I'm reminded of a day in 97 when I watched dag crawl from the saloon to his cross country skis.
He couldn't stand up he was so wasted and couldn't put on his skis. A young couple came over and helped him balance long enough to clip in and boom! Off like a shot, gliding away lol.
I laughed so hard I nearly choked on my burger. The guy was always a riot to watch.

If you really want to see a documentary about the “ most elusive man in North America” watch Alone in the Wilderness about Dick Proenneke. He returned from Vietnam, and was kinda over everyone, and lived alone in a cabin in Alaska up into his 80s. He had one friend who brought supplies via bush plane every 3 months. The documentary doesn’t go into great detail about his philosophical discoveries, but follows his journal about how he was able to do what he did.

I could care less how much he has contributed to society as far as I'm concerned he has contributed enough just by being a decent human being which he obviously is. What I'm wondering is how self sufficient he is..because if someone is bringing him groceries in a vehicle once or twice a month then obviously he's not very self sufficient.

I've been wondering around in the woods for 30 years and I don't consider myself self sufficient at all. I'm just an introvert. People have lost the plot on what it means to be self sufficient in these comments. As far as I'm concerned this is just some old crazy introvert dude wondering around in the woods. If whoever is feeding him stopped feeding him he would probably come out of the woods to ask for help or just die from starvation. But to me he doesn't look self sufficient at all..not from what I saw in this video. I'm guessing the old dude has a kid or family member bringing him supplies every month.

It has been said by others but I will say it also:
    Great subject, abysmal documenting.
8 minutes into a 14 minute documentary is when the subject is finally revealed?!
The majority of the documentary was not of the subject but rather the filmmakers' adventures talking to locals... which is pretty piss-poor if it took them a few weeks in Vernon to finally contact a local reporter who has written articles on the subject.
The whole documentary seems like the directors just said, "Lets see if we can lazily find someone, record our vacation and then go home as soon as we find them," and of course not bother to actually get much documented except for maybe 3 quotes of substance and nothing more.
This should have been much more substantial as Dag is getting quite old. Rather than focus on on the 'why he is up there' they should have focused at least on the 'how'. It may be selfish of others to ask him to share more of his life, but in a world where kids are glued to tablets, he is a source of inspiration.

Also, can you please enlarge the things that you had written and placed at the center of the video? It was very tiny and hard to read. Two portages later I'm on Whitefish Lake, alone for two weeks. I fish, I cook, I tend the campfire. I make a sail using two paddles and my rain pullover to sail across the lake. I read books. I play my harmonica. The solitude restores my soul and I'm very contented.

Sorry to hear you never made it to that cabin in the woods. I just turned 52 and I’m in the process of building a cabin to try and live one year off grid with my dog. I don’t want regrets and now a days life goes by quickly.

Was this just the intro? As soon as the story started it was over. Sure didn't learn much about him at all.

Amen. You took the words right out of my mouth! Those sappy commercials, with the blind dude and the pregnant woman, make we want to puke, laugh, and roll my eyes simultaneously. Much like the horrendous narration in this video.

    he is a wise person,
he clearly developed himself over his life, not just in the woods.
Love to understand more about him.
it was a long way to go for such short interview with the man
There must be a bunch of other footage elsewhere ?
Would love to have seen the bus and his day and stuff.
