clones and my favorite ship is the republic gunship, when lego released the previous republic gunship it was my favourite set ever, so i was definitely hyped for the ucs version though now after seeing it reviewed, im not completely sure the hype was worth it, i mean dont get me wrong, its definitely amazing in multiple aspects but I personally wouldnt pay any more than £200 for this vs the previous version

i would have loved to see a clone wars LAAT with the closing doors rather than the AOTC version, they could have even included the side pods as well as the floodlights from the Umbara arc
I'm just not a fan of the design of this ship so that no matter how good lego does, I will never think it looks appealing. If I were to pick up an expensive UCS spaceship this would be low on my list to choose from.

Phase 1 and phase 2 armor has no difference except the helmet, though there are a few details missing, such as two dash marks on the right part of the chest plate

They fit in the troop bay nicely. The side turrets are a bit too small and they can't fit in the cockpit because there's not enough space built in to fit their legs through.
