  • This episode of Grounded takes a look at Brymon Airways, a regional airline which began operations in the South West of England and went on to become form central part of the UK's largest commuter airline. Brymon, founded by a journalist and a racing driver began operations in the early 1970s with island hopping flights to the Scilly Isles would later play a key part in the formation of London City Airport and also played an important role operating North Sea oil support flights using their rugged De Havilland Dash-7 turboprops to the UK's most northerly airport at Unst.
    The Brymon Story has lots of twists and turns, skirting bankruptcy in their early years and seeing rescue from an unlikely saviour, a failed merger and successful de-merger, many profitable years under new ownership and finally forming a large part of a commuter network puzzle so grab a brew and sit down and enjoy the Brymon story...
    After this episode may I suggest watching my episode on Air SouthWest, the airline which followed in Brymon's footsteps (quite literally) when it began operations one day after Brymon's departure from Plymouth. The Air SouthWest episode is available here: • Grounded: Air Southwest
    I mention London City Airways during this episode, Brymon was key in establishing London City Airport but British Midland wanted a slice of the action and formed EuroCity Express, quickly renamed to London City Airways to capitalise on this, even going as far as operating identical routes against Brymon. The London City Airways episode is available here: • Grounded: London City ...
    If you like hearing about little regional airlines then I suggest checking out my episode on Gill Airways who were considered "The North East's own airline", that episode is here: • Grounded: Gill Airways
    If you are interested in airlines from Bristol then check out Paramount Airways, the UK's first MD-83 operator which folded after the chairman absconded with millions in company funds... The Paramount Episode is available here: • Grounded: Paramount Ai...
    ** PRODUCTION NOTES **
    First off, this is a long one so I apologise if it was too long and/or boring for folks. I had a lot to cover and while I was able to trim it down a bit with some stuff being cut there were other parts which I felt were either too important or interesting to cut.
    With regard to the aircraft names, I found out very late on that some aircraft did wear an alternate name on their starboard side (so not just Cornwall/Kernow) such as the "Shetland Islands" aircraft which wore the Gaelic translation on the opposite side.
    I tried to keep the route information simple after a certain point, this was simply because Brymon, like a number of other regional carriers would chop and change routes seasonally so after a certain point it becomes very hard to keep track of - and it also inflates the episode runtime needlessly.
    ** 50th Episode Approaches **
    Can you believe that this is the 49th episode of Grounded? I sure can't :) Episode 50 is on the way and looks at another airline close to my heart. I will hopefully be doing a special episode to follow on which offers a behind the scenes look at Grounded and my channel in general as well as some Q & A so if you do have a question or want to know more then head on over to my website and send one in on the contact form, or post down below - all sensible questions will be answered, the not so sensible ones maybe too ;)
    I really appreciate any comments and feedback on this or other episodes as well as suggestions for future episodes. Believe me, if I say that your airline is "on the list", it really is :) Check back to see future episodes or better yet, subscribe to catch them as they land and as always, thanks for watching!

    Spring 1980 I flew a Britten Normal Islander from Bellingham, Washington State to SEA. I sat in the R hand seat. Being a 21 year old snot nosed av geek I'd spliffed up before the flight. That runway comes up at you VERY fast when you land.

    Just found your excellent area and am working back - top stuff and you deserve much more success - fingers crossed. One odd one - I’m sure after a year of City operations a decision was made to find the most frequent flyer between CIty and Paris - what titan of industry would be identified - to everyone’s surprise it was a teenage schoolgirl who would commute back and forth between I seem to remember parents - oh those early dockland days 😂

      Thanks Ewan, it's become a recurring joke how I can work trains into episodes but this time it was too easy - and far too much fun to slag off the Vomiter and Bendolino ;)

    Can't help but notice G-BFGP, Aurigny once had that twin otter if I'm not mistaken?

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed they did, it was only with Brymon for a short time, Feb 1978 to May 1980 then with Aurigny until November 1987. She moved about a bit after that but seemingly still flies in the Maldives having been fitted with floats, the latest picture I could find was 2014.

      I was offered a job with them back in early 2008 but had just accepted a position at another airline, I still wonder how things would have turned out for me had I switched and gone with them.

    Are you working/going to do a Monarch episode?

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I have got a rather large research docket on Monarch and have done an early draft of their early years. I've been holding off a while as I am waiting to see what else their administration shakes out of the tree. I covered my final days in the industry a few years back and that was a painful episode but Monarch were my favourite, while I know the episode will probably finish me off I also want to do a good job, for them :)

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David, I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I do like the slide show set up, it costs me about 3 days in production but I do like the flexibility which I wouldn't get from using stock footage.
