Thanks for the mention John. That stern pole cam is money, you capture every detail from approach to conditions with it. All your efforts go a long way with your viewers, including myself. 👍
@@chrislubrino You don't need to add action. Just follow the bottom contour. It's not just sitting there. It's being pulled over the structure at 2-5+mph by the current.
I was born in Hartford and grew up in Vernon until we moved to Colorado in ‘91. My folks had a cottage on Misquamicut beach that they’ve since sold in 2008. Man watching this kind of fishing brings back such great memories. I grew up fishing “the race” and “plum gut”. I haven’t been back east in over a decade but this makes me nostalgic. I’ve got to get back there soon.
Mr. Skinner, when I watch your channel, I learn so much information. You explain all your tactics. I have become a very good fluke fisherman over the years because of your videos. I also learned from. Fred uhlman he fishes capemay thank you for teaching us these tricks of the trade I wish the weakies would come back like the old days
Hey John, Ever keep any weakfish when they're big enough to feed you all at home? What's the minimum size for a real meal? What's the allowed amount? One, I think? I loved them filleted, seasoned breadcrumbed and fried in oil and butter! Haven't had any in decades! I probably wouldn't keep any either and hold out for something a little bigger despite craving them for so long. Ever get Monkfish in the deeper water areas? You really had a great day there. No I'm not jealous! LOL You must keep the Grumman somewhere around Southold. Perfect! Right in the middle of finding what's running every day. Keep them coming. Such a great way to get outside and ignore mind wasting technology.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Monkfish when prepared right really is a treat. Hope you don't mind, but I'll eat your share of weakfish! LOL Thanks for sharing ALL that experience! Nothing can replace it!
question from someone that know nothing about boats, so maybe is dumb question but why the floor in your boat looks like a unfinish drywall job? (you know before the tape and skim)
No Gulp. This: bit.ly/MyCustomPaddletail. We did a comparison test against Gulp last year on the weaks and this outfished it 2:1. In either case, this hook: bit.ly/3vCua26.
I’d love to try that area for weakfish on my oldtown sportsman 120 that’s arriving this week . Also picking up a hummingbird helix di which you seem to favor on your boat and yaks . Great vid…
Did the striper bite in the bay die ? I’m finally getting a chance to get out there this Friday. In the Gut, you’re usually drifting the other direction aren’t you ? The weather apps were reporting 2+’ every 8 seconds all week, I’m surprised it wasn’t worse . The high camera view is much more viewer friendly, imo. Another great video, Thanks.
I haven't made another bay cast for stripers since I landed that 40-pounder. I don't know what's up there, although I see boats there from where I weakfish. I moved on to the gut.
Hey John. I've been looking into getting more flutter spoons. The past two trips out of moriches using them have caught me more and bigger bass than using live bait or bucktailing. Wondering if you have a link for a variety of sizes. I'm using 3.5 ounce spoons, seems like if I get ones that are a little heavier I can control them better drifting through the inlet.
The current runs 2-5+mph here. If you were able to anchor up, it would take a lot of weight to get to the bottom because the current would carry your rig away, and nearly impossible to make a good presentation. Also, as the video shows, this is a drift fishing area with numerous other boats drifting through. Imagine what would happen to someone anchoring in the middle of a drifting fleet in a small area like this. Good question.
I looked into this for you and got this response: "The best place in NY to get a Maxel serviced would be East coast Fishing on northern blvd. Littleneck. The other shop highly recommended for Maxel would be The Reel Seat in Brielle NJ. Both have parts and plenty of experience. If it seems to be a possible warranty issue then they would need to send to the Reel Seat."
Just picked up a surf rod setup 9 ft tsunami trophy and a penn battle 3 dx. Any general areas I should try for the north shore or south shore? Thanks for the vid.
I'd be looking at the Smith Point area for the South Shore, especially if you have a 4x4. Miller Place through Shoreham has good striper potential. You'll need to research where the Town now allows access. I think there's County access in Miller Place at Cordwood landing.
I used to think if I had to come back in the next life as someone other than myself, it would be as Springsteen (an easy call really). But now I think Skinner might be right up there with him.
@@JohnSkinnerFishingthat’s the correct answer! From a retired professional hockey player. Although for me it would be a Hartford whalers or Avalanche player. Most of us never make it to the “show” NHL but the minor leagues is still great hockey.
Can I ask why the barrel swivel for that setup? Wouldn't it make more sense for the same length leader if not longer with a uni or FG knot so you're not smacking the swivel in the guide since you're not netting? or is it just preference to use the barrel swivel.
Best video and narration for East Coast fishing around. You are a very skilled angler John .

I’m from CT too. You would be surprised how close to home those striped bass come, right up the CT river.
John: Thanks for sharing a great fishing trip!
Glad to see you wearing your PFD..just note its too loose and will probably beover your head when its inflated. Snug it up to be safe. Nice catch!
The incoming tide has always been kind to me there!

It's not the size of the boat, it's the knowledge of the Capt. 👍

Monkfish are awesome! I've caught a couple at Montauk while fluking. I don't like the taste of weakfish.

That's a great deal on that stuff. I'm living in those things the last month and wear the slickers all year, even in Florida on the "cooler" days.

Hey John! Nice video. Are stripers tasty fish?
They are. Pricey too in a seafood store.
question from someone that know nothing about boats, so maybe is dumb question but why the floor in your boat looks like a unfinish drywall job? (you know before the tape and skim)
It's glass over wood.
What size hook do you have on the gulp. I'll be fishing up in jamesport this Sunday. Heard reports of them being caught. Thanks John!

Man it's been years since I picked up a weaky great job jhon
John- do you notice fishing the outgoing or incoming tide at plum gut? Does either tide change anything for you for how you fish it?
I prefer incoming in spring and outgoing in fall.
Awesome as usual. Fluke not worth targeting in the bay?
That's my impression right now. I've tried only a little when coming back from other fishing and not a touch. Hardly anybody targeting them too.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thought after the opener and some fish were caught, it would be better by now
When the water warms up a bit would be more active
hi John where is be best area targeting weakfish now? I know there are some in the bay. Is there any weakfish near plum island?
From Southold west. I have not fished them near plum.
A friend of mine just took delivery of a brand new Eastward 30 catamaran. I'm looking forward to getting out on it.
What mold are you using to make your jigs, one look like a hot lips jig-- I can't find one 6-8 oz
I have a 6-ounce custom rubber mold.

Any spots you recommend in GSB near patchogue? I go out to Moriches inlet but seeing if there’s anything
I would stick to the inlet area when safe to do so.
Another awesome video thanks! You ever get out near Jones either either bay or beach?
Thanks. I don't fish that far west. Too many good options close to home.

Are you getting fish in approximately the same area of the drift? If so why not just anchor up?

It's my preference for avoiding the braid to fluoro knot and to give some line twist reduction.
