This started out as a great instructional video, but the constant editing during the shifter housing disassembly and reassembly made me nearly nauseas. Other than that, a good video but not as useful as it could be if I was going to be doing this project - this is coming from someone who's already done the install, so I could keep up, but it was tough to keep up. Installation of the shifter plate does not need the transmission carrier to be dropped. Make it easier for sure. Also, easier to push the small roll pin out of the shifter plate first, since it's made up of 2 roll pins. The OEM shift bushing can easily be pushed out using one of your larger punches. I did not want to damage mine using needle nose pliers, so I have the option to return it to OEM if I choose. I appreciate you measuring the shifter throws. Thanks for the video.
@@michaelking42 thanks for your comment. This was mainly a fun little review video since there are so many install videos out there already but I ended up showing the install anyways. I appreciate your notes though! Hope you like the other videos on my channel :)
@ Hey brother thanks for replying! I wasn't trying to throw shade your way, and did enjoy the video. Your girl was hilarious by the way and I think she stole the show!
I did this exact thing on my 2016 wrx and honestly i had the worst time getting into first gear. Sometimes it wouldn’t even budge in. Specially during heavy shifting in and out of first gear. Never figured out why it would do that.
ya ive had a couple times where i couldnt get into first at all. also hear more transmission noise and gear whine (yuck). i will be reverting my car back the stock sti short throw shifter assembly. what a waste
Why do most of these video's never mention the fact that unless you'r using the Subaru short shifter cover plate that sits on the underside of the assembly, the short shifter rubs on the cover and it causes all kinds of shifter problems. Most likely you will need to "massage" a dish into the cover to fix the issue. Try removing the cover and see if there's any witness marks on it from where the shifter cable attachment has been rubbing.
@@thebagdersarse5824 I actually saw someone say this in their install (he ended up denting his cover for clearance) it is an issue sometimes but luckily not for me
Wait, are you talking about the cover that was removed to accommodate the shift plate? Or the rectangular plate that is bolted back up, and directly to the base of the gear shift lever? I ask as I have a small issue with my install where the shifter does not want to return to the center position of its own accord, when placed in neutral; I have to use a small amount of effort to put it back in its resting position. I've been mentally diagnosing that maybe the two bolts that hold the plastic housing with the ball joint are too tight, but is it that metal plate?
@@michaelking42 he is referring to the metal plate that you put back to cover the assembly, not the shifter plate. Some people are rubbing it when shifting so if your shifter is getting stuck it may be the same issue. I would remove the metal cover to see if you have been rubbing - if you are just bend it or hammer it for some clearance
@@spamsubie Thank you brother! I was thinking I had overtorqued the ball joint, or not lubed it well enough. Your video brought me to that comment which threw a new possibility at me. When I get home next week I'm gonna pull the plate and look for witness marks, then most likely gonna pound it hard to create a clearance. Did they change something since the release? My VB is a 2024 premium model; I don't think that would make a difference but could add to the conversation. Thanks again mate.
Thank God I bought a BRZ. My Billitworx short throw install was a breeze compared to this major surgery. Glad the final result was worth it for you.
I did just the Cobb shift plate and there was a pretty big difference in the throws. Can’t imagine a short shifter on top of that!
I about lost my mind filming this install video and now I've had to do it twice! haha
@@KevinVo LMFAO it was a struggle i've done it twice as well 😂
Had the whole billetworkz kit on the car, but just pulled the trigger on the darkmatterx direct shifter. Its a cable delete shifter
Don't even have this car, but your video makes me want one 😂. Appreciate the video 🎉
Dude that was alot of Pins for me! 😂🤣 So Glad Jane was there to help you tho! 🥰 Shifter looks like it feels Sick-AF 😈
Doing this install while filming was a good amount of work LOL
I have the blue vb with bronze gramlights and pink licence plate was so happy you got a vb!

Possibly something to do with the shifter under cover fowling the shifter cable. See my response 🙂

@ I've seen on some videos people were having the issues and other not having an issue. Luckily no issue for me, I have a 2024 TR too
i dont prefer short shifter you get confused cant know if youre in 5th or 3rd , its so stiff too
On the VBs you do have a gear indicator, which is nice.
Gotta love how easy subaru makes it to take everything apart
Not an accurate comparo when the lever height is different
Your helper play too much lol 😅
I think she played good. She's a keeper.
@spamsubie waiting for next vlog zzzzp
