Yep. It hides flash better than it compensates, but I do notice a slight difference between an A1 and an A2, especially since I clock an A2 at the ~1 o'clock position (from the shooter's perspective, and I shoot RH) which is technically out of spec but Colt can eat my ass because they didn't come up with the AR15: they just got lucky, bought it, and then called it the CAR15 for branding reasons.
How can anyone not look at an A2 as a comp as well as a flash hider? Obviously it's not nearly good as a comp in recoil control but it's definitely helping some.
For me, there's just something about a muzzle brake I love.... call it primal if you wish.... aside from the increased gun control, the looks of the device itself, the flame jets and boom produced gets me giddy like a caveman that just discovered fire! 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
From a military standpoint flash hiders are there because primarily, flash gives away position. The comps/brakes give away position because they are flame throwers. As you mentioned. Suppressor is the way to go. If you're running interdiction, the follow up shot timing isn't so critical; as at range, nobody should know you took a shot for as long as it takes to re-acquire and adjust after a miss
From a military stand point we aren't trying to keep it a secret during a patrol. It's almost like we are trying to make our presence felt or something... my M4s had breaks both in OSUT and at my unit. Unless you're special and have an MOS code I didn't you sound like a POG so shh. I'm sure those operators who work at night time run cans like in the movies seeing as though they need them.

I have brakes that have an external thread that I can screw a linear compensator over. That allows me to be considerate of my neighbors when i'm at a crowded range but can use the brake otherwise.
I wish more people were considerate like that. Recently, I took a new shooter to an indoor 25yrd range to introduce her to guns. Was going good for like a hour showing how things worked and had 22LR conversions on my glocks and AR15, to get her used to gun shots and to get familiar with the controls. There was one other couple doing the same 2 lanes down. Then this group of 4 young guys walk in and setup in the lane next to us with a 16" bolt action chambered in 30-06 with a massive break on the front. They would take turns firing like 1 round a minute. The girl I was with refused to be anywhere near the firing line while they were shooting. I doubt she'll ever want to go back after that experience.

My Diamondback DB15 came with a muzzle brake installed. First time I took it to the range the fireball filled the entire width of my stall( indoor range). Scared the bejeezus out of my dad standing behind me.
I put a precision armament M4-72 severe duty brake on my 20” remington 700 aac-sd and it GREATLY reduced felt recoil. It is comparable to my .223 R700 with no brake. Just don’t stand too close next to or behind me while im shooting 😂
Advertised as a muzzle brake/compensator it is legal in CA on a featureless build. Advertised as a flash hider it makes your ARish rifle an "assault weapon". All in how it is described and marketed. No one ever said you had to be smart to be a politican or one of their advisers....
I’m here in California. Flash hiders are illegal on “featureless” ARs, so we have no choice but use a muzzle brake. I circumvent the percussive boom with an SI Oppressor. It sucks less.
Kaydi is so friggin awesome. I have multiple AR pistols and rifles with both brakes and flash hiders and some with hybrid muzzle devices as well. Really been enjoying the vg precision muzzle devices. Great video as always
VG6 are my go to for muzzle devices. But with E-forms speeding up things, I’m switching over to suppressors. As fast as the ole budget allows due to the $200 bribe money.
I know it goes against all the “cool”, but I put a cheap muzzle break on my AR and I can empty a mag on target with almost no recoil so if the flash or the noise bothers someone well…. Fk em, it makes my shooting easier and faster and that trumps anything else to me.
I have an Anderson SP1 and the thing is SOOOO nice. No recoil, so light, its amazing. I put a 4x retro style scope on it and I carry a Vietnam style bipod, and its amazing.

I've never put one on anything with any power, but I like a linear compensator. If one isn't going to spend the money and wait for the government to get a tax stamp, the linear compensator at least pushes some of the sound downrange and reduces the impact on one's ears.
If you are going to change it up - Flash hider- If you are going to use a can all the time (and why the F would not) use a brake- as will wear the can down faster.
I'm partial to a linear compensator or krinkcov style blast mitigation device on my shortys, a flash hider on a couple of the rifles, silencer on my mediums, a brake on those two, I like the slr linear comp on a few other pistols oh ya I also like the kvp linear comps some of the strike industries muzzle devices, cobra tac, and others I don't know like you said it depends on the firearm, but the muzzle device is one of my favorite parts to pick out of the whole builds

Clint - your advice -- will be running Surefire cans.....so on a DD MK18 (10.3") that will be supressed most of time, would you agree Surefire Brake instead of flash hider? and then on DD M4A1 (14.5") supressed a lot of time but not all, run a 3 prong flash hider?

Why do rifles recoil/muzzle rise up? Bullet exiting barrels don't know up or down. There's never a rifle that muzzle "rises" to the left or naturally runs/sprays right, and no firearms "pull" muzzle to the ground except due to the effects of gravity. So why all up?
I've been running a 3 prong flash hider and it does a great job there's this little tiny fire ball at night... but it's still there and it's still a flash/ fire ball at night time.. felt recoil (lmfao it's a 5.56) is there.. with a break it's none existing. Put on ear pro you're firing weapons I'm sorry it scares you and hurts your ears when a muzzle break is on a gun at the range.
The only muzzle brake worths its weight is a JMAC RRD4C, way better flash mitigation than an A2 and is a far more effective brake than many more well known brakes.
For budget shooting, my long range precision, Rem 700 chassis bolt Magpul Stock and bottom with ACIS MAG .308/756 1:10 and suppressor, looking for a new scope for this one, think for that bolt is better, but then have the AR .223/556 for semi fire, on the hunting side .44mag Ruger carbine, .444 marlin lever w/scope and my .44mag 29 revolver for backup when hunting on my side. For zombies, have two different models semi AR style 12 GA w/10 round mags 00buck. and various of other toys like to plink with. Looking for good scope recommendation for the .308 bolt, Had looked at Vortex, shooting 500-800 yard range not looking for the longer range keeping it practical
Zev Technologies makes a flash compensating brake combo thingy that is absolutely the bomb! Ive never fired a mellower AR than my Zev Core Duty rifle. The muzzle device they make is on every 5.56 rifle i own today because of its effectiveness. Check em out!
My 20" has a titanium (yes, it weighs nothing) brake/compensator. My 16's have VG6 Gamma brakes on them. My Bergara 6.5CM?.. well, that's got an Apollo Max. I make no apologies, only followup shots.
The Warcomp is that much louder? I shot mine yesterday for the first time timed at the neutral position with slight right hand tilt so I guess there wasn’t much gas being thrown against the indoor range stall wall.

It is closed by accident though. They simply realized that the original birdcage would kick up dirt into the shooters face, so they redesigned it.

The only reasons for a muzzle break on an AR 15 is for competition or suppressor mount. Flash hider is objectively superior for a fighting Rifle.
Btw this is coming from a guy who has a muzzle break on his go to rifle (for now). Learn from my mistakes.

Another reason for a muzzle break is if you live in a ban state. Flash hiders are an assault weapon feature. Muzzle brakes are not.

Seems like you'd need to have identical rifles with different muzzle devices to compare.
Short barrels like 10.5” or 11.5” to 16” barrels would really show the difference; you’re correct.
Unless I am building a tack driver I tend to like a standard flash hider on my AR it just makes it more pleasant to shoot

For most people, a suppressor is the best muzzle device. Quieter, low blowback, less muzzle rise.

Suppressors will cause overgas, and in doing so, will typically increase bullet velocity not decrease like all the video games tell us

I myself went with a EFAB, does reduce the recoil perceived, although there’s not much recoil anyway from a 5.56.
I think that’s what I have pinned and welded on my AK, she loud but damn effective. Haven’t shot it at night so can’t say much as far as flash goes

22"- 24" at 26" it's pretty much just a gray/ black puff. But still depends on the burn rate of the powder being used
