Fran is always a great speaker, but the interviewer keeps trying to make it more about her own recollections. She needs to LISTEN more and not interrupt her guest, Fran Lebowitz!
That's true, but Albert Hujar wasn't - as Fran Lebowitz claims here - a 'Polish' Nazi officer. The sheer phrase (Polish + Nazi officer) could quickly raise a few eyebrows to anyone more or less familiar with the history of this part of Europe. Nazi Germans considered Poles the untermenschen. In order to get into SS you had to prove the 'purity' of your lineage and fulfil a set of strict conditions, which was completely out of reach for non-Germans. Even though it was not entirely unheard of that some Poles became part of SS (whether by will or by force, the estimates speak of several hundred at best), it was very far from a massive movement. For that reason such cases are not very well documented too. By and large, Poles just couldn't, due to the whole ideology behind SS, progress in its ranks as high as to became such 'influential' figure as Albert Hujar because they weren't 'worthy' due to the whole racial hygiene thing and pan-Germanism idea. This is NOT to say that Poles didn't aid in this way or another the extermination of Jews; many of them did. It's also another question that if Polish people had had a chance to make a 'career' in SS, they wouldn't have tried to. Most likely some of them would have. But in terms of historical facts to claim that Alber Hujar was a Polish Nazi officer is unfounded. Considering the spectrum of his crimes, if Albert Hujar had been Polish, it would've been an extremely large and widely discussed historical topic. To be honest, if it weren't Fran Lebowitz I would think the person who said that is woefully ignorant and has a rather vague idea of the whole political/ideological layout at the time because it also kind of implies an equal sign between Germans' and Poles' role. I mean, as if it WAS possible for Polish people to play the same part as Germans did... There's plenty of other things to be infinitely ashamed of though, so either way I guess it doesn't make any difference. I'm not in any way a historian myself, I just did some research after hearing this from Fran Lebowitz as I was somewhat puzzled by what she said, her being such a dazzling intellectual. I wonder about the reasons for this inaccuracy, if it's the source (meaning the book she was reading) that misled her.
