    And just like that, every spoon was sold out in the NorthEast! Mr Sinner is truly a legend and thumbs up for the captain, sacrificing his fishing opportunity to keep ‘em on the fish. Excellent work all around

    I've watched just about every one of John's videos and at this point I'm convinced it's the stripers that are trying to catch John, not the other way around.

    Heck of a Captain!
    I fish Muskies in Canada and the Nichol’s Magnum is MONEY!
    The spoon slips backwards as you ease the line. That is the allure to the fish.
    Most Folks can’t Jig as aggressively as needed while constantly feeling for the bottom. They are usually “done within 15-minutes. Sweet!
    I don’t fish heavy current so I use heavy duty spinning gear, cast, allow the lure to slide backwards till it just “ticks” bottom. I use white 30# braid and am a “line watcher”. Lure does get hung up at times but I have a 2-3oz. Lure Knockers that you clip on the line and allow it to slide to the line/lure connection. Jiggling usually releases the snagged lure.
    Be well and appreciate the video.

    I've been using the Nichols spoons for several years. Although originally designed for largemouth bass, they can be ordered upgraded "saltwater" hardware. They have been amazing for redfish, jack crevalle and various other near shore species.

    With spoons and slow pitch jigs like that, if you want the jig to drop down quicker you don't want to lower it with slack line because it will flutter all the way down and take forever to sink. Instead put a little thumb resistance on the spool and this will keep the jig straight up and down and sink much faster. It will keep it from fluttering

    I use them on large spinning tackle for stripers where you can dump the line letting the spoon quickly get down to depth. Found you can have the spoon drop faster vertically with very slight finger resistance as it free spools down vs the normal jigging action of barrel rolling in complete free spool.

    I was in a tackle shop today grabbing a few things and overheard one of the guys working there say he’s gotten about 150 phone calls in the last week from people asking about flutter spoons since you posted this video. Then he said “if I get one more f’n phone call about something from a John Skinner video I’m ripping the GD phone out of the wall, I f’n hate hearing that guy’s name”. I almost laughed out loud. Just picked up a copy of Fishing the Bucktail, great read so far. Thanks for all the informative videos! This is similar to some methods used in Canada and Midwest US in lakes when a full downrigger outfit is not feasible.
    Flutter spoon or large fly, enough lead to get close to bottom and careful throttle on the motor.

  • @mattzapala4791
    @mattzapala4791 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mind blowing! Have you tried thumbing the spool as the spoon drops to try and keep it sinking with the hook end down and without fluttering? If you get the spoon to fall with tension you can get it going pretty fast. If you just let it fall without tension then it will definitely just flutter the whole way down.
    It’s a trick we use to get spoons deeper and faster to jig smallies. Depending on how much cup that spoon has, it might help you to get down faster. If it has a huge cup to it then maybe it probably won’t work well.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't try that intentionally, although I think the current and line belly had that effect on this trip. I will definitely try thumbing going forward. Good tip!

    John i wonder if you experimented adding a little weight to the top of the spoon like a trolling Drail? People who have fished the gut ( and Race ) know the tide gets ripping and holding bottom can be difficult. Obviously any weight u add may cause the spoon to stop fluttering properly.

    those fluttering spoons are amazing(also quite a workout) if you're on a boat using sonar, cause they're designed for the stripers to hit them on the way down as it's fluttering. bucktails are still more practical, especially for people that are fishing from shore.
