      Dude is incredible. He was valedictorian in high school, too. He once said in the 90s when they were blowing up that when he turned 40 he’d rather be teaching biology than be in a band. I don’t think that ever stuck but what a freaking rockstar - literally and figuratively!

      To me, that is the real sad part of it. If having the basic necessities of life means you've won the lottery, you're not living in a functional society. This song I think is about growing up and realizing the world isn't as bright as you thought it was when you were a kid, a loss of innocence.

    • @luketufts6827
      @luketufts6827 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Necromorbus89 ‘lottery’ isn’t really the right word, since that’s extremely rare.. the point is that most people have this stuff and take it for granted. Anyways, I think you’re right about the message of the song. Most kids nowadays have big dreams, but statistically they can’t all be astronauts and baseball players- lots of people have terrible things happen to them, and most kids don’t have the skills or strength of character to achieve their goals.

      I want to be a film director. I was immersed in stories since I can remember, was 16 when I decided I want to tell stories (novels, movies, whatever) for living.
      Now I'm 23 and I have a bachelor's degree in film studies, working on my fourth short film and daydreaming about where I'm going to be in 10 years but man...I am nowhere near where I wanted to be at this age. There are people younger and more talented than me, people who already make their big leap into feature filmmaking while I didn't even got to see America yet (Born in Europe). I work two part time jobs while studying master's degree full time and in my free time I'm writing, editing and watch as many movies analytically as possible. But I still feel like a worthless piece of shit with no future or talent.
      I feel like this song is speaking right to my soul. I'm happy for having the roof over my head and food to feed myself but...that's not what I want. I want to be remembered when I die for my movies and books. I don't care about money. I care about leaving a message behind. This horrible fear of being forgotten once you die is driving me maybe even more than the love for movies itself

      I'm sorry you had to go through that. I'm in my early 30's and i'm really conflicted about my life since I got out of high school. I never had the rights of passage that most kids had. Like doing crazy crap in their teen years, doing drugs, losing your virginity way before your friends, skating around your neighborhood, pissing off your neighbors, etc. Because of me NOT experiencing those things that are kind of a right of passage in your teens, I have felt angry, betrayed, hateful towards the world, and bored for a very long time. But the people I went to school with that did experience those things in their teens have struggled with drug addiction, std's, getting a girl pregnant by accident, jail time, etc and I feel bad for them. I just wish I could back and do it all over again...to try and change things...get to experience things I didn't get to experience...and hopefully change the way things turned out for myself and other people.

    • @georgemanize
      @georgemanize 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce Couldn't have said it better myself and I'm 25. This overwhelming feeling of nostalgia for things you didn't even experience is really something. For example, I listen to punk songs and I'm being nostalgic about skating in some California coastal suburb being chased by angry neighbours and then chilling with my friends drinking beer or hanging out with a girl during the sunset. Even though nothing like that ever happened and I'm actually from Europe... Also that dead inside feeling is really fucked up, when you have no sense of self and no emotions you are like a zombie, just a piece of meat walking through daily life, while everything around you seems chaotic and doesn't make sense. Funny thing is that I don't really care anymore about that either.

    • @Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce
      @Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@georgemanize Damn, thank you for sharing that. I can't imagine what growing up as a teen in Europe would be like (but specifically English speaking countries in Europe). I used to know a girl online from England and we talked all the time when I was younger, but sadly we drifted apart and now I can barely remember her name. I'm an American at heart but sometimes I wonder how I would do living in England. I like british culture to some extent and a lot of places in England are gorgeous (I mainly mean the countryside, stuff away from the big cities). I love medieval stuff so it would be awesome to visit some castles in England. But I know that over the last 10+ years England has been dealing with a lot of bs that seems to have made a much less nice place to live in (especially in the big cities like London).

    • @georgemanize
      @georgemanize 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce Probably not the right place to start a conversation but here goes. I'm from Greece and growing up here had some similarities with American culture but overall Balkan culture is quite different. As for myself growing up, I always felt like an American at heart because American things shaped up my childhood like movies, video games, music etc. Btw since you mentioned castles, I'm also a big fun of Medieval stuff, I love playing fantasy games and listening to power metal with fantasy inspired lyrics. Btw listening to this kind of music makes me feel nostalgic about watching LotR on the cinema or pulling all nighters playing WoW and drinking energy drinks. I never experienced any of that but damn, I wish I had. Finally, it's funny that you mentioned that you were talking to an English girl online because I was also talking to a Polish girl online. Those attempts back in the day to communicate with women were really something...If I were to read those messages again, I would probably die of cringe. Well, I'm down to find out if the old internet myth about becoming a mage if you reach 30 and are still a virgin is true, so it doesn't really matter.

    Every gen goes through this. This came out in 1998. I was 20 and everything he was singing was happening. The song was surreal, the opioid crisis had started and friends were dying, all the " go to college you'll get a good job" was bull shit, the factories that employed so many people were closing, the recession was sneaking up.

    I had an experience in high school, when I graduated I had a friend of mine come to me and thank me. When I asked why they said that when they called me at like four in the morning some months ago, the conversation we has stopped them from committing suicide. It really opened my eyes. That simple phone call that at the time I thought of as weird saved a life. That's why now I can never not help someone I think needs a shoulder to cry on or an ear to talk to.

      When things were at their very worst:
      2 Suns, Cross in the sky, 2 comets will collide = don`t be afraid - repent, accept Lord`s Hand of Mercy.
      The first sign - the Earth will spin faster.
      The second sign concerns the sun, which will loom larger, brighter and begin to spin.
      Scientists will say it was a global illusion.
      Beaware - Jesus will never walk in flesh again.
      After WW3 - rise of the “ man of peace“ from the East = Antichrist - the most powerful, popular, charismatic and influential leader of all time. Many miracles will be attributed to him. He will imitate Jesus in every conceivable way.
      Don`t trust „pope“ Francis = the False Prophet
      - will seem to rise from the dead
      - will unite all Christian Churches and all Religions as one.
      One World Religion = the seat of the Antichrist.
      Benedict XVI is the last true pope - will be accused of a crime of which he is totally innocent.
      - banking collapse was deliberately masterminded by the Antichrist
      - Antichrist will step in and create a false peace in the state of Israel by joining them with palestine in an unlikely alliance.
      - „He will recite extracts from My Teachings, which he will passionately proclaim from every secular stage in the world, until people sit up and take notice of him.“

    They have another song called “Gone Away” that also carries a Heart-Heavy message. I was very over critical of this band when I was a teenager, but as I’ve grown older, I have come to love their unique sound and appreciate the message in their music no matter what emotion they are putting out there.

      I am so over FFDP covers at this point. Don’t get me wrong, I actually like the band a lot despite them having a frat boy rock reputation, but their covers irk the shit out of me. The songs they cover aren’t old enough to warrant it, I guess? Like I’d rather just listen to the original because when I was growing up it was new enough to get a lot of radio time, but now stations only play the FFDP version of the song. Specially calling out that god awful Blue on Black cover that just shouldn’t exist, but it applies to a Gone Away cover too. Haven’t heard it, but I really don’t have high hopes.

      @ivybressler1204 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FFDP is such a disappointment (not to be an asshole, but...) They're so technically proficient, but their covers just come off as empty to me. Gone away is a great example- the offsprings original has so much raw emotion, just layers and layers of anger, and hurt, and sadness, regret, just every element of mourning a friend who was gone to suddenly and too soon. But FFDPs version is just one note sad; it doesn't have that pure, almost animalistic, instinctive, rip out your guts, all the feelings all at once heartbreak that the original does.

Yes, when I was young and listened to Linkin Park, the Offspring, Limp Biszkit and was with my friends, we all thought that Life will be perfect and that we will all have great jobs and big families and all of luck we could possibly have. And then the dad of my best friend died from cancer, when my best friend was just 18 and when I by myself had plans to move out from home and get a job and start my own life, my mother had an accident and ended up in a wheelchair. This year she went to hospital just two days before her birthday and when she was recovered really well she got ill and died on the 4th of december. She wanted to be home on christmas and I had so many plans for the future. I wanted to visit rome with her, as soon as it is possible because she loved rome . The Offspring was amazing. The music & message are complete juxtapositions, if you just listen to the music & the arrangements you think it's a straight banger but if you listen to the lyrics it is darker & deeper than you would ever expect.

    The contrast in this song is amazing. The music is catchy as hell and really energetic (I don't think anyone can keep from bobbing their head), but the lyrics are uncomfortably dark. The first time you hear 4:14 onwards, the song just punches you in the face and tells you to listen the fuck up.
    It's a brilliant song, and I never get tired of it no matter how often I listen to it.

    Please make a reaction to a young, very popular singer in world. Videos from this singer collect hundreds of millions of views. Diana Ankudinova is now only 17 years old. She has a very unique, very deep, clear voice.
    Dr. Marc Reynolds (Voice Teacher, Stage Director, Performance Coach and Consultant, and Acting Coach) said about the performance of this girl:
    Really really exceptional! Even if you ignore her age, even is she was 10, 20, 30 years older, this is still a really exceptional performer here that we're seeing. But at her age, unbelievable. Really really exceptional! Absolutely gorgeous! And again, not just because of her voice, because her performing, watching how nuanced and engaging her performance is. Ah, it's just so stunning. • @MrSutekii
    @MrSutekii 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeh this song kind of sums up being a teenager and The Offspring was very much a big part of my teenage years. Being that carefree teenager, hanging out with mates, just looking forward to the weekend, got that 'whole life ahead of me to do whatever I want' vibe. It's all good, we're all gonna be around forever. Then you get older, people go different ways, some people get left behind, some go down dark paths......some people really do go on to do great things but I can really relate to this song in the sense that at the end of my teens I developed agoraphobia and became crippled by anxiety, I spent 5 yrs unable to leave the house and to this day, 17 years later just going to the shops or getting to work is a massive task. I could basically split my life between the before and after.
    If teenage me that was having the time of my life living for alt rock, punk and hanging out on the weekend playing sport or just catching up with mates met the me now I doubt they could ever believe we're the same person.

    When I was a little kid my brother, who is 10 years older than me, made me a mixed cd and this song was on it. Along with a few other offspring songs and 90s punk/rock songs. He has a "not the one" tattoo on the back of his neck and "Nitro" across his arm in huge letters. He and the music he introduced me to shaped me into the person I am today, my brother was and still is my biggest role model. Hearing this song takes me back to sitting in my room, or the car with my cd player playing this song on repeat cause I loved Dexter's voice and the fact my brother liked it too. I plan on getting an Offspring tattoo, not just cause I love them but because it reminds me of my brother and how much he influenced me as a young kid

    Fun fact about the lead singer of the offspring , he has a damn good education Holland was the best student in mathematics in his year, and he found it "just as exciting as punk rock".[3] He then attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a B.S. degree in biology and an M.S. degree in molecular biology, and was enrolled as a candidate for a Ph.D. in molecular biology.[4] After the success of the Offspring, he suspended his studies to focus on music,[3] but successfully resumed and defended his doctoral thesis in 2017

    "You gotta keep 'em separated"
    this is the name of a song I have trouble believing you haven't heard. "Gone away" is also a good song they did which by the way has also been covered by 5 Finger Death Punch. Offspring or The Offspring depending on where you live has always kind of had the style of "happy" up beat music with a dark meaning or just playin silly like "pretty fly (for a white guy)" but a very fun band to crush albums with just because they do so many different things albums by album. The song "self esteem" was one of the first songs I ever heard and it's worth your time to do a reaction to.
