even under a good label fame is still taking away freedom
Suga lately talked about how he misses simple things in his life that he can't do now
From the 2018-19 docuseries: "You lose as much as you gain. You gain as much as you lose. For me, I lost the ordinary. That’s the biggest change. What that means is - what’s ordinary to others is very special to me, whereas what’s special to others is very ordinary to me. Then, before you know it, your set of values changes, the values with which you see the worlds."

I think more than the label in that statement, he’s talking about the fame like you said. Things like fast food or a home cooked meal are very normal for me and it’s special when I go to a fancier restaurant. For Yoongi and many other idols, it’s the other way around. He can’t do things like get a home cooked meal from his parents very often. He can’t go to fast food even though it seems like such a simple thing, people would immediately recognize him. He can however go to fancy restaurants because he has the money for it and it’s probably the only food place that has privacy for celebrities. Their lives get turned upside down and backwards with fame. Like he said, the values completely change and you know what is truly important.
Thank you for this comment, it really made me think again and I hope someday they can get privacy and have families and love that they deserve 💜

I understand where Justin is coming from when he says, “You don’t have to do this anymore. Music is skill based and anyone can get big now ” but it seems like he’s coming from a very western perspective. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it kind of overlooks the struggles that POC face when breaking into the industry. How many Asian artists, who are not BTS or BlackPink or a group from a major Kpop label, has made it onto the Billboard Hot 100? I’m Asian American and I can only name a handful and most of them are Half-Asian and don’t talk about their Asian roots too often.
I think because of social media, there has been more visibility for new and upcoming artists, but I do think that race/nationality is still a factor. Look at BTS. The first song of theirs that made #1 on the billboard charts was a song written in English. They literally had one of the best selling albums worldwide in 2019 with Map of the Soul: Persona but most of the awards they received were for best social group or best Kpop group. They’re often snubbed for album of the year, etc. and that just goes to show how the west has not fully accepted Asian artists into its sphere.
This is all to say that sometimes signing with a label is the only option for these Kpop artists. Sometimes it is their only path to the “top.” It’s incredibly unfortunate and sad, but it seems like that is the reality. I think at the end of the day, the music industry just has to do better in protecting and taking care of their artists, so that their path to the top is safe and worthwhile.

Yea it's mostly because of xenophobia, racism and narrow mindedness of people that made them not to accept that these artists have already outperformed most artists in their country. It is true that music has no barrier but people still close their doors to these artists because they think everything only revolves around their country

Not really, you can even try your solo career alone and independently, but if it is someone who can only sing and not produce what s/he will do? And how will s/he be able to promote himself in weekly shows like "Inkigayo", "Mubank" ect or rather how will that person be able to be recognized in Kpop without having something that brings fans? Album sales?
CL wanted to be independent but she realized that without a Label she would not go anywhere...
I give you the example of a group that I really like (my fav rookie group aaah) that debuted on August 7, 2020 - *TREASURE* a new group from YG Entertainment, do you really think that if they were not premiered with the name of YG behind them they would be called "Global monster rookies"?
I don't say that they are called that because they are from YG but YG aka YG stans were the ones that helped them, the same for Winner, iKON and Blackpink they were all called "rookie monsters" and won Rookie of the year (ROTY) award.
The same for the new girl group of SM "Aespa" or for the new boy group of Bighit "Enhypen" the companies in the case of Kpop are the ones that help most in recognition that's why few try to make a career alone so they just wait years and years until they are chosen, and if they try we don’t even know because they are insignificant without a company, *sad but true*
That’s why when the company is very small and poor they sign an agreement with large channels to promote their groups like *1theK* most of these groups that are promoted at 1theK are groups with poor companies...BTS was promoted there before Bighit was a rich company
Edit: I'm back do give you all the example of Holland...as much as people love him (including me) if he didn’t have all that controversy with koreans for being gay almost nobody would know about him

yes, it is way too different, examples are as we can see how they prioritize the members health. like again suga went under a surgery for his shoulder and he is not gonna participate in bts upcoming album release promos, this is not the first time suga didnt participate in bts promo activities he did that in save me era too, and in fire era in some award shows, he went under surgery that time too, thats one of the reasons many like bighit groups more, personally I am not a fan of kpop industry but bighit contracts are normal artist/company contracts. another example that even outside kpop or anywhere in the world u dont see companies that just hand out stocks to the artists and singers under them, bighit literally handed out shares to bts members and all of them are now share holders in company. cuz they are literally the main outcome of the company so they acknowledge that.

We just got told today that Yoongi, aka SUGA of BTS, finally had surgery for his shoulder that has been injured since 2012 - yes, 8 years of pain, physical therapy and injections later, he finally had his surgery on 3rd November. He dislocated it when he was hit by a car as a trainee and has suffered from it since with his ligament even being torn etc. We are super happy that he finally did the surgery and he is currently recovering but will not be taking part in their performances for their new album getting released on the 20th as he will be resting - AS HE SHOULD BE. 💜
BTS have recently however become key shareholders in their company and have also renewed their contacts which is definitely a big step and gives them even more of a say in their careers and lives which is amazing and something that they have worked so hard for and deserve. 💜

I think that's what makes BTS' recent contract renegotiations, and BigHit giving each member a significant number of shares in the company, such an important step... hopefully in the right direction. A company like BigHit can't help but realize that a group of artists single handedly changed the trajectory of their entire company, and it forces them to acknowledge their artists in a different way. They aren't perfect, they're still a company who's survival is dependent on having a consistent revenue stream, but they must be doing something right for a group like BTS to choose to re-sign with them. Hopefully, the financial successes they've achieved while treating their artists better than most companies will act as motivation for other companies in the future.... Also, if I never write the word company again it will be too soon. OOF!

Companies are created ,like big hit not only to entertain us but also to compete with others. Its a market where the first get more than others. Im not saying that bts are not treated properly. But, the reason for what they are doing is to make the business successful. They can say love yourself, sing for those dead children who were in the boat, ect... but is it really to give a powerful message only? Or they strategically did it to touch the heart of many, get a lot of attention then gain more money?. Bts dont even have break, why do they have to be filmed everywhere?? In their vacancy, when they went to europe? Its to get more attention, to make people look for them, hunt them, to know that they were, in this restaurant, to know xyz and then get the revenue from it.

They were the only active group BigHit had, so their financial success was entirely invested in BTS. They had to treat them well to be successful, because they didn't have any other artists to fall back on. Now they're so big that the company still can't afford to lose them, so the continue to treat them fairly well by comparison to other companies. Also, the cameras on them during their vacation weren't talking about the company filming them. It was saying that even when they go on vacation strangers film them, follow them, etc. They didn't share where they were going, they didn't post about where they were. They tried to have quiet vacations, and some were actually successful. Others were found anyway and filmed without their consent. And yes, they do their jobs in a way that makes them money (both company and artists). That's what a job is. Most of us wouldn't be doing the jobs we do if we weren't getting paid for it. Besides, BTS has always sung about what they feel is close to their heart and mind, it's not that they started to write about self confidence/love just now, they debuted having members in the songs credits and, in fact, when they started to release more shallow-ish songs it's when they got more attention from the public.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE ROSE:
The Rose is a pop-rock band that consists of four members: (from left to right 15:20) Dojoon, Woosung, Jaehyeong, and Hajoon. The group was formed under J&Star Ent. and they debuted on August 3, 2017 with their single “Sorry”. They decide to terminate their contract in February 2020, after not being paid since debut. It is honestly really sad how they were so overworked yet they weren’t paid a cent for their talent. I truly hope they are able to release new music as soon as they can because they’re very very talented. Please check out Black Rose, it is a very touching song they made for their fandom as they were in the process of leaving their agency. I’m not sure how the legal process is going but as far as I know they aren’t disbanding. Although I do know that one of the members left to do mandatory military service on the 6th of July. They need all the support they can get so I hope anyone reading this will consider supporting them!!! #WeStandWithTheRose #BlackRose

Yes please support them and give Black Rose a listen on youtube!!! It's almost at 1M views now #WeStandWithTheRose #BlackRose
Unfortunately they were actually unable to terminate their contract as they lost the lawsuit against the company, despite all the evidence/paper trails they had, which honestly is not surprising given the way things work with ent. companies and lawsuits over there.
Black Rose was taken down from all music streaming sites except their own youtube channel and they are stuck under contract with J&Star Ent. for now.
"Apparently" the the company wants to come to an "amicable" agreement with the band. In the meantime, they were only able to get by by busking and now all the members except Woosung have either already enlisted (Dojoon in July and Hajoon in October) or probably will soon (as Jaehyeong is only few months younger). Woosung/Sammy is American so I believe he doesn't have to but he can't really do anything else while he's stuck in the company.
Hopefully with enough support they will be able to return to making music one day when they finally manage to return once their contract is ended ❤️

I see it in Jihyo’s eyes every. single. time. she does her job. I cant see EVERYTHING she’s sacrificed, everything she’s been through. I truly believe she is the strongest woman in kpop. Then you think about how people have been commenting on her weight and appearance for years. I know we joke about Jihyo’s dancing like “Damn Jihyo rent is not due tomorrow,” but she dances with so much energy and passion because it’s what she lives for. It’s what she was made to do and what she’s been preparing for for her entire life. The years she had to herself weren’t many: 8 years total, she’s 23. Her childhood wasn’t long and being in the industry for so long, she grew up so fast and had to be accustomed to the hate. She is such a strong woman and I wish more people appreciated our leader because she’s also a role model to the group. The respect they hold for her is insurmountable and she will ALWAYS remain my bias.

Kpop idols go through so much.
They try not show their bad sides.
They try to perfect something that's already perfect.
They work so hard making themselves hurt to make another person happy.
    They cry. THEY. ARE. HUMANS.
They go through so much hate that they do not deserve.
Some idols don't even get paid. The Rose for example that band I LOVE THAT BAND and when I found out that they hadn't been paid I was very very angry.
Kpop idols also go through a tough time with their parents not supporting them at all.
Suga for example he didn't receive support and when he saw his parents at a concert he had got down and cried.
    These idols starve themselves.
It's not all smiles and happiness.
It's stress. Worried. Scared. Frustrated. Angry. And hurt also.
This is why fans TRUE FANS care and are very overprotective sometimes for their idols because they don't want their idols to go through any more.
Hope people would see and know everything about kpop.

I’m so thankful for Big Hit because although they are not perfect- at least they have some humanity in them.
Being an Idol trainee is expensive, you have to pay the company back once you debut which would take years. If you don’t debut, you just wasted a lot of money. It takes Idols months and sometimes years to pay back the company.
Big Hit surprised me when I found out they do it for free. Big hit Trainees don’t have to worry about paying back bc the company doesn’t ask them to.
From the data I’ve seen Big Hit and YG are the best paying companies. The data included how these companies distribute the money the group earns. Which is why YG Idols are known to be rich like GD and blackpink etc.
Bang PD also talks to the group especially the leader to see what’s in their mind and etc. Which is why BTS are closer to him and TXT are so grateful to him. He definitely isn’t perfect, but he knows that these idols work hard, hence why he started Big Hit in the first place. Music and Artist for Healing that targets the wellbeing of both fans and idols.
Have you ever wondered why BTS and TXT are given concepts that make them so human and not “God” like?

The thing is though, in Korea, artists don’t blow up very much without a company. Issues are even worse than the video says. At least three artists have commit suicide in the past two years in KPoP. Many artists collapse on stage or collapse right after coming off. BTS comes off stage and they collapse, needing oxygen and fanned. Small Injuries and accidents are treated like one would a car accident here in the US. Many artists overwork (BTS was working 12-16 hours a day) and go on unhealthy diets (Jimin). Luckily, some of the agencies are really great. BigHit CEO BangPD cares for BTS like they are his children. He wants them to do well but to do well healthily. BigHit artists are taken care of even if they work themselves into exhaustion (personal drive to do exceptional exacerbates already tiring circumstances) and BigHit also has adopted a zero tolerance for people spreading malicious rumors and misinformation about the groups and take all seriously, meeting it with legal action, no matter how old you are. Not many companies do this though. Especially the big companies.

The longer you are a K-pop fan, the worse it becomes in your eyes. But thankfully, since K-pop has been getting so much attention in the last 5 years or so, things have gotten immensely more ethical. With everything being shared so quickly, companies have to be more careful and actually think about their artist. Hopefully, things will continue to move into the right direction.

When I became a fan 7 years ago, how I interpreted the darkside of Kpop and how fans think is that these people we love so much are not Celebrities, but Idols. Idol's that have to be perfect in everything, flawless in their appearance, put onto pedestals for people to obsess over and worship, with a public private life and ultimately not for themselves, but for us. The last part also applies to their dating life. Having an idol dating would ruin their perfect 'Idol' image, but it is because of this preconcieved notion of what an idol is meant to be, dating illicits a strong reaction from fans that look upon it in disdain. It's very sad to think that idols will never truly be happy in that regard until we get rid of the idea of 'The Perfect Kpop Idol' standard

  • @shamkand
    @shamkand 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Well first I wanted to mention that the idea that someone starts to be a trainee from a young age it's not a big deal, I mean any person that wants to be an athlete (in any sports), or that paly instruments, singers and dancers they all start from young ages if they want to reach the highest performance. Their life revolves around their art, and they can't take long breaks because they will become worst at what they do, in order to keep your level and become better you can't stop. I remembered when all the children around me were on holiday or vacation I was not because I had training 4-6-8 hours a day (depending), no summer vacation no nothing... and from when I was 8 I moved to another town alone living at boarding school because it was the place where the gymnasts that were training for the Olympics trained, and it was the place where the best of the best were. Being a k-pop star is no different, they train from a young age to get where they are and they have to sacrifice a lot to get there.
As for the contracts... they are strict depending on the company, their original format the old type of contracts and training were taken after the Japanese idol program, but lately, the Korean companies became better and more understanding. The contracts are work contracts and they require the artist to be strict with themselves in order to keep them in check ( we saw American kid/teen stars getting famous and money and rolling off the deep end), some forbid idols to date for the first period of time of the contract and some forbid them to date until they reach a certain age, but since it's a serious contract they have to respect the rules. The Kpop industry is not the only one overworking their people all Asian companies are no matter the country, they have a huge culture of work and they tend to overdo it, that is why a lot of people die annually of exhaustion, or you can see people just sleeping on the streets, trains and other public places because they are exhausted this is a culture thing, not a Kpop thing.

  • @MaEun1
    @MaEun1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Yeah being a kpop idol aint easy man.
Speaking of dangers, another somewhat relevant (at least for you Justin) topic of dangers kpop idols is likely to experience in the future is - vocal decay. A topic which, sadly, is very much ignored. The majority of korean entertainment companies doesn't teach/prioritize vocal technique for their trainees/kpop idols. As a matter of fact, a good part of those companies even motivate/force the idols to choose and use damaging styles/uniqueness over the healthier ways to approach singing.
I've been following kpop for almost a decade now and I can't say I haven't witnessed a lot of idols regress vocally over the years. I've witnessed idols that sang better in their pre-debut days compared to their after-debut days. I've also witnessed idols, who've stated so themselves how the vocal trainers at their label made and some has even forced them sing worse. Some of those idols even went out of their way to find new vocal coaches that weren't connected to their company (e.g. Suhyun from AKMU).
You could argue with the fact that some idols are just too busy, but if they really want to, they can do it can't they? Especially those who's already made it big. The problem is the majority of kpop idols don't really know what really involves into getting good at singing. I can only imagine how some of the big kpop vocalists we know of atm will sound in the future if they continue this way:(
That doesn't mean the entire kpop industry is doomed. I've seen groups like Mamamoo, most of the vocalists in SM entertainment, and a few individuals (mainly main vocalists like Eunji, Yuju etc) from other smaller companies that knows and manages to prioritize their vocals.
Ouff I ranted too much, but I just wanted to shed some light on this esp since you're a vocal coach and all. The SK entertainment industry seriously needs more vocal coaches like you Justin :.) btw there's a whole thread on this on reddit called 'Vocal training in Kpop' if you're interested.
*_*Lastly, uh, could you check out the band ONEWE?*_*
It's the brother group of ONEUS. I got quite invested into ONEWE because of their main vocalist Yonghoon. Yonghoon got invited into the band by the drummer after they met in a kpop contest Yonghoon was competing in (and ended up winning lmao), and the rest were playing as a session band for. He's got a quite dark tone for a main vocalist in kpop (I've been speculating on how he's maybe a lyric baritone), but the best of all **his technique is top tier.**
They're severly underrated, but I hope it doesn't stop you from reacting to them. I highly recommend watching at least their song 'Regulus' if you're only watching one song. 'Regulus' showcases Yonghoon's vocals and range, as well as the quality of the band the best:) For a live singing video I recommend their song 'Parting', the Vocals Only Live from 1TheK or the Acoustic Ver. on their channel.
If you came this far, thanks for reading my ridicuously long comment. Keep up the good work! :.)

THIS!!! I also hate that some fans forget the fact some of our idols don’t get proper treatment regarding their vocals, there is this one group but I ain’t gonna say who lol, even though their company is already big, they had improvements but some members got worse overtime which makes me sad... and sometimes when they release songs, some members have to sing out of their comfortable range which also kinda bothers me but I don’t know why some fans don’t see it, I hope fans will take it seriously how there is a chance our favorite singers could lose their voice in maybe 2-3 years

    • @MaEun1
      @MaEun1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ro-qo2ht Yes I totally agree. Though, I would say ever since the topic of K-pop vocals has come to light the past few years theres a lot more fans today that knows about this topic, but chooses to turn a blind eye to it. Even when their favorite K-pop idol notice it themselves, and is quite clear of/frustrated with their lack in vocal delivery, those fans brush it under the rug and resorts to comments like how perfect they already are and how they don't need to do anything. Not properly taking their idols concerns into account.
Losing their voice in 2-3 years is maybe a bit of an exaggeration xD Something more likely is the probability of regression to the point they can't hit certain notes as well as they did before.
The moment when the idol sings their iconic songs and struggles to the point that they mess it up is probably the most heartbreaking thing that can happen for both the artist and the fan.:(

The Rose, I think they left their label by now (I don't know the whole thing so...) and 2 out of 4 members are enlisted now. So I think in 2 years they will either go independent or sign into another agency and then we'll get to enjoy their music again for sure. I think BTS is really lucky with Bighit, I mean, they are not perfect as a company, but they are not the worst either, otherwise they wouldn't have signed another 7 years.

    • @seashell1602

Unfortunately no the Rose wasn't able to leave their company despite trying to, the company won the lawsuit so they weren't able to break the contract. Fingers crossed they manage to come to an agreement with the company to leave before their enlistments are up so that they still have a chance to make music freely. In the meantime, the only thing we can do is support them and stream their independent song Black Rose on youtube (as it was taken down everywhere else) and keep promoting them on social media even while they're not active.

While it’s true that in western countries it’s easier now to be an independent artist, it doesn’t really hold true when it comes to Korea. Large companies have a huge amount of influence, enough that they are able to suppress independent and smaller agency idols/artists. The Korean music market is so saturated that independent singers with no money or influential connections have almost no chance of making it in the industry.

For us it seems nothing or what, but for them it's their dream, it's their life. So please, DON'T JUST HATE ON IDOLS (AND LITERALLY JUST EVERYONE!!!) WITHOUT REASONS. spread LOVE, not hate. Peace!

The points made in this video are very true... but there are exceptions. Like bighit (bts agency) doesn't have all these strict rules and i think that's also part of the reason why bts is so famous. They can have gfs but just won't reveal it publicly and they get paid well too in fact all the members have bought shares from the company and so they are partly the owners of the company themselves now. I do think they work too hard but the members themselves have said they do it as music is their passion and they can't live without working on music. And i am also glad now bts' bodyguards are not afraid of pushing the hell out of saesang fans when they try to get close to them. They also sue ppl when antis start spreading fake rumors about bts. I just hope they start suing internationally too. But yh becoming idols is really stressful.

Lala I'm so sorry you have been through what you have. Im glad you are not in a contract (or at least a better oner?)
Its very sad that this is a major part of their reality. I know you said that they don't need a agency but I think the music culture in Korea would be next to impossible. Other companies will pay to make shows and magazines to only put their artist in the spot light. Also want to mention that I feel there are more companies coming up that treat their artist better such as BigHit, PNation, and ZB. PNation even signed a couple that was kicked out of their previous company because they were dating.
