My buddy has a 1x12 valve state, its a great amp for classic rock. Great video Glenn! You really had my wheels turning with this one.

I would love to see you describe and demonstrate your method for phase aligning cabs that are playing the same signal. Thanks for all the help!
Hey Glenn. Here's an idea that works for me. How about adding a fuzz pedal or effect between the guitar and amp. A lot of those swedish metal bands used a lot of gain. Hope this helps. Love the channel.
You know the funny thing is Chuck Schuldiner knew this years ago.He was hip to the Marshall Valve-State while others laughed at him... Think about "Death-Symbolic". That guitar sound is freaking great.
So happy to hear this because I actually got my old 8100 head modeled into BIAS. Please take your time doing it right. Static-x , fear factory, death, distortion is really where it’s at.
man this opens my eyes to how much smoke and mirrors goes into recording many new and experienced guitarists are constantly chasing the high of nailing the sound off a record but you never will because of all the double tracking with multiple instruments/amps ect. just get something that sounds good and rock out!
It's really disappointing at first...but you get over it and you can finally buy gear just buy gear you like, & worry about the recording process later once you accept it.
@@protakill people fap about all this gear & tbh they need a Microblock 45 & a cheap clone distortion pedal. MB45 & Donner Morpher > a lot of more expensive gear.
It has been like this for over 50 years now, in one form or another. Phil Spector (yes, the convicted murderer) started working on his "Wall of Sound" technique with multiple instruments all the way back in the 50's (so almost 70 years really).
Amazing thanks Glen I'm such a newbie with tones recording (badly :) but playing recording 30 years You explain such important and interesting things so well I feel guilty getting such great content 4 free
This is the second time I'm hearing you talk about how good a Valvestate 2000 AVT is. I had them on my mind years ago and finally bought one after you said how good they were the first time. AVT 50 Combo. Got it just before Christmas. First thing I did was shit can the 18 year old Marshall 12ax7 tube and put in a new JJ ECC83S in it's place. Noticing the back of a JCM 900 was open I did mine the same way. Finally I bought it a Weber Legacy 12 speaker. So for a little more than $300.00 I have an amp that totally kicks ass.
Not to say it sounds deeper or wider or anything, but it adds that additional dimension to the sound that might have been missing or people been looking for. Anyways, really cool vid. Thanks.
As someone who has multiple Valvestate heads here is some general info for potential buyers!: There are 3 Versions of the Head that you could/should buy. That is the 8100, the VS100 and the 8200 (wich is rare). The 8100 is the original one. First Gen. If you like the sound of Death get this one. Its the exact amp that Chuck Schuldiner used. They are good amps but the reliability isnt all that great. They tend to have problems with caps leaking and pots doing all kind of scratchy noises. Then there is the second gen head, the VS100. This is my go-to. It´s important to know that the Valvestates are neither solid-state nor valve amps. They are a hybrid system where the preamp has a 12AX7 tube in em. The big difference between the 8100 and the VS100 is that the preamp tube is only active on the clean channel for the 8100. This gives the amp a bit different OD sound. On the VS100 the preamp tube is used for both cleans and OD1+2. If you can´t find a 8100 (wich is likeley since they are getting harder and harder to find) or are scared because of reliability issues go for this one! They are great amps wich can get you basically the same tones as the 8100 but are way more reliable due to having better build quality and thicker boards. Also they feature a "power dimension" switch wich gives them a ton of low end. I am sure if Glen would have used that in the mix with the 8100 it would have sounded monstrous. In general a very flexible head. Then there is the 8200 wich is ridiculously hard to find. Its a stereo version of the 8100 and features a chorus. If you ever see one, buy it!! Prices are rising. You may wonder why I am telling you this. The reason is simple. As stated i own multiple of those heads. They are dirt cheap and usually go for 200-300 dollars. They will outplay E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G in that price range with a good cab. Get yourself one before they are gone. Many of the 8100s are already fucked because of the neglect they´ve gathered since the 90s. If you are for a good metal tone on a budget go for one of those instead of this fcking amp sims and everything! And if you want to make some money you are good to go as well. As said prices are rising! It´s not really easy to find a lot of info on the internet about those amps so I hope I could help you all!
Who cares about some random guy named Darrel...oh I see you mean Pantera, lol. I remember the first time I heard Vulgar Display of Power and the whole sound was so cool and very unique, I didn't know much about production then but the sound of that album is just perfect, guitar drums and vox!
@@Joshcheyka Well it wasn't the classic Marshall/Mesa that's true but I thought his tone went great with the band and the band sounded great so you'd have to say the tone was great
Wow really scooped at 125 225 Hz on the spectrograph. I am going for slayer sound by blending the lower mids at 125hz by low passing the guitar, and high passing the bass there
Pantera's sound evolved after "Cowboy's" as did Slayer. On "Christ Illusion" there is way less chainsaw midrange, and compressed full sounding drums. Listening to Andy Wallace's drum sound on "Reign in Blood" is like listening to "When the Leavee Breaks" on Zep IV . Big Room sound , zero reverb . Those early recordings were mastered at a low volume, in comparison to today. Even "South of Heaven" was a couple Dbs less than anything after 1999.
I had a valve state vs265r back in the mid 90s and it was a beast for gigging. It was I believe a 2x12 65 watt times 2 amp. But it had powered out to cab and running out to a marshal 4x12 cab was amazing
AWESOME!!...You sir, will get all the credit for making my Marshall 265 Valvestate Chorus amp, jump in price! They were sleeper ss hybrid tube amps, until you and Johan Segeborn, started dialing in great tonez, and turned people onto their low cost! Btw, a Kool trick with the Marshall VS, is to give the effects loop knob a turn to 3:00 o'clock & it uses all that pre-amp tube gain stage!
You can get some pretty amazing tones through amp blends! One of my favourites is blending two amps, one with a higher wattage (Above 15w) and a 12 inch speaker with a smaller low wattage amp with a smaller speaker (5w + 8 inch for instance). Phil X does something similar!
My first "real" amp was an 8040 when I was a kid and I loved that thing. Unfortunately it got stolen and since then Ive owned alot of much more expensive amps and have even built a few of my own. 20 years later my sister's boyfriend picked one up in a pawn shop. I took one look at it and instantly knew it was my old amp! I was expecting it to sound shitty to my more mature ears but i was instead reminded of how good the amp really was! Definitely a unique sound.
The cleans are highly dependent on Gibson humbuckers. The amps don't even play nice with a stock Strat. Active pick-ups are out of the question. The valve preamp is too hot.
I have a valvestate 8040 since the first time they came out it was my first amp my dad bought it to me as a present when i was a kid its never fails of anything i still have the box
Back on the clayman album, they were using 11-56 string gauges and he has been using the Les Paul forever, a lot of the time he played the neck pickup as well. This was pretty damn good too nice job Glenn!!! Oh and by the way I play solidstate amps, tube amps are great but they're too temperamental for me they sound different in different climates just to my ears, what I love about solidstate amps is I can always count on it, it's reliable and sounds the same everytime.
That sounds so epic. And that clip was greatness man. You talk down too much on your guitar playing, I’d play in a band with you, you’d mop the floor with me. Love the videos, keep them coming.
Clayman tone was fantastic. I also loved the tones from Reroute to Remain and Soundtrack to your Escape. Both very heavy but clear and focused. I wonder what Glen thinks...
I love how you are not the best guitarist but always find killer riffs, that what makes you a great player PS : after 12 years of guitar I just bought a Valvestate 8080 for nothing. Definitely a great value for money. The good classic Marshall sound, I love it !
I love the old Valvestate VS100 amps. Had one since the late 90's, and just bought a VS100RH (head) the other day. So I can stack it on top of my Blackstar S1-100 EL34B head, and plug it into my Blackstar S1 412 Pro cab, when I feel like playing it. 🤘🏻
I bought one of these on a whim because it was dirt cheap. I liked it so much I bought two more. Such an amazing amp. Here's a cool trick to make it sound better: Turn the FX volume all the way up, then turn off the FX loop with the button by the FX volume knob. It really tightens up your midrange and makes it less flubby.
This amp begs to be fondled. I found quirks like this in my amp, you have to make sure it's dialed in check the pots if your not getting the Gain you deserve. 😱
Yeah just lacks mids (I think the 8100 is the better amp), so the FX knob trick works, the mids knob is like treble and the treble is like presence. When dialed right you can change the sound easily with just the contour knob.
I bought the 8100 valvestate around 96' and the only reason was because it had the most distortion out of all of the amps there in the room. If I had understood boost pedals back then, I may have bought a different head. But you can get get good sounds from it, as Glenn said, you have to really dial it in and mic placement is absolutely crucial for a decent sound.
Back in the mid 90s I was broke. Bought a valve state 8100 at a local shop for $500 brand new. I soon joined a cover band playing 3 nights a week $100 a night for me... so; the amp payed for itself more than easily. I played it through a laney 4/12 with H/Hs. I really didn’t like it then. I mean I was sharing the stages with bands that had modded 800s and I believe the first of the EVH lines were out. When I played some of those I was in shock over how much better they were than my 8100. I was just a punk kid playing in bars... today I want another one. Just for the good old days and a few laughs. Today I fredmen Splawns (Marshall) and rectifiers. It’s worked ok. Great video!!!!
I know "you could" but for those of us with limited mic selections, could you try this setup with "brighter" and "darker" mics in their respective spots? It would be awesome to see how far you can push the bright/dark concept. Thanks for always sharing the good-good!!
Gleeeeennnn, when you said Marshall Valvestate it blew me away cause that makes so much sense. That amp, in combination with the Boss HM-2 was the standard for the swedish death metal tone from the 90. Why didnt i think of that??? goddammit!! so many years of research and it was always on my face!
I had a valvestate in 2009 - 2015. It was an amazing amp. My first thought when I tried the overdrive channel was that it sounds like In Flames lol Also when in band practice when I turned up that combo (with 2 G75T speakers), the palm mutes were amazing, crunchy, and very punchy. I always thought it was the speakers, but it was the amp with these specific speakers, it sounded amazing. I always regretted selling it when I needed Money.
Cleansing was one of my all time favorite guitar sounds. Goddamn that album rocked! Got to see Prong, Pantera, and Sepultura in south Austin back in the day. That concert fucking rocked!
I heard those isolated guitar tracks on my phone speaker... and they still sounded great. Wow. The high notes almost reminded me to the intro of Dragula by Rob Zombie. Everything is just right

Adding bass guitar really helps with making it all sound better. That is what stuck out to me, then the 5150 sounded better by itself rather than blended with the valve state. My buddy has a 1x12 valve state, its a great amp for classic rock. Great video Glenn! You really had my wheels turning with this one.
Clayman is such a great record
I’ve never commented here before but I’ll give it a try. I think your rant videos are funny (even though I don’t always watch them) but I really love it when you bust out the DAW and get nerdy about mixing and such. I would love to see you describe and demonstrate your method for phase aligning cabs that are playing the same signal. Thanks for all the help!
Hey Glen, That guitar sound is amazing!
Love your distorted tones, man! Love the rawness.
Your playing is so awesome now.
Lots of practice = talent
Cheers.
We are making a VS8100 plugin in this very moment :D
Audiority Sound Library WHAAAAAATTT???!!! Please tell me more.
Following this. I'm too big of a Death fan not to.
So happy to hear this because I actually got my old 8100 head modeled into BIAS. Please take your time doing it right.
Static-x , fear factory, death, distortion is really where it’s at.
Nice! My 8100 is a bit noisy when DI'd.
That sounds nice!
man this opens my eyes to how much smoke and mirrors goes into recording many new and experienced guitarists are constantly chasing the high of nailing the sound off a record but you never will because of all the double tracking with multiple instruments/amps ect. just get something that sounds good and rock out!
It's really disappointing at first...but you get over it and you can finally buy gear just buy gear you like, & worry about the recording process later once you accept it.
The good thing nowadays is that there is so much good equipment at a reasonable cost that it's possible to get a killer tone.
@@protakill people fap about all this gear & tbh they need a Microblock 45 & a cheap clone distortion pedal.
MB45 & Donner Morpher > a lot of more expensive gear.
Jared dines needs to make a video of shaving his head
It has been like this for over 50 years now, in one form or another. Phil Spector (yes, the convicted murderer) started working on his "Wall of Sound" technique with multiple instruments all the way back in the 50's (so almost 70 years really).
I had a Valvestate for years one of the best Amps ever
Amazing thanks Glen I'm such a newbie with tones recording (badly :) but playing recording 30 years
You explain such important and interesting things so well I feel guilty getting such great content 4 free
Thanks.
As someone who has multiple Valvestate heads here is some general info for potential buyers!:
There are 3 Versions of the Head that you could/should buy.
Do you know the differences between a 65r valvestate and the 8100?
I kinda remember a guy named Darrel that used a solid state amp. His tone was mid scoopy if I'm being honest, but nobody hated him for it.
Who cares about some random guy named Darrel...oh I see you mean Pantera, lol. I remember the first time I heard Vulgar Display of Power and the whole sound was so cool and very unique, I didn't know much about production then but the sound of that album is just perfect, guitar drums and vox!
His toned sucked
Fuck I love this channel! I don’t play guitar, but the recording and mixing in the box info has taught me so much. Thank you for all you do Glenn.
Nice demos. Even while I don't have the same gear, hearing the sounds helps me use what I have a little better.
I had a valve state vs265r back in the mid 90s and it was a beast for gigging. It was I believe a 2x12 65 watt times 2 amp. But it had powered out to cab and running out to a marshal 4x12 cab was amazing
Nice this is so close to my live sound. Mesa duel recto with a vs 8200. I’ve the the vs for 25 years brought it brand new and would never give it up
I just realized you got Felicity Feline on drums. You're the devil Glenn!!!!
Glenn!!! That sounds really great man! Might not be the tone you are looking for but it sounds AMAZING!!!
When your old videos pop up in my feed it really strikes me how much weight you’ve lost. Good on ya Glenn, keep it up!
First video I've seen. Great stuff. Always awesome to find an In Flames fan.
Great video on the mic clip. Just picked one up for my studio... Thanks for the tips and such...
Awesome tone, and one of the best drummers I think you've had on the channel! Horns up! \m/
I had a vs100 head back in the 90's and I absolutely loved that thing... I wish I never sold it.
I just sold mine - it was arse compared to a DSL. Dunno why people rave about them. You’re better off without it 😎
Get one before Josh from JHS reviews it!

The valvestate is a really underrated Amplifier especially for heavy tones cleans aren't bad but for heavy you can get so many great sounds
Glenn, those harmonies and mix make me straight up think of Anacrusis! Love it!
Loved my valvstate. I had the 200w version. I run through an axe fx 3 these days. Love the options and versatility
This sounds like the tone that dismember has on there guitar tone and it's actually pretty close I'm pretty impressed
The MosFET 100 had a lot of potential as well. I loved mine. Wish I never traded it. Got another one later but it was thrashed. Mine was mint.
God it sounds so good. the hm300 buzzsaw tone has resurfaced and i hope this old-school Gothenburg tone does too.
Also Glenn, you really have grown on me my friend, love the info in ur vids 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
Clayman tone was fantastic. I also loved the tones from Reroute to Remain and Soundtrack to your Escape. Both very heavy but clear and focused. I wonder what Glen thinks...
I love how you are not the best guitarist but always find killer riffs, that what makes you a great player
PS : after 12 years of guitar I just bought a Valvestate 8080 for nothing.
Damn, those drums were killer. Thanks for doing this. I love In Flames. Bjorn Gelotte is my guitar hero
I need a trick like that to tighten up my girlfriend 🤣
@@michaelsorenson3887 lol
An eq in the loop also helps
Sound of Perseverance is the one of the clearest, most cutting tones. It just jumps right through the mix and sings. And its a valvestate.
Marshall is the king! Blended with modern amps and cabs its a killer in a mix
Just ordered a couple of those red mic holders, thanks for making me aware of them.
I know "you could" but for those of us with limited mic selections, could you try this setup with "brighter" and "darker" mics in their respective spots? It would be awesome to see how far you can push the bright/dark concept. Thanks for always sharing the good-good!!
I could swear I saw a comment/review from you on the fredman page when I ordered my clip a few months back.
Actually was a Peavey bandit... You can see a lot of amateur videos of Scandinavian bands in the early 90s using this very amp.
Everytime I watch your videos I just want to record records. You da man Glenn.
I had a valvestate in 2009 - 2015. It was an amazing amp. My first thought when I tried the overdrive channel was that it sounds like In Flames lol
Also when in band practice when I turned up that combo (with 2 G75T speakers), the palm mutes were amazing, crunchy, and very punchy.
Awesome video man. Love view of the back yard. Have a great day.
Man, that sounds great!
I also appreciate how down to earth and appreciative you are
Ty!!
I had a valvestate 20 years ago. I may have to pick one up.
I heard those isolated guitar tracks on my phone speaker... and they still sounded great. Wow.
The high notes almost reminded me to the intro of Dragula by Rob Zombie. Everything is just right
