The newly released "Dark Crystal: Bestiary" shows that skekNa has been a thorn in the Emperor's side for centuries. Unlike skekShod, who kept quiet after foolishly questioning skekSo's competence, skekNa basically trolled the Emperor throughout the Age of Division by repeatedly putting the fragile alliance with the Gelflings at risk with random acts of casual brutality. SkekSo eventually got tired of this sh*t and sliced one of his hands off. This didn't appear to deter him one bit, thus prompting the Emperor to have one of his eyes torn out. It would appear then that skekNa was the closest thing to a sociopath in the Dark Crystal universe, being totally incapable of following rules and committing repeat offences despite multiple punishments. Nevertheless, he did have the courage of his convictions, unlike the Treasurer. He was, in a sense, a darker version of skekGra. SkekGra opposed skekSo because he believed they should act more like their urSkek forbears. SkekNa opposed skekSo because he believed that he just wasn't "skeksy" enough.
Ah very interesting. As the original puppeteer for Skekna (or the Slavemaster as he was called during filming), I found him scary but for other reasons, lol! Having to perform a heavy animatronic creature on film when we were literally inventing animatronic puppetry. Happy memories though.

Well, before the events of Age of Resistance, things are generally fairly civilized in the Castle, so SkekNa wouldn't really have much of an outlet for his malice and cruelty. Now, once the Garthem war gets going on the other hand, he's got the podling slaves and captured Gelflings to torture and brutalize and he couldn't happier (Assuming he has the emotional capacity to even *BE* happy)
I find it interesting that all of skekUng's political allies were cripples. I guess that is what distinguishes him from his predecessor skekVar, who simply dismissed Skeksis with disabilities as weaklings.

If I have to guess the reason why SkekUng choose to make an alliance with the Skesis who are mistreated the most is that he might have been in the same position. Since he’s a way more intelligent then SkekVar, it’s easy to say he saw the potential on how ruthless the weaker Skesis can be. This could be the reason why he choose to make an alliance with the ones who are not in SkekSo’s favor, since he assumed early on that their support alone would be vital in his bid to become the next emperor.

Maybe that's why the other, more fancily dressed and eloquent Skeksis (Sil and Zok) underestimated him before his ascension as emperor. Or perhaps they saw him as tainted by his association with the rejects of the Skeksis hierarchy. Either way, skekUng's feud with skekSil and skekZok can be seen as a form of class war.

The Scientist was a genius and The Slavemaster was a brilliant spy that could gather information, even skekUng himself saw his most valuable tool to be his strategic instead of his great physical abilities. Then again when you have an army of hulking Frankenstein crab golems brawn isn't in short supply

The counterpart relation between UrNol and SkekNa is perhaps the most interesting, given that their roles have absolutely nothing to do with each other, opposite or otherwise. 3:28 to 3:43 They are literally the only pair with this as the case. All the other pairs are either similar or very but fittingly opposite. The best examples are UrMa the Peacemaker with SkekVar the General and UrIm the Healer with SkekUng the Garthim Master. These two pairs are the most fittingly opposite. Another interesting thing about UrNol and SkekNa is that UrNol wears an eyepatch, but seems to have nothing noticeably wrong with his hands. Perhaps SkekNa only wore the metal claw to scare others.
I bet we can get some really dark and cool stuff for skekNa in Netflix's second season of The Dark Crystal. In fact, I've already imagined what could be the basic outline for his story: he loses his hand in a failed attempt to crush a slave rebellion somewhere, and also loses his eye via peeper beetle as punishment for this failure. SkekTek develops the metal claw to replace it, but skekNa turns down the offer for a device to function as a new eye, perhaps sensing skekTek's increasing dementedness and refusing to let his body be experimented on further.
He’s the Skeksis along with SkekUng and SkekSa I look forward the most to seeing. He’s got a very interesting design that’s more macabre and vicious than the others. I’m hoping I get to see how personality more in season 2.
Even now that we have a mariner skeksis I’m hard pressed to see the slave master as a pirate because of that damn hook and eye patch. It seems his lack of self filtering has left him punished quite a lot. I wonder what his job was before the gelfling war occurred sense he didn’t really seem like a good figure head. I imagine if they had gone more into chamberlains plan of maintaining the gelfling population for a steady supply of essence skeksa would have been essential for keeping towns in check as livestock.
I always wondered about the seeming disconnect between SkekNa and his urRu. Counterpart. I remember in the original movie his voice seeming changed from the first scene where he was yelling at the podlings to pull the big stone up for Trial by Stone and then when the scene cut and he was yelling something like “Pull harder whoa!”@&. I don’t think it was unintentional. Gross creature....rotten.
So I'm not the only one who noticed SkekNa's voice change from high, in his first demanding of the slaves, to deeper to get them to pull harder... ... I mean, from a recording standpoint, they might have forgotten to record the VA's voice into the second part... but what if the the Hensons and the Frouds used that little fudge-up, rolled with it, and maybe explained it as some mental rot going in Na's mind? Perhaps personality disassociation/multiple (but subtle) personalities... a "false face" he puts on to instill calm, then take it off for full shock?
@@jaysonklein6018 His voice is more consistent in the original workprint, where the Skeksis speak their own language. I'm guessing the first line in the theatrical cut was done by Brian Muehl, while the second was by David Buck (his official voice actor)
Well hopefully the next season will give us a better outlook of him and we'll see what he was before labeled slave master because obviously there are no slaves in AOR. So he must of had a different title.

I was disappointed that SkekNa was absent from Age of Resistance. (Other than being mentioned) But the other Skeksis probably didn't need him yet.

I would assume not. Because they were made whole again completely, so Thra would have restored them before they departed.
