Recently had my first snow trip snowboarding (I mostly ski)in New Zealand. I rode all my dad’s gear from 1996. Joyride and og drake bindings and airwalks for boots. The old airwalks did wonders for the first few days of learning. Although once I got my confidence up the old material started to degrade after dragging the toe of the boot through turns. Gaffa tape fixed it up for the remaining week of boarding wet cold feet but not terrible. I’m looking at the boa stuff here and I reckon I’ll try get some new boots and bindings to suit the old joyride. Super informative video by the way got some good ideas of what now to look for.
My first pair of snowboard boots, that I used for years back in the early 90s, was the most basic pair of black Sorels you could buy. No special liner or anything. I beveled the heel and toe with a kitchen knife to help eliminate massive drag on both sides. I'd put the boots on in the morning, and the last step was to tightly wrap around the ankle and instep with a ton of duct tape to lock my heel into place. I'd literally have to cut myself out at the end of the day. Was *die hard* about the sport. Broke, and with the worst gear, but rode so much I ended up getting kicked out of high school twice because I was always on the mountain. After that, though, good boots have always been something that I really, REALLY appreciate.

Stiff boots on stiff binding on stiff board it’s preferred for most hard-charging soft boot carvers and even freeriding if you’re a heavy weight over 220 pounds. It’s not important for park in the same way but weight are a factor on gear. Most snowboard and gear are made for 140 lbs. I do spend 6+ hours in them 5 days a week so I am definitely going through a pair of boots about every season and a half. Is there a lace up boot that’s good for an instructor? Hey guys, LOVE the channel!!!!! I have a YES The Greats Uninc and am buying a Nidecker Mosquito as I wanna start carving and dialling in some nice lines. I’m looking for a pair of boots that would work with both these boards if possible. Any ideas or suggestions? Sorry to ask in a comment section but I live in Japan and I have wide feet. Can’t get 32s over here, thinking about Ride or Burton, but I’m looking to get educated on this topic. Cheers in advance, if you have the time, of course 🙌🏻
If you like to do "set it and forget it" with traditional laces, and want your laces to stay in place all day, and not move as you tighten them, change your boot laces for waxed hockey laces. They work wonderfully for snowboarding boots.
Love it! Some great info guys, I've been loving the long format info sessions! My question is, I have a pretty wide foot... but it's only 9.5... and there don't seem to be many options out there...
Replaced my 2016 pat moore infuse with new Burton ions. Tried them 4 times and just did not like them and ended up selling them and going back to my old infuses even with the holes haha. I wanted to try the k2 thraxxis my buddy who is also around 6’3” 230 loves his. The one thing I’ll say I don’t like about the infuse is they are a huge pita to get off hahaha.
Out of curiosity, what is the story with the Transition snowboard on the far left? It looks similar to my first board called Treeline which was made in Kelowna in the mid 80s... the same shape nose and it had metal fins by the back binding but not on the front like this one. I've never heard of Transition snowboards before and couldn't find anything about them online. Do you know where they were made?
Its still preference , Fawcett would choose a Still Boot , where Shane would go softer on that set up! Depends how aggressive your carving style is or if you lean more towards freestyle riding!
Literally ordered new boots the day before you released this video😂 went with Burton Photons (over ThirtyTwo Lashed BOA). Let's see how this plays out!
Great video! I am shoping around for a new boot - I have been riding Ride's Cadence boots for 5 or 6 seasons and love the double boa system but I find these boots packout around day 30 and cranking on the boas creates pressure points around the lacing system - I am noticing it especially this season with the icy conditions! Suggestions/viddeo on women's boots would be appreciated!
I've gotten used to buying burton stuff because it just works so well for me and I know how it fits and will work with each other nicely. Mainly being a fan of their bindings and boots. but I'm kind of done with them. Just bought a new pair of SLX and they are no where near meant to be as durable as the old ones as they changed the liners to be much cheaper. Always had outstanding customer service with Burton but I tried to see if they could help me with the new pair I got because the little thing that goes I the toebox was missing on none side and the liner collapsed in a little and has a pressure point. i didn't want to send them the entire set of boots for them to be shredded up so I suggested that they see if they have any spare liners and they couldn't help me. I had ions the last 2 years and I did not lake them as much as m old slx,a little too stiff and not as durable as the slx. what other brands have a boot that can compare?
@@kosycat1 We hear you ! Nidecker has a Designer that you will be framilar with ;) Do check out there boots as Shane & Mark used them a lot last seaon and were very impressed ! We also found the 32 Focus Boa Sweetin to be very well made …but also super stiff / responsive ( a lot of our team choose this ) hope that helps!
I went with double boa for my first pair of boots, last year, and I have issues with them loosening up on their own throughout the day. Particularly when I walk in them. I find I have to tighten them back down several times each day. Burton Photon's. I find it quite annoying and plan to go a different route when I need a new pair.
Great video! You guys are the best so much detail and history. ❤️ I remember in the early '90s, Puma shoes came out with the first disc, called Puma Disc for running shoes. Then, I think Boa started, as you said in 2001. I'm sure it's not the same company, but maybe Puma started it or they maybe the same group of people ? So on my Vans Infuse should I go down half size still (but not full size ) right ? I know vans already also size down a maybe 1/4 - half then regular shoe size already as I measure the insoles..
I'm a DC phantom fan i do throw in remind inserts they are super comfortable even though they are on the stiffer side and ive grown to love the double boa and let's face it they are the coolest looking boot far which is the most important thing lol
Good video guys. I'd love to hear you talk about custom insoles and using aftermarket intuition liners in place of the stock ones. I suppose some people with nonstandard feet just need the additional help to really dial a boot where others have no problem with stock. Wasn't Mark involved in the development of those crazy high boardercross intuition liners? I'm sure they aren't recommended for regular riding, but I'm curious. Also, I believe Mark had said he rides Photons, which is a bit surprising as they are only single zone boa (with the snugger strap). Ions too stiff for his preference or is it just boa vs speed zone?
With step-ons you need a stiffer boot because the bindings add no additional support. Traditional bindings just give you more options like keep the boot looser and crank the binding down for stiffness at the same time. You just can’t do that as much with step-on.
Given the comments on sizing, I would love to hear a bit more on "comfort" vs "performance" fitting. Are you implying that going smaller was really about heel-hold? I've generally been snowboarding in 9.5s while my street size is 10.0. Back in the late 90s I tried going down to 9.0 and it KILLED my feet and ankles. More recently the boot vids talk about comfort vs performance, hence my request for your thoughts on the matter. Thanks again!
Guys. Thanks for another great video. I wanted to hear a bit more on what are the top drivers of a boot's response are. For context, I chatting with Dave D on how I wanted Step-On Photon flex but with a dual-zone BOA. He suggested I put the Photon liners in the Ion shell (easy fix for a pro!). I generally think of liners as the comfort part of the boot and less of the performance part. Any thought in general on how the liner would or would not contribute to softening a boot like the Ion? (Note, I've been on Ions for years before moving to Step-Ons.) Thanks!
Just buy an aftermarket liner in that case. The liner definitely changes stiffness of the boot setup. Also using any sort of strap like strap-ins works for making a boot feel stiffer.
Interesting to hear your comment at 30:45 because my setup this season is very similar (2024 Stratos with Atlas Pro and Vans Infuse boots) but the responsiveness feels great. Definitely have to watch out for surprise moguls though
The shop where I bought my Burton Ions says that heat molding will not improve heel grip, but that it only accelerates the break-in period and might actually make heel grip worse (I have narrow ankles and historically have trouble with heel lift). I am already using two j-bars... one on each side of my heel. Are they BS-ing me because they don't want to bother with the heat molding. Will heat molding help the boot better grip my foot?
Thx for the Video 🙏 could you do a similar video on bindings 101? Did i get it right that you would recommend the board to be stiffest part then bindings medium/hard & boot medium/ soft ?
Thanks for another great and informative vid. I have remind medic insoles and for me they are excellent. Really interested to see what you guys think of the supermatics, I find them great and with wide feet it’s a quick entry system that gives me more boot choice (bet you’ll find them heavy though).
Anyone wanna give some feedback on my new setup this year? Thinking it might be a little too stiff. YES pyl board, Burton cartel and burton photons double BOA
Super nice video. So you guys do not recommend the Thirty Two Christensons Banditos as the only everyday boots? For powder, but also groomers, side hits, jumps in the park, some jibs?
We have used those for all mountain - they are great for those coming from the " old skool" era - Lateral movement is great and very comfy obviously. Mached with a stiffer binding this is a great boot!
I'm close to 200lbs so apart from comfort, my top priority is stiffness. I want them super stiff. Allows me to carve hard, takes the effort off the calves on the toeside and protects my ankles which have had a hard life. And these days for me dual Boa is the only game in town.
I was looking at the Burton Driver X with Jones Flagship. I was originally thinking or pairing with the Union Atlas. Too stiff? What binding would you recommend for this boot/board combo?
If you’re a bigger guy on a big board go stiff all the way I have ions atlas on a black snowboard of death 169w and I’m 240lb I find the ion too soft a big stiff board needs stiff boots and bindings to power it
I have burton ions new this year on day 16 they are starting to feel soft and my feet slide around a bit I got the remind insoles they helped the movement but I was thinking of getting the sbc wrap from intuition was wondering if they would help stiffen it up a bit? I’m 245lbs and 6’3 on a BSOD 169w
So i have some 2017/2018 Step-On bindings - been about that long since i last snowboarded and somehow tosses the boots in moving over those years.... are the bindings still good? If i get some 2025 boots will it still function?
Went from speed lace to Boa. There is nothing similar about it :P Basically you are going from primitive tools to space age tech. Whoever spends more than 10 days on the mountain/year should get a Boa boot. It will change your life. Now on my second pair after retiring the first Boa boots (Ride Insano 2012) with 9 seasons on their back. Once you go Boa you can never go back.
BOA. Best for shoes that need tightening at different levels and tight. Ice skaters and cyclists (mountain and road) are important customers for them. They have a LIFETIME WARRANTY last I checked.
I'm tripping up on the mondo size. Says I should get a size 9 according to mondo size. But my old boots that I've had for 9 -10 years and they are the same size as my shoe size (10.5 US) Thoughts? I'm trying to order online. Preferably the Van's infuse or something same price range that is lighter in weight.
Hi, I have Burton Ruler boots with a double boa system and I find that the inner side of my boot on the ankle bone gets really sore. Why is this? And how do I adjust the boa system to put less pressure there while still being not too loose around the top of the boot? Should I be running my boot looser at the top? I have tried backing off the boa that tightens the bottom section of the boot but this don’t seem to help at all. The only thing that seems to help is loosing the top boa section, but this tend to leave the boot feeling too sloppy 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️ Should I be looking for a lace up system instead to offer me a bit more adjustability in the tightness of the boot in different areas? Or is there some way of doing up the boa system that I’m not aware of to give me more flexibility in the mid boot section? Any help here would be appreciated as it really makes for an uncomfortable day on the slopes
Look for a set of J-Bars to add to the ankle area - this will add additional support in that zone . Angles on your board may also be adding to this , some adjustments there are likely needed !
@@tributeboardshop thanks so much for getting back to me on this. I will look at getting some of these J-bars and look at my angles from my setup too. Thanks for providing such great content

Haven’t watched the full vid yet but question. I’m relatively a beginner, we’ve been renting gear when we go but I’d like to have my own so I just have to rent a board. I wear vans daily for my tennis shoe, but when I look at the vans hi standard oG and pro, it says these are for intermediate to advanced riders. So the vans boots will be a poor choice for me or can I still wear them?
Perfect beginner boots - don't pay too much attention to those designations. Union Strata bindings with those vans and a jones mountain twin and you're set.
Would be nice to have store to try boots. Market is so small here in Finland so its Thirtytwo or Burton. Only boots that fits me right was Nike Kaijus. After that i have been in pain lol
Honestly, a great video would be “how to buy gear, used vs. new” to help know what needs to be bought firsthand vs second. there is some stuff (ex boots) that just can’t be cheaped out on or bought used, but there is other avenues to put together a kit for a fraction of the cost (ex bindings, beginner boards).
Suffered from boot pain my entire life until I used Adidas Accera boots. Now Adidas have stopped making them, so I will have to find me a new brand. Anyone used Adidas and found comfort with another brand?

Hey guys, LOVE the channel!!!!! I have a YES The Greats Uninc and am buying a Nidecker Mosquito as I wanna start carving and dialling in some nice lines. I’m looking for a pair of boots that would work with both these boards if possible. Any ideas or suggestions? Sorry to ask in a comment section but I live in Japan and I have wide feet. Can’t get 32s over here, thinking about Ride or Burton, but I’m looking to get educated on this topic. Cheers in advance, if you have the time, of course 🙌🏻
@@damiendonovan6666 too bad about 32 ! If looking at burton get the Photons . Nidecker has the Rift boot we also love !
If you like to do "set it and forget it" with traditional laces, and want your laces to stay in place all day, and not move as you tighten them, change your boot laces for waxed hockey laces. They work wonderfully for snowboarding boots.
Truth!! we have some of our shop riders that always use those
Planning to get boss for the tightness, so this was nice for reinforcing that logic. Hard to get my current boots tight.
EST step-on bindings with adjustable high backs are coming next season
Love it! Some great info guys, I've been loving the long format info sessions!
My question is, I have a pretty wide foot... but it's only 9.5... and there don't seem to be many options out there...
I just got some New Vans High Standard OG, and One is Narrower than the Other... AKA Crap. So I'm Sending them Back to get the Ride Lasso Pro.
Correction, the most important thing to buy 1st is a Ski Key ! Keep up the amazing work guys.
? what is a ski key ? haha
Love it! I did the same shit in 1990… Sorel boot with ski boot liners.
This beauty is a 1980-81 out of Ontario Canada!
I was looking at that board a good chunk of the video. It’s a cool old board
That was great, never thought much about boot flex before. Would you choose a stiff or soft boot to pair with Union Force on a Jones Mountain Twin?
Its still preference , Fawcett would choose a Still Boot , where Shane would go softer on that set up!
Depends how aggressive your carving style is or if you lean more towards freestyle riding!
Literally ordered new boots the day before you released this video😂 went with Burton Photons (over ThirtyTwo Lashed BOA). Let's see how this plays out!
Are you a beginner or experienced?
Great video! I am shoping around for a new boot - I have been riding Ride's Cadence boots for 5 or 6 seasons and love the double boa system but I find these boots packout around day 30 and cranking on the boas creates pressure points around the lacing system - I am noticing it especially this season with the icy conditions! Suggestions/viddeo on women's boots would be appreciated!
We will get Carmen on a epi soon to go over the womens side! Most of the Shop Gals Ride the 32 Lashed or the Burton Felix !
Lock it open is great advise.
@@tributeboardshop Thanks guys appricate that!
I went with double boa for my first pair of boots, last year, and I have issues with them loosening up on their own throughout the day. Particularly when I walk in them. I find I have to tighten them back down several times each day. Burton Photon's. I find it quite annoying and plan to go a different route when I need a new pair.
Could it be the liner packing out during the day?
best snowboard page out there
Great video!
You guys are the best! Love the videos! Much love from the Cardiff crew!
Photons are double boa. Also my favorite boot. On my 3rd pair in 4 years.
@@Tych333 photon step ons are not double boa, they have one boa for the whole boot and one boa snugger strap
@@joshuasills My bad, I didn't realize the step ons were different.
What do yall think of the new ride fuse?
Definitely have to watch out for surprise moguls though
would love to see an episode on splitboard boots and bindings!
We have a few on Bindings already but for sure will get one going on boots!
My imprint v2 killed my ankles.
I chopped out most of the outside ankle pads.
So painful.
Tippie reference! 🏋️♂️
Thank you.... massively enlightening for this dinosaur skater/snow noob
Sounds like a sweet ride to us! Loosen your upper boa for a bit more lateral flex as needed !
Nice. Thanks. I will pair the Banditos with Jones Orion Bindings and Hovercraft 2023 snowboard.@@tributeboardshop
Nice! I will pair these with the Jones Orion Bindings, and the Hovercraft and the Otto. Gonna do it, right? Thanks.@@tributeboardshop
I'm close to 200lbs so apart from comfort, my top priority is stiffness. I want them super stiff. Allows me to carve hard, takes the effort off the calves on the toeside and protects my ankles which have had a hard life.
And these days for me dual Boa is the only game in town.
Mark, try Northwave boots and you can stay tied up all day. Stiff and comfortable!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
You guys have any recommendations for aftermarket liners to improve heal hold in nitro capitals?
Is it common for last year boot model to be completely sold out? Been trying to find the hi standard pro Cole nav in in black
Great overview. Very well presented.
Is there anything comparable is stiffness to the Burton SLX but in BOA not speed lace?
So i have some 2017/2018 Step-On bindings - been about that long since i last snowboarded and somehow tosses the boots in moving over those years.... are the bindings still good? If i get some 2025 boots will it still function?
@@Whiterqbbit yes - fitment should be all good with new boots - they are unchanged but the bindings did gonthrough some updates since 2017
Went from speed lace to Boa.
Try your best to get to a shop - we never reccoment ordering online when it comes to boots! Its too important !
@@beauthao 10.5 fits. That's my shoe size. I returned 3 sets of boots following mondo.
Hi,
I have Burton Ruler boots with a double boa system and I find that the inner side of my boot on the ankle bone gets really sore.
Why is this? And how do I adjust the boa system to put less pressure there while still being not too loose around the top of the boot?
Should I be running my boot looser at the top?
I have tried backing off the boa that tightens the bottom section of the boot but this don’t seem to help at all.
The only thing that seems to help is loosing the top boa section, but this tend to leave the boot feeling too sloppy 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Should I be looking for a lace up system instead to offer me a bit more adjustability in the tightness of the boot in different areas?
Or is there some way of doing up the boa system that I’m not aware of to give me more flexibility in the mid boot section?
Any help here would be appreciated as it really makes for an uncomfortable day on the slopes
Look for a set of J-Bars to add to the ankle area - this will add additional support in that zone . Angles on your board may also be adding to this , some adjustments there are likely needed !
@@tributeboardshop thanks so much for getting back to me on this.
I will look at getting some of these J-bars and look at my angles from my setup too.
Thanks for providing such great content
Also Burton spend all that money developing step on version 2 but don’t make SLx compatible. Not that i ride step on
love all the videos...thanks guys
Huh, I thought I made a mistake by buying Union Forces and Deeluxe Deemons, but it felt fine and now I was glad to hear that apparently it's a legit thing to do
Are you a beginner?
@@luqmuhmmad2616 I am
@@luqmuhmmad2616 Yea
7:15 Hidden Innuendo. Literally. "Just Because its Tight, Doesn't mean its stiff". Bwaahaahaaaa. 🤠
You can still wear them!!
Perfect beginner boots - don't pay too much attention to those designations. Union Strata bindings with those vans and a jones mountain twin and you're set.
When You say Sled Riders; Are you Refereeing to Snowmobiles? I Run a Husky on a Sled; as in My Dog Pulls me on a Harness attached to a Dog Sled...
Would be nice to have store to try boots. Market is so small here in Finland so its Thirtytwo or Burton. Only boots that fits me right was Nike Kaijus. After that i have been in pain lol
I rode my Kaijus into the ground and I loved them. I’m in the ride fuse now and they fit similar to the Kaijus but with stiffer lateral flex
Malavita discontinued????????
Step-ons terrify me.
Not putting my spine at risk over that few seconds of convenience.
Any insight on vans linerless boots?
it was worth every minute!!!!
Speedlace is 90% annoying finding it then when you find it 10% of the time they perfect. Burton SLx need boa like ion sick of speedlace only
As nice as Boa’s are, I still vastly prefer speed laces
Badass video!
I hope you guys do an episode on affordable gear options. You guys talk about all this cool technology, but a lot of it is hidden behind high prices
RIP Adidas
Footprint insoles are better! Remind insoles are good but not near the level of footprint.
Awesome
Suffered from boot pain my entire life until I used Adidas Accera boots. Now Adidas have stopped making them, so I will have to find me a new brand. Anyone used Adidas and found comfort with another brand?
Try the 32 Focus Boa , so customizable ! Could be a good choice coming from Adidas
Second this! Have ridden two pairs of Adidas Tact adv. I have never tried a boot with such great heal hold and the sole is amazing with ultraboost. Would you recommend the 32 boot for me to? Have pretty wide feet, high arches and skinny ankles 😅
I just keep buying dead stock Nike boots from 2013
My main artery doesn't go to my feet.......
Smh. Just bought boots online the other day. lol
