    2010's BBC Radio 4 adaption of Goldfinger had a great cast including 'Die Another Day' alumni Toby Stephens [Bond] and Rosamund Pike [with an American accent as Pussy Galore] but also featuring Tom Hollander, Ian Ogilvy. Tim Piggot-Smith [who had small parts in Johnny English and Quantum of Solace] and best of all Ian McKellen as Goldfinger. It's a faithful adaption of Fleming's book so had the whole 'Goldfinger gets Bond to be his secretary' plot line which Goldfinger admits was a stupid idea at the end!

    Pierce Brosnan recently signed up to a new spy movie [Stephen Soderbergh's 'Black Bag'] along side Naomie Harris! [it also is due to feature Cate Blanchette and Micheal Fassbender]. Pierce also has recently endorsed Cillian Murphy and Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Bond rather than advocate for himself to be rehired so that ship [which was always a long shot] has almost certainly sailed.

    • @spencerkindra8822
      @spencerkindra8822 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Was there ever an actual possibility Brosnan was gonna come back? I can't see that ever happening. Connery coming back for DAF was a fluke, one and done thing that only happened because Lazenby quit and OHMSS wasn't well received. Plus it had only been four years since Connery last played Bond while it's been over 20 since Brosnan did Die Another Day.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@spencerkindra8822 I didn't think it would ever happen-particularly as he'd stated 'my time was my time' a few years ago and he's now in his 70's [given Roger at 58 is the oldest Bond] but it was something a lot of fans wanted to see as show by the reaction to Calvin discussing the possibility in 2022 in the sense of 'giving him a better ending' [and echoed by a couple of the comments on the recent Aaron Taylor-Johnson video] in the style of recent legacy sequels [Like 'Star Trek Picard', Top Gun Maverick or Spiderman No Way Home] but I personally feel 'The November Man' from 2014 was pretty much his epilogue already [un-officially] and as you say it would be pretty unprecedented for the series [as would bringing him back as M or another role].

    • @spencerkindra8822
      @spencerkindra8822 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jamesatkinsonja I get fans wanting to see him come back to play Bond and wrap up his tenure properly but that ship has long sailed. Aside from Craig no other Bond got to properly end their Bonds except maybe Connery. OHMSS ends on the single biggest cliff hanger in all 25 movies, DAF doesn't wrap up anything, and both AVTAK and LTK don't have any sense of finality, at least not on the surface. Brosnan just got unlucky that unlike the other five Bonds, he didn't choose when he hung it up.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@spencerkindra8822Very true [although Pierce seems to have made peace with it by now]. I guess back in the day the films were more self contained/in the same continuity unlike now where were used to a beginning and ending for the character/actor but as you say there isn't any real 'loose ends' for Pierce's films [and I suspect it would only be something like Samantha Bond in a cameo for 'returning' supporting cast]. It's similar to how some die hard's still want a 3rd Dalton film when the time for that was in the early to mid-90's, rather than now when he's in his late 70's.

    • @spencerkindra8822
      @spencerkindra8822 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@jamesatkinsonja Dalton coming back is even more of a stretch. Brosnan is 70, Dalton is 78. I think the reason so many fans want a Brosnan legacy sequel is because his tenure was cut short at both ends: he started playing Bond too late and was fired too early.

    The Daily Mail ran an article today 'Next Bond film could be a remake' which felt like 10+ clickbait articles rolled into one-all quoting 'an insider' and little detail [like not saying which film would be remade...], including saying it 'might have old villains back', might involve Denis Villeneuve and Zendaya [from the current massive hit Dune 2] or Sydney Sweeney [current rising star and like Zendaya in 'Euphoria'], might be more like Brosnan's film and hilariously 'they have a haircut in mind for Aaron Taylor-Johnson'!
    'Coincidently', Aaron Taylor-Johnson's wife Sam's next film-the Amy Winehouse biopic 'Back to Black' is out soon. She seemed to admit that the rumours were helpful saying [ tongue in cheek] 'does that mean I'm directing the next Bond!'.

      Did The Mail drop all the posits from their Bond Rumour Dartboard onto a scanner and make an article? If they can't settle on one 'news exclusive' then I think it's fair none of it is news. It could be anything might be the takeaway here. Sam Taylor Johnson could be a decent pick to direct Bond, but I did like her cheeky implication of nepotism getting her the gig.

    Hi Calvin! I'm a CD collector and recently found the soundtrack to this movie called "The Sting" at my local Goodwill. I bought it because it contains a lot of Scott Joplin songs and when I was a kid I played a lot of Scott Joplin when I was first learning the piano and I oddly remember some random old guy mentioning this movie in passing like two decades ago - so I bought it. Upon further inspection, I noticed the man who scored this film was Marvin Hamlisch - the genius who gave us "Bond '77." I also noticed the main antagonist in the film is Robert Shaw - aka Red Grant. Would love to see you review it, as it's James Bond adjacent, and I enjoyed the film and the soundtrack very much. Also, towards the end of the film, they wear tuxedos and it made me think of how great Paul Newman would have been as James Bond.

    I'm sure I remember another Goldfinger review that you did, one where you mentioned the jump scare that you get from the cut between "positively shocking," and the opening bars of the title song (I know you mentioned it in your recent review with David Zaritsky, apologies for spelling, David). The northern accent is quite endearing.
    I love the film, Goldfinger, even the flaws (especially the flaws, you might say). I've never thought about this before, but one change I'd make to the plot is to have the betrayal of the gangsters as part of the Fort Knox scene. The mob turning up in trucks to take the gold but getting gunned down either by the Chinese or Americans. It would also help to explain M's remark to Marc Ange Draco in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, about how he did well out of, "that gold job in '64," some of Draco's men avoiding the fire-fight and making off with some gold in the ensuing confusion.

    You should definitely do an updated, more in depth Goldfinger review. At 18:09 it's funny how you acknowledge how much Doug Walker aka The Nostalgia Critic influenced your old reviews because even though he's hilarious, his jaded attitude doesn't really work for a Bond fan reviewing the Bond movies. Walker is funniest when he's taking the piss out of blockbusters from the 80s and 90s he thinks are overrated. Whereas with you and other pro Bond channels, you actually like the Bond films and don't want to just crap all over them and talk about how much you think they suck haha. That's why, while I enjoyed your old reviews, your recent, more positive ones are way better.

    I’ve always liked Goldfinger. I’d probably say it’s my favourite Bond film, simply because it has all the things you expect from a Bond film and it does them well. It’s iconic, interesting and a really fun time, although I’m starting to wonder if people are beginning to appreciate it less for whatever reason.

    Just a little honourble mention to Dune Part Two currently in cinemas, and Lea Seydoux's performance. She plays a spy, and after her appearance in Bond, its fascinating to see her character at work here. Seydoux of course is French, but here adopts a very effective and wiley English RP accent. Definitely a memorable, commanding and sexy portrayal and while I'd never want James Bond to be played by a woman, I'd love to see a female spy franchise. Tips on how to be do it can be gained from here. Black Widow held promise for this, but spoilers she died. EON'S own The Rhythm Section also sadly barely made anything, after some non-existent marketing and release just before the first Lockdown.

      I certainly think Ilsa from Mission Impossible was a strong enough character for her own spin off film/TV series but had a similar fate to Black Widow [and Cruise wasn't keen on spin offs]. Seydoux had a small part as a villain in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol too. There was a lot of love for Paloma in 'No Time to Die' but unfortunately she turned up in Craig's last film [she'd surely have come back if he'd done another].

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jamesatkinsonja I'd forgotten about Ilsa! Yeah she'd definitely work in her own film. I've read a rumour recently that she may not actually be dead in Dead Reckoning and so may be back in the sequel. Whether this was always planned or is a reaction to fans annoyance at her demise and so quickly. Of course its just a rumour, so I'll take it with a pinch of salt. Yeah I've heard Cruise vetoed a MI spin-off series Paramount Plus wanted to do. But an Ilsa film series would be great and as she usually bumps into Ethan while doing her own mission it'd be plausible to follow what she does off-screen. Cruise can't be playing Ethan for much longer (Dead Reckoning being two parts suggests a finale) so give Rebecca Ferguson her chance.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@davidjames579 Great points [A lot of fans were certainly upset by her being killed off]. Ilsa did feel like the ideal character to take over the franchise if Ethan retired [certainly more than the plan to give it to Jeremy Renner's Brant after Ghost Protocol]. I've not seen it [and apparently it wasn't great] but I did wonder if Netflix's 'Heart of Stone' started life as an Ilsa spin off in the planning given it's from the same studio as MI [Skydance] and was very much pitched as a 'female lead franchise in the vein of MI' when first announced.

    Changing Fleming's plot to radiating the gold just replaces one plot hole with another. What difference does it make if the gold gives off radiation? I'm fairly certain even if the gold changes owner, it doesn't need to travel anywhere

    My biggest issue with Goldfinger was always how once Bond is captured he’s just kinda there until it’s time to fight Oddjob.
    Compared to FRWL or Thunderball where he’s constantly moving around, exploring, and hunting the mission. The movie is still unbelievable and amazing but that’s always been my issue with the movie that prevents me from placing it over the other Connery films (except NSNA) even in Diamonds I got what I love with him out and about

    Fun video. So many of my opinions change over time too.
    For me, the consensus was that Goldfinger was the greatest Bond movie 20 yrs ago. I believed and went along with that. However I've changed my opinion and Goldfinger is around 10th... And 3rd best if the Connery bonds after Russia and thunderball.

    After reviewing this review of the review of Goldfinger 😉I fully endorse a new review of this movie for two reasons; first, ofcourse, of the anniversary and second because this is in my mind still one of the best Bond movies ever made and because of it's 'blueprint' role for all the other Bond's it deserves another fresh look at it.
