I'm down a rabbit hole. This is the most detailed and interesting Nostalgia Critic deep-dive I've seen so far, and perhaps the best quality criticism of his overall canon I've seen. Keep it up ^-^
The shots at the start of the younger nostalgia critic becoming the current one shows how devious Doug Walker looks with age. There's something about modern Nostalgia Critic that just looks unsettling compared to old stuff.
The whites of the eye are more visible above the iris in his newer videos, which is a sign of insanity. In the older videos he spent more time with a neutral, sane expression.
This is absurdly mean, but he might be one of the least attractive people I've ever seen. He's just so distinctly off-putting and his personality only adds to it. He's just icky lol
I dunno if I'd say he's the most hideous guy in the world,he does look like picture of a redditor tho, with what you'd imagine their humour and voice would be like. His hypocrisy dies make him uglier physically somehow tho
I ha ve some binge lists of him.. a fall topic "He remembers it so you don't have to" one, based. of course, on his first person opening tag and close line..(I've been on YT since the beginning, probaly evne loneger, and have maintined my own rather popular channel), One dedicated to his five reviews of MARY POPPINS RETURNS, his DISNEYCEMBER series, etc.
especially considering there's other channels that can also go into detail on that area. for instance, theScore Esports does delve toward the FGC now and again... even if the bulk of the focus is on either FPSes and Mobas...
This is one of the most satisfying videos about nostalgia critic I've ever seen on TH-cam. I can tell this was made by a former fan because you aren't just hating you actually wish it could be better and see the simple ways that couldve happen over the years. Great work 👍
I jumped to this video from one titled something like "the show must go on: Doug Walker's uncomfortable masterpiece" which explains a lot of your criticisms here. Plus bits of his old content that I remember because I'm a fan of his older stuff, too. Every small change in his early career was met with backlash. He addressed the controversy of his wall being painted a slightly different shade. Then, he tries to make a big change. He tries to put the Critic to bed and move on to something more real. Except he can't. His audience and their fear of change push back, and Demo Reel dies on the table. Rather than fire the people who were hired for this change, he kept them and integrated them into the Nostalgia Critic. A character Doug himself views as toxic, cruel, simplistic (according to The Show Must Go On). There was a quiet threat to the audience. They had to accept the bit of change here. It was part of the deal to get their simplistic comfort character back. Doug avoids change and complicated viewpoints because, when he challenges his audience, he's shut down. At the same time he desperately wants to be creative and serious. When I show more modern reviews to my wife, she'll say "he's wrong. It's more complicated than that" and I'll say "I know, I agree, but I enjoyed it anyway." And a nitpick for you. Dead Meat started as a summary show, yes, but now he integrates in a ton of behind the scenes knowledge, giving us an insight into creature design and the like, to the point that he's redoing old episodes to include that background knowledge. Found Flix would be better, as he posits being an "ending explained" show but he sticks to that format, sometimes avoiding overall themes and ideas entirely despite the name.
This was incredible to watch, your observations and analyses were well thought out and you never fell into the trap of just attacking the subject. I stopped watching NC almost four years ago now, and I've always struggled to articulate what turned me off him, but you hit so many of the factors I didn't even realise I was feeling. Bravo 😊😊😊
14:30 The fuck are you talking about? No, NC Editorials are among his best work and contradict many people who claim all he does is summarize movies. They're legit analyses of film topics.
There was a fleeting moment when he tried to do something different. The video where he watched old ads. It was very successful and to be honest - pretty refreshing to see. I loved the idea and had a lot of fun watching the series, but then the success was noticed and it was run into the ground. But I think it was a missed opportunity to slowly change the content a take the channel into a different direction.
discovered your channel binged everything in it then i go "i wonder when they'll do another video" and i check and the 4ch one was made 2 years ago... please come back we need more content like this
You forgot, that Doug did want to change after "Scooby-Doo". Problem is, his idea of change was "Demo Reel". And we all know how it turned-out... Including him. But instead of rising up to the challenge and change his format completely, Doug went the other way - he gave-up and stuck in his familiar format. And "The Review Must Go On" kinda cements it.
NC went down the moment he started taking himself seriously NC is a comedian and a performer. He is NOT an actor, not a singer and not a director/producer I’ve never known a better example of someone discovering their own strengths, and then trying their best to ignore them
Man this video is awesome. It’s sick dude. It’s like super interesting but it all connects together so well. I dunno even what to really say but this video is incredible about such a weirdly dumb but funnily enough an exactly nostalgic thing that fits really strangely it’s at least MY reality. Damn dude, good job.
I haven't even watched the entire analysis yet, because I wanna express just how perfect it is. These reasons are exactly why I gave up with Nostalgia Critic, and before I couldn't figure out those reasons. Subbed.
I thought they had the studio because of Demo Reel and just kept renting it out after that failed. That aside I got bored of NC a couple of years before the document stuff. I completely unsubscribed round about the time of the document stuff. I’m Doug’s age so I enjoyed the reviews and poking fun at the junk I grew up with…but yeah it did get old with the over abundance of skits. I do find the older reviews are still a bit funny to me, like his Commando review.
I feel obligated to point out that the eagles in lord of the rings are not a plot hole in the books it’s explained why they can’t just take ‘em to Mordor they just cut all that out of the movies
To be honest, I think part of the reason ripping into Nostalgia critic became the cool thing to do is because of the channel awesome doc. There was a point in time where Doug was unironically respected as a critic by many people. It makes me wonder I that respect would still be there had that doc not come out
probably not, Doug is just so sad of a man. The man who used to be energetic in his zany character now just became the character, and it's rather pathetic - and used to love his content since 2011 but once time moves on, I evolved and changed while Doug does the same thing but worse. Back in 2008, I was in middle school, now in 2022 I am in my mid 20s about to get a house. Doug, practically never changed in those years. I really can't tell if I should respect him for enduring that long or be sorry for him given his failures and derision for that time. The Doc didn't really target him, but his silence on it has certainly made me think lowly of him.
I for one think your right. And frankly I'm honestly getting sick of this Doug-piling. Doug has fucked up yes, his talent is limited, of course. He may indeed be a shittybperson IRL...I dunno. But give him his credit. Give the man's inarguable success it's proper due. Stop talking as though there is nothing positive to say about him, present or past. Yes the document made you all feel mad mad. But this desperate attempt to utterly destroy Channel Awesome' is whiney bullshit.
I think the smaller episodes that don't focus on a piece of media are really great. In the same way that a lot of the regular videos act as an introduction to film criticism, I think those smaller videos are a great way to introduce the viewers to another type of film criticism and analysis.
Amazing video essay! I think the biggest problem with Doug Walker is his unwillingness to change or evolve. While sets have become bigger, skits have become longer, the general production-value, and the writing feel exactly the same as they were back in the late 2000s. There's no change, no evolution which I thought was most visible in his show Demo Reel. As a creative myself (a writer) I try to constantly challenge myself, write in different styles, about different themes and topics, but also studied grammar, punctuation, composition etc. to know just what the hell I am doing. Doug Walker, however, seems to be stuck, both creatively as well as in terms of production. This can be attributed to laziness or indifference, but I'm honestly convinced it is arrogance. Doug Walker thinks, that him becoming popular shows that he's a great filmmaker. If you listen to behind the scenes comments from the Channel Awesome anniversary movies and his expectations for Demo Reel, you know, the dude thinks what he does is great. It's baffling that someone who makes a living criticizing (and nitpicking) movies is so insanely bad at it. But I guess, it's always easy to understand why something DOESN'T work, than to know why it works. In a way Doug Walker's story is kinda sad. He's a man who desperately wants to be a filmmaker, yet is unable to become one. On the other hand, it's his ego that keeps him from improving, from evolving.
That's because the Nostalgia Critic doesn't make reviews. He makes Anti-Reviews. It's like how Seanbaby made satirical anti-reviews of the worst games on his website & for Electronic Gaming Monthly. AVGN and Cinema Sins are all under the Anti-Review umbrella. The videos are made more for the comedy than for any real critique or film analysis; it's not an earnest attempt at reviewing anything. Video Essays are their own category.
In my first few years exploring YT media reviews, I was slow to work out that I was watching a plot recital rather than a critique. That I had added to a view count was all that mattered.
I had stopped checking out the Critic every week roughly about 3 years ago or so. Never could explain as to why, but I feel that now I have a pretty good explanation. There is definitely fun and charm in his earlier videos, but as time went on that slowly faded away. I suppose that's why I subconsciously decided to stop watching.
Love the video although I would love to see you go back to discussing FGC personalities. My 1st choice would be FChamp since I find that his story has many more shades of grey to it than those of the other controversial figures you've previously spotlighted.
19:21- 19:31 So it's not just me. Though I got that impression based on the knowledge that Doug wanted to transition to writing full-fledge comedy skits and film. Problem is you've gotta learn how to write longer skits and comedy films. Based on what I saw from Demo-Reel, that's something Doug didn't learn how to do.
Also, you gotta learn basic filmmaking skills and up your production value if you, you know, wanna get into making films. To this day, he hasn’t learned basic filmmaking techniques such as white balancing, color grading, the 180 rule, audio leveling, etc. How people still give him a free pass despite all this is beyond me.
This may seem like a minor detail, but at 23:21, what movie is that brief clip from? It looks very, very familiar, as do the actors, and I wonder if it’s something from the mid-to-late-‘90 I’ve seen, but only half-remember through some kind of haze. It’s like I can almost see it!! Gah. This is going to drive me crazy. Excellent upload, by the way. I too find it hard to fathom anyone could mistake what Doug does with actual film critique. But if were all a kid were exposed to … yikes, though: what a narrow worldview to be conditioned into. 😮
I think when he tried to combat being copyright struck by re-enacting scenes from the movie, and he still got copyright struck was funny. That's probably the funniest thing that's been associated with him in over 8 years. How sad is that? You should do a video on the SpoonyOne as well. I know Down the Rabbit Hole already did, but I think you could do well on that subject.
i'm glad i rejected doug's style of reviewing in favor of something like a cross between emer prevost & redlettermedia, it's made my reviews a lot more thoughtful and honest instead of pointless skits or completely missing the point the film was trying to convey
Really fantastic video. I would have appreciated a warning about the Jontron blood bag skit though, not to try and sound like a whiny jerk, I'm just extremely queasy when it comes to blood and IVs and a lot of that kind of stuff and that skit really causes issues for me. Anyway cant wait for your next upload whenever you decide to do it. I'm sure it'll be fantastic as well.
At this point I think the nostalgia critics gonna do this forever because his fans just love his content and there’s no point of watching his content anymore it’s gotten boring and is not funny
Fans who are either too naïve or too selfish to realize the horrible things he's done. While it's not as bad as major criminals that have done murder and rape, it's almost the same level due to his delusional mindset.
And this is why I don't like to watch that many reviewers in general, since a lot of them still stick to this unnecessary anrgy critique style that I'm shocked still hasn't died out. And the fact that so many people are still replicating this style just annoys me to no end. (See Bobsheaux as a perfect example of this, since he just blatantly rides the NC style train still to this day... 😓)
Doug Walker is the definition of someone who never grew up. Looking back on his nearly 15-year career as a TH-camr, the guy doesn't have anything to show that he understands filmmaking or reviewing. He comes off as someone who had big dreams of making his own films one day, only to be met with disappointment when the ones he did make were not good and has been bitter about that ever since. He doesn't learn from his mistakes to improve, which shows that there is a huge ego and arrogance about him. And this is coming from a former fan of his videos. I used to love his content when I was younger (2008 - 2014-ish), but the older I got, the more I began to see the flaws of the character and the man behind it. It's no longer fun or funny, it's just sad to see.
I think it's perfectly fine to nitpick things that create issues in the movie that bother you (like the eagles in Lord of the Rings for me), but I think it's silly to let a movie be ruined *entirely* by nitpicks.
@@jeremyusreevu237 It's rather hard to ignore the stagnant takes and repetitive comedy of his. I used to be amused by it when I was 14, now at 26, it's just so lame and sad
honestly kinda miss the whole screaming thing cause the amount of people went the complete opposite direction. "I'm smart and cool cause i'm a monotone cynic" is almost worst, like the wave of reviewing Your Movie Sucks and I Hate Everthing brought in lead to a whole batch of dull creators. even if it's for the wrong reasons, i enjoyed seeing a sea of wacky content creators back in that era of online media cause it felt more individualistic (even when they were being a copy cat of another channel). from essay to commentary channels, 90% of creators the past decade feel so interchangeably bland - you're only going to watch them cause they chose an interesting topic not because they themselves are interesting people and can make any topic captivating. I like some of the Fredrik Knudsen videos but if the topic doesn't hit my pre-establisehd interests, i give it a hard pass. Internet Historian on the other hand can cover a man getting stuck in a cave for a feature film's run-time and I'll watch it all with full attention; he's the rare 10% of content creators. TLDR. AVGN had the best balance of mellow enough while going full blown Looney Tunes.
The fact he never used the white wall to white balance his camera shows he didn't even learn the very, very, very basics.
"Why would Doug Walker need learning"?
"His already good like his ever become"!

Luckily, strangers getting hit in the nuts will never change or cease to be funny.
26:53 I miss that guys channel. He was pretty funny.
what's the quote at the very end?
The hero has returned!
Return of the King.
Dougs teeth are coded to the wall behind him
I wish you'd stick to FGC, but fine by me
Oh dear God cinemasins does not trace the plot hahaha
this is a good video
I think it's perfectly fine to nitpick things that create issues in the movie that bother you (like the eagles in Lord of the Rings for me), but I think it's silly to let a movie be ruined *entirely* by nitpicks.
Unbelievable!
Say what you will, but Doug got me inspired to create my own works.
But keep in mind, I stayed with Linkara after I got irritated and bored with Doug.
I agree.
Good job 👍
I dunno I prefer the editorials and out of character videos.
there’s a large market for homogenized gruel
But you can have comedy as criticism
Oh boy
Mna...how forgot how much the ending of this videos was condescending and pandering
As bad as Doug Is, I did enjoy the commercial episodes
1:32
1:33
1:34
this is kinda amazing! NC is really amazing even now
TL;DW: Nostalgia Critic is not nostalgic. Things become nostalgic when they change. He has not.
That's not really the point of the video but yeah go off
@@DoujinDude The comment was a joke with some truth to it.
So... That wasn't really the point of the comment so yeah, go off.
good shit
may star go out before the NC does
i like it
I think NC is still good. Between commercial reviews and the comedy, i am always looking forward to what movie he reviews next.
Agreed. NC isn't the best reviewer, but he gets way too much hate.
Tortoise FTW!!!
I only like the skits in the commercial specials, any other videos they're just annoying.
Big boi
