    I created The Idaho Painter an alternative to to big box DIY video shows that have actors who only act like they can paint but really can barely act. My mission is to shatter the barriers of entry into painting and convince people that it can be a lot of fun painting and painting fun little projects on your own without an expensive professional painter. No experience is necessary.

    I am also a paining contractor and spend a lot of time training new guys and gals how to cut in ceilings. I do use the tips you suggested as well as another mental trick. I tell them to repeat in their head the word "downhill" while cutting the line. Believe it or not it does work in keeping them from bumping the ceiling. Try it, it doesn't cost anything.

    Hey Chris, best of your videos on cutting in. I am a homeowner and have painted a lot of stuff in my many years and figured some of this out on my own, but you put it all in one great video. I hold my breath too...! I hate taping and it takes so much extra time as well, best to take your time on cut in's and you actually save time and frustration. And you are right on in using the right brush, that I have not always done so will pay attention next time. Thanks from all of us home owners out here!

    Good video. I am a self-taught DIY painter for my own homes. I actually like to wiggle the brush back and forth as I cut in as opposed to pulling straight across between the ceiling and wall. I find it eliminates paint drips from getting too much up in the corner.

    I just paint around my house, but like everything I do, I research it for hours on youtube before hand. I have to say that you have the best, most practical, and confidence inspiring painting videos! You have helped me out as I am moving from one room to the next doing paint and floors. One thing that kind of makes me chuckle when I watch your videos is your emphasis on accentuating the last syllable in many of your words. Not picking on you by any means, I just picture I am listening to an intelligent Northern version of Forrest Gump lol. Once again, I stress that I am not in any way making fun of you, it is just rare to hear stress on last syllables lol. Keep up the good videos so us amateurs have resources to do the job right!

    Zowiee, over a MILLION views! I know you went to a three inch brush, so I tried that and it works better. A larger brush, which is heavier, and for me is easier to control and not as squirmy. I use a Purdy Clear Cut and usually use Benjamin Moore paints. I also use a head lamp so I can see very clearly into the corner. I just makes it easier for me. I am not a professional, but for some reason I do a lot of painting and show others how to paint. Thanks again Chris.

  • @jimmy2f
    @jimmy2f 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for all the great videos. Although I have been painting for years I enjoy watching others techniques. Never too old or too good to learn something new.
    Holding your breath is a great tip but if I can expand on that a little for the beginners. Exhale first then hold your breath. Your body is more relaxed after an exhale and you will be much more steady. Actually pulling this technique of exhaling from rifle markmenship. the exhale technique has worked for me for years anytime I need a steady hand.
    Obviously you can only remain relaxed for a few seconds but it is more than enough time to pull a laser straight line with a brush for about a foot. Just far enough that you will need to reload your brush. As demonstrated in the video, work the brush up to the cieling and just before you start dragging the line exhale. Don't force all the air out of your lungs just a natural exhale.
    Don't forget to breath again when reloading! 😉

    Another tip is to use a 5 in 1 tool and put a minor crease where the wall meets the ceiling. It will give the bristles a seat to sit into and is helpful when the sheetrock corners aren't the best.

      That's what I do when drip painting. Never thought about doing that for cut ins. Thanks for the great tip.

    Hi Chris, learning a lot from your videos, thanks for all the tips. I have two questions: 1. Would you paint the ceiling first or the wall, especially when the ceiling colour is different from the wall? 2. I have an uneven ceiling, how can I attempt to get an illusion of a straight line? Ive seen other videos where they recommended to use an 8th of an inch of the wall area, chalk it and paint over it with the ceiling colour. To me that would look strange, especially when the wall colour is different. Your advise is greatly appreciated.

    I find if the wall/ceilings are white/white and it's hard to see the edge. I scratch a small line down the joint where they meet and then when I cut in the brush edge follows the line easier and you also have a guide to where your going 😀

      Sanding the groove a little does make the brush slide much better and faster :-)

    That's funny, I hold my breath too when I cut my line...quick, steady and straight across. None of that swiping back n forth crap! (as I tell my helpers) Haven't tried back rolling it though. I will try that out on my next interior job. Thanks, just started watching your videos. "Kris the Painter" from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington
