For decades, Japanese game devs as well as animators have struggled with the 2D to 3D transition. As Western games lead the technology with photorealistic 3D rendering, anime style 3D CGI have always felt unnatural. For years, we either get "Final Fantasy" type of half-realistic half-cartoonish character representation, or plastic-looking characters with anime eyes pasted on their face. Mihoyo is the one who truely mastered the cell-shading technique in 3D and turned anime characters and the 3D environment into one coherent artistic style.

I think my favorite thing about Genshin's world is the sheer scale. You can stand on the massive statue in Mondstadt, look across the water, and see the glow of the Narukami shrine in Inazuma. Being able to look across the map of a vast world makes it feel like a real place, and you can imagine the people standing there on the other side of it, just living their lives. Very rarely do I experience visible draw-distance, where things pop in and out of view as they load in, because the world is designed in a way to mask that effect, giving the illusion of a totally cohesive world.

Enjoy your journey! Genshin Impact is like a roadtrip that contains probably the most gorgeous scenery for how much it is worth.
Then you get to the point where the road abruptly ends as there is no endgame content, but considering how much front end stuff there is (At least 3 90% full nations, with another 70% complete nation on the way), you really would not have to worry about much when starting now.

Another thing that makes Genshin's landscape beautiful is the music. The music composition really fits the vibe of each of Genshin's landmarks, and you even get to hear the instruments each region was inspired from. When you're at Wangshu Inn, the music makes you feel safe. When you're underground in the chasm, especially when really deep, the music gives you sense of despair and danger. Speaking of the chasm, the surface music there is beautiful. I remember when "wandering clouds" started and I couldn't help but just gaze out into the chasm and listen to the music.

Such a shame that the majority of the loud side of the playerbase just ignores all of this to justify their anger with the game and claim the devs are "lazy" just because they aren't making the game the exact way they personally want it to be made, when it's very obvious the developers are anything but lazy when it comes to the effort they put into artistically designing their game.

The thing is, it's...complicated. Artistically speaking, Genshin Impact is amazing. In terms of game-design, it is lackluster, as in, there are very good things, and then there are very bad things, and the bad things come from...the horrid monetization.
The way I see it, there is a disconnect between the creative aspect and the functionnality. It's the eternal question of Design over Practicality. A beautiful chair that is impractical to use as a chair is still beautiful...but is it a chair still? Genshin Impact is a beautiful gacha, but a lackluster videogame.
And all the artists, musicians, designers, and other people that are making the game, that are getting paid to make the game, they deserve their salary. But it would be foolish to think that they are receiving an amount of money proportional the their work. In other words, Hoyoverse employee deserve their salaires, but Genshin Impact doesn't deserve all the money its making, most of it coming from the manipulative and predatory monetization.
But in the end, it is what it is. You gotta enjoy Genshin Impact for what it is, not for what it could be (asking for better monetization and more content will always be fair game, imho.)

      @RandomGirl119 2 ปีที่แล้ว +591

Trust me, the developers put way more attention to detail, research, and passion into this game than is necessary for a gacha game.
Every playable character has their own backstory that you can learn about, even if they're not connected to the main story of the game or don't appear in the main story. For example, so far, the character Fischl has not appeared outside of limited time events, yet she has her own backstory that explains her personality and even her gameplay. Her real name is Amy, and she is simply cosplaying and playing pretend as the protagonist from her favorite book series, Flowers for Princess Fischl, as a way of coping with things from her childhood. We can actually buy and read the first book from the series from a shop in Inazuma.
There are NPCs that have their own little stories and lives, despite not being involved in any quests. For example, in Liyue Harbor, the daughter of a rich family faked her death so she could be with her beloved because her father disapproved of him for being poor. She put a corpse in the water supply so that it could eventually be discovered when it was too decayed to prove it wasn't her. Her father, whose businesses were already on the decline due to diplomats and agents from another nation worming their way into Liyue's economy, ended up having to sell his beloved bank to pay for her funeral. Though, if you talk to him, he really seems more concerned about losing his fortune than losing his daughter.
Even the music in this game and its Character Demo trailers has intense attention to detail. Inazuma has multiple music tracks with influences from the Japanese traditional folk song Sakura Sakura, and it is heavily connected to the Electro Archon's theme music, reflecting both her intention to force Inazuma to keep to tradition and remain unchanging, as well as her influence throughout Inazuma as its Shogun. Albedo's Character Demo makes heavy use of synthetic instrumentation, reflecting the fact that Albedo is a homunculus, a synthetic human.
They even find ways to make gameplay mechanics connect to the lore and worldbuilding of the game so that they can be explained in-universe. For example, the domains that are dungeon-like, have a checkpoint system called the Door of Resurrection. There's a loading screen that explains that Doors of Resurrection work the way they do because they're connected to the ley lines, which are basically a mysterious network of roots capable of various mystical effects.

Even though there were only npc quests in enka, its by far one of my favourite regions. It's completely different from the sunny, green, beautiful landscapes of mondstadt where you first start out. Genshins ability to set the mood through the environment design and music is one reason i like it so much. Just saying that genshin makes certain places feel so original to themselves, just like real life. Each area in the game has its own vibe and own set of auras, its just fascinating.

Even though Genshin is still, at its core, a gacha game funded by gambling, it's the only game that arguably earns the right to use this strategy. The pre-launch development took over two years and a hundred million dollars, which *already* put it quite high on the list of most expensive games to produce, with around 80% of the game still years away from completion. Other games in this price range are mostly AAA FPSes and/or sequels to established brands. Genshin only got started because Honkai made preposterous amounts of money, and the company decided to risk it on an ambitious experiment; it's hard to imagine it getting funded in a more traditional way.
And, well, they certainly didn't short-change the artistic side of the budget. They do ads and sponsorships, obviously, but it's almost not necessary since the game's obvious visual appeal and unique style created a critical mass of fans almost immediately. It probably gains more players from word-of-mouth than actual marketing. All they have to do now is keep the train rolling until the end, however long that takes.

Even in real life crime happens every day everywhere but that doesn't stop me from loving the country I live in, yea the government kinda suck and kinda corrupt but that's just human. Trying to protest and hopefully improve the situation is a good thing but only looking at the terrible thing in life make you miserable
Oh and you cannot ignore the fact that F2P games be it MMO with P2W mechanics or gacha games with the gambling system is basically a tax for the rich and those that cannot control themselves. How many players do you think have enjoyed this game that cost about half a billion dollars to develop for the past 4 years by hundreds, if not thousands without spending a dime and being able to experience the vast majority of the game? The world, the story, and the music all are free to play and experience, the character cost a fortune to get without luck or a lot of grinds but so what? Honestly, that is trivial in comparison to what people can get out of it.
AAA games cost 60 USD excluding DLC and microtransaction, heck some games cost 70$ nowadays and still have DLC and MTX, if you can't pay you can't play and even if you pay for the base game you still need to pay more to experience everything there is to offer. I'm not saying Gacha system is alright but nothing is.
I'm not defending Genshin, it has a lot of flaws and demanding for improvement is never a bad thing but being negative for negative sake is foolish

Finally, a content creator who understands the real references and the amount of effort hoyoverse puts into their game (especially when it comes to region and character design, which was what pulled me into the game in the first place). Genshin is by no means a perfect, inclusive and representative game, as most games are. But they are making great strides in that direction by having so many regions inspired by real places and cultures. The Sumeru controversy made my head hurt because so many critics made it seem like the company did not care about the countries and cultures Sumeru is supposedly based off when the full region and character roster have not even been unveiled yet. From their track record, I would say that I have high hopes for hoyoverse because they do A LOT of research for their regions and characters. While aesthetics sometimes do trump cultural references in their work, they have never been disrespectful towards any culture they took inspiration from.

I also like the effect when we step on grass / bushes, it looks like they move but it's actually a smooth distorsion effect i guess ? I don't think it's related to the Transform variables, it looks different from other games. Really clean though.

Genshin is ultimately more of an adventure game than an action game which is reflected by its more thought-out art and animations. As an artist, I personally prefer genshin's slower combat system more than high octane action games like honkai. You can feel gravity and weight working when controlling the characters even when the animations are exaggerated. It feels like the perfect balance between realistic movements and anime-like action. Plus, I enjoy just walking around places to listen to the music and to enjoy the scenery.

We all love to dunk on Genshin, and it has its flaws.
But in the end, it's a good game. The developers put a lot of thoughts into each nation, into the characters, into the environment... You can see that especially in how much lore is contained in even artifact sets for example.
It's a big, beautiful, immersive world, with lovable characters, a great story (the dialogue might be a bit wonky at times but the underlying narrative is impressively well done), and a great elemental fighting mechanic.
    It's a strong game.
And I just recently noticed this a lot more. Because in the end, even if it has the stupid daily login system, and the evil gacha stuff... It's good. And that's why we're playing it.

You wonder just how big the world is for these massive structures and caves to even exist. Not to mention how the music shifts dynamically when in and out of battle, the places in the chasm, the characters and side quests. I love how much personality the stranded fatui have in the chasm, as well as the tragedy that is their entrapment when the fatui and qixin cut ties, leaving them without any means to get information and assistance. Me: I'm just here to look at my character running from behind.

Another thing I always liked about the designs was the Animal design/stylization. All the animals and critters look super cool and/or cute. Top tier appeal. :D
(The dogs are such good puppers that it’s an actual crime that Mihoyo won’t let us pet them ;-; )
The enemy design is also really cool. The Pyro and Cyro Resgisvines come to mind. For a long time I thought they were just palette swaps of each other (usually because I was too busy murdering them), but they’re not, they embody their element in their petal shapes and effects. Idk, I just think it’s neat.
Also, Special shoutout to my gal Cloud Retainer (and all the adepti tbh) for being so pretty and being the best adepti (sorry Xiao and Ganyu, bird mom ftw)
(My only gripe with the video is you sometimes showed footage that was a completely different region or characters than what the narration was saying. It did flow very smoothly from a video editing stand point so congratz, but you still showed a very clearly Inazuman place and character (love you Yoimiya

Simplicity in harmony with complexity always takes my breath away, World Flipper is an example, the immersion is so deep with storyline so simple and emotion so heartfelt in addition to great illustrations, clean ui and music, it is my kind of perfection.

2 years in and its fanbase is oddly still strong. You’d think it’d fall off by now, but there must be something about this game that has its grip on the fans. So much, it won players choice at TGA 2022 lol. I’d give it a couple of years so the crowd of people hating or overhyping this game dies down.

It's a good game. You can get well over a hundred hours out of it without paying a single penny.

I've never played this game myself. My own "wow" game is Witcher 3.
But my two youngest kids are huge fans and players of Genshin Impact.

Lovely video. I enjoyed the comparisons to real life inspirations for the locations and the research into the dev techniques for achieving the graphical style.
