God this video really breaks my heart now that I have to sell my '83 Caprice. There is something so solid and friendly about the 305 Caprice, as GM sinks, its cars like this that will remind us of all that is right about Chevrolet. Why can't GM bring something cheap, rear wheel driven and reliable like the venerable Caprice 1978 - 1996? As long as you keep someting resembling oil in its pan, these engines will go on and on....
Last month I bought an 84 caprice classic sedan, beige, with a 305 v8, 4 barrel carb, and 4 speed automatic transmission. I love it, love it, love it, LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are a few minor things i need to do, like adjust the carb slightly, cause it uses a lot of gas to help it start up. Also it could use some touch up paint here and there, but an excellent car. 75,557 miles when i got it!!!!!!!! I need to post a video really soon.
@BobTheNailer92 thanks, and nice. the 350 didn't come available in the caprice until 1986, the year chevy also redesigned the front and rear clip on these cars along with some minor interior changes. Oh and don't worry, the 305 in my ol girl is long gone. currently it has a 4 bolt 350 and i converted the car to fuel injection.
You can keep an early 80s B-body going with a crescent wrench and an assortment of hammers. My uncle's father bought a B-body Buick back in 1983 brand new and he's still driving it!
@@z7o2p I'm still on TH-cam, yes. You now have the distinction of having done a reply to the oldest TH-cam comment of mine I've ever had one done to (17 years; the previous record was 13). 15 years ago I moved to Minnesota so I have no idea if my uncle's father has the car I mentioned.
I pressed the brake, floored the gas, then slowly let off the brake until the wheel started spinning. Once the wheel started going I let off the gas down to about 1/4 throttle (about 3000 RPMS) so I didn't overrev the engine, then at the end I let off the brake completely and floored the gas to keep the wheel going for another 100 feet or so.
Nice burnout with your 305. Take a look at mine (look up Van Burnout). My G20 with its old 305 would fry BOTH tires and it had P255/70/R15s and 3.08 gears.
I added aftermarket guages that I tried matching the color and style as best I could to the OEM stuff. The tach is in the place of the clock up in the center of the dash and voltage, temperature, oil pressure, etc are all in the flat area where the steering column enters the dash. I used small, light bulb lit guages to help maintain the '80s, luxury interior look.
I had the engine rebuilt shortly after getting it, but only parts that were showing signs of immediate and/or catastrophic failure were replaced. The doors aren't in such great shape however, as the driver's door can't be opened from the outside and three of the windows don't track straight.
Wow, 200k will put some wear on a little more than the ignition system. Your cam lobes may be pretty worn my now as well, but I'll assume the motor was pretty well maintained to have made it this far without any major issues.
I've got the sister vehicle (1984 Pontiac Parisienne) with the positrac rear-end, I'll have to try some burnouts with it once I get a new distributer. 200,000+ miles does some damage to the ignition system.
It's a '92 Lesabre Limited. I got it at 113k and have put 75,000 miles on it over the last year and a half. Nothing needed but an alternator, and I killed that because of the speakers I have. Needed a capacitor to solve that problem. It's been a good car, but my next car will be a Series II 3800. Series I you can't find performance parts for.
I really do. No hate man, just that if someone wants to post a video of their car, there's no reason to dump on it. It's their car after all. Comment on the performance, but don't comment on the motive. You can't affect whether or not they do it, so just enjoy it.
dude i'd love to see a vid of the 350 swap you did. and btw do you remember how high you were revving this thing in the video? i heard the redline on these things are really low at something like 4000.
@BobTheNailer92 do it man...i own 2. 1 88 base model and another '88 brougham ls. great vehicles. what a vehicle is suppose to be. drive, handle, ride great. great big boats floating down the road, i wouldnt trade it for nothing. def recommend getting a caprice.
@ludek92 Depends on the tranny and rear end gearing. There's no set speed governor to my knowledge. For example, the car you saw in the video had a factory 305 with the TH 700R4 tranny and 2.73 gears in the rear end. I've gotten the car up to 115 at about 5000 RPM. Now the TH 700R4 will not leave 3rd gear with the engine at WOT. With a mod that's available on the market, you can have the transmission treat overdrive as a 4th gear even at WOT. So in theory, the car can reach 150 mph w/ more hp.
I actually found the real specs for the 305 today. i've been getting all kinds of numbers but i think these are right: yellow line 4500. red line 5000. But its really pushing it for a a tired old 305 and it barely makes any HP at rpm that high
Why did you sell it??? I love mine it is also a 305 TBI Dark Blue some Damage nothing to bad. I have put about 14000 on it I have had it just over a year.
How did you perform this. by breaking or the footbrake - pedal. i've got an 78 caprice but my burns are nothing compared to this. not that i want to end my tires, but just for fun. so how did you do this?
Its not so much the engine that was having trouble its that the tranny is on its way out (bands are VERY heavily worn) its the reason why I did it, I figured might as well beat the rest of the life out of it before putting in the new one. And I'm not suprised that nothing broke. You should know that these cars are built MUCH stronger than any newer car, and last nearly forever aside from rust. (still no reason to beat on em) Ive known Caprice owners that have up to 350,000 miles on thier cars.
Simple... Put the tranny into 1st gear (D1 or just 1), Press Brake 3/4 the way down, press gas pedal until tire(s) spin. Once the wheel heats up its easier to spin the tire, so let off the gas slightly to be sure nto to overrev the engine.
how did you do this with a caprice, im farmilliar doing burnouts with cars that are sticks, not automatic.... let me know, id get my caprice to burn some rubber
Nothing in this video, it's the bone stock 5.0 liter 305. I've since removed the engine, replacing it with a 350, and added true dual exhaust. I'm looking for a good rear end right now with better gears and a limited slip differential. I'll post a new video this summer after the snow and salt is off the roads.
I want one of these cars. Nothing odd about that but i am British (American cars are a rare sight in the uk).Add that to the age they are now at a Caprice Classic is impossible to find in the here. It probs sound odd to you Americans why i would want a dated old car that is to you common place but here it is a real novelty. With that in mind i hope the author of this vid understands why it makes me a bit sick that he can just get one and then treat it like trash.
Nah, I haven't been able to find the time to really do much else to the car. It does have a 350 in it now though, and once I do manage to get the time I have a throttle body injection setup I'm going to install in place of the carburetor.
Relax would yah, the tranny was already on it's way out as was the motor, this was sort of a way for it to go out with a bang. Both have since been changed and the car is running great to this day. When I do things like this, I keep a close eye on engine RPMs, transmission temperature, oil pressure etc. Believe it or not, I do take great care of this car and get complimented on it's condition fairly often.
Once again, no I didn't neutral slam (drop) it, if I did you would have heard the engine rev up before the burnout started. If I did though, it may have made for a nice effect. Hm....
Ha ha, it's only a 165 Horse and I don't know what NM means. It ain't got that old engine anymore though. I'll be posting another video of the new engine soon.
i could understand why you would want a caprice there great cars and with the 305 you could get them to get about 28 miles to the gallon you just have to know what you are doing ya just wont get that when you are putting a hole in the floor with your foot lol
Ah, see a stall would have been nice for this smoker. My car just has the OEM torque converter so even at 500 RPM, the car'll move. Thats why you might have noticed it took a second to get the wheel going.
Nah, too old for grandparents now. I see more old folks driving the newer Impalas, and Ford Crown Vics. People like them because they're big, comfortable, V8 powered, rear wheel drive classic cars.

One of the first videos uploaded on TH-cam. Definitely the first box Chevy video uploaded on TH-cam

Cool video, I have an '89 Classic Caprice with 186,500 miles and it still runs great. Just did a 1200 mile trip without a single problem.
Are you alive brother 😭?
I love that Carb thrum sound an SBC with a quiet exhaust makes, you can hear it really well when he lets off the brakes and takes off at the end.

That car sounds sick at the end.Fine American automobile.
nice burnout of a classic caprice like that it has alot of tracktion on the ground

Ohhh Mike... you're the one with the sweet Caprice that has the Buick style wheels.
Sweet, I need to get me one of those!! Could a 267 in a Monte Carlo do anything like that?
nice,,, i didnt think itd go that long. i looked back up at the screen and that shit wus still puttin clouds in the sky lol
I'm going to get an old tire and do that too!!! I hope my differential doesn't go out though!!!! lol. Great video!!

i got a 87 caprice w/305
i wonder how the 350's will do

i can't help but keep coming back to this vid. I can't the end how high that old 305 is revving lol! my caprice BARELY goes up to 4000 rpm haha

Of course! The 305 only had 165 horsepower, but they push 240 FT/LBS of torque which is really what matters on a car this size.
That $5.00 tire is just a whinin'!! lol. Nice burnout.

I hope she is still kicking strong!
Great burnout. Im thinkin about gettin a mid to late 80's caprice classic myself. Only ill get a 350 in it instead of a 305.
I am familiar with Reattas and they are strange looking things indeed. :) What in the hell was Buick thinking is what I'M thinking!
Sweet vid, I love caprices. I've got one myself, a 91 with the 305; burns out nicely I might add. :D

haha sick dude i have an 84 and i had no idea this car could do that
I had a 84 caprice. When I got rid of it it had over 300 K on it'with original engine-305.
hell ya
my friennd had an 86 and that thing was a burnout machine!
Yeah, it's been like three months though. Ever since I started my new job and since my laptop died I haven't really had a chance to be on.

302? Huh? It's the chevy 5.0 Liter 305 CID engine. Theres also the 307 Olds motor. I think 302 is the Ford 5.0
Yeah, I have an open differential. I'll be investing in new gears and a limited slip differential soon enough.
