  • Do you ever look at someone and wonder... "What's going on inside their head?" Because I'd sure like to know what was going through Doug's mind when he made this review. Time to utilize Thrax's modus operandi and turn up the heat in here to give Doug's Osmosis Jones review a thorough charbroiling.
    I do apologize for any wonky editing toward the end, when several assets are added or sequenced in Vegas my computer chugs to a crawl and the lag prevents me from seeing how well the editing plays out.

    TH-cam, this is a video that falls under fair use in line with the criteria laid out for commentary/criticism and any material in here is not a substitute for the content being discussed.
    This video is also suited for ages 13 AND UP as it talks about material that may be aimed at children but in a manner that older and more cognoscente audiences may find useful/informative. That said, leave this video alone.

    Yeah... even when I was a fan of _Nostalgia Critic_ and thought he got *most* things right about cinema, I thought the _Osmosis Jones/Inside Out_ comparison was kinda stretching it, as there's been plenty of other media that centred on personifying the mind more specifically. Prolly the most famous example prior to _Inside Out_ was the show _Herman's Head,_ and there's also been a few one-off gags in episodes of TV shows, such as the _SpongeBob_ episode "Squilliam Returns", for example. Not to mention, there was a show called _Inside Eddie Johnson_ that focused on personifying the body, which I guess puts it more in the _Osmosis Jones_ category as opposed to _Inside Out,_ though I can't really fault Doug for not having heard of that show, as it aired on Nickelodeon in the 2000s, and isn't particularly circulated online either.
    But yeah - what do you expect from the same guy who compared _Mad Max_ to the Roadrunner cartoons, and thought _The Wall_ was just random visuals for the sake of random visuals?

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      It's such a weird bit. Because on one hand, I get it, right? They want a framing device for the review. So sure, the others have to do something for a sketch and there's not a lot of popular media taking place inside someone's body outside of just this. But it's also like..... there had to be other ways to do this, right....?
      Like, off the top of my head, maybe make the framing like Doug's going to the doctor for a check-up and the other people can play the doctors and nurses and stuff as they try to diagnose Doug getting sick as he just keeps ranting about Osmosis Jones to them. I don't know if it'd be funny, but it'd make way more sense than this and they could probably work some clever jokes in there, right?

    The trope of personifying parts of the psyche and the realm (mind/brain) they live in, aside from the memory library (but not dream motion pictures, as film had not been invented yet); It all goes all the way back to Book 2 of The Faerie Queene, a Shakespeare-era fantasy epic. The part with the Castle of Alma. Look It up. So yes, Inside Out and Osmosis Jones share a centuries-old common ancestor.

Imagine you make something and it gets a lot of praise only for someone to plagiarize it and it becomes a great success earning the person who ripped off your work rich and famous but it doesn’t matter because you weren’t popular or the culture you were a part of was opposed to your beliefs. I remember this movie, but I haven't seen it as a kid, even though I've heard it's underrated. I'm not an expert on the human body, but the worldbuilding inside a human is very interesting, I love the police plot-line storytelling giving some character development, and I love the voice acting, even the villain is awesome as he seems to be written like a biological weapon instead of an actual virus. When Doug compares this movie to Inside Out only because it involves living inside a human, that's like comparing Star Wars to Alien only because of the special effects and outer space setting.

    • @ARCtheCartoonMaster
      @ARCtheCartoonMaster ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Or it's like comparing _HMS Pinafore_ to _Treasure Planet_ because they both take place on some kind of ship.
      I know that might sound rich coming from the man who often compares _Pinafore_ to _Titanic,_ but at least then it's not just the ship that makes them similar, but also the basic plot structure of a guy and a girl falling in love with each other but being unable to marry due to misaligned social class rank, and the girl being betrothed to some snobbish old fart who's just in it for the money... and even with those similarities, I feel the need to caveat the comparison by calling it a "Disneyfied" version of _Titanic_ (and caveating *that* caveat by adding "even though it predates both Uncle Walt and the actual _Titanic"),_ as - SPOILERS - everyone lives at the end of _Pinafore._ That, and it's a musical/opera.

    Doug's biggest issue in defending himself from critique is that he claims the Critic is a character yet the views are his own. It's like he thinks people are just upset over his delivery rather than people taking him to task over his failure to do even simple research, overreaching for terrible jokes, atrocious levels of "special effects," and the laundry list of other problems that have nothing to do with his over-the-top delivery.

    • @MagmaPaint
      @MagmaPaint  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Even more rich is that at some point in the past, the whole "character" excuse could be bought to some extent but once the Real Thoughts and First Viewing videos started becoming regular they really killed that notion because Doug in character as the Nostalgia Critic and Doug out of character are barely distinguishable. Not to mention that little bonuses like calling Sailor Moon "Jailbait the Show" at a convention as himself while his Nostalgia Critic review of the anime repeatedly accused it of being spank bank material just keep giving him more rope to hang himself. I'm half expecting him to winge and whine about how he's facing a similar dilemma as the actor who portrayed Geoffrey in Game of Thrones who retired from acting altogether because people couldn't distinguish him from the character but that's not the case here. Geoffrey was an absolute piece of sh1t that was completely irredeemable and while his actor was very effective at portraying him, he's nothing like the character in real life and would probably punch the character in the face given the chance. Doug as the Nostalgia Critic is closer to Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker where he slowly molded into the role to the point of becoming just as insane or Weird Al Yankovic as Cheese Sandwich where the actor is playing a character written and designed with the actor's characteristics in mind and now I feel really gross comparing this hack to better characters and actors (plus musician in Weird Al's case) where the two run together.

      You're right, Mag. Deadpool debuted in 1991 while Freakazoid debuted in 1995. Rick and Morty wasn't around until 2013.
      That is a major problem with Doug. The only kinds of humor he knows are gross-out jokes, immature jokes, surface-level pop culture references, and jokes where the entire punchline is cruelty (I know he said misery, but it still counts).
      Several of his post-revival episodes make it clear to me that Doug never wanted to bring Nostalgia Critic back in 2013 but had to because of the massive failure of his and his brother Rob's dream project Demo Reel. The clipless episodes (including The Wall) especially shows his resentment towards Demo Reel crashing and burning in 2012 by injecting that show's drab, life-less style into NC.
      Honestly, the Not So Awesome document and his "review" of The Wall were the breaking points for me with the show.

Are you trying to be the new Jared Fogle?? Ok, I doubt it’d go that far, but he should still have kids kept away from him due to his cringe worthy sex comments when covering content aimed at families and audiences of all ages. To sum up, CinemaSins sucks, Jeremy shouldn’t be taken seriously and Doug should mentally face palm multiple times for writing out his “going down” comment, thinking it’d be an ok “joke” to make, recording himself saying it, editing it into the video and posting it online for all to see. The next time he wants to go after someone for doing something creepy or acting like a creep, we can remind Doug that he defended two actual criminals he worked with and, if he tries pulling the “Twitter crap” any more, we can remind him he used the “n word” in one of his older episodes and how that by his logic should be one of the many reasons for him to be “cancelled.”

    I was not a fan of his review of the 1999 remake of "The Mummy", especially with him thinking that the establishing shot of Thebes in the prologue was just CGI, when in reality; with some excep-tions; most of the foreground effects (the Sphinx and the Plaza) were practical miniature effects by ILM, with certain live-action humans (including
    a lady walking her dog) shot on a green screen; and the stone wall, kneeling guards, and Pharoah Seti I riding his horse chariot were actually shot on lo-cation in Morocco.

    What's sad is that this movie happens tochave a major plot hole involving Thrax's plan. See, when your body temp goes up, it gives your immune system an even better chance to fight viruses, so by increasing Frank's temperature, Thrax would not kill him like he wanted and instead kill himself essentially. It's sad because Doug never brings this up, making this review look even lazier as a result.

    • @MagmaPaint
      @MagmaPaint  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Lots of people pointed out that Thrax doesn't behave like a virus detached from Doug's review and the heat contradiction isn't the only flag. Triggering Cytokene Storm (a body's last resort of fighting infection by raising internal temperature to fatal levels) and killing his victim as quickly as possible was Thrax's first, last, and only priority which would make him hella deadly. But any virus that does this is going to have a hard time spreading the infection to other people because there's no time to multiply (not that Thrax would be the kind to share the glory with clones of himself created a la Invasion of the Bodysnatchers). I might have to address this when I get to the Q&A video.

    What really gets me about the whole thing with people taking Doug's word as gospel is that he himself has stated time and time again that it's just schtick, yet people continued to do this. And Doug seems blissfully unaware of it. I remember in his audio commentary on the Adventures of Sonic review, he mentions the comments from people who say now as adults, they hate it, but he doesn't even acknowledge the possibility that most of them only said that because he said the show was bad in his NC review.
    For the 2D animations, as petty as that complaint is, you'd think by this point, he would have hired a professional 2D animator considering he can afford it now.

    • @MagmaPaint

      Since he's more or less become the face of internet reviews and he and the Critic character are one and the same at this point, I feel justified in holding him to the standard of the title of the former. And with what was revealed in the Not So Awesome document, responsibility appears to be something he and especially Mike Machaude are allergic to.

      @@MagmaPaint Is it wrong to ask if you would do a "Nostalgia Critic Doesn't Understand" video on Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog? While AoStH and SatAM also have the “Apples and Oranges” logic of compare and contrast, and that AoStH itself is a crazy attempt at turning Sonic into a tribute to Classic Cartoons, AoStH is not far from what Naoto envisioned (at the time of the cartoon's release). AoStH only focused on Sonic 1 and 2, and that includes both the Genesis and Master System versions, as there were concepts from the Master System version of Sonic 2 that became part of AoStH's episodic formula, like Tails being kidnapped by Robotnik.
      Other than Sonic 2 for the Genesis, which introduced the importance of the Chaos Emeralds, as well as the Death Egg, AoStH only went with the simplicity of the dynamic between Sonic, Tails and Robotnik (as well as Robotnik's Badniks, Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts). Also, upon my research, I took note that AoStH is one of those shows that has good continuity, and I even did a video dedicated to it, called [Continuity Nods in "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog"] highlighting things that were called back in future episodes, or a continuing stream of episodes highlighting character relationships.
      I don't know why Doug would think "AoStH is not as good as SatAM", when in reality, they were originally meant to be one show, based on the *Archie Comics* continuity of Sonic at the time of the comics' publication, but before SatAM got cancelled, resulting in that storyline retconned back to the comics... until Ian Flynn said "screw you, I'm rewriting the comics, because I can do what I want."

      @@robbiewalker2831 I don't know about the Archie Comics connection, but I might do a response for completionist's sake. I wouldn't call Ian Flynn the comics' patron saint like a lot of people but some of his worst writing days are exacerbated by the precedent Ken Penders left and Sega restraining and restricting the series too much and writers have to work around that

If you watched anyone else on CA back in the day, you saw the others who started on the site (my favorites being Linkara, Todd In the Shadows and Marzgurl) you saw them growing and evolving as creators... meanwhile, Doug felt like a recycle of jokes and commentary lazily cut and pasted into relatively unique scripts, with some at best weak and at worst, actually asinine commentary of someone who had not refined their tastes or style in almost a decade of this work. Then change the channel poisoned any good will and i followed the CA creators i liked (and who spoke out) in their exodus.

    As for the blood color thing, one example I could give is a movie my friends and I made called “Mindworms,” which is on my channel. The alien worms in my film have green blood, since they’re alien, and when they take over the humans, their green blood mixes with the humans’ blood since the anatomy is mixing, giving an in-universe reason for the zombies to have some green slime as blood. However, due to the carnage, dismemberment, swearing, and crass humor, it still wouldn’t make the film “less gory” as Doug Walker claims. Also, as for you mentioning that “Osmosis Jones” was originally PG-13, even though Doug pretty much never does his research, this one baffles me the most because he could’ve figured that out with just a simple read of the Wikipedia page or IMDB trivia section. I learned that back when I first watched the movie in around tenth or eleventh grade. I also think Doug was trying to make a point that nothing is 100% original, but he doesn’t do a good job of explaining it. The best way to word it is that “Osmosis Jones” wasn’t the first film to personify the immune system and “Inside Out” wasn’t the first to personify emotions, but both do creative ideas with their concepts.

      I kinda wanna see that as a crossover game now.
      Though I sh1t you not, Doug actually made the Sonic/MegaMan comparison in his Sonic OVA review and it was entirely on surface level similarities. Heck, I'd take a stab at saying that Sonic and Crash have more in common what with having protagonists that fight an evil scientist completely fucking up nature, sidekicks that do more intellectual heavy lifting and are the literal or figurative sibling of the protagonist, allies that are physically stronger and initially debuted as rivals, and the games deciding when to shake up the formula to keep things interesting even when doing so doesn't always pan out.

    There are similarities whenever Osmosis Jones involves the brain. Memory library, dream motion pictures, the subconscious, and decisions made by characters who personify parts of the psyche using a control panel/manual override with eye-vision screen/view window of the outside world.

    • @MagmaPaint
      @MagmaPaint  3 หลายเดือนก่อน
