    Winter power outages terrify me. Two word solution: kerosene heater. Cheap, effective, and safe. Mine cost $120 and can heat the whole house. Kerosene keeps forever also. Buy a few gallons and have eternal peace of mind.

    • @jasoncovert9051
      @jasoncovert9051 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Kerosene heat is one of the worst heats to burn in your house ever get solar power on your house when it goes out it'll click on there's batteries to back up all that juice

    • @hiddengem9742
      @hiddengem9742 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hell no!! Don’t breath in kerosene because that is worse then carbon dioxide to breathe in. Kids and parents do not do this.

    • @jasonlongton1876
      @jasonlongton1876 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@hiddengem9742 Indoor Kerosene heaters are perfectly safe and burn very clean. I'm not talking some nasty gas station grade fuel. If you were to research the issue, you'd learn indoor kerosene heaters burn synthetic K-1 with negligible CO emissions. It's expensive and sometimes difficult to find, but is safe for indoor use. Should you heat your house 27/7 with it? Probably not as it is so expensive. Is it a potentially life saving expedient? Hell yeah!

    • @outdoorsanimalsandmusic3014
      @outdoorsanimalsandmusic3014 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@hiddengem9742 they sell indoor ones. I’ve worked in warehouses with them and they burn clean. Of course it isn’t the best heating method but we are talking about an emergency here. Totally safe though.

    When I kept several reptiles, power outages in the winter were alway a big fear of mine… It was nice to finally see your collection and it’s is definitely smart to keep the number reasonable especially if you travel a lot (no one ever takes care of your animals as good as you would, imho).

    I don't know your living situation, but if you're on your own land maybe think about looking into a propane generator. I live on the coast of Louisiana and like clockwork every year or every other year we get weeks long power outages when hurricanes roll through. We have a decent sized propane generator with a pretty big propane tank that can run the entire house for over a month. It's such a life-saver. We don't deal with the freezing cold like you, but we do deal with extremely humid heat, over 90% humidity year round, and not having AC or water for weeks would be devastating, and that generator is amazing. We don't even have to worry about keeping the tank full, the company that installed it comes check on it monthly to make sure it's in working condition and tops off the propane and it runs for about 30 minutes every Sunday just to keep everything running smooth. We've had it for about 6 years now, and have had to rely on it probably 5 or 6 times. It was so worth the money. Just a thought, it's great for peace of mind.

    AwwwWWWWW YAY! We are SO happy to see our lavender lass getting so big (and sassy!) and you so happy with her! Thank you so much for showing her off--we LOVE seeing our babies after they've moved into their new homes and seeing the owners so happy with them. You've done so much for us and the reptile community as a whole; learning about your nightmare back in February just devastated us for you. (Your bulls! We know how much you loved them! :( :( ) Brian and I immediately started discussing, "What can we send him?" A nice pair of angry, hissing, opinionated hogs was the least we could do.
    You are a big part of making the reptile world a *community* and not just a bunch of people into scaley critters. Thank you for being a part of bringing us together.
    (Also...ahem...it's Cleo, not Chloe ;) )

    As for your rhino iguana, I worked for an iguana breeder for a year and I have a lewisi hybrid, the reason he is pooping right when you take him out is probably because he is waiting until he is out of his enclosure. They like to keep their little space clean and basically potty train themselves to wait until you take them out. My iguana goes right in the bathtub when I take him out to go the bathroom and then I let him explore and stuff. They are such mazing animals.

I have a plan and what not just in case but if all else fails she will be in a pillow case right on me so i can keep her warm. This was an awesome video. We actually get to visit your collection and you give us the tour. I also think that its very responsible of you to enaure that you only keep what you can instead of having tons of animals that cant be cared for as well as they deserve. I know that probably sounds stupid but I feel some people take on too many animals and then because theres so many that they dont get the care they need and deserve. Thanks so much for your videos and hope you have a great day!

    • @darcieclements4880
      @darcieclements4880 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's not like they made an evaluation. It didn't occur to them that the ground that had previously been a reliable 50 degrees would also plummet when the house temps dropped. It was an honest mistake/accident, very tragic. I've actually seen that happen before, in Michigan a good 20 years ago someone had that happen because they did not realise the consistent cellar temp was related to the building temp. And that was a wildlife education center. They didn't lose everything because it was just 2 days, but they lost a lot. Including a couple of tropicals in the main building. It was just hard because at first they thought that was all that had been lost, but then most of the colubrids and frogs also ended up popsicles.
      If nothing else, this showcases why it is important not to hoard unique genes in one location, in an instant, they can be snuffed out.

    Regarding the iguana dumps. Many animals will poop right away after you take them out of their enclosure because they know it will be cleaned up right away. It is the same as house breaking a dog. I suggest placing in a little box each time and eventually you may be able to have them use the litter box in the enclosure too (though some will only use it outside the enclosure regardless).

    I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of the brumating colubrids :(
    I live in Alaska where we get down to -40F and I also have a contingency plan for my snakes should we ever have an extended power outage, but dealing with that kind of cold is really a terrifying aspect of life in some areas to have to deal with.

    I’m so sorry for your loss! If you have the means I’d definitely recommend installing a stationary generator. You seem pretty handy and the price may be worth it. The cost of x amount of snakes for potentially saving x amount of snakes.
