    Nobody has the speed and the precision in turns like Baryshnikov.

    The film of Youskevitch makes me smile because I actually took a master class from him a very long time ago. He was 99.9% perfect; Misha, however, was 100%.

    Igor superb of course, but Baryshnikov in 1978 is the sensation

    Hats off to Igor Youskevitch who was able to this demanding variation back in the 40's with easy charm and no hint of strain. Among the modern dancers my preference is for Baryshnikov in the 1975 performance, where he does the sissonnes-entrechats and has also the nerve to do the double tours with one arm en couronne and landings on one foot.

      misha had the nerve for everything ,l saw live him in 75 77 and 79 and still rate him among the really true phenomenon

      Youskevitch's ballon was incredible. I had read that Balanchine's original vision for the double tours-pirouette was as Baryshnikov is going it in 1975 so the position of the double tour is more like a sau de basque so I was surprised to see Youskevitch do a normal double tour. What I like about Misha's 1978 perf (and some of the later Russians seem to be doing this) is the sense that he hovers briefly in mid-air on those sisonnes. Also interesting to see that some artists truncate parts of the music and/or take their time getting into position for the double tours. Thanks for sharing!

    Special big thanks for the Yousekevich footage which I've been hoping to find for quite a long time. He still looks pretty formidable. Maybe his sissones aren't extrended high but he includes the beats (as does Misha in that 1975 footage... probably my fav one of the bunch). Obviously Baryshnikov is terrific in this. And other dancers... some of which I normally love, like Ruzimatov, kind of botch the timing of the entire thing and can't seem to match the music for the different sections of the variation. This has to be one of the all time greatest male variations when it's done correctly.

      imo was good only in exotic roles in pure classic is far less convincing misha and yuskevitch are the best

      the most umbelivle thing is that yuskevitch started with ballet at 21 despite before was a gymnast is an umbelivle level that he got ,

      I don't think Mr B fiddle with the variation. Probably, a Trust repetiteur did.

      You're probably right but I'm noticing a lot of the changes were made after Mr. B. died not when he was alive.

    MB @ 1:00 and 2:08 changes the choreo slightly, the 75 version being more difficult. Both are just beautiful! I love his elegant, regal carriage of the 78 version.

    at a certain point while ruzimatov dances the solo is no longer performed by him but by makhar vaziev whatch it with attenction .at a certain point the dancer changes clearly you can see different face

    • @pediatrapaola
      @pediatrapaola 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      btw vaziev was a good dancer too l saw him in his prime ,was not a great stage personality but was a strong technician expecially in pirouettes ,also must say that in his years in italy as la scala director he did a miracle really trasforming a dreadful company in an all respect one with some really good young rising talents and a decent corps .
