Persona 3 Reload Vs the Original Persona 3 and Persona 3 FES game. Is Persona 3 reload worth it as a fan of the classics? Persona 3 reload is a project by Atlus to remaster a beloved entry in the Persona series and one of my favorite personal games of all time. This will be a full review and analysis of Persona 3 Reload and how it stands up to Persona 3 original, FES and portable.

I will absolutely watch the entire video but did not expect this from someone who primarily uploads FPS content. Persona 3 is my #1 single-player game, life changing experience. A discussion I've had with a friend was Reload could've taken more chances to try new things but played it pretty safe. Some of the new music I'm not quite keen on as it felt some were changed for the sake of change while others felt completely refreshed and faithful. I agree with everyone that tone of the game feels less dark, especially outside of January. The new VA cast I think did a phenomenal job though and honestly see them as the new faces for the characters while still having attachment to the old cast. Overall I don't think Reload did anything wrong but had some presentation changes that weren't as thematic as they should've been and didn't try to take any risks whether it be through gameplay or presentation as well. The biggest blunder for me is the lack of developing The Answer and having the it be developed post launch and charged for extra. It's better than a new game entirely a year later for $70 but it's hard not to just modify FES with the party control mod and play the game for free, or just buy an original copy for less. EDIT: Since we all have nitpicks my personal one is the lack of portrayal of the use of the evoker by having it pulled out during the skill selection rather than after using the skill. I miss Makoto and Mitsuru spinning it into place it was always satisfying even if over the top.

"The new VA cast I think did a phenomenal job"
Disagree. With the exception of Zeno, none of the new actors are good.
Fuuka sounds like she is out of breath and will faint out anytime soon.
Mitsuru's sound doesn't have commanding tone the way original VA had.
Dont get me started on Akihiko and Ken.
It seems like very less time went towards voice direction and more towards marketing and we got mediocre voice performance in the end.

    • @Nebellune
      @Nebellune 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@saadmirza4221 Totally fine to disagree. I can't see what you mean personally, but I do think Shinjiro could've sounded more gruff and Fuuka less like Haru. I also don't get your point on how voice acting has anything to do with marketing. I don't think anyone bought reload based on VA's. If anything, people held concerns until launch if they would do a good job in their opinion. I knew none of them besides Allegra Clark and Aleks Le and I didn't feel more inclined to buy it due to that at all. If you've read that people did then I think that's a bit odd.

34:58 On the note of nitpicks with the evoker, I really miss how Makoto would spin his evoker when using his persona. I know that he spins it when you switch personas but it's not really the same. They could've even put the animation into the startup or something as your selecting which ability to use but he just puts it to his head normally. Regardless though I love reload and it's in my top 5 for sure

The changes were definitely catered to newer players only getting introduced to P3. I really enjoyed the social link reversals from the original, as well as the random skill inheritance in the original, but I'm sure players now would not take too kindly to that. I dunno, I just think the restrictions from the original is what made the replayability a lot higher. Now you can go willy nilly through the whole game in maybe 1 or 2 playthroughs.
That being said, reload still added many good things to the game, but beyond anything, it reintroduced this masterpiece to more people.

My take on the Nyx Arena in Reload is that in the original it kinda looks like they forgot the dark hour's moon is not white, so it looks like the fight doesn't happen during the Dark Hour, while in the remake they kept the colors of the Dark Hour for the final battle.

It's just an artistic choice that made for MUCH better art direction, and as with a bunch of things it Reload it was watered down and completely lost in translation.
The focus in the battle is obviously the oppressive feeling of the moon, Nyx, crushing down on the arena and the world at large and the arena reflects that idea. It's just like how all of the boss arenas for the 12 shadows distorted the area around them, it makes for a dynamic scene instead of just standing somewhere. Not to mention Nyx avatar looks WAY better without the piss green lighting...
Also it's not unlike how all of the Tartarus blocks themselves are completely unique and don't look much like the dark hour looks in the city.

  • @Gafafsg
    @Gafafsg 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

My least favorite cutscene moment in Reload is the Magician bitch slapping Yukari and the following slowmo shot. The original is not only more abstract and sharply edited, but it never shows the shadow attacking Yukari. It only shows her putting the Evoker to her head, then a second later falling to the ground, the Evoker landing in a mysterious puddle of blood.
(It also doesn’t show the shadow standing still over her body for what feels like 15 seconds)
A first time player won’t know if she’s even alive until AFTER Makoto has already picked up that same Evoker and summoned Orpheus. The tension of not knowing Yukari’s fate, and whether or not Makoto will share it, is the most tragic loss of Reload (alongside whatever happened to Thanatos).

38:54 I think that Junpei also really leans into that. He explicitly says that, before meeting Chidori, he really had no good reason to live. Hell, he didn't even know what he was fighting for, despite that being the one thing he was really good at. It's not until Chidori sacrifices her own life to save his that he finally gets the will to not just persist, but strive for more. To a lesser extent, you could even argue that Ken leans into this too. His life was consumed by a quest for revenge, driven by the man who took his mother from him two years ago. To finally come face to face with that man and then have that opportunity taken away from him, and not even in middle school, is a hard thing, but he eventually grows past it, finding a new reason for living.

Thanks for this honest and sincere review. I have a deep relationship with this game as it was there with me during the latter half of the worst years of my life when a large part of my family died. Your video gave me a few more reasons to keep going with it. I quit after the awakening scene and watched some of the rest. My greatest problem is the presentation; a combination of sound, voice acting, and scene direction with a heavy change in tone. All things that really hurt the feel of the game for me. That horrific, dark and sad atmosphere has been dulled and I can really tell the difference. It was painful to see, so I quit.
But after all these reviews I didn't know that they added in more time with the guys and the SLs are voice acted now, I do want to see that. And experience a less tedious Tartarus.

I really don’t understand how people can compare Tartarus to the hand-crafted palaces in P5/P5R. If anything it’s more akin to Mementos and the TV world due to their procedurally generated nature, and I gotta say, Tartarus in Reload is my favorite implementation among the three. I only really got fatigued at the very end of the game when I was grinding for certain weapon fusion ingredients, but for Mementos that happened at about the 2/3 point of the game, and the TV world bored me out if I ever set foot in the same world for a second time. Also in Reload you don’t need to revisit old floors that much to grind EXP or complete requests/rescue missions. I did all the requests and rescues, and I’d say on average I visited each floor about 1.5 times, whereas in P4G I had to visit each floor at least twice (bar the new dungeon added in Golden) to complete all the requests and secret bosses.

I think SEES were meant to be people who were disconnected to each other at first, but learned to bond extraordinarily through their hardships and struggles. The main character being the glue of the group since he's already come to terms with his major loss in life, he's able to teach them all something important about life. I think reload does a way better job at this. that was one of the worst aspects of the original, the ending scene doesn't hit as hard when you don't get the feeling they were actually becoming close to each other.

I think tartarus is supposed to be a reference to the place where the steep hill was in the tale of Sisyphus, who cheated death by capturing Thanatos. Sisyphus was condemned to roll up a boulder for eternity up this hill, meaning that when he got close to the top, the boulder would end up rolling back down somehow. This would explain the monotony and long ascend of Tartarus in P3, which mirrors the message relayed in Sisyphus since it had to do with being punished for cheating death. Interestingly enough, philosophers have attempted to recreate meaning in the message of the tale, where one can imagine Sisyphus finding peace and fulfillment in this endeavor, even though he was condemned to a pointless taks for all of eternity.

Tartarus is the lowest layer of hades's realm (hell) in the greek myths. Altough thats were Sisyphus ended up, the place in the game is likely based in tartarus as a hole, not just the steep hill.

33:40 I personally think the new Yellow tint of the dark hour fits the aesthetic theming of the larger modern Persona lore/world implications more. Especially since the color yellow tends to correlate with shadow-like worlds and the yellow eyes of shadow versions of characters. When you think about it the moon/Nyx being Yellow during the dark hour has been a thing for a hot minute and I've started noticing it during the final shots of P3D's OP. That said I do somewhat agree with the lime-green tint of the Dark Hour feeling off, and only because if it was a more Yellow hue the entire screen would look blinding.

Honestly, I never noticed the colour thing until you mentioned it. I knew P4 and 5 had a similar approach to how they treated shadows, both in terms of design and intent, but I forgot that 4's use of yellow as a means of discomfort extended to the environment.

I think the beginning scene with yukari in reload wants to convey something different then in the OG
in OG basically no one knew what the gun was actually for so just seeing it makes you think she wants to end herself so they uped the tension to make you feel really uneasy
in reload though there is a chance that the person playing has consumed or seen P3 media already and could know what evokers are for therefor it would feel a little weird to try and convince those people that she wants to end herself
by talking to herself yukari want to encourage herself to finally do it
new players would think she is gathering the courage to end herself while the people that know understand that she is seamingly scared to call upon her persona so the peptalk she gives herself makes more sense

Yeah but a story should be told through the context of not knowing anything about it, not through commercials or hearsay. I very much agree with a lot of your points and i must say this video is much mire respectable than other opinions of reload because instead of just shittying on the game for smoothing out the edges you give credit where credit is do and even point out things devs have said, especially in an age where everyone wants to claim developers want to scam the consumer and dont care about the game experience. One of my biggest opinions of persona 3 reload that i will always hold dear is that it's a response to a call. Yes, i love everything about burn my dread, its message, the symbolism, and yes, even that edge factor you mentiomed of "i shouldn't be playing this" all of that is true and ut us Goated, i also agree that full moon full life does shave the edges down to a dull point. But i think its important to understand and i think you do because how you conduct yourself, the original is still there, anyone can go play the original experience, those that want Ai party mrmbers (even though theres an option) those that want femc. Reload is a mature answer to an Edgy game that many many played as a kid or teenager. It was something that presented this despair and feeling in life that hurt to exist. traumas, pain, etc. Persona three has many messages about how life is short and to treasure each day, but in that same semse, i think a lot of people miss the message reload is portraying, and that's hopefulness in the face of despair more so than the original game, the characters, more fleshed out, the story. Structured a little better, the cast also becomimg closer. None of this is reflected more than in the op movie if Reload where you get all these DARK HINTS AT Things, Yukari's sad reflection in the water vs her smile in the mirror, junpei's happy go lucky demeanor vs the gunshots and blood of the dark horror (and probably chidori) the shinji, ken, and akihiko scene reflecting that whole situation, to mitsuru seemingly running from her problems. This opening, while yes, has a lot of just open stylish sequences made for someone who experienced the original or upon viewing after finishing you notice the details, and i dont think that elevates one over the other, the both have a reason to exist and are both very good. Equal, in my opinion. Then, the lighter aspects of the game, like the opening cinematic, I'll be blunt. I dont think it's that bad. While yes, i agree that the original was made as good as it was due to probably working around limitations, and it made you feel anxious and nervous. The edge wouldnt hit the same. And if anything with the modern day would probably have gotten bad media swarming it just for the edginess and is that a problem with society? Yes. But i also just think its an easy way to introduce fans who are newer without stabbing them, the p4 and p5 fans, and even the first p3 fans, we now have an easier entry into p3 that is mostly the original game, but just like with any game. If people want to play the classic, they have that opinion. It doesn't take the quality of reload down any for me. Personally petsona 3 fes and persona 3 reload both hit me in some of the worst times of my life and this time around i dont feel i need to fall into feeling that edge of the OG, i know the message and im seeing my cast of friends together again made with love and life in a new light, think reload respects your time as a fan and newbie alike and it for me is game of the decade, just like persona 3 was way back when. It got me through the hard times then. it's getting me through the hard times now. Im more mature, and i have my own philosophical beliefs. I personally think its time to release makoto from being the seal and eotber someone else (liz) take his place or wr admit that when people heal trauma, accept the truth, and rebel from control. We dont strive for death like suggested by nyx, we need a true philosophical challenge to nyx's answer to be able to justify makoto's life being free. But i think it's childish to believe that someone should suffer for all eternity and the weight of humanity because we can't move on

I just recently finished p3r. For context, I only ever played about 20 hrs of FES, only 40 hrs of the original p4, and all of p5 and p5r. I played p3r blind on Merciless.
First small note on the Nyx fight, while I do think the old Nyx gives a lot more of a dreaded feel, Nyx is just plainly horrifying, and the old black and white scheme makes it all the more unsettling, I prefer the new Nyx since that ambient green glow gives a more "godly" feel. Like it was the Rapture.
Anyways, main thing I wanted to talk about was my experience with the game. Coming out of it, I loved the game, and I'm confident even more than p5. Somewhere in the 40-50 hr range I had the thought that it felt like nothing was really going on. That I didn't really like the story or social link since, to me, it felt like you were kind of along for the ride while the characters sorted their issues themselves instead of you actually helping, which I felt you actually helped the characters in p5 with the social links.
Then Aragaki happened and it all flowed from there. I was invested and grinded hard for 3 days straight. I was completely sold by the story, the twists, and the characters. It was only after I finished Akinari's social link in the last month that I realized what it was. The characters actually doing things themselves, supporting each other and developing from the main story, and being able to develop further in the social links, not because you directly helped, but because you were just there to support them. That it was the bonds that was pushing everyone forward.
I gotta say, that last month was something else. The entire time, I was dreading the Promised Day. When I realized the color was saturated, I was terrified. I was trying to finish the 3 social links I wanted to finish in that month, but Aigis was also there, and there were some optional stuff that I felt I couldn't pass on. I was trying so hard to plan it all out to get it done. Not to mention devoting a bit more time to Tartarus, cause I swear, there was a spike in difficulty there. You don't understand the amount of dread I felt when I hit the last Monday, and there was a scripted event that took away my Aigis opportunity and I thought I couldn't finish it in time. Sat in anguish for a good 10 minutes. Luckily, I just forgot to count the last Saturday.
The last day came around, and I went to literally everywhere I could. Met everyone doing their own thing and almost cried from that. There was genuinely nothing for me to do that day, so after clicking on every interactable thing in the map, I went back to my room and just slept.
When we went to Tartarus on the Promised Day, surprisingly the dread was gone. It was just hype to get to the top from there. I overprepared, so the Strega fights weren't really challenging, though Takaya still threw me off last second. But that Nyx fight really felt like you were fighting a god. I didn't get the same feel in the original p5 cause it kinda just felt like a contraption. But p3r really felt unsettling and hopeless. I had that drive pushing me, doubly so since it was Ryoji, but the fight just kept going and going, I was expecting it to just stop mid fight cause it would be one of those where you actually can't take him out. When it finally ended, I was so excited. Then the climax of it with the conclusion scene just left me in silence the entire time. Once I was done, I wasn't sad cause of the ending nor did I get that usual empty feel from finishing such a good story. I was just happy and satisfied.
I really am excited to see what the Answer has. I've heard it was divisive, and I ALWAYS down for those kinds of stories. It really can't come any faster cause the prospect of Aigis as the actual protagonist seems like a very interesting move after she was so greatly written in the base game. But (presumably) seeing Aigis find her answer to the question the MC already resolved for himself is something I can't wait for.

If you think of original P3 and P3R in the same context with Eva and the Rebuild movies, then it kinda makes more sense in my head, especially with the lackluster sections of the emotional impact of the latter. Will Atlus go that route? Hard to tell, hopefully we don't need to wait 9 years for that. All I can say is, in this headcanon, Liz sure did quite a bit to temper the severity of this worldline. Is it enough to loosen the shackles of Door Jesus? Again, hard to say. And watching your video till the end strengthens the likelihood of that headcanon to be true.

I think for theurgy nerfing, DO NOT drain ALL the gauge for each battle done because that sounds so irritating and not every battle would necessarily grant access to the theurgy gauge. I think 50% reduction when theurgy is full but not used after each battle is alright with me. Saving limit break like abilities is part of the fun of an RPG.

Of course comparing tartarus to the palaces is gonna be an unfair comparison, I think comparing it to mementos is a more apt comparison though. Mementos was super boring for most of persona 5 I found, because I just wanted to go to the palaces, but I had either finished the palace or needed to grind in mementos (to beat okumura) Mementos was just a side thing that only became interesting at the very very end of the game, whereas tartarus imo is much better at introducing new elements that make the floors at least a little more interesting to progress through. Tartarus also made me feel like I was progressing towards something, it was clear there was a top floor from the very beginning, it's teased from the very beginning and throughout the game that reaching the top of tartarus will be important, but mementos does not get that treatment. It's barely even a side mystery because no effort is spent on even trying to understand what mementos is until the very end of the game. It's a difference in story focus and story telling as well as in reload better and more interesting mechanics that make tartarus a much more engaging experience than mementos.

I get where you are coming from and it is a very valid point of view. Like you, I played FES (including “*gasp* the enemy - the answer) and P3P (although Kotone only in this one; it feels very persona 4ish). With that said, I love Reload so much it is in par with P5R being still very faifhful to the original, with like Stupei Ace Defective and some other scenes that are 1:1. If you stop to think about it, Hashino is a mad lad for not using the Press-turn system in Persona, although the game was running in the Nocturne/DDS engine and most demons were originally from those games.

8:15 interestingly the reload version takes more aspects from p3p. Yukari talks in that version too which kinda ruins the mood. To me FES has one of the best intros to any game ever exactly because of that opening scene. The initial thought is obviously that Yukari is suicidal and her immense anxiety and silence makes the scenario feel so tense and almost painful to watch. It also keeps on building tension the first time you meet her and she goes for her gun, still very anxious. Then when the reveal happens and you unlock Orpheus that catharsis of realizing where all the tension was building is so cool and satisfying. Yukari almost feels a bit goofy in reload by comparison. Yukari's entire personality feels a bit awkward and stiff in FES when you meet her but in Reload she feels like a bit of a clutz. It's not a huge change but to me it's things like that that make FES' story feel better than Reload's.

BUTTTT, I kinda wish they used more scenes and their moments from the movies because the scenes that are good are VERY GOOOOD in making the story focused on the main characters. I don't want Persona 3 to become more cinematic and linear, but I think some of the story sections really should've shown the writers know how to make Persona 3 the most RAWWWW it can be emotionally and in moments.

I'd say besides the weaker directed cutscenes, a few of the remixed tracks not hitting as hard, and the less visually interesting backgrounds during some of the full moon boss fights, three very legitimate and impactful criticisms, Persona 3 Reload is an objective replacement over the original for me, and this sentiment is only going to ring more true once The Answer drops later this year. Full voice acting for social links, beautiful character models, better combats, tons of quality of life improvements, higher quality visuals, stronger voice directions, link episodes, more social activities to do at night, etc. Like, what more does Atlus have to do for older hardcore fans to consider this a worthy replacement? I swear, you can make a game that's 95% amazing but as long as there is a minority of weirdos who are too emotionally attached with small trivial aspects of the original game that is largely inconsequential, the remake will always be considered less than what it actually is in their eyes. This unhealthy attachment to the past always resurfaces in online discourse every time an older game gets remade, and frankly, it's pathetic.

Thanks for detailing some of the most significant changes. It's unfortunate that Reload tries hard to be a softer game. There's another scene that was changed, Man With Headphones, which was this chilling animated scene originally and became a very meh 3d slideshow. Reload is still incredible but I hate that it rejects the roughness of the original. You can hear it in the music too - almost every battle track is less crunchy in the remake, less percussion. Vocals are better in the majority of the songs but they lose all their power.

original is better by a mile, not just the tone but the writing is stronger too, where the new is CENSORED in localization (just look up how, its a lot)
    - tone is ruined by the sanitized visual look
    - voice acting weaker cause none came back except a few
    - casualization means the game design is weaker than before, not improved just coddled
    - censorship removing characters, beach "girl" for social agenda
    - lgbt pin in the intro of the game to pretend to be "progressive" just virtue signal injected where it doesn't belong
    - p5 coat of paint making it inconsistent
    - losing things in Tartarus, search function gone, stamina system - "player friendly" is just coddling design
    - dlc for content that should be there in the base (THE ANSWER) and music tracks
"appeal to the broader community" means nothing of value just casualization, sanitization, censorship and coddled design that makes the game forgettable, always a warning sign to a series that says that

I don't know if I'd personally say the original is still necessary after Reload. I think in general the original does have tonal changes that make it feel more impactful in some regards, but also archaic in others. Yes the mood comes out in everything, but it also does just make it look aged as a whole. Plus it's hard to justify using the old combat system which was extremely hated even at the time. If you were to replay the original you'd be doing it with the FES mod on PC to fix that.
Still I'd struggle to say the game stands up as well vs Reload in the modern market. Many of the changes do make the game more digestible and approachable. A great example is Majora's Mask. Majora's Mask's biggest feature is the 3 day system that adds new mechanics no other game has, character routines, and things you can only do by remembering the cycle. But people were afraid of the game because of that cycle, even though the cycle was over 3 hours, or more with the time slowed down, people still feared the limitation.
Persona 3's mood system was very similar in this regard. Yes it added more thought and implication for your actions, but it also just deters people from playing it.
