      Totally agree! And the rearview Mirror cam which is mounted in the rear window too. But I think it puts too much liability on them because some states are two party, meaning that legally both the person recording and anyone recorded have to consent to it which I think is dumb considering how much of our lives is recorded in general. I think if those laws changed we’d see a ton of innovation in this space.

      @Jp-be9xx ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@joshjamescars But isn't recording in public a constitutionally protected act? Tesla cameras capture all different angles and I always wonder why more companies don't do it.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on you state. Some states have laws that require both parties to consent to video and or audio recordings outside of private property. These are outdated and antiquated laws IMO, but they’re laws nonetheless and carmakers take on liability if they include that. Tesla just takes on a ton of liability and then sometimes gets burned by it later (like them having to disable remote window operation because they don’t have a mechanism to automatically stop and reverse the windows if there’s resistance like every other automaker has since the eighties).

    • @Beyondesp
      @Beyondesp ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Seriously, agree, I was really tempted to order this as an option if I was getting a lexus or toyota. I thought this was going to be like the tesla system that records from all angles and integrates with the cars camera system...

    Josh, Thanks so much for this. Just picked up my 2024 RAV4 XSE with this Dashcam. The app is beyond glitchy, it’s useless. App on my iPhone will not pair no matter what I do. (Apparently this seems to be universal: 1 2/2 stars on the App Store). And remember, this is a DASH cam - only forward facing. It’s absolutely crazy that Toyota did not integrate it into its 360 degree camera built into the vehicle! I’m putting my Rove3 Dashcam into this vehicle - front, interior, rear cameras - all for less than $200 now. Flawless operation and amazing tech support.

    Hi and thanks for the review. I am currently shopping for a Venza and had wanted the Toyota dash-cam. It’s price is only $375 as an installed option from the factory, which I considered a bargain. The problem is that hardly any are built with it and the dealers want $1600 for the part and install. I thank you for the tip to get them to comp the install. I hope it works.

    Thanks for this review. I have a new 2024 Grand Highlander (here in the north Austin/ Cedar Park area). I have this dashcam but no real operational clues on how to use it. I have the app and have connected to the camera once successfully but there doesn’t appear to be any recordings on the chip. I’m putting a new 128GB micros card in it today. The original chip causes a continuous beeping like it is at full capacity or something but, again, I really don’t have any helpful operational documentation. I’m glad I found your offerings. I’ll checkout some more.

    As a manufacturer what you want to do if you make the camera is have video quality that is “good enough”. That enables the camera to capture more video which is the main goal. Is the SD card full size or mini? If the car is stollen you may be out of luck because it sounds like the camera footage is on the camera? Or is it in the app stored remotely? That is an important differentiator. The camera use case is phenomenal specific to ergonomics. So you’re saying it is glued to the glass? If one has to replace the windshield because of a large freeway rock,do you have to pay for reinstallation of the camera?

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very few dash cams store footage to the cloud. That would require a ton of bandwidth and data usage to be moving gigabytes of footage daily from the camera to the cloud and back. The ones that do that often come with a hefty data plan. And yes, the camera is glued to the windshield but it uses an adhesive pad that can be replaced and put on the new windshield.

    Hello, thanks for the video on the OEM. I was checking out the Toyota website, and it said the OEM dashcam has options, so I like how the footage looks. It's not the best or worst, but it does the job. I'd probably get it if I was buying a new Toyota for myself.
    Also, I have a question. It comes with 16 GB of storage. Can you upgrade it for more storage by getting a bigger SD drive? And can you delete old footage? If I had to get this cam, I'd get it for insurance purposes.

    Thanks for this video. We bought a 2023 Lexus GX last summer and wanted the camera but you get what's on the lot (last year anyway). I just bought a Garmin Dash cam Mini 2 and mounted it in the Lexus but that RED light that was on all the time was a No Go. I tried to hide it behind the rear view mirror but you just can't. I took it out and put it in my Tundra where it easily hides behind the rear view mirror. So now I want to get this OEM one. It's $295 from the dealer. The same unit needs to fit in every car they make, all of which have different windshields that are mounted at different angles, so there would need to be a different shroud for every vehicle in order to do that, which I assume is why that isn’t offered.

      @@joshjamescars That makes sense, but I bet they could design an adjustable shroud. Something that would telescope and have a soft rubbery head that could be lightly pressure-fitted against the glass forming a seal. I'm going to work on that, and who knows...maybe sell the idea to Toyota. 😁

      That likely means it is missing an SD card, in which case it won’t work. There’s a link to the manual for the camera in the description of the video and in it you’ll be able to find instructions on how to insert an SD card, etc. If that doesn’t work, take it to your Toyota dealer.

      That’s just the part, not including installation. Sometimes you can negotiate when buying a new car that they comp installation because you’re buying a car from them, but other times they make you pay for that and it could be up to 3 hours at $150-$200/hour. Also, I believe the GX uses the older OEM dashcam, not this version.

      Hello! Unfortunately right now there’s no negotiation happening since supply is so short (it’s a 4-8 month wait for an NX hybrid), so you’ll be paying MSRP if you want one. I would not pay anything more than that. So you put down a $1-2K deposit, wait, then when the dealer calls ask for a document called the “vehicle build sheet” which is a PDF that starts with “vspec…” and it’ll show you everything that’s on the car and Lexus’ retail price for it. And then it’s up to you if you want to pay for additional warranties and or tire/wheel protection, etc.!

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be between $600 and $1,000 total; the part I think is around $400 plus a wiring harness and a few hours of labor to that. The best thing to do is contact your dealer to get accurate pricing because it’s all over the board depending on how much they mark up pricing and labor. It’s not that I don’t want to give you a price, but it really does vary. Time wise, it can also be anywhere between 2 and 4 hours depending on how skilled the tech is and whether they’ve done one before. At my dealer, I specifically asked for someone who’d done them before. If that’s a master tech, your labor cost could shoot up.
      Also, if you’re buying a new vehicle, you might be able to negotiate the price down or negotiate labor be comped. Again though, totally dealer dependent.

    Great little video, Thanks! However I really wish I had paid more attention the quality of the actual dash cam video. Just installed one of these in our brand new Venza and couldn't be more disappointed. It's almost impossible to read a license plate of a vehicle stopped directly in front of me let alone anywhere else. No polarized lens so windshield/dash reflections are terrible. It's constantly struggling to set the white balance in sun/shadow driving situations. It drops frames periodically as well. I guess it'll help to show who is at fault in case of an accident but a total waste of $300 IMHO. When it fails I'm going back to VIOFO. I don’t actually know if that’s the case (and it definitely isn’t for every Toyota or Lexus) because it’s compatible with cars that don’t have the video mirror as an option, like the Camry and ES, for example. I believe the mirror just needs to be a home link or auto dimming mirror so that there’s a power line to tap into. But always ask a dealer to confirm compatibility!

    why not just use a go pro?

      Totally different use case. Dash cams aren’t for content creation but to have an always-recording record of what’s happening in and around your vehicle.

    Nice intro video. Does the system turn off when the car is turned off, or does it stay on and drain the battery,

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว

      It will record if the gyroscope detects the car being bumped while it’s parked but otherwise no, it does not. For hybrids like mine, battery drain isn’t a big issue either.

      Dashcams are useful for keeping an eye on the road and can also help you in the event that you get into an accident on the road. For example, if some merges into you or cuts you off in traffic. Or if you witness an accident on the road, it’s always good to have a record. They also trigger in parking lots if your car is hit so if you reverse in like I always do, if someone were to bump you while away, it will pick that up. Or, if you’re like me and just like to make videos it’s cool to always be able to pull a clip of your adventures on the road!

    @joshjamescars can i put 512GB MicroSd card for this?

      I don’t believe there’s a max capacity. I always keep a 256GB card in my dash cams.

    Did you install it yourself or did you have dealership install it for you? Im very interested with this accessory

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the dealer install it as it taps into wiring that’s near the safety system equipment and was not about to touch that myself. 😂

      I get his point tho, he means in the event of an incident. I run Viofos and have speed on but lat/long off, my philosophy is better to have it and crop/edit it out than wish it was there when it wasn't recorded. Similar driving style, 100mph+ highway cruiser in Texas, traffic permitting. Our highway road quality is simply that good, where that's left lane flow of traffic.

      @rhntx I find you all in DFW drive way faster than we do (which I love). I always say the DNT is like being in Mario Kart (and I drive that at least 5-6 times a year).

      It does but it was such a small capacity card I immediately replaced it with a 256GB SanDisk high endurance card.

    Most dashcams source their hardware from the same manufacturers. Sony produces the sensor for a lot of dashcams. So, the quality you get from most dashcams is essentially going to be the same. The premium you're paying for this is for it being integrated into the car. You don't have to go through the hassle of setting it up and hardwiring it to the nearest fuse. I've been through that, it's a pain to do. Now, one drawback to this integrated dashcam is that you cannot buy a random 3rd party model that runs off USB and just plug it in. Your only choice with this one is to hope Lexus comes out with a new one every few years that utilizes the latest hardware.
