I honestly like hybrids, I think that they’re really unique animals since each individual shows different expression of the traits of each parent species. As long as people are honest about what they produce and don’t intentionally hybridize other species into already rare animals and muddy the gene pool, I think it’s perfectly fine.

Wow! The Tonga Island Iguana is breathtakingly beautiful. This is the first time I’ve ever seen or heard of them and I was blown away! As far as morphs go, as long as it doesn’t harm the animal, it’s ethically done and it can happen in the wild, I’m fine with it. Other than that, it’s a hard NO for me. Love your videos and I’m still geeking out over the BP movie. I’ve watched it 6 times now. 🐍❤️🐍

For me to be happy with hybridization, a few conditions have to be met:
-neither species is an extremely rare one where the few animals available need to be bred to each other to keep the species/subspecies alive and healthy
-full disclosure to all parties as to what the hybrid is and any potential fertility issues related to that so far as they are known.
-the hybrids are typically healthy (not necessarily fertile, but healthy enough to live normally in captivity)
-interbreeding does not harm either parent

Kinda curious how the WomaXBall hybrid turns out regards to eating. Would the Woma improve the Ball's appetite?
Would they be tougher than BP in general?
As long as the animals are healthy, some hybridization is ok imo.
I mean, look at dogs nowadays. They're all hybrids of some kind.

    • @MaryBieg
      @MaryBieg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Dogs aren’t hybrids, they are all the same species just different breeds. The most common hybrids would probably be a mules or flower horn cichlids.

Dav, PLEASE help us understand why Fiji iguanas aren’t commonly seen in private keepers hands. Some claim it’s because you aren’t allowed to work with them, as you mentioned. But I don’t believe that’s the case. We are allowed to own them, and there are animals in the U.S. It’s just that they’re not allowed to be imported to the US. I cannot think of any federal law that would prevent owning one… please help set the record straight Dav. Thanks!

I like the tricolored hoggies too. As a kid in Michigan, I caught a melanistic hoggie, and s/he was a great pet. My uncle killed a spotted one near his barn. He called it a puff adder. I straightened him out in a hurry, and told him it was a harmless hognose. He felt bad for killing it after I told him the truth. (Jan Griffiths).

Hybrid breeding for the purposes of odd pets is no big deal in my opinion. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch from breeding intraspecies snake morphs that would never exist or likely survive in the wild. I think if you’re supportive of one but not the other, that’s a bit weird. If it’s known that a hybrid commonly have health issues, then no that’s not very ethical. I can appreciate the concern that hybrid breeding is not great for the hobby though.

I’m not too sure of hybridizing by humans. I understand that there is hybridization between the bird species but that is done naturally in the wild. I’ve seen hybridization happen between Canada geese and cackling geese and the hybridization of a Carolina, and a black capped chickadee

I think hybrids are fine if there are plenty of the parent species available so you don't need to be concerned about every breeding contributing to the species. Especially sterile hybrids that won't pollute the gene pool of either parent species. But as someone else pointed out - important that they are healthy and the seller is honest about it.

Do you plan on going to the New England Reptile Expo? Btw I’m neither got or against hybrids, do what you want to do. There are already a ton of natural hybrids in the wild so I don’t see the issue in it and they can be absolutely beautiful. Besides it doesn’t just occur in say snakes it happens with all wildlife, for instance hybrid bluegill/green sunfish, brown bear/polar bear, wolfs/coyotes, hawksbill sea turtle/loggerhead sea turtle.

I’m fine with hybrids as long as the seller is upfront about the lineage and any known health issues. We are domesticating these animals already and they are meant as pets, they will never see the wild again, as long as the animals are healthy and happy its fine. I am also fine with people who want to keep pure wild lines - thats why documentation matters
