Why the Tudor Black Bay 54 isn't too small

  • It almost feels like click bait to talk about this again while I had explained the same on my first review, the week of the release, but I keep on seeing videos, including those from a mainstream big online secondhand platform, wondering if the Tudor Black Bay 54 is too small or not. So I feel compelled to provide proper consumer advice.

    It’s the right size. Finally a diver that’s not a dinner plate on wrist. It never clashes with anything. Infinitely versatile and also a complete strap monster

    I’m 220lb, athletic build, 20cm wrists and own a 54. I love its retro sizing. I have worn and owned various pieces, 114060, FXD US & MN, many many Seamasters, Speedy, P39, BB58 and I love the character and retro styling of this 7922 reinterpretation. The 54 reminds me also of the 6538 Connery ‘Goldfinger’ Sub that Rolex could never remake. It would crush the vintage values if they did. The 54 is a masterpiece.

    The great thing about 54 is that now that is out a lot of people are selling their bb58 and you can get them at great discount for 21/22 models :)

    I got the BB54 three weeks ago. Have been wearing it everyday. It is a great watch and I love it. No watch is ever perfect because sooner or later you will start wishing this or that elements from something else that you like.
    Keep it simple guys:
    1) if you like it, buy it.
    2) if you dont like it, then buy something else that you like.

    I just watched your video and I absolutely loved it! I found your presentation to be incredibly informative and engaging. You did a great job of breaking down complex concepts into easy-to-understand terms. I also appreciated the humor and personal anecdotes that you sprinkled throughout the video. It made the content more relatable and enjoyable. You're one of the few TH-camrs who I can consistently count on to deliver high-quality content. Keep up the great work! There’s a 54 sitting at my dealer on a rubber strap. I’m so tempted to get it. I’m just wondering if I’m going to regret getting it on a rubber strap vs the bracelet. I know if I can prob get a rubber strap later and bring the clasp over to the aftermarket rubber strap. I really wish Tudor would sell you both: but the bracelet, add (whatever $$ amount) to get a the rubber strap too. And btw, the size on this is great. And that’s coming from someone that wears an Explorer 36mm on most days. I tried the 58 a while back and it’s just too big. It draws too much attention to my 6.5-6.75” wrist.

  • @michaelriera6277

    I tried the 54 and it’s definitely not too small on my 6.5 wrist. I think as a 1 watch collection the 54 is perfect. However, if you have a multiple watch collection, you may want something with a little more spice because for all its goodness, the 54 is a very boring looking watch at least when compared to the 58. Unlike the 54, the 58 is not an exact replica of back catalog Tudor, it is its own thing. The gilted bezel adds a nice warmth and harmony with the gold on the dial, the red triangle harkens back to the Rolex Big Crown and serves to break up the monotony of the watch. I also find the more refined coin edge bezel and matching crown very elegant. It is a very special watch that isn’t an exact replica.

  • @TheGrenadier97

    People focus excessively on table numbers and ignore that there's far more into play than just diameter. Some may think that 37mm is 'small', but the lug-to-lug there is generous (46mm) and the lug width is neither large nor small (20mm). Both nearly exact dimensions can be found in other bulkier watches, like the Orient Kamasu and Citizen NY0040. Black dial and bezel on the 54 gives a feeling of wider size without looking like an "empty plate". Tudor managed a perfect do-it-all for every wrist that has presence, being neither tiny, nor huge. I also must remember that this is totally based on a vintage watch, and it seems that gentlemen in the past had no desperate worries against "small" watches.

    One thing that I find interesting is that the BB54 has a model number that precedes the BB58, as if they had conceived of the BB54 before releasing the BB58. If this is true then it goes some ways to suggest that marketing made a conscious choice to go big before going a little smaller, as if to prod you into re-buying the next model.

    All those saying they need the red triangle because it’s like bonds watch , Connery’s watch it’s a myth . He never wore a 5508 with a red triangle. Yes he wore a big crown a 6538 but the bezel incrementation was the same as the 54 so the only thing missing was the big crown on the 54 ( which it shouldn’t as they aren’t looking to homage a 6538) but the 58 isn’t a Connery bond homage the 54 is as close as they will get . Kudos to Tudor

    • @michaelriera6277
      @michaelriera6277 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some find the gilt harmonious with the gilt on the dial giving the watch a warm, unique look. I remember when the 58 first came out everyone raved about how great and special the gilted dial was and made the BB41 dial boring. Now every reviewer saids just the opposite. It’s fine to have an opinion, but this sounds like typical group think with everyone aping what other reviewers are saying in an echo chamber.
