  • We chase a cow that got out down the road to try to get her back, as she's a long way from home.

The cows always know how to get out, but they can never find their way back.

We had a great Australian Blue Heeler. Since she was a pup, she had the instinct to herd our cows. She did not chase them is she was bored like other people's dogs. Heck, we could leave gates open when we had to go through our pasture for wagons & such. The cows could walk up to the "line", but not dare cross. When the neighbors had young stock or steers get out, they would call and we would bring our dogs. She was so smart, she would know where they broke out and herd them through. We never had to do anything with them! I has been 20 years and we miss them very much!

My brother and i were talking around a fire with friends one night when we heard some cracking in the bushes in front of our house;it was my farmer friend s young cows who escaped their pasture.I called my friend ,he came and we helped him bring the cows to their pasture...Turns out it was some young cross-country motorcyclists who cut the barbed wires of the pasture to go trough;my friend knew it and he brought some tools to repair it.He also electrified the barbed wire after that to prevent it from cutting again!

Had a neighbors set of cows get out of the pasture they were in and all of them somehow ended up by our house, we had pens they could be put in for the time being till they could load them in trailers, except for the bull that was with them. Started getting ready to help search for the bull but got a call from the sheriffs office saying one was down the road in the opposite direction from our house and it was there’s. It wasn’t uncommon in the past for us to get calls about cattle being out from the sheriffs office as we know everyone around that would have cattle in our area if any are out.

Have you checked moisture of beans other then crunch test? Never seen too many guys worry about the date their going to start like you guys do. Run the crops when they're fit, one bad storm and your beans are knocked out of the shell and end up on the ground.... No crop then!!

  • @lukestrawwalker

Sounds like she's become a fence breaker or fence jumper... time to go down the road IMHO... We've had them before and if it's a nice cow you hate to get rid of them, but the problem is, THEY NEVER STOP... once they get a "taste" for getting out and don't respect the fence anymore, they'll just KEEP DOING IT, and what's worse, THEY TEACH OTHERS TO DO IT, TOO.
We've dealt with it enough over the years that basically if a cow breaks out twice, second time we get her back she's gone to the sale barn... just not worth the hassle.
    Later! OL J R :)
