- 350 chev motor blows up after full rebuild
cause to the motor throwing a rod was because 1 main cap bold was not torqued and had come loose
Yes there was oil on the lifers but not as much as there should have been
and no this was not the first motor to be built, was about no:436 have now done just shy of 550, and we always video the first starts in case this happens lol

The fact this wasn't spraying oil all over the shop with the valve covers off should have been an instant hint to shut down.
Conclusion: they do not know what they where doing
exactly
My thoughts exactly
Bruh i have no clue what your talking about but from the looks of this video they should’ve known aswell
@@450brucey2 well its real simple, if the oil level is correct, the pump is working properly, there is good oil pressure and oil is flowing in the correct direction, it should be making its way up to the top end of the motor in which case it should be splattering all over the place if the lifter covers are off. It was fairly obvious after a minute or two that something was not right with this motor.
Last rebuild I did was on an old BOP215. I was able to get to the oil pump through the distributor tube and work it with a power drill. Before even starting the engine I had oil working it's way up to the rockers. The fact that these guys had the engine running for a while without even seeing any oil at the top is pretty concerning 😂
im not concerning the video is CLICKBAIT/no oil /no antifreeze

With all the kinks in that top rad hose, I don't think it would've made a difference. When he revs it up, you can see the hose collapse on itself.

Where's the oil?!?!
Must've been a good build. It ran for an amazingly long time with no oil!

@@86753091974 yeah oil never left the pan (they probably forgot the oil pump driveshaft)
Yup oil would be pouring out of push rods.... normally lol

Bill, don’t add the oil. That shit makes a huge mess when we run the engine with the valve covers off.
😂😂😂
Ryan you made my fucking day

There was a lack of oil not making a mess lol
There was oil in that engine you can see it all leaking out at the end. He fucked something putting it together lol

GREAT JOB GUYS! Not seeing oil sling off the rockers was your first sign 🤦🏼♂️
and they were doubtfull and rev it high just for sure
🤣🤣🤣
They both looked at the oil pressure gauge that said 0 and said let's rev it 52 times to fix the issue 😂
This knock knock joke isn't funny
Also revving it up and down didn't help, you wanna give it about 20 min or so steady at 2000 rpm the first time and ease it in after that, despite the lack of oil up top, it looks to be a broken rod, possibly from a spun bearing, this is why no revving the first time
Probably two mistakes…not pre-oiling the oil pump and not installing a temporary oil pressure gauge..
These guys must be members of the "Stop Oil" movement.

The way he snatched the screwdriver from the other guy like "I got it!!!"😂😂😂😂

Got to admit, it sounded pretty good while it lasted.
No oil getting to the rockers let's just keep reeving it it'll fix itself.
That's what I was thinking.
My SBC rebuilds blew oil all over the place out of the push rods. Looks like no oil pressure.
One of my SBC's was built by professionals. A stroked 400. I fired it up and it had 5 lbs oil pressure. I shut her down. Long story short, never use a Fram oil filter. It collapsed.
Oh course
hoiw is this not spraying oil off the rockers? whenever I adjust valves running without a coverplate I have a mess

Use assembly lube and use a lot of it
Almost long enough for the oil to flow.
The fact that those headers aren't smoking due to oil running all down them should have been a hint.

@@anonymoussubscriber3929 all i have to say is if your engine builder does shit like this run far and hide
I think maybe he pinched a ring. I think if it was bone dry the mains would have seized before a con rod. Probably threw in a set of rings, didn't file fit them to the cylinder and ensure the ring end gap. Heat Increase when he revved it causing the ring pinch, piston locked up and snapped 1 rod.

Oil pressure never entered the chat
I wouldn't let these guys rebuild a lawnmower engine for me. If there is not enough oil after running the motor for one minute and revving it up shut it off and start troubleshooting. Backyard mechanics 436 rebuilds or not.
Or oil quantity
Young kid walked into my dads body shop one day and asked if we could look at his car that had broke down on the highway out front. Kid pops the hood and there’s a baseball size hole in his slant 6. First time I’d ever seen a rod go through a block.
Man, that went downhill quickly. Thanks for posting this.
My auto mechanics teacher told us years ago. When doing jobs like this, that is a one-man job. Because when you do a job like that and there's more than one person working on a job things like this go wrong, because no one knows who did what. And we were always told when doing these kind of jobs to double-check and triple-check ourselves. You can never go wrong double checking yourself and when in doubt double check it again!
Absolutely right and wrong.
I always do a mental preflight checklist after building an engine, and if there's two people i say it outloud. "Did you prime the oil pump"
"Is it full of oil"
"Is there antifreeze/ water" I hate when I see these things run on the stand with no water hose to them. They heat up super fast without water, and if you don't think they do let a normal one with water run 2 minutes and put your hand on the headers. Bet they'll burn you.
You don’t need to be a fuckin mechanic to know something as basic as this
With all due respect, I have to disagree. I can fuck things up, perfectly fine, all by myself!
If you don't have any nuts and bolts left over after a rebuild....you did something wrong.
Damn it lasted that long with no oil, imagine how good it would been if it actually had oil pressure!!!
That's been my experience with chevys too... Run good for a while then boom!... but mine had oil in them.
The small block chevy was a great motor. I had my share. I had a gmc with a 350 4 bolt main and I broke the crank in it a it still got me home ,put a used crank in it and drove it another 3 yrs.

The lack of oil being slung all over by the exposed rockers was a pretty significant hint that you were fixing to hear some ugly sounds if you didn't shut it down. Can't imagine thinking that wasn't a issue
right-like, why wasn’t the oiling system pre-primed? so easy with the engine on a stand to pull the distributor, prime and confirm flow and pressure, then drop in the dizzy and go
@@sc3ku indeed. I certainly would have primed the oil system and kept priming until I had oil at the rockers making itself clearly present. Can't imagine not doing that

Actually very impressive. It went quite a while with NO OIL.
It had oil pressure. You can see the needle on the oil pressure gauge moving. It looks like the needle went to about the middle of the gauge, which is around 50 psi on most gauges. My 2007 5.3 with 170,000 miles still has about 45 psi at idle.
The lack of OIL and the rod hanging out the side of the block disagrees with your statement
@@Utubegofukurself, take up with the oil pressure gauge. It said there was oil pressure. In a lot of engines after the oil leaves the pump it goes to the oil filter and the oil pressure sending unit. As long as there is oil in the pan, those engines will show oil pressure.

Based on what I could see of that gauge he was looking at, it had oil pressure. I think it may have had blocked oil passages, as there was no oil coming out of the rockers. If that’s what it was, then the problem is solved, as that block is junk now.
Not junk... Can be rebuilt 👌🏿👍🏿I had a tractor throw a rod and it was a somewhat easy fix
@@jessemartinez3652 Based on the video, it looks like the rod at least broke part of the block out where the oil pan bolts on, also likely perforated a cylinder wall. Given that these blocks are still available in the junkyard it's probably not economically feasible to fix it. That is the definition of a junk block. I worked at an automotive machine shop back when these were still coming out in new vehicles, so I've seen a lot of these.
@@cjtoombs7473 I guessen I better review vid again! And desirable short blocks are far and few between
@@jessemartinez3652, maybe if it's a 4 bolt main block, but it may still be cheaper to put aftermarket 4 bolt caps on a 2 bolt block, depending on the damage. That has the advantage of being a splayed 4 bolt. I haven't messed with with Chevy's for more than 30 years, but small block Fords are still not that hard to come by. We charged $100 per cylinder to put a sleeve in when I quite the machine shop in 91 (that was 50 labor plus about 50 for the sleeve), I can't imagine that it is less than about 300 (200 labor, 100 parts) now. Also, may have spun the mains or cam bearings in it as well. So is it possible that it could be fixed? Yes. But my money is that it's going in the scrap pile and he's looking for another block. What's salvageable? 6 or 7 pistons (it may have knocked the skirt off the one opposite the one that made a break for it), probably 6 rods, maybe the camshaft, depending on what it did before it came out the side and everything above the cam.
@@cjtoombs7473 I concur... But u can't beat a Chevy 4 bolt main💥
That hurts. After finding mains not torqued on one 350 I did, I started using a paint pen to mark each bolt with a yellow dot as soon as the torque wrench was off. Leaves no question if its been done and it hasn't happened again.

You monster!!
That and keep a check sheet so you can tick it as you go along.
There's no lines on the oil cans!

What usually happens are the inserts on the main bearings slide under each other on the crank. I had that happen to an old 1950 John Deere G popping Johnny. They better have some heavy duty socket breaker bars with heavy pipe. The crank will need to be built up again with chrome not steel, and then machined for correct size. Rings may be shot. @@mikewest9033 depends on the oil pump bud, I had a smallblock and a big block Chevy that had high volume oil pumps and I changed the spring in the pump and it would sling oil across my shop with the valve covers off but a stock application it has to build up and then run through the pushrods
I was going to comment that but you beat me to it! Either way if you have a high volume pump without a valve cover you will have oil spilling out into the headers at the very least. This engine clearly had a lubrication issue. Them rockers looked dry as a liberal woman at a trump rally.

Ya i noticed that there should of been oil just pumping out of the top of the head
My thought exactly, in the beginning. He should have realized immediately after it started that there wasn't high enough oil pressure. He even grabs at the rocker arms and doesn't notice. But, that oil at the end looks mighty full of metal fragments, so it's possible (not probable), that the video quality is to blame for not seeing the oil flowing.
Edit: After viewing the video a second time at about 2:11 you can see oil flow down the valve spring.
Edit 2: I can't be certain (the video quality is rather crappy) but the part of the piston rod coming out of the oil pan appears to be the crankshaft end, not whristpin end. It possible he didn't torque the rod correctly, and it came loose, then the crankshaft shoved the rod through the oil pan.
I think it was lucky he didn't try to start more than this engine ...

I always use an adapter on a drill through the distributor port down to the oil pump drive and run it until I see oil at all 16 rockers. Makes less of a mess too since your drill and you decide how much pressure is needed to get the oil up that high.
There’s one really really important part, oil pickup tube and it’s over there on the bench.
Dammit I knew that went to something
Can't believe they didn't notice the heads had no oil
Meth?
“Reminds me of todays truck manufacturing” “quality control has gone out the window.. I mean engine block”
People walking around with no Pressure or circulation are considered The Walking Dead, while same thing applies to engines.
