I have an all original 1978 KZ1000 LTD Unlimited with 900 miles on it that was my fathers. He even bought an extra engine for it back in the day. Its in perfect condition and I ride it every now and then. Beautiful motorcycle and a great part of motorcycle history.

Thank you for riding this beautiful KZ1000...man, memories of my ride from Gila Bend, AZ to Victorville, CA with my girlfriend on a brand new '77 KZ1000, dark green with chrome wire spokes cruisin' along the Salton Sea...such a cool time of my life. The weather was perfect at the start but eventually turned into rain then snow through the El Cajon Pass at 5000 feet elevation. My mom wrapped my girlfriend in an Army blanket then placed a large garbage bag over her like a poncho for the return trip. I wore a light jacket, no gloves and froze my ass off but man, what a thrill of a ride.

Growing up, my dad had a 78 KZ650SR. Several years after getting my m/c license, I found a 79 KZ650SR on eBay for ... cheap. It has needed some TLC over the past few years, but right now it's running great and I love taking it for a spin! Those old bikes are a lot of fun. I still want a new Z900RS though, but even used ones are asking close-to-new money. If you ever get a "root beer" 2018 or 2019 Z900RS, let me know!

One thing I did notice when Sean was riding it ( I put this down to his young age lol ) is he changed gears like you would on a newer bike. With bikes like that and the 750/4 Honda with a Yoshimira kit in it, you snapped through the gears. This way you maintained the power band. Speaking from the 900, in 1974 there was a movie made here in Australia called Stone. In the start of the movie there was scene of a funeral. There were 40+ new Kwaka 9’s with the bikini fairing riding down the Carlisle expressway north of Sydney.

I got a real nice 75’ Z1b pretty much in stock form. Gotta have the ubiquitous 4/1 exhaust header. As for a comparison of a modern 600cc Sportbike is a full second quicker in a quarter mile. I know I got a ZX6R and a Z1 in the garage. A stock ZX6R will run an 11.2 @ 126mph and the Z1 a 12.3 @ 112mph. I’ve had my Z1b to a “speedo indicated” 145mph. The ZX6R to an indicated 172. Clearly no comparison to a modern sport bike.
Which one would I be willing to sell.....well it ain’t the Z1. A pristine first year unrestored Z1 can go for as much as $23,000. A bike like mine in nice shape $10-12000. Beside the old Z1 turns heads at everywhere I go. People really love and appreciate these old Kawasaki bikes. Kinda like a 69’ Camaro. 😎
I know it wasn’t yours to thrash on, but you were no where near the power band. Get that thing up in revs and it will fly.

Back in good old 1978 my 7th grade math teacher was a bike nut. Motocross on the weekends showing up one week with a broken arm. Hit a tree mid flight over a mogul. Showed up one morning with a large abrasion under his chin. Asked him if he cut himself shaving. He laughed and said his bike got away from him doing a wheelie in front of his home. That bike was a gorgeous light green KZ1000 with Kanji under the KZ1000 plaque. We all watched him do a wheelie one time during one of our school football games. You come off as very intelligent in your videos which I enjoy watching. I just bought my first bike, its a 1985 Honda Shadow 1100. A little more than 13,000 miles on it. It is cherry. Your channel is very interesting and has given me helpful pointers. Thank you.

About 15 years ago I stumbled over a 1975 Suzuki GT 550, three cylinder two stroke. After about two years, I sold it because I couldn't afford to get there. I absolutely hated it because I wanted to ride that thing, but thankfully I was able to sell it to a dude with money and know-how. He got it running and riding in short order. The hardest part had been done by me.... Taking off nearly every nut and bolt on the entire thing and polishing them.

I worked in a motorcycle shop and I remember specifically looking up the old Kawasaki Z1. The Z1900 was 81hp. And the KZ1000, must have more than that?

    My first bike was a '75 KH 550 or 600, I think.
    3 cylinder, 2 stroke.
The tach left an impression in my forehead on my first ride!

Beautiful! I remember these well. Too well! I was a Honda guy back then. I experienced watching the tail light of these bikes get smaller at a rapid rate when I met one at a light. Frustrating!

I started my riding on a Honda CB-450. Had plenty of power, for the time. A friend of mine, club bum, Harley rider. Took mine for a 15 minute ride. Came back excited about how quick it was. He even bought me a beer. :-O

Dude....those gauges take me back to my teen years. My brother had a 70's KZ900, I had an 81 CB750C.
Loved that cruiser style and smooth 4cyl power. Might have to get one again....

    • @MassiveTrackHunter

Might want to tip the owner off. At the end of your video when you were moderately accelerating, there was either a lot of predetonation, or the cam chain is loose as heck and chewing against the block. Either one of those will be expensive if left unchecked. Awesome to see a great old Kaw kept out of the scrapyard.

My first non-moped was an 82 KZ 750...bought it in summer of 85 when I turned 17. Nearly crashed on test drive. (How hard can a 45hp upgrade and this clutch-thingy be?) Couple years ago found an identical year and model barn special with only 3250 miles on it. Paid about the same as the original at $1150. Cleaned tank and petcock, replumbed vacuum lines, new battery and oil and she runs just fine. Every thing even works. Leaky fork seals, touch of valve clatter, and a low rpm soft spot barely distract from the nostalgiagasms.

i took a late 70s kz900 for a test drive back in the 90s and fell in love with it immediately.. i tried to hold out to buy it 100 bucks cheaper but the guy sold it to someone else.. i will always regret not paying the extra 100.. after telling a friend about the bike, he said it was worth 15k in pieces and he offered me 5k if i could get it.. when i went back, he had already sold it for $200 to someone else.. i never checked into the value, but i shoulda bought it just cuz it was such s cool bike..

I had a fantastic KZ1000! The thing had been bored Port polished three and a half inch stretch in the rear set up as a drag bike! We threw on a headlight side mount for tag with cats eye brake light no blinkers or Speedo just a tachometer. just enough to get it tagged. Super wild bike... wish I hadn't Let It Go.
