Very interesting video, thanks for making it, but there's one thing that I wonder. What people do a lot these days is that they also side-chain the kick, because volume shaping tools have become so popular and easy to use. If the audio is dead when the bass hits, there can be no phase cancellation. Even note relationship should not matter as far as mixing a track goes albeit it might sound musically bad in some cases (with a long kick tail). Both kick and bass amplitude envelopes sit in the track timeline without any intersection.
Hi there and thank you for your comment!...The video refers to some specific cases of kick and bass combination and obviously not all...There are any scenarios and ways to avoid the problems that arise by a kick and bass overlap. @@SounDirectiveSamples I still see that there are some phasing issues in the last 2 waves of my kick /Bass, what plug in would you recommend for phase aligment?
This tutorial tells the truth! I agree with the others, this is the best tutorial about Kick/Bass I've ever seen. Is this methode aplicable to other genres!? thank you so much for the lesson.
Jake Wheeled thank so much for the comments!..yes the principal is the same to all genres....as long as in that genre the kick and bass collide one on to the the other.....
Thank you for the fast answer. I realise one thing, when you change the note in the bass (kick in A and the bass in A but suddently change to C for example) the lenght of the wave in the bass changes so the kick and the bass are no longer fitted together unless you return to A in the bass. So in this case whats good to do? Thank you so much!
Never realized you actually have a small part where kick and bass overlap. So the same would hold true for Hardtrance kicks right? Though they usually have 1/8th note kick, and then 1/8 note bass (instead of the three 1/16th). At least I always gave the bass an attack phase to merge the two sounds. So chances are you get some phase mismatch there. And your example of the 2Hz difference showed me how big of a difference that actually makes in the perceived sound. Thank you for this video. That was super useful!
Hi there and thanks for your comment !The overhaul approach of the kick design should be applicable to all kinds of kicks. As far as the specific kick bass pattern you describe (kick 1/8 + bass 1/8) then they should not have any area where one would overlap the other. In such a case the phases are not as important as in the case of overlapping waveforms. But in any other case where the kick overlaps the bass then the information of the video should apply.
Great invested Time here man! the only thing that is lacking in this video is the Compression of the Kick.but maybe i just missed that part! Or you dont use Compression on Your Kicks... Aboed u
hi there Broose and thank you for your comment!!...To answer your thoughts......the video is about the things you need to pay attention to when you design you kick (acording to my personal opinion)..it is not on how to mix kick and bass together.....and i would personally not compress my kick as an approach.....without that meaning that one cannot compress it if he/she so wishes....
yeah man... that video was more than good! i was just a lil disappointed because i thought i will see the Compressionhandeling in sounddesign from somebody who is making kicks days in and days out :)
@@SounDirectiveSamples my friend i don't know if you know this but you can adjust the nodes precisely with cmd on Mac, its much better than the zooms i think. i have a request, if a may, you can do a video of multi layering snare with phase analysis? thank you a lot

Hi there and thank you for your comment ! The approach and method shown in the video is of course not the only way to create a good kick...Its simply some aspects and tips for someone to consider during the design process.
Thanks !! How to phase align different frequencies ? Like kick in one note and a bass in a different note . Also how can we align leads n sequences same way with the kick and bass . How does this work ? Thanks !!!
hi there vivek ram and thanks for your comment!!phase allignment between kick and basse when in different notes can only happen partially....there is a few things you can do to work arround a kick and bass mis alignment....it all depends how far away the notes of kick and bass are...but in any case there will be a partial or complete phase cancellation....will try to create a video on the issue cause its a bit complex to explain in a comment...
@@SounDirectiveSamples Thank you for the response.. i have tried it and felt the same . it was only possible in a few places and with the help of some eq cuts and using the phase nob in the synth it could get better. also waiting for the video. thanks and good day !!!
This is an excellent tutorial, thanks for sharing the knowledge! I got a question: If only the lowest frequency points in the waveform define the tonality, why should we set all frequency nodes to the exact note frequency that they correspond? I would have thought because of this general rule, only the last 2 nodes or the lowest in frequency would have to be tuned to the exact note frequency. Hope to hear from you. Many thanks
Hi there Jo and thank for your question. In theory yes you could be right.Only the last 2 nodes that practically "collide" with the bass should be the ones that we should really pay attention to for obvious phase alignment issues. The previous nodes are usually higher in frequency and their "exact" placement should not really cause any issues or be audible. That doesnt mean though that we cannot have accuracy in our settings when its relatively easy to do.The exact accurate setting is a general approach that i personally have in all the steps of the production.I personally believe that you need to have this kind of (if i may say) "discipline" throughout all the stages of the production and not only be accurate selectively for example only when eq-ing or compressing etc.I think that people are either on one side of the line (being surgically accurate with everything) or the other(being a bit sloppy and making broad movements overhaul).Having said that though and always in response to your question,no it would not be audibly or technically wrong to have the higher nodes in a "not so accurate" frequency position. The lower you would get though in frequency the more audible noticeable it might appear to be .
@@SounDirectiveSamples Dude thank you so much. you explained it brilliantly and it does make a lot of sense! I do agree that when you have that level of discipline and precision in any art form or activity, only good things can happen. Again, many thanks for your response and for this video. This should be one of the first stops for anyone that wants to learn how to produce psy trance PROPERLY!
It is almost imposible to avoid phase cancelation or better said to get perfect k+b phase shift without using ozillos mega scope. I just use my ears as to make precise phase correction you must use your eyes and compare both frequency crests both together. Anyway thank you for this tutorial. Before this video it was very very very dificult to understand how you can make phase cancelation , but this tutorial is very graphic!!!!
Thanks for your comment Eduardo....!! Indeed it is very difficult to have perfect phase match without any visible means even though a trained ear can understand when the phases are almost perfect....oszillos is just one of the tools that can offer a separate view of the waveforms but its not the only one....you can also do it manually by exporting the kick and bass in audio and overlapping then in order to see how the phases correlate.....off course if you need to make any changes you will have to re export the audio and re- overlap till you get it right....another way also is to use other oscilloscopes that can show you the kick and bass together....by paying attention to the disturbance on the second half of the kick you can more or less make small corrections realtime ....
Sirius360 thank you ! at the moment i am producing a big tutorial video on all subjects of production which will be available on www.soundirective.com sometime in the first quarter of the new year.Since the bass is one of the most crutial subjects i am saving it for that tutorial ,but will very soon post another tutorial here...
Hi there and thank you for your comment !...here is what is how i usually treat the click layers...once my kick is complete and i am happy with it i go to the click 1...i listen to all the click one by one without modifying their parameters...just as they are...the ones that i think make the kick sound better in any way i not them down....once done i revisit the ones that i liked until i find the best one of all....during this selection i will play around with the pameteres of the click section to see if i can generate something even better ( pitck/starting point/phase etc)...if i do i keep it...if i dont i just use it raw with no modifications.....after that i go to the second section where i usually add a hat for extra transient that will help the kick cut through the mix better...same process....check them all...choose the best ones....revisit the chosen ones only with parameter tweaking...and keep the best....the whole approach is like that....you make the kick that you already like....you add a click layer...if it gets better you keep the layer...if not...you go back to the kick as a starting point....you then move to layer 2 (hat)...if it gets better keep it...if not go back to the click selection only...there is no really right or wrong here...nor you can only use 1 or 2 layers....just make sure that anything you do improves the kick.....always try a/b....before and after the layer to have a clear idea on what is added....hope that helps

Well, this is one of the best Kick Synthesis Tuts I've ever seen! And I've seen an awful lot.... 😅
Der Kritiker much appreciated!! thnx!
A very good tutorial, 👍 very well explained. Hopefully more tutorials will follow.
Thank you very much !
I would love to see a tutorial on your methods of sound design for bass in serum and how you use EQ and compression to get a clean bass note
Thnx for you comment Jason!...
It was super informative, super professional really really nice job. Thank you for sharing that with us, and keep up the good work.
Tijt Bass thank you for the kind words! much appreciated!
Wow what a fantastic tutorial.. I learned so much just then! Thank you so much dude! look forward to the next one :)
Daniel Russell Thank you very much Daniel!
loved this tut. would be great to know your decisions in time between nodes in amp and decision of notes in pitch. thank u excellent work
Thank you Diogo! Much appreciated!
@@SounDirectiveSamples my friend i don't know if you know this but you can adjust the nodes precisely with cmd on Mac, its much better than the zooms i think. i have a request, if a may, you can do a video of multi layering snare with phase analysis? thank you a lot
Diogo Ferreira hey again my friend....yes you are right...the newer versions of kick 2 have an exact node placement and you dont need to zoom in at all...nodes are exact...At the time of the video i had an older version of kick 2 and i believe this function was not available.....if it was then i appologise cause i was not aware of it..
@@SounDirectiveSamples all good =) jusr saying. sorry for the push but would be fisable the snare tutorial?
Diogo Ferreira As i just mentioned to another friends comment....i am currently working on a big production tutorial ,which will be ready and available from www.soundirective.com at some point in the new year..i know that there are plenty or crutial subjects but since all these will b covered in my extended tutorial i am for now, not releasing any relative videos.I will post something very soon though
This really opened my eyes!! awesome video! thnx!!
Thank you so much for the comment!
Thank You Very much bro 🙏🏻 It was very informative and now I now I got to know about phase alignment and cancellation
Akash K R V thank you !, much appreciated!
Hey thank u really much for this tutorial, the best kick tutorial I have ever watched, so informative and detailed... waiting for more!!!! Thanks once more ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Subscribed
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for your commnent!
To me it kind of sounded better without the node in the middle ..although not really as clinical as psytrance usually sounds.
Hi there and thank you for your comment ! The approach and method shown in the video is of course not the only way to create a good kick...Its simply some aspects and tips for someone to consider during the design process.
Amazing and eshaustive explanation, please make more tutorials! thank you :)
Mic Mide thank you very much !
This is magnificent work! Well done!
Thank you Bruno! Much appreciated!
Absolutely epic video man, very very much appreciate it!
Thank you mate!
Masterclass here
Thank you so much!
Mind-blown! Thanks
Thank you for your comment !
Will you do a similar tutorial but for the bass? That would be awesome!
@@SounDirectiveSamples awesome. I'm looking forward to it. You've got my sub
Sirius360 thank you very much!
Just added a subwoofer to my setup, please low cut the audio of your mic :) my room is shaking when you pop in the mic
Noted!
wow, thanks I finally Got it . Thank you :)
Welcome ,thank YOU!
How should the click 1 and click 2 tab be configured?
@SounDirectiveSamples thank you very much for answering me and for the help, it was really useful. Greetings from Mexico
