    Really fantastic work, loved it!
I've got an SP404 mk2 and a couple of synths, you've given me GAS for the polyend play! Would you recommend as the centre of your dawless setup ?

I have the original Polyend Play... not the Play+. Even though it doesn't have the added synths, it still has eight channels for midi control/sequencing.
However, I mostly just use it for its sampling capabilities. But you probably have most of that covered with the 404.
The interesting thing about the Play is that you can algorithmically do things with samples that I can't really do with other devices. For example, I love chopping up and reorganizing words in odd and playful ways. Well, with the Polyend Play's chance and random I can apply layers and layers of bizarrity. I can randomize the samples, the effects, the starting point, the direction... there are so many possibilities for experimentation.
As for the 'brain', the very affordable Korg Electribe has 16 channels and gets the job done for my rudimentary 'song-mode' needs. Since it can be the 'song-mode' sequencer for up to 16 devices, that is my solo brain... when I am using one machine to control/sequence others.
For more advanced 'brain' duties, my wife has an MPC One. That thing can truly be the 'brain' and even offers input ports/controls for modular setups.
But a lot of the tracks where it's just a single pair of hands using the Korg Drumlogue, Polyend Play, Roland SH-4d (and sometimes Behringer Edge and Volca Sample2) they were just tempo-synced via midi and sync-ports. So, for example, in this track, the SH-4d and Play are synced to the Drumlogue for tempo only.
However, it was the need for greater pattern-chaining that led to me using the Electribe, Play or MPC as a 'brain'. Of these, the MPC is probably the best! But I cannot front... the Electribe isn't bad either... especially not for the $330.00 price-tag on Amazon. No... it can't time-stretch like the 404, but it does have a function where it will break up a beat over 16 steps. As a borderline newb-intended-consumer device, it can do more than I would have thought.
But when I want to program out intricate and aggressive type breaks, the Drumlogue has been my 'go-to'. It has no dedicated song-mode. At most, it can chain 16 patterns. But what it can do with breaks and samples is awesome for its whopping 32mb of storage. If you take a perfect-loop break and put it in the Drumlogue, and use 'motion' to set the starting point for each of the 16 - 64 steps, you can really do some amazing rhythmic/percussion things with the Drumlogue. It does require a little math to divide each amount to 'time-start-motion' over 16 steps (or whatever step-count you prefer), but after you start to figure that out, it becomes the most versatile beat-machine I own!!
Of course you can do the same thing with the Polyend Play... but it counts sample time in milliseconds. So the math gets a little challenging when diving 1279 milliseconds over 16 steps. Challenging, but doable!! And extremely precise!!
Who knew I'd be using basic algebra in making beats?!? My high-school math teacher... that's who!!😅
Sorry for the rant... hope this helps!
Cheers from the land of Delco!!

Thanks! We're trying to figure out what to do with it...
You know... deciding on an actual project name (i am constantly in trouble with my better-half because after she starts on a logo or something, i think of a new name)... then a BandCamp.. SoundCloud.. logistics...
...but for now, we'll keep pluggin on here! We have a few new ideas we're kicking around..
