Finally someone reacting to this Killing Voice! Hongki is one of the best singers in Korea, wish he and FTI got more recognition again

FT Island is a rock band that sings in both Korean and Japanese. Lee Hongki is their lead vocalist and he has quite the power vocal. Their music in Korean is more rock ballad as that's the style more popular which is what he sang in this killing voice. But their music is Japan is more hard rock and definitely some of my favourites. He started as a child actor at 10 and debuted in FT Island at 17. He has maintained his acting career along with singing as he still acts in musicals and dramas some of which are quite iconic in Korea.

Ft Island songs are very popular in Korea. Especially among men. All the songs he sang here except the last 4 songs became hit in Korea. And the most hit one is their debut song Love Sick.
Hongki's singing background is basicly coming from just singing live. Doing concerts over and over. He was already good when he debuted but doing concerts improved him a lot. And starting to doing musical theater helped him to develop his singing even more. His emotion delivery has always been impressive since he is 17. I think it's because he was an actor originally.
Also he is famous for having one of the most unique voice among male singers.

He is a child actor, a musical theater, a complete singer... his acting is fantastic, too. His kdrama modern farmer is hilarious and in Korean odyssey he made me cry. I saw him live in NY in 2015. I think he said he went from the airport to do this show, he was doing a tv show in Japan at the time. If I'm not mistaken.

He is also an actor so.... he actually started as a child actor before he has joined a team as vocalist. He still plays in kdramas and in musicals on stage.

If you haven't yet seen CNBlue's Killing Voice, you really need to. Their leader starred in a drama with Lee HongKi and they're super best friends. They guest sing for each other in concerts too. Their friendship is admirable.

F.T. Island (Five Treasure Island) used to be a 5 member Kpop Rock band under FNC Entertainment. They debuted in 2007 -- the first song you heard HongKi perform was "Love Sick", which was their debut song -- and they are still active today. However, 2 members left the group in 2019, so they currently only have 3 members.
HongKi, the main vocalist of F.T. Island, is known for having one of the best rock vocals in the industry. He debuted when he was only 16 years old, and before that he was a child actor since the age of about 10, so he has been in the business for a very long time. He is known for his powerful vocals and for having a vocal range that is out of this world. Fun fact: he is also known for his nail art and for the fact that he has a regular appointment at the nail salon, so his nail designs are always changing.
Current members: Lee HongKi is the main vocal, Choi Minhwan is the drummer and Lee Jaejin is the bass guitarist. Former members Song Seunghyun and Choi Jonghoon were the guitar players. (When F.T. Island had their comeback in 2021 with their song "Unthinkable" and held a mini concert, etc. they used session guitarists to make up for the missing guitar players in their songs.)
Although K-bands are different than a traditional Kpop group, I still consider bands like F.T. Island to be part of Kpop, because they are under a Kpop company.
You should check out some of F.T. Island's MVs to see their wide range of styles and to experience them as a full band. And you definitely need to see some of their live performances. F.T. Island live is unlike anything you have ever experienced.
Also, if you like bands, you should discover some other bands such as TraxX, which was SM Entertainment's band. Trax debuted with SM in 2004 and they were under SM until they disbanded in 2019. Trax originally was a 4 member band. However, 2 of the members left the band in 2007 and Trax became a duo band. And then in 2018 they rebranded themselves and became a EDM band by adding DJ GinJo to the band. Although, they only had one comeback as an EDM band. Fun fact: Trax was the reason Chanyeol from EXO decided to audition for SM because he originally wanted to be a member of a rock band. (Which is one reason why he plays so many instruments.)
Or, CNBlue (Code Name Blue) who are currently a 3 member band also under FNC Entertainment, who like F.T. Island, are also super famous in Japan. And, as you may know, Day6 who is under JYP Entertainment.
Each of the mainstream Kpop bands fill their own niche. For example, Day6 is more of a pop band, CNBlue is a classic singer/songwriter band, F.T. Island is more of a Rock band and TraxX was one of the first in the industry, so they have covered a lot of different genres over the years. But just like all Kpop groups, they all cover many different styles of music with their songs -- from ballad to pop to traditional rock, etc.

I'll subscribe just for future FTIsland videos. You really should see some of their live performances! They are so good. They are a rock band but because rock isn't super popular in Korea they do tend to release a lot of ballads for the general population which is what made them popular. The entire "Where's the Truth" album is a banger and is one of my favorite releases.

Thank you Roscoe for finally reacting to FT Island again. Lee Hong Gi is one of the best vocal out there, and FT Island has touched various kind of genre, though rock has always been their palette. I like how he also carries the song like how he usually perform on stage here, but that does not do the justice for the facts that he actually singing most most of those parts, including the ones you hear on the playback
He’s a seasoned performer, aside of his good vocal, I suggest you check out other FT Island full song videos, and also live videos where he perform with the band and audience as well, then you’ll see the wholesomeness of ‘em. Trust you gotta enjoy it too 😊😊

I saw FT Island in NYC in 2015, and at that concert they said that they were finally going to start making music that they wanted, and not what the company wanted. As you noticed, PRAY is so different from their older stuff. I think I cried when PRAY came out, knowing they were finally doing music they wanted and esp. being a fan for so long. Also if you look at their discography, 2015 is when they started to write/produce most if not all of their own music :)

  • @hanakimi4144

Hongki is one of the best singers, his voice is really unique and distinctive, his vocal power is no joke, in fact he sounds much better live in his concerts, I think here you can see him a little uncomfortable, because he is a Showman, the boy spends his time running and jumping on stage while singing and interacting with his fans (his vocal control is insane), he's not used to being still with a pedestal microphone lol... Plus I think he felt a little pressured because he normally doesn't sing many of the songs previous to "Pray."
Hongki began his career as an actor since he was a child, he is also an Musical Actor, he has his clothing and jewelry brand, he has his own studio where he produces his music, he composes, in fact many of the songs of FTISLAND are composed by him, He also has a book on nail design lol the boy is multifaceted and multitalented....
By the way FTISLAND actually has a song that was used for the opening of the anime Ozuma, the song is Neverland.
Hongki also sings several Kdramas OSTs, such as "I'm Saying" by The Heirs.
I'm so passionate about FTISLAND that I could keep talking about them, but I'll leave it here for now because their career and discography is so long that it would take me a lifetime😅😅

Ft are so underappreciated and it’s sad. People need to show them more love since they are the first kpop band in kpop and made bands in kpop relevant. Thank you so much on behalf of Primadona. ❤️

Thank you for reacting to this! FTisland really do not get enough attention. Their live performances are always superior to their recorded versions, so if you intend to react to them more, I recommend finding their lives😊
They do have some great MV's though. When you do check out the MV for "Take me now", you should combine it with a reaction to "Pray"'s MV as well. Those two are the title tracks of two consecutive albums (Pray from I will in 2015 and Take me now from where's the truth...? in 2016). Both the MV's are full of symbolism, and though they are separate, take me now picks up a lot of the themes from Pray.
Those are very important songs and albums for FTisland, as they prior to this had been obliged to only do the songs their company provided them with in Korea. After a longer dispute with FNC about style and genre, where they only were active in Japan, they came back with new contracts that allowed them artistic freedom. These two albums (their 5th and 6th) were the first where they not only wrote all the songs, but also participated in everything from production to MVs etc.

The 2nd song with the flickering lights background is because of the title of the song I believe. Chondung = Thunder.
Also I'm kinda on board with you on his cardigan but Hongki is notorious for his crazy fashion sense so it could also make sense if he himself tear it up before going on camera XD

I am so happy that you reacted to Ft. Island. They need more recognition than they get.
They were the first K-Band I listened to. Before getting into K-Pop, I listened to alternative music. (Still do). I wanted to know if there were any groups that played their own instruments. So I did a Google search, and it gave me a website that had a bunch of bands listed. Their song Take Me Now was linked, so I clicked on it and immediately fell in love with them. Because they were the type of music I had been longing for.

Hongki never truly learned how to sing, he just really like to sing in caraoke, he started as child actor, then he debuted in ftisland as lead vocalist in 2007, they was like first krock band(if i remeber correctly 😅) meanwhile still continued to act in kdramas, also began a solo career and make bunch of ost's and albums, he struggles to combine acting and his music career so for some time he almost give up on acting, but then he finds the perfect match for himself-musicals! Honki now often play in them, and let me say you, he is soooo good in this, you need to see his performance for Harlan county musical, there is a video with it on youtube. Also you can just type Lee Hongki musical on youtube's search tab and it give you a bunch of videos from his performances, it's really worth watching💛

FT Island are not the 1st rock band in Korea. Korea had many rock bands before them. But they're the first "idol" band.
Although Hongki didn't learn singing properly before his debut he took many vocal lessons later. And now, he's giving vocal lessons to his juniors sometimes.

I think they had a vocal coach as a group, cause they was like teenagers and need to learn how to use their voices properly, but before ftisland, Hongki never seriously learn how sing, just hang out in caraoke too much😆 but when he become a part of ftisland he take it really seriously and work hard to become such incredible singer as he is now💛
