    The VW Microbus used a rear engine for a different reason. You could put storage space above the engine. Also, although it did nothing for cornering, having that engine above the drive wheels could help you out of deep snow when compared to front engine RWD vans. The VW Vanagon was also a rear engine van with storage above the engine, but the engine selection sucked. You could either get a gasoline engine that was prone to all kinds of coolant leaks, or a reliable diesel that took ages to accelerate and created so much smog that it would permanently stain the paint. As a result, people swap better and more modern engines into Vanagons and then enjoy the extra space.
    FWD vans didn't allow people to sit above the engine, and the few mid engine vans were a royal pain to service. The Toyota Previa went extinct early for that reason. Sure, having an impossible to repair van might work in Japan, where most cars are forced to live a short life, but it doesn't work in the USA where people buy a Toyota so they can own it for 10 years or more without paying a fortune in repairs.

    I like to start my own car company and make a simple car that will not brake and last 20 years old school without a lot of technology. Also a small simple truck with 2 doors and a key (no push button start ) no abs and tcs and escif possible . Also sport car with a chassis design to be front mid and rear engine chassis all in one . so you can make you car how you like it . also fwd and rwd and awd if you want . also Na , turbo charge ,supercharger , twincharger and hybrid engine setup with diffent trims. Maybe a boost car with twincharger VVT and a hybrid with nitrous oxide in a production car. IDK if you are able to do that . The Ford Focus did. Can a billionaire help me out or someone it be cool if we did all this

    If front engine front wheel drive is cheap to make, why don’t they just flip it and make it the other way. Smaller trunk in front, engine in the back. Isn’t that basically a rear engine rear wheel drive?

    • @govinlock8568
      @govinlock8568 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because it is more difficult to cool down the rear engine in low-normal speed. Need more advanced cooling system and no extra protection for passengers against front collision.

    • @skylinefever
      @skylinefever 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The front engine, FWD car tends to cost less to make because they can cram the engine, transmission, and final drive into one small unit. Having a rear engine FWD car would have all those parts separate just like a front engine RWD car. The mid or rear engine RWD setup also allowed packing all that in a small unit at a low price, and the VW Beetle and Microbus were good examples. In addition, when the engine is over the drive wheels, it makes getting out of snow easier. VW Beetles were famous for getting out of snow despite having a low price, and that was thanks to the rear engine, RWD configuration. If you placed the engine in the rear and powered the front wheels, you would get stuck as easily as a front engine RWD car in heavy snow. It might even be worse, because as you would accelerate, weight would lift off of the front wheels. You would have most of the downsides of FWD with none of the upsides.

    • @govinlock8568
      @govinlock8568 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@skylinefever He/She asks why most cars don't use rear engine rear wheel drive instead of FWD for cutting the production costs (because RR (rear engine RWD) and FWD has same structure of drivetrain, just flipped back and forth)
      For me, it is because the RR engine are rear heavy, making the front lifted easier and not very stable at straight line. Also the cooling is not as good as front engine with same cost, making long journey is not very plausible with cheap cars. Just look at Tata Nano, which is the RR cheap car that prone to got overheating engine.
      Lastly, the FWD cars have highest interior volume per car size ratio than other layouts without sacrificing the center of gravity. Lower center of gravity means lower possibility to rollover.

    • @skylinefever
      @skylinefever 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@govinlock8568 The cost of cooling systems does explain a lot. The VW Beetle and Microbus were air cooled, so they didn't need all that extra plumbing to install a radiator. That also probably explained why the VW Vanagon was a water cooled money pit.
