    Asher’s outrage at the Pyramid’s continued attempts to outscience him is pretty funny. He even calls it an “unaccredited prismoid” in one of the Exodus quest descriptions.

      The power of good writing. Honestly, Asher was all set for something like this. He was a complicated character that they didn't have a lot of time for, unfortunately, but honestly, the fact he tried to understand something as abstract as the vex, his personal experiences with them turning him into an almost Ahab-level of obsessed, the contradiction this placed with them on their arm, What lore we got of him (please read his dreaming city lore tab, the one that features him and Ikora), How he changed so hard, at a fundamental level, when talking about/to his fireteam and Eris, all made for a complex and layered character you couldn't just look at the one-liners to see all their was and Its all incredible build-up to this one moment. What i hope *isn't* their final moment. This would be a satisfying ending to Asher's story, but the implications of Asher doing this, and coming out the other end would be amazing, even if it was as a future enemy.

    • @W00zl3
      @W00zl3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      hehehe88 - This is what people who ignore the lore don’t get. They see “annoying dialogue, don’t like” but miss these riveting story elements that truly make the character! For the questionable things that Bungie has done with their games, no one can ever say that they’re not storytelling artists! Their lore department is on another level and, personally, I think that is amazing!

    I feel like the phrase "brought the lake down" was a very particular choice of words, and I am just perplexed by it. If we look into the definitions of bring down, there are the more literal terms of moving things or calming people down. And of course, there's collapsing a structure. However, one that could possibly hold some credence here is to defeat or overcome something. He brought the lake down. He defeated the lake. He overcame the lake. Perhaps Asher discovered a way to affect the lake? Not in any way to destroy it, but to overcome it. Perhaps he found a way to make it work to his advantage. Embrace the vex that is already in him, but turn it around somehow. Maintain control. Overcome the lake by using it to his advantage. This is all still speculation, and honestly quite vague, but I think this could possibly be what they mean. I also, just like the idea of Asher finding a way to assimilate with the Vex in order to keep his mind, but boost it with the computational power of the collective. idk, spinfoil dreams, I guess.

    The vex have always been such a strange entity in the context of the darkness vs light. Though they're *obviously* our enemy, they don't entirely seem like they have to be. There's also the really bizarre case of the stuff they did to Nessus, and how it seems like while yes they converted it into a machine world, it's still HABITABLE for some reason; some scannables even point out that the weird red plants on the planet are being used by the Vex too. But animals live on Nessus and everything. Obviously part of this is thanks to the remnants of the Exodus Black, as a colony ship that had hundreds of years to sit and degrade, but it's really quite strange.
    The problem probably just boils down to them being a hive mind. You can't reason with a hive mind like you can with organics. I mean, I doubt we could ever reason with the Hive themselves either, but it's probably not *entirely* out of the question.
    Because ultimately, their goal of surpassing both the light and the dark seems quite in line with what might be the path we'll try to take, too. It's just that they by nature typically end up finding everything that isn't them as a threat to their goal. To have an equal probably goes against their design. Which is a bit of a shame, because I'd kind of like to see some "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" situations with us in general regarding the darkness, because it's really not good for either of us. The fallen are harnessing it, the hive basically embody it and can already Take Vex. (and the cabal are irrelevant /s) ...Plus there's that... weird connection Exos have with Vex, too... If they weren't a hive mind like they are, I do feel like there might be enough basis for them to call a temporary truce with humanity.
    It'd be kinda cool to see, but I highly doubt that'll ever happen, short of a surge of deviancy that leads to an independent submind or something.

    • @tsunertoo9149
      @tsunertoo9149 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can reason with a hive mind, but when you do then the hive mind might stop being so hive minded. It's already been shown that there are vex "splinters" that will break off from the greater in order to pursue what they believe to be the best course of action. And in the case of vex taking gaurdians, they show a very notable change of what you would consider to be normal Vex nature. I don't really see the Vex as the enemy myself, I see them more as an entity that really is ironically very single minded and simplistic in their comprehensions of our dimension. They will pursue their goal with seeming mindlessness, but upon providing them with enough proof of your own competency, they will relent, and reconsider what you are to them.

    • @tsunertoo9149
      @tsunertoo9149 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually even before this in the case failsafe and her crew, instead of annihilating them, they attempted to replicate the captain who according to Fail safe "loved machines". The Vex CAN be reasoned with, but to do so; first you must spark their curiosity, or prove to be a greater threat than they can contain.

    • @MrCreamster20
      @MrCreamster20 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the topic of hive minds Crysis 3 covers it very good. About halfway through the campaign you the nanosuit operator Alcatraz "Prophet" after having had some nano-procedures that manipulated the suits internal mechanisms that allow you the wearer to bend this newly unlocked nano-power to your own will; they then connect to a hivemind node thingy and gain temporary power and control over the ceph nearby until a reaver??(the big guy with the alien plasma rocket launcher) crashes down and ruins that party. Prophet now disconnected from the hivemind node becomes supercharged, slays everything while in this supercharged state taking much reduced damage with no suit energy loss. After the area is clear and suit returns to normal he radios back and says words to the effect of "the hivemind is raw power of which i can manipuate"; which he does in the boss encounter by first disabling 3 central hivemind nodes(using this hivemind manipulating power) within the buried superstructure at the base of the worm-hole generator which also conveniently becomes the alpha-ceph boss arena.
      Now imagine this in a D2 context but Asher Myir fully vexified(presumably with full control of himself) within the hivemind of the vex helping and/or actively hindering anything and everything and they may not be able to counter his efforts???

    • @francisharkins
      @francisharkins 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Vex have a strange goal, but kind of understandable in the form of a hive mind hyper intelligent AI. They cannot understand the Light as they cannot replicate it. Just like they can't replicate the Dark. Meaning they will TRY to understand it, to try and replicate it infinitely, driving the hive mind into a rampant state over eons. So they worshipped the Heart of the Black Garden a source of Dark, in hopes it would give answer the Vex saught, which then failed them by the interactions of the light. The future the Vex want is one with no light, no dark, no life, no change. The vex would then understand everything, their would be no factors to consider or need to continue growing, replicating, learning, simulating. A future with only 1 possibility and no more infinite possibilities.
      The Vex won't be dividing by zero any longer. The Vex are very likely a race that had better intentions in their origins and lost themselves with their power and madness caused by infinite futures and some they can not simulate and know. With Asher as a willing sacrifice though the Vex can in a sense pseudo simulate the light as they were abled to pseudo simulate the dark with the Black Garden's Heart. In turn possibly worshiping the light? Its not hard to believe with the monument/tomb they built for Saint-14 before even that event which was written in stone was altered with their very own power combined with the unpredictable nature of Light.

    The Warlock looked down at the moon one more time, once more before he had to leave it for good. He knew what was coming and knew he had to leave it, but his mind went back to his crazed kin. He could not simply leave. But he must.
    He could not abandon a fellow guardian, he had done that too many times, allowed to many to be harmed. The Awoken, The Red War…Cayde. He wouldn’t abandon one who had already given so much. But he must.
    He had knocked on the doors of gods, challenged the Darkness in its own domain and won, wielded Arc to vaporize foe after foe in countless battles. He could save one man, he could not let him throw himself away. But he must.
    He remembered the look in his fellow Awoken’s eyes when he spoke of his plans, clearly not realizing he had been there. His plan was madness, mad as he was, he would never succeed. But he must.
    His ghost looked up at him, “We should go. Shaxx sent for us.” He knew he had to. He knew that each guardian had their part, and some part of him envied the mad warlock, being able to die in a place so holy. And so he went, back to his own fight, but he made a promise that one day.
    He would return to Io. He would find that madman and bring him home.
    He must.

    Quite the interesting question you posed; Did Asher chose to stand with the Vex or did he commit a scorched earth move, with either resulting in his likely death?
    when I saw that entry, my thought process was that Asher's revenge was not completed with the destruction of the Genesis Mind; he needed to destroy the very thing it was steward over.
    but now that I heard things from another perspective; Asher may have committed both, in that he joined the Vex to fight the Darkness and denied it an asset.
    if that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how we'll encounter Asher again after dealing with the Darkness (even if only briefly)

    So glad I looked up the harpy in the last city override being Asher Mir. Glad this comes together in the lore and the game several months later to pay off.
    I admit I do not know as much of the lore as I should, but even with Asher Mir now in the last city at the end of the season of the splicer, a season focused heavily on the vex trying to sap the power of the city by casting it in an endless night, I have many questions. The vex never stopped attacking us, they never seemed to have learned independently from Quira commands that this wasn’t going to work. Doesn’t seem like any Mind took into consideration that their orders to destroy us was not the play. No infinitude of scenarios were played out, no doubt or second thought occured. Yet when Asher Mir went to the pyramidium and stood against the darkness the vex eventually recalculated and let him pass. Do the vex even understand they are being manipulated by the taken? Do they care? Do they understand any of their interactions with the various species they encounter?
