      That's also the reason why the diaries and journal entries are in spanish, if you look closely. And why the infinite corridor messed me up the first time. As a german, we use N-O-S-W for compass directions. I'm also used to understanding N-E-S-W in English, but N-E-S-O threw me out of the loop for a second. 😂 Especially because I only glanced at the directions and thought E was a W...

    I love when survival horror games confine you to a small space and then you start slowly unlocking more rooms. The way the game make you think, taking into account supplies and enemies that may still be alive, etc. It's so much fun. The difficulty wears away cause it's the same thing each time but switching up routes and becoming more efficient keeps the replay value high. Damn fun, nice when developers really nail it. Tormented Souls is an insanely impressive game.

    I had a good feeling about this game when I first saw it a while back, but was hesitant due to several other indie or smaller studios trying their hand at "classic" survival horror, just for them to miss the mark. But after playing the demo for this... it made those doubts disappear and I immediately ordered the game after that.

      Yeah I feel the same, I did have the switch version pre-ordered and was going to get that this month but it’s also been pushed back to the same date as the PS4. I suspect being an indie game they are using the raw power of PC and PS5 to power through performance issues that might be present on older platforms hence the delay. I’ll get PS5 next year hopefully so when I do TS will be purchased along side it.

    Just a note about the operating room puzzle, which stumped me for about 30 minutes also, not only do you get the hint in the observation room (with foreshadowing a later enemy), there is also a note you can find which talks about a ritual where twins would dance in circles on a moonless night to bring back the dead. Realising this I actually think that that puzzle was really well done and I was just being dumb for not picking up on it sooner

We've been working on a visual novel of sorts trying to blend in the concept of the traditional survival horror since we don't have the manpower or frankly the expertise to make something as spectacular as this. We'll definitely be learning from this game as we move into development on a proper 3d engine some day. Thank you for keeping this genre alive, not many people feel proud about endorsing this style but in my opinion modern gaming owes most of its success to the innovations made in the survival horror genre.

    It's a small thing, but as a gun nerd I love that the shotgun is a single shot slamfire gun. So many times when people put "handmade" guns in a game they're just nonsense that wouldn't function, but this is a real life design that's both simple and effective. And it fits so well for a survival horror type game, when you only get one shot and reloading involves taking the two pieces apart, knocking the empty casing out, putting a new shell in and effectively re-assembling the gun, you're not gonna be going guns blazing with it.

    There is a 50 minutes interview with the directors on youtube, only in spanish though. There they touch a lot of cool stuff about the game. Also the voice acting, which is probably the biggest flaw of the game imo. I'm gonna quote what they said in english: "We recieved a lot of complains during the demo about the voice acting, and that's on us. We hired a company, through a webpage, that does voice acting for ads and the like. You send them the script and they reply with the voices. So we sent them the scripts but the people that made the voices did it on their own, separated, with no context as a result sadly." I'm gonna guess they didn't know that that's how it would end up. They also said that it's something they certainly want to improve for a potential next game.

    I knew what to do, but over and over I'd press buttons I was absolutely certain matched the record only for nothing to happen. I'm not even tone deaf, either; I literally write my own music and I was harmonizing with the record to match the buttons. I just couldn't get it.
    I also had trouble with the cash register, but that's one of those puzzles that's objectively very easy, but still the kind of thing I never would have figured out on my own. Freezing the medallion was also an issue, but only because the game glitched and wouldn't let me into the VHS kitchen.

    Two biggest hang ups for me with Tormented Souls- 1) Enemy encounters don’t feel optional. It feels like it’s never designed well around dodging a fight. 2) A handful of these puzzles seem intentionally obtuse, and most people will have to refer to a guide multiple times. A good puzzle allows the player to make connections. Tormented Souls doesn’t give the player enough information.
    That said, I was hooked. Voice acting and dialogue is awful but never bothered me. Core loop and atmosphere is fun.

    See to me what dictates “survival horror” is not the camera angle whether its fixed, 3rd person or 1st person. Survival horror to me is when Im placed in a horrific situation, having to find items to progress and open up the location(s) like a massive escape room, as well as defend myself against whatever horrific force is trying to kill me and halt my progress. So to me this game fits the bill pretty well

    hello, chilean watcher here, just wanted to contribute my grain or sand: I didn't know this game was made by a chilean studio until a few days ago, and then the voice acting and text completely made sense because in my experience, english teachers here mostly care about the words and not much for the spoken side (they do what they can with that one hour of teaching per week), but as some others have said it, it actually can be seen as a plus to the experience
    Also the shotgun is an escopeta echisa, I can't believe I didn't realize it was made in chile just with that lol

    Finally got around to Tormented Souls last week and man it made me feel like a kid again. The puzzles were near perfect to the point of being challenging but when they managed to stump me and I did figure it out I felt like an idiot. My gripe with the game was a lack of limited inventory. I may be a glutton for punishment but I always liked the struggle of deciding what resource I need to leave behind in order to carry necessary key items to progress. It's like I need this door knocker so do I leave behind the shotgun shells or healing items? Then having to cope and change your tactics because on the way you were ambushed by an enemy who you would normally dispatch with a couple shotgun shells and you left those behind.

      @@justaguyonyoutube RE8 is a vanilla survival horror, most of the puzzles can be solved within the room they are in, and they are pretty easy. The game also is quite linear. Don’t get me wrong RE8 is still a very good game and fun as hell, but Tormented Souls is way superior if you enjoy survival horror puzzle solving and backtracking.. I was very impressed by TS don’t skip this game

    • @justaguyonyoutube
      @justaguyonyoutube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marklevy1785 RE8 is actually superior in my opinion, TS is really fun but village did puzzles in a perfect simple but not obvious fashion while having a world that didn't feel tedious to backtrack in. might just be my RE bias too because that's what i fell in love with after all. silent hill was always fun but i never loved it like i did resident evil and while i have fond memories of both from my childhood SH never stuck with me like RE or even the gamecube exclusive survival horror lite eternal darkness.

    • @marklevy1785
      @marklevy1785 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justaguyonyoutube everybody would have a different view on things, TS is more old school in every way including backtracking and puzzle solving (harder), . Obviously one has a much bigger budget and better production values. RE8 is designed to be casually beaten solving puzzles without much thought and barely any backtracking that is more reminiscent of RE4 than classic fixed camera RE1 and RE2. It is a fun formula but that is why I say is survival horror lite…it is a formula that seems to be working for Capcom and most likely the next RE games will follow the same path (great for sales and large audience). I would love for indie developers to keep making games like TS and fill the void of hard survival horror with hard puzzles (and many of them) and lots of backtracking (smaller niche audience)

    • @justaguyonyoutube
      @justaguyonyoutube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marklevy1785 I'd have to disagree whole heartedly, the puzzles in RE8 are actually more complex than anything found in previous entries and involves just as much backtracking, coming from someone who has played every mainline entry through multiple times save for classic RE2 and is currently on his 4th run of village. The biggest difference with village is that it takes what in my opinion is a far creepier approach to horror than something like TS or classic SH which is a very narrative focused approach. SH never had a great or even coherent narrative to speak of and TS has a decent narrative that just doesn't really hold many stakes. Meanwhile village and every other RE has a focus directly set on immersing you in a world and making you feel invested in what happens to the characters within them and that's special to me because survival horror narratives usually aren't a strong point. Again these are all just opinions and I'm having fun with this civil discussion so i don't want you to feel your opinions and takes aren't valid bit I disagree to some extent. Looking at the original trilogies of RE and SH I find myself drawn toward RE without hesitation because of how much more memorable RE has been for me, I can tell you just about every event in RE but i can't for the life of me remember most of the original SH trilogy certain events yes but the majority of it didnt really feel as memorable to me

    50% Silent Hill 1 as if it was its remastered version
    1% Silent Hill 1 The Movie :) the alley scene is identical in TS, while SH1 is different in a few ways
    5% Silent Hill 2 references and inspirations (Maria, Laura=Emma and the hospital setting - also present in SH1 tho)
    1% Silent Hill 4: The Room for that unkillable "ghost"
    5% Silent Hill: Origins with the mirrors transition to the otherworld and the whole Asylum-feel
    5% Resident Evil 2 on the PS1 with the similar inventory, safe rooms and saving system
    5% Resident Evil 2002 remake for the general aesthetics and fixed camera angles
    5% Resident Evil: Code Veronica for the twins plot and the mansion aesthetics similar to the Oxford mansion
    5% Fatal Frame 2 with the twins plot and ritual themes (but also similar to Cheryl and Alessa)
    5% Fatal Frame 5 with the character animations and cloth physics
    1% Alan Wake because of the eternal darkness *ahem
    1% Alone in the Dark for the same reason
    1% Clock Tower coz... clock puzzles haha
    1% Parasite Eve for the general plot involving Maria and the twins, or maybe I'm making things up by now
    1% Obscure for the same reason but more because of the puzzle style
    1% Haunting Ground for the puzzles and general tension, specially with that SH4 monster aka Debilitas lol
    1% Dino Crisis with the Floppy Disk item and its puzzle solution (similar to the DDK discs)
    1% Dead Space: Extraction on the Nintendo Wii... why? Google its cover art and you'll see :) Nailgun=Plasma Cutter
    5% Original stuff worth all of the inspirations, so don't take this small number for granted!
    My point is, this is NOT just a Resi clone, it is mostly a Silent Hill 1 remaster than anything else, and a game with all of these other games as inspirations, just can't be a bad one. Tormented Souls is freaking awesome! It's a dream come true for any SH1 fans like me that always wanted a remake.

I think the main issue is Caroline's behavior, I don't find it believable at all. Five minutes after finding one of her eyes has been taken out, she's casually talking with the first person she meets in this creepy place. She's not suspicious at all, not panicking, not trying to escape, nothing. Maybe it makes sense in the bigger picture of the story, maybe she's dreaming or crazy or something, but still it pulls me off of the game.
