This is by FAR Stevie's best performance of this tune, no doubt, all his other version are great, but he was on fire this particular night, FUCKING FIRE.
Exactly they both rock. Stevie's was a lot different because that's how he was. He could change any song he played and make it more unique and different than any other version he's ever played
I don't think I've ever seen anyone put that much feeling and soul into a song. He plays the guitar effortlessly..as though he is just channeling the energy through his hands.
That move he does at 2:57, bringing the body of his guitar up to his own neck, shows how his instrument was absolutely part of his body by this point. A true artist.
well, it's been 18 years since his death, and you gotta give him credit for the kind of life that he had. He was one of the most tallented guitarists and he will always be remembered. R.I.P and vaughn, you'll always be remembered.
SRV is the truth like Jesus walkin on water son.... never really heard his music until this clip, but i sure as shit am impressed with his skills.... AMAZING!!
because he played way better than anyone else, he was in a different league... it was awesome, magic, wonderful whatever you want to call it, almost supernatural no man should play like that
That was by FAR the absolute BEST voodoo chile I have ever seen/heard.... man srv had moments where his guitar playing just sounded unreal... BTW.. " take that Jeff beck " lol.... j/k
Being a big Hendrix fan myself, SRV's embellishments on this classic are amazing. Few guitarists can even touch this song in the feel and tonality...awesome.
Wow! That was fierce. Stevie was on top of game there. SRV and Hendrix had to have been two of the most wickedly talented guitarist to have ever picked up an electric guitar. Amazing talent that guy was.
I would have died if those two were still here playing today! That would have been one site to see! Their up there in heaven rocking it out right now though I bet
I can't believe it's been 18 years. Stevie lived a hard life and thankfully the last 3 and half years of his life were a lot better than the first 34 plus years of his life. Stevie left behind some amazing work and also amazing guitar work that will never be matched again
I read on Wikipedia that he originally wanted to be a drummer, he got the rythm down so good, unlike many guitarist. amazing guitarst and singer too, RIP man
its because they were making him play with thinner strings. He couldn't get the same tone and it was easier to bend. I agree he did change his sound aruond 89 but still he is great.
Love your videos! Hope the move will go well. On a side note, I saw an interview where rene said that stevie was able to get the same tone out of the thinner strings by changing the guitar around a bit, but he didn’t get into specifics. It seems the tone was similar enough for stevie to be okay with it. His sound is different regardless though, probably due to the more jazz inspired playing he was going for near the end of his life? An awkward guess, but it might be something.
@17musicluv He doesn't get into the music. He is the music. It flows through him and out of his hands like water through a stream. A pure channel connected to an uninterupted flow of blues. RIP Stevie,We miss you
I've never seen this clip, but I did get to see him 6 times while he was alive. He played this song like a motherphuqer, when he was in a groove there was never anyone better and there never will be. There's some great players out there; Steve Morse, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, et al, but there will never be another SRV.
the move it puts on that lick at 3:25 just shows how much he felt the music and he was a channel where he wasnt playing music he was truly releasing it from i different place.
i remember when i first started to learn to play rock music my guitar teacher put stevies texas flood im lik wat the hell thats so boring he told me that i could learn so much from this guy, who know i learned so much from watching stevie my playing got so much better n more soul was poure into my playing after listenin to him he's a great player for his power n soul n his guitar playing
Just like how All Along the Watch Tower was improved upon by Hendrix from Dylan's original, SRV took improved on Voodoo Child from Jimi. As a fan of both I just would have loved to see BOTH do this song together, imagining that gives me chills
This version is Voodoo Child, but Stevie pronounced it Chile, so yeah that's why it's printed like that on the back of his CD Couldn't Stand The Weather and it's why most of his performances that are are here say Chile and not Child
Has anyone ever controlled feedback as great as SRV? 5:36 Poor Hendrix. Had the kid lived to be 35 like SRV, maybe, just maybe he could have gotten there.
my god!...those hammer-ons and pull-offs he does at exactly 1:19-1:20 sound so fast and clean...they almost seem sythetic...like digitized...like no human can be making that sound with there fingers and metal strings...UGGG ...my guitar hero man..SRV 4 eva
Should have left the last few seconds of Kurt Loder's comment in, it was a respectful bookend to the performance. I have it on VHS. Kurt said, seriously, "Stevie Ray Vaughan, the way he'll be remembered by fans around the world."
SRV had amazing sense of timing,i bet he could play drums well too the sound he had was incredible, raw and organic. once you have a sweet sound you could play 2 notes and it would sound ace my hero too,and hendrix he was an inovator,he started all of this.lets not forget that. you can keep your vai and satriani,i hate that plastic playing. peace Daz
Stevie always, throughout his career, had his own exclusive tone. I can always make out Stevie's tone, even from a distance among other noises. Funny how it cut's right through it and grabs you. I've never mistaken it for JH's tone though I never got to see SRV live or talk to Rene. Maybe my ears are playing tricks on me?
Rene got him to lower the gauge he was using a bit, but did it in a fashion that did not take away from his tone. I certainly don't hear the difference..
awesome video - im pretty sure thats the same tunic he wore in 83 when he played at the el mocambo.. first time ive noticed him wearing the same thing twice lol
He also played on extremely thick strings, with his tubescreamers and Twin reverb amps. His legendary tone was his thick strings and how he bashed the hell out of the guitar.
@cmc2234 i was at the orthodontists and I heard a song I hadnt heard before on the quiet radio. I immediatley knew it was SRV and was right when the vocals came in
I remember a buddy of mine walking into the my house a few weeks ago while I had this video on and he was floored by what he was hearing and seeing. He's a guitar player and he totally went to work on trying to sound more like Stevie. He called me up a few days ago and told me that he was dumbfounded why he sounded like $hit in comparison to this video. I told him not to worry because guys like Santana are doing the exact same thing, and their failing as well!
You got that right. No offesne to the Kenny fans but he's never brought the same intensity, energy, and style to Voodoo Chile. He just basically tried to play exactly like Stevie. I know Stevie is Kenny's idol but Stevie took Jimi's version and put his own feel on it. Just listen to the differences in the studio version and all of Stevie's live versions. He took the song to a whole different place and still kept the same bad ass feeling that Jimi initially put in the song!
I'm thinking this was filmed by MTV since the rest of this video where Stevie waves to the crowd is used on VH1's Legends program they did a few years ago. So I'm sure it's out there somewhere but I doubt we'll ever see it
This is by FAR Stevie's best performance of this tune, no doubt, all his other version are great, but he was on fire this particular night, FUCKING FIRE.
I agree with Buddy. The way Stevie played.....God have mercy!!!!!
no man should play like that... but stevie owned it. a fucking monster and that is a major understatement
Exactly they both rock. Stevie's was a lot different because that's how he was. He could change any song he played and make it more unique and different than any other version he's ever played
the best verison of srv ive ever herd so far..i love this dude..one if not the best ever
I think this the most badass version of voodoo chile I ever heard
...God this still makes me cry tears of joy and gives shivers....jesus he played with every fiber of his soul everytime......
Hendrix was amazing and all. But only Stevie could make this song sound like this. He took it to a whole new level!
A true artist.

never really heard his music until this clip, but i sure as shit am impressed with his skills.... AMAZING!!
Oh...man!! SRV is Legend. His music still haunts me.
I just don't know what to say anymore when I watch this guy play..........
We will never see his likes again......
because he played way better than anyone else, he was in a different league... it was awesome, magic, wonderful whatever you want to call it, almost supernatural
no man should play like that
Stevie will always be my top inspiration. I just always loved the man's depth and beauty, as well as his amazing playing and that voice!
The best live version he ever played. Thank goodness it was captured. RAVE ON!!
fuckin fantastic
Wow! That was fierce. Stevie was on top of game there. SRV and Hendrix had to have been two of the most wickedly talented guitarist to have ever picked up an electric guitar. Amazing talent that guy was.
unique man was Stevie his music lives all over the world. RIP Vaughan!
I would have died if those two were still here playing today! That would have been one site to see! Their up there in heaven rocking it out right now though I bet

Stevie left behind some amazing work and also amazing guitar work that will never be matched again
Has it really been 30 years already? Time flies
Beautiful talented humble funny kind SRV RIP you are loved and missed THE GOAT
I read on Wikipedia that he originally wanted to be a drummer, he got the rythm down so good, unlike many guitarist. amazing guitarst and singer too, RIP man

RIP Stevie,We miss you
gotta respect 1989 MTV for giving this exposure to Stevie with this unbelievable footage.
Always wanted the full video of this. I played this until the VHS wore out. Its the most unbelievable version of this song I ever heard
I've never seen this clip, but I did get to see him 6 times while he was alive. He played this song like a motherphuqer, when he was in a groove there was never anyone better and there never will be. Jesus those sustained bends with the whammy.
that outro gave me chills for a solid 30 seconds. wow. incredible
Just like how All Along the Watch Tower was improved upon by Hendrix from Dylan's original, SRV took improved on Voodoo Child from Jimi. As a fan of both I just would have loved to see BOTH do this song together, imagining that gives me chills
What possessed this guy to play with such unbelievable brilliance? That's just mind blowing. WOW!
5:28
Jesus that's one badass note.
I have spent hours rewinding his version.
Ufff stevie ray vaughan liveee
What a great version of this song
among the best now in heaven what aband GOD has miss you ill join the band soon as I get there drummer redvette
That's funny you mention that because that's exactly how I became really familiar with this song, when Stevie performed it!
exelent i did lisen to him in argentina throut the radio .....the best..
err...wow...derr....doh. Best of the performances of this cover he has done that I've seen.
This version is Voodoo Child, but Stevie pronounced it Chile, so yeah that's why it's printed like that on the back of his CD Couldn't Stand The Weather and it's why most of his performances that are are here say Chile and not Child
bluesacoustics:
I think you are right - NOBODY. Stevie, you were & are the best. You are missed & loved. Tell Jimi , "Howdy!"
Great description. You are so right.
An absolutely mean & wicked version. You gotta sell your soul to play like that.
Has anyone ever controlled feedback as great as SRV? 5:36
Poor Hendrix. Had the kid lived to be 35 like SRV, maybe, just maybe he could have gotten there.
dude that was the most awesome version I've ever seen Stevie play. RIP SRV we miss you.
Now we have Lady GaGa. Yay.. not
Stevie we miss ya!!!!
Such a good version of this. I wonder if any soundboard or audience recordings of decent enough quality exist of this.
Yeah!!!!! anyone on earth within the next hundred years that can match this i will cut my heart out of my chest and feed it to you, No joke Seriously
10/3 Stevie!! Happy Birthday!! We still Love You!
I agree Buddy. "God have mercy" 4:25
RIP man, one of the greatest
Peace and Love- Peace and Love
my god!...those hammer-ons and pull-offs he does at exactly 1:19-1:20 sound so fast and clean...they almost seem sythetic...like digitized...like no human can be making that sound with there fingers and metal strings...UGGG ...my guitar hero man..SRV 4 eva
What more can you want after that!
Dude was not playin round with it!
best tone ever with a Strat... or any stringed instrument for that matter... baddest of the gunslingers...
Should have left the last few seconds of Kurt Loder's comment in, it was a respectful bookend to the performance. I have it on VHS. Kurt said, seriously, "Stevie Ray Vaughan, the way he'll be remembered by fans around the world."
Amen to that one my friend!!!!!
Hendrix and Stevie FTW!
i would have loved to see him live
Rave on Stevie Ray Vaughan!!!
that was some crazy shit... The best !
obrigado pelo video, SRV e Hendrix obrigado.
Does anyone have the full version of this or the full concert? I have been searching for years.
F@*#N BRILLIANT!!
That would be our residential TH-cam SRV flamer for ya!
SRV had amazing sense of timing,i bet he could play drums well too
the sound he had was incredible, raw and organic.
once you have a sweet sound you could play 2 notes and it would sound ace
my hero too,and hendrix he was an inovator,he started all of this.lets not forget that.
you can keep your vai and satriani,i hate that plastic playing.
peace
Daz
Darren Claxton sentiment shared, except I really think satch is a hell of a composer. Vai is purely a stage character..mostly garbage IMO.
Every time my ol'e lady tells me that us men aren't good mult-itaskers, I show her this and say, "now you do that and chew some gum at the same time"
See how he grinds his teeth. Coke. Still the best ever. Pure emotion expressed through guitar strings.
He was sober around this time. He’s chewing nicotine gum.
right on!!!
The gentle soul that Hendrix seemed to be, he would have been blown away by it. But...this is not better than Hendrix.
he's was the best.
Well said.
He also played on extremely thick strings, with his tubescreamers and Twin reverb amps.
His legendary tone was his thick strings and how he bashed the hell out of the guitar.
Ya they did
plus i believe he actually had two tube screamers but im not sure if thats what gave the tone on this video.
BAD ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That tone=)
WOW!
MY GOD!! That note he hit's right @ 5:43 is just So REAL~
This is just great! Love SRV. Really prefer his Voodoo Chile to Hendrix. And his hats were fantastic!
he was the next hendrix. shame there hasnt been a next SRV
@cmc2234 i was at the orthodontists and I heard a song I hadnt heard before on the quiet radio. I immediatley knew it was SRV and was right when the vocals came in
Oh my God... 2:10 blew my mind.
OMG, me too.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could post it
he knocked that shit out of the fuckin park son! hot damn
You got that right. No offesne to the Kenny fans but he's never brought the same intensity, energy, and style to Voodoo Chile. He just basically tried to play exactly like Stevie. He took the song to a whole different place and still kept the same bad ass feeling that Jimi initially put in the song!
good god.
always nice to see/hear srv, although i like his version in his early days better then this one :-)
Actually Voodoo Chile is the version he recorded, its the right name.
At 4:30 he made the guitar scream damnnn what a legend
I'm thinking this was filmed by MTV since the rest of this video where Stevie waves to the crowd is used on VH1's Legends program they did a few years ago. So I'm sure it's out there somewhere but I doubt we'll ever see it
