    I was hoping it would integrate the backup cam for live recording. That would be a major bump in the value proposition. Regardless, thanks for the videos and perspective!

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Totally agree! And the rearview Mirror cam which is mounted in the rear window too. But I think it puts too much liability on them because some states are two party, meaning that legally both the person recording and anyone recorded have to consent to it which I think is dumb considering how much of our lives is recorded in general. I think if those laws changed we’d see a ton of innovation in this space.

    • @Jp-be9xx
      @Jp-be9xx ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@joshjamescars But isn't recording in public a constitutionally protected act? Tesla cameras capture all different angles and I always wonder why more companies don't do it.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on you state. Some states have laws that require both parties to consent to video and or audio recordings outside of private property. These are outdated and antiquated laws IMO, but they’re laws nonetheless and carmakers take on liability if they include that. Tesla just takes on a ton of liability and then sometimes gets burned by it later (like them having to disable remote window operation because they don’t have a mechanism to automatically stop and reverse the windows if there’s resistance like every other automaker has since the eighties).

    • @Beyondesp
      @Beyondesp ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Seriously, agree, I was really tempted to order this as an option if I was getting a lexus or toyota. I thought this was going to be like the tesla system that records from all angles and integrates with the cars camera system...

      It’s not, but that’s a good thing. See this article on how tesla actually uses and accessed people’s “private” camera footage: apple.news/ArrlpAkXQTO2hSHsRC5rWOg

    Josh, Thanks so much for this. Just picked up my 2024 RAV4 XSE with this Dashcam. The app is beyond glitchy, it’s useless. App on my iPhone will not pair no matter what I do. (Apparently this seems to be universal: 1 2/2 stars on the App Store). And remember, this is a DASH cam - only forward facing. It’s absolutely crazy that Toyota did not integrate it into its 360 degree camera built into the vehicle! I’m putting my Rove3 Dashcam into this vehicle - front, interior, rear cameras - all for less than $200 now. Flawless operation and amazing tech support.

      I get his point tho, he means in the event of an incident. I run Viofos and have speed on but lat/long off, my philosophy is better to have it and crop/edit it out than wish it was there when it wasn't recorded. Similar driving style, 100mph+ highway cruiser in Texas, traffic permitting. Our highway road quality is simply that good, where that's left lane flow of traffic.

    I purchased this dash cam for my 2024 Lexus GX 550 and had it installed by my local Lexus dealer. The fit and finish is, as you say, factory quality, however, on my installation there are air pockets trapped between the adhesive mount and the windshield. The Lexus installer says this is unavoidable. Do you or anybody that has performed the installation know of a way to remove the air pockets? The dash cam uses an aggressive adhesive and re-doing does not seem to be an option.

    Hi and thanks for the review. I am currently shopping for a Venza and had wanted the Toyota dash-cam. It’s price is only $375 as an installed option from the factory, which I considered a bargain. The problem is that hardly any are built with it and the dealers want $1600 for the part and install. I thank you for the tip to get them to comp the install. I hope it works.

    Very helpful, thanks. I am in Texas as well, and the sun cooked the circuit board of my Blackvue after a few summers. They were good to replace it, but still, the Texas sun is brutal. Hope this stands up to it. Was curious about parking mode, but you answered that in the comments. I guess this does not have an additional rear-facing camera option? I guess I could use my Blackvue for that. Really glad the integrated camera is now available. Thanks for all of the info in your video from a car owner perspective!

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s exactly my concern! And likewise, have had the sun cook a few really expensive dashcams. What is interesting to me is that since this one taps into the car’s wiring and thus can access power even when the car is off, it may not have a battery and that’s what swelled and killed my other dashcams. And unfortunately this doesn’t have a rear facing or interior facing option. I have the digital mirror which has a camera that’s perfectly placed in the rear window and if they could just add an SD card for local storage that would be a PERFECT rear facing cam. And thanks for watching and for your comment!

      @@joshjamescars Sounds like a good idea to integrate recording into the rear cam. Maybe that will come in the future. I didn't know that the integrated front dashcam was coming, so I am really happy to see that. I always had issues with battery drain in parking mode, even with a voltage sensor cut-off device. Since this one is integrated, that shouldn't be a worry. Even though I am not in Austin, I shipped my Blackvue to The Dashcam Store there for service. They were really helpful. Thanks again for your detailed videos. Hope your dashcam resists the heat and works well for you.

    As a manufacturer what you want to do if you make the camera is have video quality that is “good enough”. That enables the camera to capture more video which is the main goal. Is the SD card full size or mini? If the car is stollen you may be out of luck because it sounds like the camera footage is on the camera? Or is it in the app stored remotely? That is an important differentiator. The camera use case is phenomenal specific to ergonomics. So you’re saying it is glued to the glass? If one has to replace the windshield because of a large freeway rock,do you have to pay for reinstallation of the camera?

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very few dash cams store footage to the cloud. That would require a ton of bandwidth and data usage to be moving gigabytes of footage daily from the camera to the cloud and back. The ones that do that often come with a hefty data plan. And yes, the camera is glued to the windshield but it uses an adhesive pad that can be replaced and put on the new windshield.

      @@joshjamescars With Garmin, you can purchase a plan that uploads video when you get home and are in range of your Wi-Fi (or extender you mount in garage, etc.), but only for more recent trips. So not good for a lot of errands. I am not a fan of my Garmin because the camera to phone interface is problematic and the SD card only records in 10 second increments. So if you want a 'video' you are stuck downloading to phone while sitting there in the seat for what may take multiple attempts at very slow exchange speed.

    Good video! This week I had the dealer install the integrated dash cam in my '23 ES 350, and I agree with everything you said but I wish they'd made it so the microSD card was easier to remove without risk of having it fall into some deep crevice in the car where I'll never find it. I feel certain that will happen one of these days, and then I'll have to see if they stock a replacement part.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s why the SD card is attached to the little door that it comes out of. So you pull the door open and then pull the card out with it and that way you’re holding onto that piece the whole time.

    Most dashcams source their hardware from the same manufacturers. Sony produces the sensor for a lot of dashcams. So, the quality you get from most dashcams is essentially going to be the same. The premium you're paying for this is for it being integrated into the car. You don't have to go through the hassle of setting it up and hardwiring it to the nearest fuse. I've been through that, it's a pain to do. Now, one drawback to this integrated dashcam is that you cannot buy a random 3rd party model that runs off USB and just plug it in. Your only choice with this one is to hope Lexus comes out with a new one every few years that utilizes the latest hardware.

    Great product overview and awareness of possible unexpected or hidden costs. Maybe I missed it - when does it activate? I saw the reply comment about reverse-in parking and getting bumped whilst parked … so is it motion gyro/sensor activated, functions when the ignition is turned on, is it manually actuated (the “ACTION” button), etc.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So this works just like any other dashcam. When the vehicle is on, it’s always recording to the SD card in a series of 2-minute clips. As the card fills up, it overwrites older clips automatically unless the clip was flagged as potentially containing an accident which can be done manually by hitting the action button or automatically if the camera detects unusual motion thru the gyro/accelerometer. Those flagged files are saved to the SD card in a special folder that won’t be overwritten.

      The camera records in clips of 2 minutes long that start one right after the other so if you combined them it would be one uninterrupted stream of video. And you can change what appears in the stamp in the app.

    Thanks for the video. What was the total price of camera and the install.? How long did it take the tech to install?

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can be between $600 and $1,000 total; the part I think is around $400 plus a wiring harness and a few hours of labor to that. The best thing to do is contact your dealer to get accurate pricing because it’s all over the board depending on how much they mark up pricing and labor. It’s not that I don’t want to give you a price, but it really does vary. Time wise, it can also be anywhere between 2 and 4 hours depending on how skilled the tech is and whether they’ve done one before. At my dealer, I specifically asked for someone who’d done them before. If that’s a master tech, your labor cost could shoot up.
      Also, if you’re buying a new vehicle, you might be able to negotiate the price down or negotiate labor be comped. Again though, totally dealer dependent.

      Hello! It can record sound as well and you can choose whether it does or not in settings. It is important to note that in some jurisdictions it’s illegal to record audio without other parties’ consent and likewise, in some jurisdictions your unedited dash cam footage can be subpoenaed so know the laws and do what you feel is best whether that is in accordance with them or not ;)

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello! Unfortunately right now there’s no negotiation happening since supply is so short (it’s a 4-8 month wait for an NX hybrid), so you’ll be paying MSRP if you want one. I would not pay anything more than that. So you put down a $1-2K deposit, wait, then when the dealer calls ask for a document called the “vehicle build sheet” which is a PDF that starts with “vspec…” and it’ll show you everything that’s on the car and Lexus’ retail price for it. And then it’s up to you if you want to pay for additional warranties and or tire/wheel protection, etc.!

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @theodoregolob4191 It’s a personal opinion having dealt with them on a few different occasions. The video quality in Fitcam I’m sure is better but the Toyota OEM doesn’t set a high bar at all. And, I personally don’t want to replace any OEM components on my car with aftermarket pieces or interfere with the wiring up near the ADAS systems. Also, as someone who has done work in cybersecurity I always urge people to be more cautious than not when it comes to technology that has access to all the data lines in the car AND my smartphone.

      I’m guessing it was minimal, they would just have to drop the headliner in the front to access the wiring that goes to the mirror that the wiring harness for the camera taps into. This doesn’t wire into a USB port or some other far away power source like an aftermarket dashcam.

    • @clarkinthedark1

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely, though if you think about what you would have to do to install a regular dash cam and dress the cables nicely you’re actually loosening a lot of pieces all the way from the headliner down to wherever the USB port is yourself with tools that might not be made for the job too. I’m happy to leave that to Lexus.
