    This. This video needs to be the first result for "Treading water for beginners." Learning the vertical float really gives you the confidence that it's really not that much effort and goes a LONG way into keeping calm. Not one other video I saw covered that.

      I would love to learn how to tread water and fully learn to swim once and for all. I have it in my mind (and I'm sure there are other people who are thinking the same thing as me) that treading water WILL PUT PEOPLE AT EASE and have people be more comfortable in water.

    This might appear to simplified for some but my best takeaway is the importance of the breath ... I have not been taught the significance of filling up the lungs with air ... The emphasis is generally on hand and feet motion .... So thanks for this simple explanation and demonstration. I had no idea that breathing technique is just as important in staying vertically afloat. I have really been struggling to master this. I will certainly try filling up my lungs to see if I can do any better. 👍

      Same here... I float effortlessly on my bad and Tommy but still struggling with vertical float... when I try to relax I noticed my feet wouldn't touch the floor yet my head is completely submerged
      Looks like my bone density and muscle mass caused that
      I suppose by the time I had a completely filled lungs 🫁 it should improve it a bit before including the arms and legs movements

      I need to know what does filled up lungs mean? As eventually one breaths out the air and at that point i sink.

    • @okwui04

      Exactly. Threading water is easy if you have 95% buoyancy. Mesomorph body type like me sink like a brick. It takes tremendous amount of effort
      And can only be sustained in mere seconds

    What is the best sculling technique if you have dense muscles and bones and sink like a rock?

    • @adde9506
      @adde9506 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What they didn't say is that treading is very person dependent, every person treads differently. Some extremely differently. In general you want large slow motions. Try sweeping/skulling your arms back and forth just beneath the surface in the longest arc that is comfortable for your shoulders. Try not to lock out your elbows. Treading should be relaxed. Your legs can do any number of things, but try to get away from flutter kick. Options that resemble whip kicks or scissor kicks are most common.

    • @jellyacc
      @jellyacc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adde9506 scissor kicks?

    • @adde9506
      @adde9506 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jellyacc One leg from the front and one leg from the back, starting with bent legs and ending with straight. Very comfortable for swimming on your side. When I tread, one leg scissor kicks and the other whip kicks, it's the one time I don't worry about form at all.

    • @jellyacc
      @jellyacc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adde9506 ah ok. Like the one used in sidestroke. that whip kick/ scissor kick combo is hard to picture tho

    • @adde9506
      @adde9506 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jellyacc That's the one. That combo isn't really something to aspire to. It's just what I do; it suits the mechanics of my body. It just does do a good job of showing that, unlike the strokes, treading doesn't have a precise technique. It's okay if you bob, it's okay if you use a different kick, it's okay if it's more arms than legs, it's okay if it's more legs than arms, it's okay if you drift around: anything goes when it comes to treading. The only thing I really don't recommend is flutter or dolphin kick; for different reasons they both wind up being very tiring to tread with, and the goal of treading is to do it indefinitely.
