Both characters grew. I think her turning point with Jaune started at the dance. when Weiss asked Neptune what made him finally ask her to dance, and Neptune referred to Jaune as her friend looking after her. Even before then, I think she just acknowledged him as an acquaintance/ classmate she had to endure.
Honestly considering weis was his first love interest before pyhra i think the hug is valid. Plus weis grew as a character and respect jaune more as the series went on.

Shame of imperfection, jealousy & envy for beauty, greed for riches, pain &suffering, fear of the unknown, or even constructive criticism, is like a mental illness. Very contagious, easy to spread, and impossible to eliminate. There's a bitter medicine called self-acceptance, self-confidence, self-discipline, but that's harder to come by nowadays.
I _really_ wish they kept the hug just between Weiss and Jaune. It was a genuinely really touching emotional moment between them, but I felt like Blake joining in didn’t really add anything and Yang hopping with a huge grin when she literally just watched her little sister attempt suicide was so jarring

I think it would be even weirder if after such an experience they didn't all reassure each other with a group hug. Kinda weird to say a hug between friends in a stressful situation /has/ to be private. Like, I feel like it fits Jaune's arc (har har) this season that he's getting a group hug after feeling both alone and a let down to everyone he cares about. It's not weird for Yang to join in, especially after realizing maybe she's not communicating support as well as she should. Openly supporting someone else going through it makes sense. Y'all seem kinda pessimistic

There's also the fact that Yang and Blake contributed nothing beside the hug, and while I have no doubt that Jaune would be comforted having all four take part, if I may be slightly selfish, the two didn't earn that comforting hug the way Weiss did in that scene. well, in the end it's a nothingburger
This is probably my favorite scene in this season. Gave Weiss time to shine after mostly just being comic relief, gave some great development for Jaune and rewards him for coming to the right conclusions. This arc is so good man. RWBY might not be the same show some people loved, but to me it kept moving forward and evolved into something truly special. I don't know if RWBY has a future after everything that's happened with RT and the CRWBY, but at least if the series does end, it can conclude with such a magnificent season. Let's just hope they can stick the landing.

Jaune was too latched to the past and afraid of being alone again that he was scared to let the Paper Pleasers go on their own and develop. By making it clear it's the PP, the characters have validation for accepting the tree. Specially when using the words that the PP not only defined their existence by, but also had it in their names. This is not like the "Yuri on Ice kiss/no kiss debate", where the author had to blame western culture for not knowing that the kiss was real if they didn't see it clear on the screen. In this case we can see star shaped beings collecting and repairing the rubble around them, with one of them nearing the group with hopes of helping. If that isn't enough to comunicate that those creatures are the PP reincarnated, then we, the audience, are the ones with the issue. Also, on a side note, what do you mean that authors that use subtext are cowards?

The thing here was that Jaune wanted to stop failing. Compared to everyone he's met, Jaune's the only one who continued to fail, again and again. Unlocking his Semblance when he did didn't stop that moment from being a failure in his eyes. It only became a smaller one in comparison to what could be, and I don't think I need to explain Penny
Dude jaune is their freind as well. Its not like theyre abadonning Ruby for Jaune. Yang and Weiss in particular have circumstances that explain their reactions. Weiss literally had her life saved by Jaune. She was their when Jaune did what he did. You can tell by how she danced around how Penny died, and her reaction to Rubys " greatest warrior" speech about Penny. That Pennys death still was weighing on her. She was aruguably the only person who could sympathize with Jaune. As for Yang she spent half of V8 with Jaune, she went into Monstra with him. She saw him at his absolute best when Ren literally threw his lowest moment cheating to get into Beacon in his face. Of course they would be happy to see Jaunes shell crack, and become their freind again

Idk about y’all but I feel as though this whole Ruby depressed and "suicidal" thing does not feel at all pressing enough as it should be to the others. Especially for Yang, I feel a lack of urgency and fear from the group and way more comfort and reassurance for each other yet Ruby is literally gone! It almost feels like a minor issue atp. This whole monologue feels so tranquil.
The tonal whiplash is definitely an issue. I wish we saw more, like Yang having a minor breakdown as she tries to claw at the hole Ruby fell through before being whisked away by the group. I do think the genial gems was partly a reason for the 'lack of urgency' though, as it serves as some sort of reassurance for the group that Ruby will return. Nevertheless, this chapter just felt too short, not the CRWBY's fault of course but still. It's undeniable that it resulted in a weak follow up to one of, if not, the shows best and darkest chapter.

Especially this volume. Maybe it's just the vocal community (those that actually type out comments vs those who don't), but it is pretty much just 5-10%, tops, that seem to actually be coherent. Less of an issue here, in this video... So far.

Secondly and more importantly to their specific situation is we know both his primary reason for asking her(showing he had no ill intentions,just a genuine crush) and her primary reason for rejecting him by her own admission (every boy that had ever approached her has only intended to use her for her name and she incorrectly assumed jaune was the same) It's not just a simple case of "I'm just not interested in you, leave me alone" it's "I think you're a golddigger who doesn't genuinely like me for me, leave me alone " She only realized she was wrong when Neptune told her what jaune had did for her at the dance and that's when their friendship officially started and they've been getting closer in the background of every volume since V5. I do get what you mean and I agree with your general sentiment as far as irl dating is concerned but I don't like how people ignore all the nuance in jaune and Weiss's relationship specifically. Including her misjudgment of his character that soured her opinion of him as a romantic option in the first place. There's a reason why Kara says her biggest regret for Weiss is that she never gave Jaune a chance. Even in v1 he would've been everything she'd been hoping for in a partner since she was a child and saw how messed up her parents were and how fake the boys in atlas were about liking her. She kinda screwed herself out of a good thing.
Yang asked a few times if she was ok, Ruby ignored her after she woke up from fainting after learning about Penny, and then other times when Yang asked, she was about to say something (probably gonna lie and say she was fine) but got interrupted by something

I do like to think that they chose the form of jewels for Jaune's sake (even though it is implied). So he won't have to worry about saving them every day from what endangered them
If they are gonna pull that trigger now would be a great time. Better than how they started out anyway; a totally one sided crush from a clueless inept dork on someone who only looked down on him as another jerk who was only into her good looks and family wealth/name (granted she did have legit reasons for thinking that way; after all that’s the very reason her spineless bastard of a father married her mother for). Over time however as the both of them grew and matured more they formed a much healthier friendship based on mutual respect and trust. Jaune deserves to have someone in his life, if at least fill that empty hole in his heart after Pyrrha’s death. I’m sure talking to her mom helped to alleviate some of that pain but you know it only came back full force when he was forced to kill Penny, and the years of isolation on top of all that. Weiss honestly could be the one who helps Jaune to finally and fully heal

@@TheHysteriaMan well, that's how it works for the Afterans, we don't really know how it goes for Remnant people, as far as we know, Ruby's the first to go through the process, so we don't know how it'll play out. So yeah, looking at it from a human POV probably isn't the best way to look at it, cause it's not a process that's really meant for humans, it's meant for the Afterans, who don't really work from a human morality system or thought process, so to speak.
Failure is nothing to be scared or afraid of, what matters is if you can get right back up afterwards even after being beaten cause there's a benefit to losing, you get to learn from your mistakes.
1:51 "I wanted the rush of rescuing someone." What!?!? Did this come out of left field for anyone else? I NEVER got the impression Jaune was doing this for some "rush". He was doing it from the trauma of failing to save people before. If there was some "rush" for him shouldn't he have some sort of reaction from the saving? I don't see Jaune as someone who rescues people for the rush, but because it's the right thing to do. Does anyone else think this reflection was just weird and kind of cobbled together?
To answer your question you have to think about his entire character. He's a guy that wants the thrill of being a hero, a savior, the knight in shining armor. He glorified a fantasy version of himself being the hero of light that cuts away the darkness. He lied his way into beacon because he couldn't hack it, he tried to get in legitimately but failed because the truth is he is not a hero at all. Especially in the begining, he was a coward and easily frightened. He works on that, and has a heart of gold, but it doesn't change the fact that everything he has done from the begining was to fulfill a fantasy. His entire character arc is basically represented on his body as his armor. From a shining and bright white to heavily rusted, broken, and barely functioning. The tldr here is that he has always had a savior/hero complex that was very present in his introduction, and persisted all throughout the series.
I honestly think it is both. He thought of himself a failure, to not be able to save anyone, especially after Penny. And that solidified when he thought he was failing to be the Rusted Knight from the story. When he saves the Paper Pleasers, he found a coping mechanism, that rush of saving someone. It's only through this scene, and words from someone he actually DID save, that snaps him out of it.
When you have failed and been lost, sometimes you come to the wrong conclusions. "I wanted the rush of rescuing someone" is not what he meant. He seems to still be telling himself lies or skirting around the problem. To me, he is saying "I wanted to be certain i could keep someone safe". Remember, he has accepted he couldnt save the paper pleasers... but that doesnt mean he has accepted he couldnt save the others. "He wants to fill the rush" that he can still do so somehow.
Replace 'rush' with 'feeling' and it makes more sense at a glance, but either wording is valid. Jaune is like Ruby; he wants to save the day and know he helped people in a truly meaningful way. He's always wanted to be a hero, the brave and strong knight that conquers evil and protects the weak, but he's fallen short of that aspiration time and again, just like Ruby, and it's made him desperate to actually fulfill it, pushing him into a dangerous headspace. Seeing that he doesn't need to be a guardian for everyone, especially those that ultimately don't need rescuing, has helped him come to terms with that, because he knows he doesn't ALWAYS need to be the hero to actually be one.
This scene still gives me mixed feelings. Yeah it's nice for the moment Jaune gets, but come on. Ruby basically just offed herself and they're all hugging and acting like it's fine
Weiss isn't she was still frowning when she went into the hug, only smiling slightly when she left it, blake and Yang on the other hand..., Weiss should be more depressed honestly she didn't be the best teammate...but at least she is behaving more emotionally..blake and Yang...i have zero clue I hate it..

Jaune wasn't supposed to grow that attached to them. Those bonds were developed because he held them back from moving on. They were paper people living in a paper-phobic world and once their purpose was completed, life would happen and they would be reborn. The metaphor isn't "kill yourself and get a power up" and they didn't die. Their work had long since been complete. That's the whole point of the Ever After. Jaune's attachment wasn't healthy and he was causing imbalance by preventing life from moving on. And he was holding himself back in doing so. It's a literal metaphor for the cycle of acceptance and moving forward.

Memory is the key for "humans". Our life experiences are basically our existence. For afterans their purpose is their existence. Purpose is more important than anything else, including past memories that might interfere with their new purpose post ascension and so they discard them as unnecessary. The blacksmith all but confirms that only what Ruby wants to happen to her will actually happen so she's only losing her memories if she willingly discards them to start over from scratch.
They didnt really die, you can still tell its them, even if they are different. Imagine someone you know gets memory loss. Do they stop being themselves? That would be ridicules. They might behave a bit differently because they cant remember stuff but that doesnt mean they stop being themselves, and its the same for the afterans. They are still themselves, just different

It was more along the lines of: "Failure happens, but it doesn't have to define you." Which finally breaks the toxic ideals of leadership Ruby and Jaune held themselves to: "Nope, we're leaders now, we're not allowed to be failures."

I like the scene but..... if it was that easy for Jaune and others to find the tree by accepting things..... then why didn't the paper pleasers find the tree decades ago? Was the drowning necessary?
While I like the scene I feel like it should have come later in the volume and happened at the same time Ruby reunites with Somewhat aka Little one, this way both Ruby and Juane could reunite with the friends they made in the Ever After and we could have a really emotional goodbye. I feel like if they done that and then had the characters *actually* be worried about Ruby here less people would complain
Ruby pretty much just killed herself and they don't even address it. They do this...the last episode better be worth the last few years of waiting. Still a little salty that all we get is 10 episodes. I get that Covid stopped a lot, but that shouldn't have stopped them from writing and planning out a whole season
From the OTHER scenes in this episode I'd argue Ruby will end up returning largely as who she was. So maybe lay off the "CRWBY glorified her suicide" bandwagon, mmkay? So far it's been an attempt, and nothing more.

Bro there's no way that was the point of jaune's character arc. It wasn't no dumb self gratifying power fantasy to always be the hero, it was about a broken man trying his hardest to not lose the only people he cared about in a world not his own.
No yeah when I heard his reason for fighting, I got fuckin pissed of by the writing team, the indicators through out the show, show him struggling with who he wants to be and who he is, because in reality saving people is the only thing that brings him any sense of joy, so what I think his arc should ve been was him choosing between the man he wants to be and the person he is to protect what he still has and not lose it

@@micahwilliams2384 Speaking romantically, keeping it to a Jaune/Weiss hug after a Jaune/Weiss moment helps people push their mental ship along. There's also the fact that Yang and Blake contributed nothing beside the hug, and while I have no doubt that Jaune would be comforted having all four take part, if I may be slightly selfish, the two didn't earn that comforting hug the way Weiss did in that scene.

This is probably my favorite scene in this season. Gave Weiss time to shine after mostly just being comic relief, gave some great development for Jaune and rewards him for coming to the right conclusions.
This arc is so good man. RWBY might not be the same show some people loved, but to me it kept moving forward and evolved into something truly special.
I don't know if RWBY has a future after everything that's happened with RT and the CRWBY, but at least if the series does end, it can conclude with such a magnificent season. Let's just hope they can stick the landing.

Jaune was too latched to the past and afraid of being alone again that he was scared to let the Paper Pleasers go on their own and develop. Admittedly it was presented in a way that can be considered very poor, but I genuinely think that wasn't their intended metaphor.

By making it clear it's the PP, the characters have validation for accepting the tree. Plus one could easily explain their similar appearance as them either not wanting to change that facet of themselves or wanting their hero to realize what ascending means to the Afterans
@@relic5752 i know, they just wanted to leave it as clear as possible, but they could have changed more of their physical form or use different words and stil have it as clear as it is. Specially when using the words that the PP not only defined their existence by, but also had it in their names.
This is not like the "Yuri on Ice kiss/no kiss debate", where the author had to blame western culture for not knowing that the kiss was real if they didn't see it clear on the screen.
In this case we can see star shaped beings collecting and repairing the rubble around them, with one of them nearing the group with hopes of helping. If that isn't enough to comunicate that those creatures are the PP reincarnated, then we, the audience, are the ones with the issue.

The thing here was that Jaune wanted to stop failing. Compared to everyone he's met, Jaune's the only one who continued to fail, again and again. Unlocking his Semblance when he did didn't stop that moment from being a failure in his eyes. It only became a smaller one in comparison to what could be, and I don't think I need to explain Penny
Dude jaune is their freind as well. Its not like theyre abadonning Ruby for Jaune. Yang and Weiss in particular have circumstances that explain their reactions. Weiss literally had her life saved by Jaune. She was their when Jaune did what he did. You can tell by how she danced around how Penny died, and her reaction to Rubys " greatest warrior" speech about Penny. That Pennys death still was weighing on her. She was aruguably the only person who could sympathize with Jaune. As for Yang she spent half of V8 with Jaune, she went into Monstra with him. She saw him at his absolute best when Ren literally threw his lowest moment cheating to get into Beacon in his face.
Of course they would be happy to see Jaunes shell crack, and become their freind again
Now we gotta see Ruby's turn on how she will face this problem on her own on Saturday....

Idk about y’all but I feel as though this whole Ruby depressed and "suicidal" thing does not feel at all pressing enough as it should be to the others. Especially for Yang, I feel a lack of urgency and fear from the group and way more comfort and reassurance for each other yet Ruby is literally gone! It almost feels like a minor issue atp. This whole monologue feels so tranquil.

The tonal whiplash is definitely an issue. I wish we saw more, like Yang having a minor breakdown as she tries to claw at the hole Ruby fell through before being whisked away by the group. I do think the genial gems was partly a reason for the 'lack of urgency' though, as it serves as some sort of reassurance for the group that Ruby will return.
Nevertheless, this chapter just felt too short, not the CRWBY's fault of course but still. It's undeniable that it resulted in a weak follow up to one of, if not, the shows best and darkest chapter.

Canonically we can only confirm jaune asked her out like twice. Now tbf it's likely more but we can only confirm twice. It's not like we saw him hounding her every second of every day.
Secondly and more importantly to their specific situation is we know both his primary reason for asking her(showing he had no ill intentions,just a genuine crush) and her primary reason for rejecting him by her own admission (every boy that had ever approached her has only intended to use her for her name and she incorrectly assumed jaune was the same)
It's not just a simple case of "I'm just not interested in you, leave me alone" it's "I think you're a golddigger who doesn't genuinely like me for me, leave me alone "
She only realized she was wrong when Neptune told her what jaune had did for her at the dance and that's when their friendship officially started and they've been getting closer in the background of every volume since V5.
I do get what you mean and I agree with your general sentiment as far as irl dating is concerned but I don't like how people ignore all the nuance in jaune and Weiss's relationship specifically.
Including her misjudgment of his character that soured her opinion of him as a romantic option in the first place.
There's a reason why Kara says her biggest regret for Weiss is that she never gave Jaune a chance.
Even in v1 he would've been everything she'd been hoping for in a partner since she was a child and saw how messed up her parents were and how fake the boys in atlas were about liking her.

If they are gonna pull that trigger now would be a great time. Better than how they started out anyway; a totally one sided crush from a clueless inept dork on someone who only looked down on him as another jerk who was only into her good looks and family wealth/name (granted she did have legit reasons for thinking that way; after all that’s the very reason her spineless bastard of a father married her mother for). Over time however as the both of them grew and matured more they formed a much healthier friendship based on mutual respect and trust.
Jaune deserves to have someone in his life, if at least fill that empty hole in his heart after Pyrrha’s death. I’m sure talking to her mom helped to alleviate some of that pain but you know it only came back full force when he was forced to kill Penny, and the years of isolation on top of all that.
Weiss honestly could be the one who helps Jaune to finally and fully heal

You have to either give yourself to the tree or physically destroy yourself, you lose all your memories, and those around you who didn't ascend live on without you knowing anything about them good or bad. Maybe I'm looking at it from a human perspective, but the concept rubbed me the wrong way.
@@TheHysteriaMan well, that's how it works for the Afterans, we don't really know how it goes for Remnant people, as far as we know, Ruby's the first to go through the process, so we don't know how it'll play out. So yeah, looking at it from a human POV probably isn't the best way to look at it, cause it's not a process that's really meant for humans, it's meant for the Afterans, who don't really work from a human morality system or thought process, so to speak.

Failure is nothing to be scared or afraid of, what matters is if you can get right back up afterwards even after being beaten cause there's a benefit to losing, you get to learn from your mistakes.

What!?!? Did this come out of left field for anyone else? I NEVER got the impression Jaune was doing this for some "rush". He was doing it from the trauma of failing to save people before. If there was some "rush" for him shouldn't he have some sort of reaction from the saving? I don't see Jaune as someone who rescues people for the rush, but because it's the right thing to do.

To answer your question you have to think about his entire character.
He's a guy that wants the thrill of being a hero, a savior, the knight in shining armor. He glorified a fantasy version of himself being the hero of light that cuts away the darkness.
He lied his way into beacon because he couldn't hack it, he tried to get in legitimately but failed because the truth is he is not a hero at all. Especially in the begining, he was a coward and easily frightened.
He works on that, and has a heart of gold, but it doesn't change the fact that everything he has done from the begining was to fulfill a fantasy.
His entire character arc is basically represented on his body as his armor. From a shining and bright white to heavily rusted, broken, and barely functioning.
The tldr here is that he has always had a savior/hero complex that was very present in his introduction, and persisted all throughout the series.
I honestly think it is both. He thought of himself a failure, to not be able to save anyone, especially after Penny. And that solidified when he thought he was failing to be the Rusted Knight from the story.
When he saves the Paper Pleasers, he found a coping mechanism, that rush of saving someone. It's only through this scene, and words from someone he actually DID save, that snaps him out of it.

When you have failed and been lost, sometimes you come to the wrong conclusions.
"I wanted the rush of rescuing someone" is not what he meant. He seems to still be telling himself lies or skirting around the problem.
To me, he is saying "I wanted to be certain i could keep someone safe".
Remember, he has accepted he couldnt save the paper pleasers... but that doesnt mean he has accepted he couldnt save the others. "He wants to fill the rush" that he can still do so somehow.
Replace 'rush' with 'feeling' and it makes more sense at a glance, but either wording is valid. Jaune is like Ruby; he wants to save the day and know he helped people in a truly meaningful way. He's always wanted to be a hero, the brave and strong knight that conquers evil and protects the weak, but he's fallen short of that aspiration time and again, just like Ruby, and it's made him desperate to actually fulfill it, pushing him into a dangerous headspace. Seeing that he doesn't need to be a guardian for everyone, especially those that ultimately don't need rescuing, has helped him come to terms with that, because he knows he doesn't ALWAYS need to be the hero to actually be one.
This scene still gives me mixed feelings. Yeah it's nice for the moment Jaune gets, but come on. Ruby basically just offed herself and they're all hugging and acting like it's fine
Weiss isn't she was still frowning when she went into the hug, only smiling slightly when she left it, blake and Yang on the other hand..., Weiss should be more depressed honestly she didn't be the best teammate...but at least she is behaving more emotionally..blake and Yang...i have zero clue I hate it..

They already know she's not death. They only saw Ruby drinking a cup of tea and then get swallowed by the ground, just like it happened with Herb, so they know she's at The Tree.

@@glibchubik4090 since the beginning of civilization, humans have used the "they aren't people" reasoning to excuse all kinds of atrocities and apathetic behavior.
Jaune wasn't supposed to grow that attached to them. Those bonds were developed because he held them back from moving on. They were paper people living in a paper-phobic world and once their purpose was completed, life would happen and they would be reborn. The metaphor isn't "kill yourself and get a power up" and they didn't die. Their work had long since been complete. That's the whole point of the Ever After.
Jaune's attachment wasn't healthy and he was causing imbalance by preventing life from moving on. And he was holding himself back in doing so. It's a literal metaphor for the cycle of acceptance and moving forward.

Memory is the key for "humans". Our life experiences are basically our existence.
For afterans their purpose is their existence.
Purpose is more important than anything else, including past memories that might interfere with their new purpose post ascension and so they discard them as unnecessary.
The blacksmith all but confirms that only what Ruby wants to happen to her will actually happen so she's only losing her memories if she willingly discards them to start over from scratch.

They didnt really die, you can still tell its them, even if they are different. Imagine someone you know gets memory loss. Do they stop being themselves? That would be ridicules. They might behave a bit differently because they cant remember stuff but that doesnt mean they stop being themselves, and its the same for the afterans. They are still themselves, just different

While I like the scene I feel like it should have come later in the volume and happened at the same time Ruby reunites with Somewhat aka Little one, this way both Ruby and Juane could reunite with the friends they made in the Ever After and we could have a really emotional goodbye. I feel like if they done that and then had the characters *actually* be worried about Ruby here less people would complain

Bro there's no way that was the point of jaune's character arc. It wasn't no dumb self gratifying power fantasy to always be the hero, it was about a broken man trying his hardest to not lose the only people he cared about in a world not his own.
No yeah when I heard his reason for fighting, I got fuckin pissed of by the writing team, the indicators through out the show, show him struggling with who he wants to be and who he is, because in reality saving people is the only thing that brings him any sense of joy, so what I think his arc should ve been was him choosing between the man he wants to be and the person he is to protect what he still has and not lose it
Can both not be true at the same time? Do you not remember volume 1 how he talked about his family? It must be difficult trying this hard to get upset about things.
"They’ve all lost. But they were still incredibly brave. And good."
That line would mean more if the heroes had actual victories, instead of a stream of almost nothing but failures.
Wiess should date Jaune, he needs that now more than ever.
I really hope that hug between Jaune and Weiss is one small step that will lead to something more. They need each other. They're just too good together
Jaune really went through the five stages of grief this season:
Denial of his circumstances as he initially rusted
Anger at the Cat and his outbursts with the team
Bargaining with saving the paper pleasers
Depression should be self explanatory
