I love that you guys used the word "conversation", as opposed to "duel" or "battle" that so many others have. They, in no way, are fighting each other.

This is without doubt one of BAND-MAID's most awesome standout out live performances & lead/bass conversation. The whole Yokohama show was amazing :)

While they are all great musicians, I have long felt that MISA is in the conversation for best rock bassist in the world today. Re. Miku, her rhythm line during the "conversation" also adds a huge element of energy and anticipation, as she takes the chords higher and higher--but people miss is unless they are listening for it.
Best rock performance last 10 years
On their 2023 tour, this became a highlight moment in most of their performances. There are dozens of clips of various versions of it up on YT and they are all fun to watch. Best rock band in the world now!

I totally agree. Saiki-san is never awkward on stage hence that level of comfort the audience always feels with her. It also helps that she's rarely off key! She's really amazing that way.
I will add that she is very graceful as well.
Band Maid being Band Maid at it's finest !!!!!! If you noticed,,,,after covid, Akane's speed has grown tremendously. She spent alot of hours
being the kit working on her double bass skills....and now she is really on another level. I am a drummer and can tell you her feel, touch and
precision is second to no one !!! And I don't know how.....but she always finds the perfect beat or fill that totally fits the song.
In an interview, Saiki explained about the "?" mark in the title of this song. When Saiki wrote the lyrics, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE", and then she realized that "HATE" could be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて" is typically used in question, she put "?" to make the title "HATE?". I'm sure that Saiki was smiling a lot when decided on this title with "?" because she guessed that English speaking fans would be puzzled by it.😏
"はて?" can be translated as "What?"😉
There is no dead weight, no weak link, in Band-Maid. All talent, all effort, all respect.
Again, my three favorite reactor quotes from Band Maid's "early years" (2016-17, in this case): (a) "Oh c'mon, that's not really them playing those instruments" {Well, my guess is "Yes"}; (b) "They'll never be able to keep this up -- women have no stamina" {They're in their 10th year as a band, and the concert that this song came from was 3 1/2+ hours long and contained 33 songs...}; (c) "Man, they go for every cliche in the book" {There is a difference between creative integration of your own stylings and iconic formats. as compared to enslavement to historic formulas, without the injection of any meaningful form of creativity by the artist/performer}. Band Maid honors tradition, but is constantly evolving in terms of form, content and technical performance. They are not close to "plateauing" (peaking) yet. Band Maid Forever!!!!!

What many people fail to hear is during the "Conversation" Miku joins in, in the left channel part way through, after Kanami's second "Interjection", playing octaves to Kanami's guitar. Then as Kanami went head to head, Miku mirrored Kanami's riff, leading to a much fuller sound.
She does such a lot of that kind of thing these days. Frequently doing a "subsolo" under kanami and/or misa.
I've heard that the question mark is a Japanese pun on how the English word hate is spelled.
One thing I love about Band Maid, when it's time for the members to do their solos, they don't take it overboard. The solos are always tasteful and always stay within the song's main melody line, unlike in other rock bands when the solos go off in so many different tangents that it they don't feel like it's part of the song anymore.

I watched my DVD of this concert yesterday and made it a point to focus on Akane exclusively. Needless to say I was in awe of her performance. It was 33 songs worth of absolutely beautiful and powerful drumming and she was smiling from ear to ear the entire time. 😁

@@GaryHolloway-810 Those two (Kanami and MISA) have done that with each other thousands and thousands of times over the years, practising and putting songs together. You can't just take 2 guitarists and throw them together and be able to perform at that level. They're in each others heads and actually talking in a way only they know. It's magic.

Surely this was the moment that Pigeon English has melded with quantum physics and MISA has become the source of all gravitational waves in the universe. I saw Band-Maid live on October 21, 2022 which was a month after the Unleash EP was released. I was hoping that Band-Maid would play Hate? but it was not part of their 18 song set. The song would make its live debut less than a week later in NYC. The Dallas show confirmed that they were a very good live band. I knew they would improve, but I had no idea how far and fast that improvement would be. I watched their August 2023 Lollapalooza performance on television and I was blown away (Hate? was a big highlight). Move ahead almost 4 months to the huge Yokohama Arena show and Band-Maid proved themselves to be a great live band that now belong in front of crowds in the tens of thousands.
When Saiki heard this song as an instrumental (which Kanami wrote during the dark early days of the pandemic), she thought Kanami, along with Akane, had put a lot of anger into it. Kanami denied it was an angry song, but Saiki wrote the lyrics with that theme, to say the least. When I first heard the song and deciphered the lyrics, it gave me Carly Simon "You're So Vain" vibes. I agree with y'all's interpretation that the song is not really about real hate, but it is about the rage felt when suffering the ultimate betrayal by the person you love. The over the top, and at times amusing, lyrics are very much verbal revenge resulting in nuclear annihilation of the relationship (I watched Fallout, so nuclear annihilation is on my mind).

One of, if not the best live performances recorded from the ladies on video, probably the most aggressive lyrics in their catalog and a conversation between 3 world class musicians that you rarely hear anymore. Yes, I'm including Akane because her beat carries this conversation relentlessly from start to finish. ❤🔥🤘🏻

Great powerful, hard driving song made more awesome when one realizes that this is Band-Maid's 27th song of a 33 song setlist. Simply amazing performance.
The looks of excitement on your faces when you simultaneously realized it was another "conversation" between Kanami n Misa was priceless!
On Saiki, their latest vid, Endless Story, is the finale of their 10th anniversary tour. She really cranks it up a few notches and it is, without a doubt, her finest and most heart-felt performance.
**VERY IMPORTANT**
When you react to it, you MUST have the closed captioning ON in order to know what she is saying to the crowd in order to get the full understanding of the situation. Believe me, it's incredibly emotional. (Have tissues handy!)

It was one of the highlights of the 10th anniversary concert at the Yokohama Arena, but far from the only one - in fact, there were only highlights! Surprise after surprise, emotion after emotion, wonder after wonder. A must-see!
Thanks for the reaction and comments. Good to see you gents reacting to Band-Maid again. This is the ultimate F*Off song, composed and performed only the way Band-Maid can. Saiki was definitely on FIRE throughout the entire concert, as were all the ladies. What's criminal is that these ladies don't have a greater fanbase around the world. Miku's backing vocals are great but her guitar part during the verse is sick.
In the Tokyo Garden theater show there is a spectacular bass and drums introduction to this song. In fact, they always change the arrangements in some way.
The Maids are simply the best band on the planet. I would put them up against anyone.
A I see it: MISA and Kanami are in a shouting match, and Akane is the neighbor banging on the wall.

I smiled and laughed when you brought this one up. I can't get tired of watching this., Saiki wrote the lyrics and they're nastily hilarious. I guess it's actually about one of Saiki's friends whose boyfriend cheated on her during covid, at least that's the story I saw, I could be wrong.
Interesting interpretation of the song, it was apparently writen by Saiki and aimed at the husband of a close friend who sheated on her friend during COVID.

Great reaction guys and Saiki wrote the lyrics. There was a lot of cheating occurring during covid lock down in the press at this time and Saiki was pissed. The singer LISA (a friend of Akane) was also affected by this as her husband was caught cheating and created a big scandal.

Regarding the lyrics, I strongly disagree with your takes. Despite the (ironic?) question mark, I think it's very clear there is no remaining love for the subject of the song. It is as clear a f@#!-off song ever written. If there is any self-reproach it's that the narrator put up with the garbage as long as she did. As for whether this was a woman telling off a man or not, it's pretty obvious throughout -- from Miku's "Why don't you try to understand me?" to the cutting and hilarious "ten minutes of limp gymnastics". A fantastic song, with brilliant performances from every member of the band. The best break-up song ever.

In keeping with the nature of the song it was not a conversation. That was a full blown argument. Ending in a screaming match when they are both playing over the top of each other. Of course the woman wins with Kanami's blistering solo rant.

Apparently, SAIKI wrote this song about the cheating husband of a friend.
That's no conversation. That's an argument. Put into the context of the song and its lyrics, this is an argument between the guy (bass) and the girl (guitar). The bass starts the argument, the guitar answers back, the bass says something smart, the guitar mocks the bass by copying the same riff right back, then the argument becomes a shouting match that ends with the guitar (the girl) having the final word ending the argument. Saiki then finishes the song with one final tempered angry Lalalala, LALA LALALALA!!!!

Saiki wrote the lyrics and she is pi$$ed. Some different back stories as why she wrote it. One story is she wrote them after a friend's husband cheated. Another is more personal, I understand she''s had problems with men. Japanese culture has a problem with strong, independent women.
After " Different" , they lost the structure in their songs , and their music became something like chaos ,in my opinion. I liked their old style .
We only hard the songs that we've reacted to from them (all in the playlist linked in the pinned comment), so we don't know which songs came before or after others. However, we have not felt that their songs lost structure or are chaotic in a negative way at any time. We've loved all the songs we covered. B-M are one of our favourite bands.
I disagree. Different, itself, is different from their "normal" style. And as an example, Manners released about a year later, is very structured in a classic rock vein.
Your opinion is valid. But are you saying this song has no structure? Or how about "Memorable" a completely different style of song, a ballad in fact. Really? You might not like them (fair enough) but no structure is in my opinion ludicrous.
At most I'd say their later catalog is generally proggier or more interactive or matches different moods. If that's not your cup o' tea, that's totally fair. But Kanami rarely deviates much from traditional song structures: you're always going to get clearly defined verses, choruses, bridges, a solo or two, intro and outro, etc.
I think there is an indication from which perspective it is written, the "Tеn minutes of limp gymnastics" line. This combined with them being women makes it pretty clear to me that it is written from a female perspective.
