  • This pickled coleslaw recipe is perfect for beginner Canners. Water-bath canning is less intimidating and you only need a small amount of produce to produce several pints of this shelf stable coleslaw mix. Below is the recipe I followed.

Hmmpf. Learn something new every day. Super thanks for your great work! Ok, been doing my due diligent research to see how everyone packs coleslaw...which never occurred to us. Each year I plant a dozen cabbages to get from one to a half dozen, depending. On overage years it's way more than we can use. Times being like they are no mas with that! So, on top of everything else you just introduced me to pickle crisp. Our solution to date is to refrigerate per Klaussen, which works very well. Just didn't know about the crispy stuff. Just ordered Hoosier Hill Farm Pickle Fresh granules, 1.5 lb Jar from Amazon which is way cheaper. We kinda got away from pickles...but now onto cabbage, the crunch is class. Again, super thankees! Liked and subscribed! Woof!

Looks good Rachael I might have to give this a try. My cucumbers aren’t doing that awesome either. I picked one full grown but poorly pollinated cuke this morning. Did see a few bees around. Had a storm go threw last night that toppled the tomatoes I have in containers right on top of my cucumber plants. Everybody seemed to be ok thankfully. I’m hoping to get my cucumber trellis put up this weekend. Need to have my kids give me a hand with that.

Last year I didn’t get to give my cucumbers a trellis and they happily produced as they meandered on the ground. Had my best season ever. Maybe you don’t have the room but I was bringing in 3 or 4 cukes every day. With only 6 plants and I actually had a cucumber happy problem. Made cucumber everything. This year I didn’t plant them!

Like gmo’s, in the same range. It can cause hart failures, kidney failures, vomating and nausea. We avoid it for that reason. Just want to share it in case you did not know...

This is delicious, I made it last week (made 5 pints) and couldn’t wait to try it. I was wondering if it would be alright to cut the sugar down so its not so sweet. That way I would have a variety and will be making this again.

Can't wait to try my hand at canning. Girl, is that a glass cutting board? You're killing your knives. Love all your videos! Side note, since I"m starting from scratch, do you prefer wide mouth or regular jars?

Oops don't tell Todd! I'll say this about jars, when I buy new I tend to buy more wide mouth than regular mouth. Just more versatile. But I use up all my regular mouth jars just as well

Is the 1/8 top pretty standard for a pint? I'm going to be canning banana peppers this weekend. I do like the brine sweet on my banana peers:)

If you do red cabbage with pickled beet spices and brine that might be cool.

The recipe she linked to called for rubbing salt into the cabbage and letting it set then rinse. She didn't mention this step. Did you salt soak your cabbage?

    • @maryjahnke

@@leaannebrummett9159 I very lightly salted the cabbage. I’m not one to use at all. Let sit for awhile and then raised real good

I managed to grow only 1 red cabbage over winter here in Melbourne Australia but I'm going to give your recipe a go. I don't think that I will be able to get any pickle crisp but I was wondering if you added the salt to the brine that the recipe called for?

A friend of mine got sick of the mess canning made in her kitchen, so she set up shop in her garage and used a propane burner and canned away. If you, or friends/neighbors have a hot plate or two, maybe you can MacGyver something. This might get SOME of your canning plans accomplished until you find a stove replacement.

This looks so good. In El Salvador, we have what's called curtido, which I wonder if it could be canned as well. It's basically the same as this recipe but it also has onions and oregano. Would these ingredients make the recipe be ok to include? Is this a ball recipe?
