Within Temptation is just a MONSTER of a band-ironic, since vocalist Sharon den Adel is as close to angelic as a human voice is capable of. They started in 1996 with one doom metal demo album before finding their niche in symphonic metal and quickly becoming one of the biggest names in the budding genre, along with others like Nightwish and Lacuna Coil. But they are a group that is always pushing towards the next thing, exploring and changing their sound so that the music can reflect who they are and where they’re at now. One genre simply cannot contain them. And aside from their versatility and Sharon’s uniquely pure, powerful vocals, they are very well known for their history of collaboration with other artists! They always take a very humble approach to their music, and if they write a song that feels like it needs something else, they find a person who can provide that. They’ve worked with rapper Xzibit (And We Run), Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum (Whole World is Watching), Tarja Turunen (Paradise), and Howard Jones (Dangerous), in addition to Jacoby Shaddix who was mentioned (The Reckoning). Sharon has also been featured by MANY artists both within the metal genre (After Forever, Delain, Aryeon, Avantasia, and more) and outside of it. Her most recent collab was with Asking Alexandria (Faded Out)! She even has a solo indie pop album under the name My Indigo. A serious powerhouse of an artist, and all the more impressive because she’s one of the few in the genre who isn’t classically trained. They’re also touring with Evanescence later this year, and there’s no doubt that having her and Amy Lee on the same stage is going to be the combination of a lifetime. Lyrically, Within Temptation is very known for messages about both inner conflict and societal critique, with many of their songs like this one themed around being strong in your own identity even if others want to shoot you down for it. Many of their earlier works also draw inspiration from literature and fantasy. Sharon, her long-term partner and the band’s former guitarist Robert Westerholt, and their producer Daniel Gibson write all the band’s songs. There’s a huge and wonderfully diverse discography for you to explore with this group, but the most important thing you should know for now is that their newest single Don’t Pray For Me just came out yesterday! Music video drops next Wednesday ;)
I actually tried him out on "Dangerous" with Howard Jones a few weeks after this stream, and it's just not in Josh's stylistic wheelhouse. Which I understand....there are plenty of really popular, _really_ talented bands out there that I've never personally enjoyed listening to (I still cringe at most Led Zeppelin tracks, although that's more due to a teenage dose of acid and "Kashmir" being left on single track repeat for 6 hours 😂).
This is gonna be a long comment, apologies in advance. 😁 First of all, *this* is exactly why reaction videos in general are so popular: seeing that joy and amazement on somebody's face as they come to love something you're already a fan of. Yeah, and also as an easy, one-stop source for new music of your own & for insights you might not have had, but yeah...that look was worth every dollar I've ever donated on stream. 👍 Within Temptation are *GIANTS* in the symphonic/gothic metal subgenres. I mean, like Metallica is to thrash or Korn is to nu metal; *THAT* big. The band formed in 1996 and really started to gain international acclaim in 2001. They also have a long and storied history of collaborations that dip into many other genres of music, including such artists as Howard Jones, Tarja (from Nightwish), the rapper Xzibit, and of course Jacoby Shaddix. This song is definitely their most metalcore-sounding track to date, and surprisingly they had already written the song in its entirety _before_ they reached out to Annisokay to be a part of it. WT's lead singer, Sharon den Adel, is entirely self taught--she's never had a formal vocal lesson. There have been a *lot* of great female vocalists in metal over the years, but she's my favorite. Although this was not a live performance, you were sort of right--this video is taken from a VR concert they released online in the summer of 2021. In fact, this music video was a teaser released prior to the actual concert being dropped, which is the reason for some of the less-than-impressive CGI effects in it. They truly were pushing the edge technologically in creating that VR show with a total runtime just over an hour and splicing all of the various musicians involved into their virtual environment, and with this song being released before the final product was ready to go I'm going on the assumption that things like the incessant lights flashing across the screen were added to cover up some imperfections in the video of the band members themselves. This segment as it appeared in the concert had far less of those effects over it. This is indeed an incredible composition, and the recording and especially the mixing on it are pretty damn close to perfection in my not-at-all humble opinion. You're dead on about how well Sharon's and Christoph's voices play off each other here, and Rudi's harsh vocals toward the end take it to a whole different level.

So much info! Thank you!! I have since heard a few more tracks and I didn’t really gel, I’m more of a metalcore guy but appreciate their musicianship
glad to see Lacuna Coil listed here too, one of my absolute favorites

Very powerful song
Don´t sleep on Within Temptation buddy, they are quite established in their music.
Please more Within Temptation reactions!!!!!
It was during their livestream concert in 2021, but the actual song itself replaced the live audio, since it's an official music video.
Also, it's a combination of symphonic rock, alternative metal, post-hardcore and metalcore.
Yeah this song is amazing ❤️
SOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!
Great reaction 👍. Within temptation outstanding music 🎶 must listen
More interesting, I'd say, that WT had a track with Xzibit (or some other kinda rapper). "And we run".
Awesome!
Plz check out their Entertain You as well!
knowing annisokay but not within temptation is like putting cereal and milk before the bowl, makes no sense 🥺
