I just stumbled upon this channel and I think I'll spend the rest of the day watching your other videos. This is absurdly good, you deserve a lot more views.

Man, there are very few things i feel nostalgic for, one of those things are goddamn arcades, bruh i miss it, i miss it. Not only because of the games, of course they were awesome, but arcades were magical places, the social aspect of it, as a kid, if you spent a day at the arcade, by the end of the afternoon *you will have made a friend* .
in 2018 i was 25 years old, i found an arcade during vacation break, it was empty and only had one kid working at the entrance, he was about 17-18 years old, and was only working there. I invited him to play co op with me on an old favorite of mine, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, he never experienced arcade games before and he became absolutely enamored with it. When i would die at the game and spend all my credits he would open up the machine and get more coins for us to play for free, we spent the whole afternoon playing all of the cabinets; On that day i could not believe it was the year 2018, it felt like i was 10 years old again making friends with another kid at the arcade, for one day i was able to recapture that "arcade magic" again.

Great video. First of this channel I've seen. Growing up in Denmark, arcades was never part of my culture but I totally understand what you mean about forums, and feeling lost in historyless places. I think it relates to the conversation about third spaces and social urban design.

I miss arcades. The lights, the sounds, the hustle and bustle. Coins on the cabinet to signify next round. All of it.
I sunk so much into Virtual On, Initial D, and Dance Dance Revolution, I could have bought a small island nation.
Also, nice use of R4's soundtrack. It's one of my favorite OSTs of all time.

I looked up why arcades are called arcades and ended up learning about renaissance-era architecture

You know these Trad twitter accounts that post images of statues and talk about how millennials could never create such 'art'?
I hope we have that in the future for arcade games. In hundreds of years I want people pointing at photos of a NEOGEO playing Metal Slug X; and commenting "How have we strayed so far?"
I adore arcades and after watching over 200 episodes of Game Center CX; I feel I've learnt so much about Japanese arcade culture (or game centers as they call them).
Pandemonium did an excellent video on the Saturn release of Parodious that's chocked full of developer interviews. You can tell that Japanese game developers during the 90's had such reverence for arcade and arcade games; Konami especially.
Even today, there is such a hardcore audience for schmups/bullet hells that still glows in Japan.

I can't wait for the nostalgia to sweep in for games no one played in their actual day

@@TheCellarTaigenMoon Well we already have that for PS1 and N64 right now. I'm in my 30's and had a PS1 for Christmas so my nostalgia is 'genuine' but I don't disparage anyone for feeling nostalgia for consoles and games they were too young to get because I actually have nostalgia for the N64 and I didn't get one till my 20's.
In fact there's a word I've coined that I call Jealoustalgia; meaning to feel jealous of someone's nostalgia for a piece of media that they grew up with.
I coined this term when I was dating a girl who grew up hardcore with the N64 and games like Banjo Kazooie and Majora's Mask. I found myself feeling incredibly envious of growing up with the N64 even though I grew up with probably one of the greatest RPG machines ever.

Jealoustalgia is so real. I remember feeling it hard as a kid during that first wave of 80s nostalgia coming in. I was like ten years old and having a crisis because I wasn't growing up with toy commercial cartoons and didn't have twenty years of stuff to feel nostalgic about. Now that I'm old enough to actually have nostalgia, it's ironically not very appealing to me lol
