honestly i find it really funny how oppenheimer in this video is characterized as a creepy old man, completely reversed with how he's usually depicted in media
I think Oppenheimer’s story is one that’s very easy to romanticise. “Tortured genius whose career was ruined by McCarthyist freaks” is a good sell for a Christopher Nolan film (which I generally liked) but the weirder parts of Oppenheimer’s legacy aren’t as well known as they should be. Unquestionably brilliant but man he got up to some odd shit lmao
One of my favorite quotes from the development and use of the bomb came from LBJ after Oppenheimer expressed his remorse after the bombing of Hiroshima. Johnson said to his secretary "don't let that fucking cretin into my office again, he didn't have to drop the bomb, I did" It's a messy, messy story with no heroes
@@MQTateThe term "McCarthyist", in and of itself, is historical revisionism. McCarthy only went after actual spies in the military, and he was right about almost all of them. He also had nothing to do with the House Un-American Activities Committee. Or any House committee, for that matter, because McCarthy was a senator.
I attended a standing room only lecture by Pauling at a Texas Medical School in the mid-80s. I don't recall the details, but his lecture centered on ibuprofen (he pronounced it 'uh-BOO-profen' which is why I remember his subject matter). I do remember his lecture style to be engaging and the gist of his lecture to be plausible - maybe more so because he was considered Medical Royalty at the time.
As someone who has Pauling in their academic family tree, there were a few times where I was like ‘wow that trait passed down’ or ‘oh so that’s where that comes from’
My father (Caltech '58) had freshman chemistry from Pauling. He told a story of Pauling pitching his key ring across a lecture hall, smacking a sleeping student on the forehead because he hated people sleeping in his lectures. Pauling never broke his lecture stride.
Hot dang! Some big credit to you crediting all the music used. First point I thought, "Is that from animal crossing? It sounded like ps1 breakbeats earlier. Is this all videogame music?" And checked the description. Only to be welcomed by a FULL BLOWN LIST! Wow. Sincerely, great work.
I came to this channel because of the lab supervision video, but damn your videos are well made and overflow with love for the field and well told stories. Loved every minute, can‘t wait for p2
I saw almost all of my heroes in one video. The work of these people, the real OGs of chemistry and physics is stunning. It is truly and understatement to say that without these people our world would definitely not be as advanced as it is, they really skyrocketed our understanding of the world and we owe them our gratitude. Thank you for this amazing video
i dont have the power of divination or anything but as someone whos consumed copious amounts of youtube content i can tell you got the juice. this channel has whats necessary to be successful. please keep up the tremendous work. now i gotta watch all your other videos :)
i LOVEEEE your bobbybroccoli-inspired production. your art and music is impeccable, and this subject is very engaging and deeply interesting!!! thank you mr. tate!!!
Dealing with a dysfunctional parent is a deeply traumatizing experience, in his case that meant he had to be overly self reliant and really didn't have someone to listen to him and correct his behavior.
It's sad how early kids from dysfunctional households have to grow up. I didn't have time to mention in the video, but Pauling was pretty absent with his own kids. Ava was, by all accounts, a doting mother, and it was common for married men in the 30s and 40s to not see much of their children, especially ones as busy as Linus. But I do wonder whether he'd have spent more time with them if his father had lived for another 30 years
I just found your channel. I am in love with the concept of extremely high quality, very informative physics/science shitposts. Also the history of physics (particularly quantum physics) is a big interest of mine - I am watching your career with great interest.
I know next to nothing about chemistry but this video was fantastic - super engaging and funny as well, glad the algorithm Gods placed it in my homepage.
I can’t believe I found you at under 10k subs. I just had to doublecheck I saw that correctly before posting. What a great production, I can’t wait for part 2!
Impressive how much he worked while studying, he's very fortunate he didn't break down. Can't help but wonder if he used chemical stimulants like Paul Erdos. I also have a suspicion that all his time working menial jobs with people who struggled to get by made him feel like workers deserved better treatment. It's a completely normal reaction to the struggle.
After getting diagnosed with ADHD and getting treatment, I've really started enjoying learning about physics in general. I also started to really like learning about the history about alot of things(WWII) This video was super entertaining to hear, and I watched along so I can keep up with the names and not get confused lol I'm really excited for part 2 of the video, and I'm really glad I found your channel. I think I'm going to be listening to the rest of the videos you have uploaded previously during my commutes for a while lol I've subscribed, and I'm genuinely excited to learn about new people I wouldn't have had any interest in if it weren't for these videos. I wanted to share the joy I got from the video, instead of just clicking off.
What a beautiful day to be alive, if only i had some crunchy iron to enjoy this video with The thumbtack design looks very professional, i think im falling in love
My buddy who I've taken chem with loves Linus Pauling from our shared chem classes, but I learned he was crazy from my bio class which I took without him, its funny to me since I've loved praising him with the phrase "we've got the next Linus Pauling here" even before I learned about his work on biochem. Maybe this video will show him it's a now a bit of a backhanded compliment
Schrödinger had a lot of trouble because he openly lived with a wife and (young) mistress much of his life. He groomed teen girls. Then again, Schrödinger - not Jewish - told the Nazis to fuck off with their anti semitism and left Germany in 1933.
30:10 I think you forgot to put down the background music in the description. I believe it is: Stardew Valley OST - Summer (The Sun Can Bend An Orange Sky)
30:08 I'm loving this video, hearing Stardew Valley's music in the background however is confusing because I'm already playing Stardew Valley. All I'm asking is that quickly compose nicely matched original background tracks for every section of your video, just matching the vibe perfectly isn't enough.
Milton Friedman had a great quote on Nobel disease ‘I myself have been asked my opinion on everything from a cure for the common cold to the market value of a letter signed by John F. Kennedy. Needless to say the attention [from receiving a Nobel prize] is flattering, but also corrupting. Somehow we badly need an antidote for both the inflated attention granted a Nobel laureate in areas outside his competence and the inflated ego each of us is in danger of acquiring.’

Every single person in the world has gotten up to some weird shit they don't want to be remembered by

This has a Bobby Broccoli feel to it, but with the added twist that the person claiming a discovery prematurely got away with it.
Thanks for accurately portraying Oppenheimer's piercing blue eyes. They were so piercing that they actually split atoms apart
tesla's lazers 😁
A big misconception is that they used really tiny hammers. But in reality, they just asked Oppenheimer to stare at the atoms.

For the record, 21 December 2021 was a Tuesday, so he clearly misspoke.
Oppenheimer trying to form history’s most accursed scientist polycule is hilarious, wtf was he doing
Just what you said: Trying to form a scientist polycule. It's almost like something from the porn parody of the movie Oppenheimer.
"If he didn't immediately excell on a topic he quickly lost interest and his grades plummeted" he's just like me

That's insane! Doesn't surprise me it was standing room only, not every day you get to listen to a dual Nobel Laureate
haha....that's how i (correctly) pronounce it, and i get a, 'wtf did i just hear' look from most ppl 😆
I both can't wait for part 2 and couldn't resist sharing this video with every friend on my course. Fabulous stuff!
I read that as "I RUINED CAREER :D "
i love the swirling oppenheimer music every time he shows up
