  • Halifax, West Yorkshire is our home town but I've never done a video of it until now.
    Thanks to the BBC drama Gentleman Jack, about Halifax-born industrialist, Anne Lister, this small Yorkshire town is back on the map!
    We see the following things:
    - Bankfield Museum
    - Halifax Town Centre
    - Victoria Theatre
    - Old Post Office
    - Lloyds Bank Building
    - Halifax Town Hall
    - Borough Market (Victorian-era covered market)
    - Halifax Minster (including the organ recital)
    - Piece Hall (old wool/cloth trading site)
    - Square Chapel
    - Halifax Gibbet
    - Halifax Slasher street!
    - The Three Pigeons (art deco pub)
    - Beacon Hill lookout point

    I used to live across the street from Bankfield museum. On one night, they had a robbery where a helicopter landed on the roof of the museum so we called the police and it was a big deal at the time. We could see the thieves taking paintings out up onto the roof. Crazy.. This was 30ish years ago now.

    I would of said the gibbet was Halifax’s greatest site as it’s where we got our bloody history predating the piece hall , dean clough, or the old post office, even the coffee house as it’s first use was 1286

    "Whats art Deco". You were stood next too one of 2 art deco building in Halifax Where MacDonald now is, is art deco. (there is also where Meca bingo was, I saw them in a photo from 1937)
    And you mentions the slasher but not the Yorkshire ripper, who killed someone on the Halifax moor, near lister lane. (It's really just playing fields),
    Oh, and that ALL the building's in Halifax were saved because the council was too skint to rip them down and replace them with 60's prefab crap, even the Piece Hall was only save from demolition by 1 vote!

    20 seconds into this 1902 film of Halifax ( th-cam.com/video/eIrfwChQkxQ/w-d-xo.html ) its shows a sprawling area of factories. Could you please, please, please tell me the location of this shot. I have spent hours on google maps trying to find it as wish to compare Halifax from 1902 with 2020.

    • @dunedinmcdiary5068
      @dunedinmcdiary5068 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Found it by using an old Halifax tram route map. Its Overton Road looking down on Old Lane. Just one empty old factory left from what was a valley full of factories, pouring out goods to go to the farthest points of the British Empire (as I can attest)

    • @JasonSmartTravel
      @JasonSmartTravel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you found it. I’d have had no idea.

    • @dunedinmcdiary5068
      @dunedinmcdiary5068 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasonSmartTravel Could not have done it without the old tram map. Just had to look for places where the tram line ran near a railway line, especially where there where curves in the railway line. Then it was a process of elimination. Would not have found it with google maps alone as the railway line and nearly all the factories shown in the 1902 movie are no longer there. Amazing what can be done on the internet in regards to researching a town 12,000 miles away, on which I was completely ignorant until two day ago!
      It is astonishing the changes that have occurred in that time. Imagine the people back then would have expected that Halifax in 100 years time would be even more industrialised, the complete opposite of what has actually happened. Anyway, a very interesting town with a very interesting history!
