- Last time I player the Fryette Pitbull, I hated it. This one, The VHT Pitbull Fifty CL, has the graphic EQ. Let's see if there's a difference...

One of the greatest Amps ever. I didn’t watch the first video but it’s a you problem 😂😂😂. I’ve owned two and I love them. But I get not everyone liking it. You don’t suck at all btw.
One of my favorite amps of all time right there... The articulation and clarity of these things is just insane
Don’t dime the gain on these amps. It doesn’t get any more saturated past 2-3 o’clock and you just wind up defeating the bright cap and it gets darker and more compressed past 3. Also these amps benefit from diming the presence knob.
Anyway great video, the 50CL is by far my favorite amp ever.
I'm so glad that you gave this amp a second chance, and you are right. This amp doe's need a boost pedal. The EQ doe's make a big difference with this amp.
You have the VHT sounding really close to Accepts tone. It was killer. The first amp- you had it sounding like KKs Priest tone which was awesome also. Loved both of them👍🏻
The amp kills ! I’ve had mine for over twenty years and will never sell it . Great video Jarrod
This amp shines in the mix . Jarrod you had that Precision Drive dialed in great . Song mix killed
I have a '96 50CL w/ graphic EQ and it records extremely well. I dub it with a Peavey 6505+ crunch channel dimed with a vintage GE in the V1 socket and a gold lion preamp tube in the crunch socket and it's quite a muscular and articulate high gain tone.
That's probably in my top 10 favorite amps. I haven't got mine out in a long time, but I can't seem to sell it either. When buying used amps, you never know what's been done to it unless you try it. I bought a used framus cobra from reverb, based off a friend of mine who owed one. Mne sounded very different. The gain had to be on 10 it was not what I expected. I took in to be looked at, and all kinds of mods were done to it. The bias was way too hot. Preamp tubes were different from what the factor put in and a lot of other things. I got it back to stock, and it's still a pain in the a##, but in its original pain in the a## setting. I have been watching your channel for a while, so I never doubt your playing abilities. You sound and play great to me.
You're playing skills are awesome and top-notch 👊
Thank you!!
Your.
I've had the UL and a 100CL (which I still have). It's generally a lot less dry and unforgiving than the UL. It's still the driest and most unforgiving amp I own. I'm not generally a "boost all my amps" player but the Pittbulls really do benefit from a good boost imo. The KSR Eros really works well with the CL ime. Running the master volume past 2'o clock really opens up the amp fyi.
The Purple Majesty in Drop G Sounded really really good.
Great video, glad to see you tried another one. A boosted deliverance is one of my favourite sounds. Keep up the great videos.
To be honest you are one of the Most respectables tone master i had ever heard. You play killer Bro.
Thank you!! Made my day
Hey brother, been enjoying your videos, thank you for your time and sharing them with everyone.
There are so many factors, in my opinion, that leads into good and bad experiences with amps and speakers. How you attack the guitar, how the guitar is set up, pickups, the variances in tolerance on components in the amp, how much voltage you have available (in my house, my voltage averages between 113 and 126 on any given day at any given time) and even friggin humidity affects how some speaker cones react. And I will add to the point by saying look at the wall of amps in the background. Thats a huge key in this. Tones are like seasonings. Some days you like just a little salt and pepper. Other days you want to go to the top shelf and throw a little bit of everything on it. And saying that, some amps work better on some songs and styles than others. My last recording, on top of my modelers, I probably used between 8 and 10 heads. I had my favorites yes, but sometimes what may have not been my favorite was a better match for the song.
And I can't agree more seeing people say that some of them are VERY unforgiving amps. You got to be on your "A" game or you need to just pass by the VHT some days. LOL. Ive owned a couple over the years, just didn't use them enough to constitute keeping them around, so I sold them to friends so I can borrow them when needed :).
Keep it up! Get your rock on every day!
VHT amps isn't the tone i like! Is it a good amp? Yes! Hey man it really piss's me off how people cut you down has a player. For one i'm not metal player i'm a blues's and rock player but i enjoy hamging out to see what cool stuff bring to the table all the time. Thanks man and rock on! take car brother.
Hey Mark, always great hearing from you. Thank you so much for the kind words.
I love reviewing a variety of gear for people who are interested in different gear. Not all of it's going to work for me but that doesn't mean it won't work for other people. It's always fun to discover new and different amplifiers. Thanks so much for commenting and for hanging out.
your shredding sounded good to me..some unique passages that sounded pretty exotic.Good sound too. I liked it🤘🤨
Thank you!!
Hey man you keep working on those leads there and you might be a pretty decent player someday
I'm an amp sim guy but I like how it sounds, it's also good to blend with a much more saturated amp. Also I found your demo of the synergy version and I still agree with you when you say that it really needs that eq engage to make it sound good
I agree that this model was a better fit for your style.
What I like about these amps is the way that they have so much note separation even when gained out and boosted. Chords sound amazing.
Jarrod! Couldn't of come at a better time for this Tone wars viewer! Have a Fryette Deliverance 4x12 cabinet enroute this week! While I don't have to the VHT Pitbull I do have the synergy Pitbull Ultralead and it took me a few to dial in but worth it and takes a boost like a champ in my experience! Love Synergy and what they and everything Boutique amps have created.
Thanks for commenting and congrats on the new cab. I heard those cabs are amazing. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts
I love my 100CL, but next time try the Green channel also, it has that Marshall rip your face off tone when setup how you did the Red channel.
Great video
Two amps i have heard you play that made me wanna buy them: EVH stealth. Either 50 or 100 watt (which i did buy). And this Fryette pitbull. But i think you should try a newer ultralead made in the 2000s. Also the version with the EQ. This video makes it sound amazing. I dont know man, This sounds better than most of the amps you have played on youtube, at least from what i hear. Anyway. Thanks for making these killer videos. Also. Try a Sig X. I have that amp. Its also really fun to play when you dial it. Orange and red channel.
My Ultralead is still one of my all time favorites. Some people get it, some don't. It's not for the weak handed. It's not forgiving. If you are sucking that day, everyone will know it. And the graphic eq is awesome and essential IMO.
Anyone that says you suck as a player is insane. I don't know how they could even come to that conclusion. Anyway I personally think the VHT sounded awesome. They are a bucket list amp for me. Enjoyed the video👍🏻.
It’s the vibrato. Particularly apparent on the pinch harmonics. He’s a good player though otherwise, very far from “suck”.
Much appreciated!!
I just said the same. Really bad vibrato. People focus too much on speed and not fundamental techniques.@@therileyobrien
I like the amps you demo on your channel, but it always bothers me that you literally dime the gain on every amp before you add the boost. Even when you were demoing the tone features of this amp, having the gain all the way up means your basically allowing every available frequency in, therefore you cannot hear any of the subtle or dramatic changes those controls like edge and shift etc. actually do. Then you jam a boost in front of it and it becomes maximum gain mush, some amps handle it some don’t. It’s just not necc. back up on the gain a bit and let the boost flavor the distortion, you’ll get a tighter more clear tone with the character of the boost your using. Fryette is known for being super clear and articulate and can do both low, mid and high gain really well. You’re playing type is only centered to high gain, prob why at one point you didn’t like it.
Exactly. Not every amp sounds great with the gain maxed out. Try 3 o'clock. There have been many killer albums tracked with these amps with ZERO boost. It doesn't need it.
Agreed 100%. Mushy tone because way too much gain.
Agreed. I boost my CL with a Grid Slammer and my gain is at 5-6. And I play death metal. That said we all have different preferences. Fryettes are certainly not for everyone.
I like the tones provided from both videos, but I think his playing may suit a certain style of amp tone that maybe the Fryette won't give. Less dry amps that sound better suited to thicker, fatter tones. More of the German amps, like some of his amps on their sheves currently. Cool stuff either way.
@@andrewredmon4119exactly, these amps sound best with gain at 3 o’clock at MOST. I always leave my gain knob pointed at the channel indicator light on my 50CL. Past that it doesn’t get more saturated, it only gets darker and more compressed.
Jarod you are super talented! Love this demo. Tried a Pitbull VHT amp and was cool but prefer my Mezzabarba and Mesa amps.
Thank you so much. I appreciate the kind words. I'm with you, I prefer those amps over the VHT as well.
I've had a VHT version PB UL for 10+ years. You're right, it must have a boost (I use 808 variants). The EQ absolutely makes the difference. The last UL you did a demo was a no-EQ version and it sounded lifeless (and, they're not all created equal regardless of the EQ). The dry sound is an acquired taste but it grows on you. And it helps cut through in a mix/live situation. The clean channel is great for running dirt pedals if that your thing.
Would be cool to hear you try the Fryette Deliverance II
Sounded good right off the bat. I had the ultralead 120 with the KT88s and I prefer this one over the one I had. Yours seems to have more snarl to it
By itself I think it sounds thin to me on the leads, but in a mix it sounds so good. I really love the early metalcore vibe it gives me though and that is irreplaceable for me. As always solid tones, solid playing and solid take on an amp.
Guitarists/musicians who cut other playera down for their skills are the worst kinds of people and usually can't play themselves and have to cut others down as a way to make themselves feel better. Music isn't a contest, it's an art and we should all just have fun and lift other musicians up not cut em down. I will say that 98% of other guitarists/musicans I've jammed with are all about having a good time and pushing each others to be their best, and if they wanna be little b*tches they won't say it to your face because they are cowards and thats how petty cowards roll. People have gotten wayyy to comfortable talking sh*t behind their keyboards. Anyway, love the videos man and keep it up brother.
I enjoy the comments from the jerks, one thing i dont see is a comparable video from them, ever. Its wild how different metal can be from player to player but all the techniques cross all genres.
The problem is you played 2 different kinds of VHTs. The CL has EL34s. The Ultra Lead has KT88s. I wasn’t a fan of the Ultra Lead when I owned it. I have yet to try the CL, but would love the chance one day. Good vid.
That won’t make as big of a difference as you think it might. The old power amp was specifically designed for KT88, just as this is specifically designed for EL34. That means the screen and grid voltages, feedback loop, phase inverter, bias etc are all purposefully chosen to work within the tube spec and be as neutral as possible. Oftentimes people try swapping tubes, and adjust the bias, but everything else is out of range and that contributes to the difference in sound way more than the tube itself
@@ItsMetabtw Actually, it does. Having previously owned an Ultra Lead, I can tell there’s a big difference with sounds just from the video. Granted, getting a CL in my hands is another thing, but even Fryette stated he was working to achieve different sonic results with the Ultra Lead compared to the rest of the VHT line at the time in the 90s.
@@thomasedward1525yeah I own a 50CL and it definitely sounds a bit different from an Ultralead (which I hope to be able to own one at some point)
Sounds pretty bad ass to me
As for the playing, it is quite good and i see no issue there but there seems to be some technical problems involved that might have an impact on how people, myself included perceive your videos. So, on every video i watched so far there is a dignificant desync between the guitars and drums, it does simply not sound right. Maybe you want to check that out and see if there is anything you can do to make the audio sync up better! :)
That amp hat the Dr. Feelgood Sound.
@TONEWARSgearshow I haven’t seen any content for Synergy Modules in a while. Did you move away from them? Would’ve like to see the comparison on this amp against Synergy’s. Thanks for all the content too!
I like this channel, because you were not impressed by some Bogners and VHT and I, some of my friends, have exactly the same experience. This kind of tells me I am not watching yet another "I am reviewing hyped amp, at the same time as other reviewers, what a coincidence, it is great" (also known as advertisement)
I suggest to look up people settings over internet, even on the pictures. I think most of people use milder V graphic EQ (scooped, smile) with some boost for the first/last sliders and then adjust normal EQ. Quite often I have seen "sloped" EQ so for example: lower treble, mids at mid, higher bass, or higher treble, mid at mid, lower bass. Usually mids stay on mid. Edge button is nice if one wants to add Marshall bite and slight compression. Shift can be useful with some guitars as well.
Without EQ this amps sounds to me like neutered, neutral, boring, darker, more defined Marshall DSL. For me basically this amp is useless without EQ unless you like low gain tones. I actually liked CL better than UL on low volumes, as CL has a nice saturation, while UL sounds a little bit thinner, though on high volume it has tighter and clearer bass.
And the tigthness, it is tight but imho people are exaggerating, there are plenty of tight amps these days. It is more dry and dark though.
Also it is not so very unforgiving as people say, set other amps to the same (lower) amount of gain and flat eq and they will behave in similar way. Same thing with clarity/note separation, it is very good, but not extraordinary if you have that amount of gain.
By the way, I suggest checking VHT SIG-X, it is pretty interesting. To me it sounds like a mixture of VHT and Bogner Ecstasy. It has definitely more character or texture to it. Very noisy clean channel (it sounds broken, as even with no volume/gain it is noisy, that is due to the "design").
When it comes to Bogner, Ecstasy is tighter, less bloated and weird than Twin Jet or Uberschall (which I dont like that much), but not very metal for standard tunings. The closest amp I've heard to Ecstasy is actually Fender 5150 III 100W normal version, Bogner is more marshall like, extremely nice for rock, hard rock, tight, sizzly, mids are just right, instant recording tone, it just does not have low end/bass like 5150 III and overall character is suited for rock. IMHO it sounds very good with 7 string guitars.
Sounded sick!
Try the SigX, or the new Deliverance pls. Fryettes are best with Fane spekers, or EV.
All of this takes a lot of work. The sounds I thought were awesome but as touchy as that EQ is it seems you could get in some crazy territory.
Thanks for commenting. You are correct, those faders on the EQ are very powerful and they can get you into some really crazy territory like you said.
Awesome Video 🤜🤛I Like it
Sounds excellent 👌
I had a non GEQ one for a while and just couldn’t get along with it no matter how I set it. I would definitely like to try a GEQ model and a Deliverance someday
I’ve owned both a GEQ and a non GEQ 50CL. The GEQ is nice but not necessary at all. Dime the presence to give it some more grind and snarl and don’t be afraid to run the EQ knobs in places your eyes say is wrong. I’ve got mine with the treble knob at 3oclock mids at 11 o’clock, and bass at 11 as well. Presence dimed, depth at 10 o’clock, all buttons pushed (boost, edge, shift, voicing) and it sounds absolutely monstrous. Also channel volume at 9 o’clock, master up 2’ o’clock.
Dry amps are great for practice. They highlight the mistakes.
When it all comes down to it, it’s all a matter of personal preference and taste. In my case, I have a Revv Generator 120 MKIII and I think it’s the greatest amp ever while so many other players (including a few of my friends) think it’s pretty much “meh”. It’s just not for them but it certainly works for me. Getting back to the Pittbull, the closest I got to one was the Synergy module that I tried at the Sweetwater store and that was definitely a 👎🏻 from me.
Dry high headroom amps have a specific sound, its not about playing skills but playing style. From what Ive seen you are more in the progressive slightly shreddy playing which is not what I'd associate at all with VHT sound. I think of VHT as more dry percussive rythmn playing. The same goes with HiWatt amps, they work for certain players but dont for other clean players that need more compression and bloom for their style, not because they cant play but it doesn't suit how they play.
Dude..That's the best head I've heard you play through.
Great job Jarrod, most people don’t change their diapers and tampons in time before they get pissy. Same people kicks dogs.
The delay on the rhythm tracks doesn't help with the tonal precision (in addition to too much gain).
It's definitely not the player. You know what you're doing clearly. I think some people are missing the obvious. The wall of high gain amps behind you you have as reference that most don't. It's an informed opinion.
Thank you!!!!!!!
The Offspring used this amp in the early days.,
Steve Fryette is a mad scientist genius!!!
I love his stuff. I own a VHT branded Ultra Lead w/EQ and it is my desert island amp. I’ll be buried with this thing.
But on a second note, I do NOT like you!
I’ve been playing guitar 30+ years and I know that I’ll never be half as good a player as you are. So therefore that makes you my enemy and I don’t like you. 😂😂😂😂🤘🤘🤘🤘
Bahahaha hilarious 😂. Thanks for the kind words
I love my VHT Fat Bottom Cab 🙂
Great playing and soling. I would have liked a key and pace change, but that's me.
Anyone who questions your skills is a schmuck.
Not a fan of VHT gear. For me it's ENGL, Marshall and Boogie.
not bad with a boost
To me its definitely a rhythm guitar amplifier and not very bright for pushing the leads through. Not sure if thats what you are considering dry? TH-cam sucks for real sound anyway. But it also has something I don't like about it. Its like some kind of half cocked open wha sound maybe? Now your purple guitar the leads came through alright in the mix. But then again, maybe it TH-cam? But it doesn't sound like a horrible amplifier. But certainly not the worst Ive heard. I once sadly owned the Crate - Blue Doo Doo~!
Another great demo, Jarrod. At this point, I think you could dial in a Peavey Bandit and make it sound like a death dealing, high gain monster. Any ETA on the latest Marshall ToneX captures?
Thank you!! Also, thanks for asking about the tonex captures. They are all done, I just have to upload them to the website and create the box art. That will all be done very soon. Hopefully Monday
@@TONEWARSgearshow Can't wait. As always, thanks so much for taking the time to make the captures -- and for doing them so well. Looking forward to tonight's stream.
I don't understand why you want to have so many amplifiers and that obsession with the sound of amplifiers. For me that is secondary, my main concern is how good the songs I am writing are and how well I can perform them live and record them.
The amp collection is simply for my TH-cam channel. I do this for a living. I also write lots of songs, like the ones you heard in the video. Those were written by me.
People enjoy their hobbies in many ways and for many different reasons. Don’t waste your time trying to understand.
@@TONEWARSgearshow I would go crazy if I only had half of what you have, I wouldn't know which one to use.
It’s because he/we Can!
@@Mike_HuntizWet Sadly i am shure that it si not the real reason. It is rather to overcompensate for deficiencies that money cannot solve. I know perfectly well which amp I like the most. Why would I sacrifice the sound of any of my songs by using another amplifier that is not my favorite?
everything sounds like a line 6 spyder on insane mode compared to the MONOMYTH !!!
@@jstnR I have his next iteration coming very soon. Wait until you hear that one
5:50 - 5:58🤣
If you don’t like everything that I like there must be something wrong with you😂😂😂
You people and your boost pedals. A tube amp is best enjoyed with just one cable between guitar and amp. Fuck all those 70s transistor circuits in between. It’s good to be a purist
VHT/Fryette are some of the world’s best amps. Steve is one of those amp geniuses. Usually if you dont like the tone, then that means you suck as a guitarist because you need compression and saturation to cover your crappy playing. And we’ve all seen your crap playing. Makes sense why you dont like them
😂😂😂😂 are U for real that is the funniest thing I have ever heard 🎉🎉🎉
It's not the amp.
That's why I carry a boost on me at all times, Karen!
How old are u?
Your playing is VERY VERY VERY good my complaint is different, and i think some ppl just don't know how to voice what thry mean- I find your rhythm guitar parts to be very generic, typical, predictable, and boring. That said, you may or may not be showing your true stuff, I don't know if this is as creative as you get, so I can't really judge, as your videos are about the sound and you may not necessarily be showing off your more special stuff, for us to steal ;). So I don't love WHAT you compose/play, but it's very unlikely that it's a full representation of your songwriting and riff writing. Thanks for the reviews, awesome tones. And thanks for fucking being normal and direct. Enough with the wusses that take offense to how u talk. That's just fuckin childish and they must have not been bullied enough.
All I can say is, when I'm playing a very uninspiring amplifier, I'm just not inspired to play anything that I normally play. I dumb it down because I'm not inspired. If you watch some of my other videos, you'll see what my capabilities are. I play many riffs and many different time signatures and I do lots of solos. Check it out. Again, if I'm playing an amplifier that doesn't Inspire me, I'm just going to phone it in
