Kawasaki KZ1000 Vs Honda CB750 - Vintage Motorcycle Battle!

  • Was bigger better in the class of 1979? In this fun vintage motorcycle comparison I am looking at and riding Honda's 1979 CB750K and Kawasaki's 1979 KZ1000 Shaft. Though similar on paper, these two 4-cylinder motorcycles are strikingly different in feel. Ride along as we explore the traditional argument of which makes a better street bike - a 1000cc machine or 750cc!

    Between the two, i would take the Kawasaki , for sure, and i say that , having owned many Honda bikes, and still do. Shaft drive, bigger engine, better styling on the Kaw.

    At first, I decided I was not going to watch this since the bikes are so different. But after watching it, I think it is one of your best comparison videos! The reason the handlebars feel farther removed on the Honda is likely because the peg position, which force a more acute angle between legs and torso.
    As to the gearbox - these where infamous for dropping out of 2nd gear in particular under load. My CB1100F had basically the same engine, and it loved to drop out of 2nd under full throttle when the tacho hit 9k rpm. The needle then swung immediately to point straight south. To this day I am stunned it did not disintegrate, as it must have hit at least 12000rpm!

    Just picked up a 1979 CB 750K, 2 owners, 6500 miles. Enjoyed the video. My only disappointment so far is the gear range. Seems like it was set low on the 5th to make Jimmy Carter happy and 55 mph make sense. Appreciate any thoughts, keep bikin!

      @jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Right on! All bikes of this era suffered from 55 mph gearing. You can easily go up one tooth on the front sprocket for longer legs on the highway. Cheers!

      @@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Hey Jon, years ago I serviced, a faded green one of these, I remember that I had to loosen the Kerker, possably Jardane 4>1 pipe to drop the oil filter and the coils where cracked. Anyway,
      just like everyone else, I only have so much $, space, skill and time, the thing is , the bike is about 10 blocks from me. last year he said he would sell it to me for $1000, I like to think I`ll own it one day, but money is tight and it seems like there is always a more "exciting" bike for me to pounce on, when I have a little,(I currently have two other deals going around in my head). I always assume it will be their, it probably hasn`t been run in 10 years has been stored in a unheated garage. I know only I can determan its priority, what do you think? Thamk you!

      @jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538  ปีที่แล้ว

      @steven eichele I assume you're talking about the KZ1000? Right now, all the KZ1000s are climbing in value. Before buying, make a real list of what you know it will need and price those items out. Paint alone can cost over $1000. You may be better off buying a nicer one for $2000 or $2500 that needs less. It's always a gamble on vintage bikes. For me, if I'm not super excited to get a bike initially, I would be more prone to losing interest over time. Good luck in your search!

    It’s not intimidating I went from a kh250 Kawasaki too the Z1000st no problem as it can be very gentle, it’s safer than the 250 I had.

      Good point! The KZ has great brakes. It's smooth and comfortable. And, as long as you keep the pace to a reasonable level, it handles well. But, there are lighter, better-handling options out there when the pace pucks up. The weight can be intimidating while sport riding in the corners. Just my opinion.

    It looks like the CB has more character and is a more fun ride. I did know a guy once who had a kz1000 which was tuned up. it would redline in every gear within a few seconds and was easily as quick as a the GPZ900, suprisingly similar the way the engine performed. Probably the GPZ engine was based on the same basic powerplant. A very fast shaft drive bike, completely different from this one here, all Mr Jekyll and no Mr Hyde!

    • @jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
      @jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well put. My 1981 KZ1000 CSR is a beast with just a pipe and minor tune - completely different feel to the KZ1000 Shaft in this video. Even though they're both air-cooled, 1000 cc bikes, they have completely different motors. The GPZ900/Ninja 900 motor was another clean-sheet design with 16-valves, liquid-cooling and a 6-speed.
      I just picked up an Eliminator ZL900 with the GPZ900/Ninja 900 motor and shaft drive and will be doing some comparison videos with other early 1980's muscle cruisers. I also just picked up two late 1970's KZ1000 chain-drive project bikes so stay tuned!

      @@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Great looking forward to it. One of the things which I like about your channel is that you drive the bikes with gusto. I started riding bikes back in 1989 and I remember seeing local guys racing each other in late 70's /early 80's big fours. These guys drove these bikes like sports bikes. These days most channels whcih feature old bikes drive them as if they are museum pieces and its easy to forget that these bikes were sports bikes and by the standards of te day they were revvy.
      Also most retro bikes miss out on the sporty feel, they have similar power outputs but often they are far smoother and kind of boring, I feel the engineers who design modern retrobikes don't take the time out to ride the old ones. When we ride these old bikes we can feel thier pedigree, they have a sporty feel and its the feel of a big four chomping at the bit which is impressive.
      Also far more character than many modern sports bikes which have mind blowing performance but often they are awkward to drive and need to be ridden at illegal speeds to get any excitement out of them!
