The Justice League x RWBY Crossovers films are... unfortunate.

  • I finally get around to reviewing the Justice League x RWBY cross overs. For reasons too arcane for my TH-camr brain, these somehow exist for reasons. And it is rather unfortunate they don't quite live up to their potential.

    My problems with two movies are these:
    -P1: Shipping. Look, I know everyone likes Knightlight (Jessica and Jaune) but if in order to have that, I needed Cyborg getting between Nora and Ren and Batman acting all weird towards Wonder Woman, I would prefer no shipping. Seriously, why is there romance between characters that are never going to meet one another?
    -P2: Yang being concerned over Ruby and Weiss regret over the fall of Atlas. My problem isn't with the moments itself, but more where. Why are these moments in a non-canon movie and not in V9? Considering the timing of release, I can't help but feel this was intentional so that they had some sort of B plot in the movie
    It's so weird that we had a Volume and two movies this year, yet I feel like we progressed nothing.

    • @DocMicrowave
      @DocMicrowave 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Agree with you on both points.
      First off, why all the Shipping? Because despite this being a cross over movie, A portion of the RWBY fandom pretty much live-for-the-ship. This kind of thing goes on alot in RWBY as of late. Many in that part of the fandom don't know what it is to be friends, teammates, a brotherhood, sisterhood. Everyone is a potential ship, will get shipped, or be ship teased. So the writers obviously injected that stuff into the movies. I don't know what DC fans are use too in their media, but this is par for the course in RWBY.
      Second, fully agree. Those concerns and regrets over the fall of Atlas should have absolutely been addressed in the main show. Perhaps they stuck into the movies as a way of not having to spend time addressing it in the regular show. Especially seeings how rushed the last few volumes have been. No time to really flesh things out. It's almost like they realized RWBY does not have much time left.
      Ah, right, RT is out of money now. No green light for V10. RWBY's future is up in the air.

    • @DocMicrowave

    • @nagger8216
      @nagger8216 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Eh, RWBY has always dragged its heels as much as possible when it comes to progressing the story, so that's not new. I mean, no one goes back to watch volume 2, and that's because nothing happens in it. The only reason people liked volume 3 so much was because it was the only time shit actually started to happen since the first few episodes of the series. And what do you know, right after that it's about everyone jacking off in the woods for an entire season. It's like getting one slice of pizza for every loaf of bread you consume. No thanks, I'll just skip to the pizza.

    • @Diogo85
      @Diogo85 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DocMicrowaveI don't think Volume 9 or 7 was rushed.
      I think RWBY volume 10 will eventually get greenlit as they already started writing the scripts a while ago unless it gets cancelled, that is, which I don't happening.

    • @DocMicrowave
      @DocMicrowave 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@Diogo85 I felt V7 and V9 (as well as V8) were very rushed. For V7 what I see as rushed is scenes skipped over, details left out, not to mention a few, what I call "they were there, now they are here" moments with no explanation as to the journey. Either to save time and animation resources, or just because there would have been no rational or logical way of explaining a change or movement. They needed to move the story along, and that's it.
      V8 was the same thing, but much worse. I have a feeling CRWBY knew RWBY's days were numbered and moved to accelerate the story to get them out of Atlas and into Vaccuo as quickly as possible. That basically bucks, I recall, an early idea for the series in its planing stages after V1, that the show runners were putting together a basic framework of 12 volumes comprised of four 3 volume arcs. Each arc would be focused mostly on one of the four Kingdoms/Maidens/Relics. That seemed to be tracking up until the Atlas arc.
      And V9 was totally rushed. In fact, they ran out of money and had to cut it short by like 2+ chapters. Forcing them to re-edit and rewrite stuff so that the story can fit into a shorter volume.
      Also, take whatever RT/CRWBY says publicly with a grain of salt concerning production. They will say anything to promote (or keep) business and interest. When V8 ended, they had claimed that V9 was already written, and well into production. Then came the excuses, primary of which was delays because of Covid. Then other delays, then silence. For 2 years! Only to have the show runners admit that V9 was delayed mainly because of production on the DC movies.
      So to me, saying V10 is written, or being written means little to nothing. Since RT is broke, they have no staff, animators, VAs, no green light from their corporate masters, WB. The fact that they are literally begging what's left of the fandom for money. Combine all that with the fact that they have been .......... let's say less than accurate about what they are working on.
      Even if some very generous multi-millionare decided to fund RWBY, it would still be at least 2 years before you saw anything.
      Yeah, them saying V10 is being written is obviously a last resort attempt to hold on to what's left of a deminishing fandom. Slow the loss of Subs. As well as trying to move stagnating merch off the shelves. Sorry to say.

    A love triangle? In a set of crossover movies whole canonicity is dubious at best? WHY? From the onset, it's obvious it's not gonna be something that carries on forward, not gonna go anywhere, matter in the long run or affect things like the status quo. It should have been obvious from the idea pitch that it was gonna be a waste of time

    • @DocMicrowave
      @DocMicrowave 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      A couple of reasons. These might have been crossover movies, but RWBY is still at their core. So are the writing mentalities associated with the show as of the last few volumes. Ship Ship Ship! The writers are used to appeasing the 'live-for-the-ship' part of the fandom in RWBY. It's not surprising that stuff would make it into the movies.
      Second, Renora has been cooled. So they obviously feel its ok to screw around with the ship. (Rest assured, this kind of thing would never happen to BB). Just one of the few ships (teases) they threw around in the movies.

The reason I ship characters because I want them to end up together, because I think they'd be good for each other, and I want them to end up together so I can see them being cute with each other. I want to see the couple being properly formed and explored, and on a lighter tone being cute and lovey dovey. I don't want to see an annoying love triangle whose result was obvious from moment 1, making it ultimately pointless and a waste of time, and it will only accomplish is delay the two people getting together and being together, wasting precious screen time (or, God forbid, a harem where each member will ultimately lose all semblance -heh- of their original personality, making their entire character to revolve around fighting for the main lead, stepping over each other and stopping any hint of relationship progression)

    • @DocMicrowave
      @DocMicrowave 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@Diogo85 I beg to differ. CRWBY knows (some of) RWBY fans love to ship. Even if a ship is not meant to come to reality. CRWBY watches and reads social media. They are under the impression that shipping, or even Ship-teasing sells. Generates interest. So what do we get?
      Qrow and Clover teased for almost an entire volume. Oscar and Ruby lightly teased. (Weird but whatever. I think they gave up on Weiss). Most recently Jaune and Weiss teased.
      And of course, the biggest one of them all, Blake and Yang. Teased so hard it ruined both characters, and put a fair amount of damage on the writing quality.
      Now don't get me wrong. Shipping is not necessarily a bad thing. Especially if it is an essential part of a story. And that it is done right. I did not mean to say the last few volumes were ALL about shipping. But it played a big part.
      But to stick it in for fanservice (and that is exactly what CRWBY is doing) to the point where it just wastes time, detracts from the main story, or worse, forces a story in illogical or ridiculous directions just to highlight the Ship or the tease, that's when it becomes a problem.
      But that is just me. Mileage for others may differ. Other people may love that kind of stuff, regardless of the writing. I am not calling them out. What ever rows their boat.
      I am looking at what such forced shipping does to an overal plot that is meant to be more logical or serious in nature.
      Anyway, I digress.
      Concerning BumbleBee being "planned from the beginning". I don't by it. In fact I buy little CRWBY has to say now a days. They will say anything to try hide mistakes, or support new directives. It's just business.
      Saying something Well after the fact to try to support current narratives does not hold any water for me.
      Saying that BB was planned from the beginning 10 years later is just a cheap attempt to cover the past. Most long time RWBY fans remember that it was stated back around V1-2 that the intention for RWBY was to be a sisterhood. But that the main characters would/could have relations with other people out side of the team.
      Coming out with this statement after the fact has about as much weight as CRWBY revealing Ironwood's semblance in a podcast well after V8 ended, in an attempt to explain his evil turn to fans that questioned it. Or trying to explain away Oscar's sucker punch on the untouchable Neo as an animation error.
      CRWBY will say anything to support current directions, or to quell controversy over such directions.
      Obviously CRWBY, as well as they favorite fans, BB shippers, are still bothered by Blacksunn issues, as well as early depictions of Blake and Yang.
      And we all know CRWBY is about keeping those fans happy, what ever the cost.
      Well, it has cost them big..

      @@clojcloj You say that, but in those same comics, he's already fought his family multiple times over petty reasons, or dismissed them. He regularly does things that are selfish and put his own family in harm's way for his own benefit. He most recently did this in Gotham War. He's also known for ostracizing his allies (it's part of why the multiverse nearly ended in Death Metal, because he had to insist on researching strange metal in isolation), and he has more contingencies prepared against his friends than his enemies. As far as the superpower envy goes, that's ambiguous at best considering alternate versions of him have envied those with powers and then usually went full-on supervillain the moment they got them. He's also not against having them for himself and will use them when circumstances allow for it, which he did, again, in Death Metal.
      Let's not insist Batman is this wholesome, family-oriented character who doesn't have a chip on his shoulder about superpowers. His own writers went out of their way to establish him as anything but those things.

      Imagine if this movie is the ending to RWBY.
      Watts is the final boss of RWBY with his two stupid robot arms. Watts. WATTS. The man that uploaded himself to WB's IP folder and accidentally tripped into the DC IP. And his weakness was being told he's stupid. This movie acts as a Vaccuo epilogue, and bookends Ruby's Volume 9 demonization arc. And all Jessica wanted to do was just chill with Jaune and laugh at his grey hair. If this is the ending this is both so damn funny and also a horrible loss to the RWBY story.
      Volume 10 please become a reality save me from this place. I want a real ending so I can someday look back on this as the hilarious joke ending.

    The biggest problem is they write littlerally every justice league character out of character, especially Batman. The idea of batman being tempted to leave the dc universe because he’d be able to “do some real good” in rwby made my skin crawl. They also imply the rwby crew had it harder because they’re child soldiers… ignoring the fact Batman started his training around the same age they would have because of the ptsd he got from having his family murderd. He went through insane levels of physical and mental training to start a one man war and he did it without a real support net or powers.

    Yeah Bruce caring about powers doesn't really make sense on 2 levels. First his greatest asset is his mind. He's the guy that if you let live for too long, he'll figure out a way. Which leads into the second point, he's defeated gods without powers. So why would he care about what he got in RWBY? Like one famous Batman story was when a baddy got into his computer and proceeded to use his plans to take out the Justice League. Those plans worked really well as it turned out. Plus, it's just not DC. It's rare any hero gets paralyzed by not having powers. They are heroes in part because they will rise to their duty in spite of them. Like even Superman will be up against people he normally fights with powers and even without them he doesn't flinch. So for Bats to abandon Gotham for powers really isn't a thing he would think about.

It's just a shame that it feels like they don't care to/want to put in the effort to make it as good as it has been shown to be. About 15 minutes in we see Weiss’s favorite contacts in her scroll. I saw the picture for Maria and burst out in gut busting laughter. That single little profile pictured capture that old lady Maria energy so well I just couldn’t get over it.
    Later as we see the villains join in on stopping the Grimm we get a shot from behind of Harley and Joker sipping drinks watching the chaos. I got a solid chuckle out of that.
    Ruby herself got some great combat moments. I liked her takedown of the king taijitu was fun. And her teleportation trick to save Flash from becoming Grimm food and simultaneously redirecting a fire blast back at the Grimm that spewed it? Chef’s kiss.

    I don't mind the films looking at them now part one was just okay I give it a 4 out of 10 part 2 was actually better especially considering it covered some topics that fans really want to see and that we hope we see in volume 10 even though I'm not sure if we'll have time for that due to the fact that we have
    like 50 something characters and there are a lot of past characters that will be in volume 10 including new characters that we're going to get and other characters
    So they might not have time to fully cover everybody's arcs like they need to especially considering their characters we haven't seen in almost 3 years now who's arcs are still going on or just finally getting started like Nora's
    And even ran and emeralds plus there are arcs that are at like the Middle point with Oscar and his merge
    At best I think we might have a little time skip when we get back
    In all honesty I don't mind these movies I just wish instead of these movies these movies have may be covered the backstories on characters we haven't had time to get to know or who's arcs need more flushing out and that we don't have enough time to spend with you know like Oscar Nora emerald maybe see a movie about oz and Salem give me more on their story it's been like three volumes and I don't think one episode really is enough to cover the full backstory and lower of this show we need a bit more
    I do admit I like the character designs we got for everybody and part 2 I don't know why they didn't have John in part 2 of the movies a lot of people were disappointed he wasn't on them
    And ever since we got the final movie I've been seeing a lot more people who was seemed upset and disappointed because we still don't know what going to happen with volume 10 and when we're getting it and even if it got green lit right now
    We probably wouldn't get volume 10 till the beginning of 2025

Strangely dunno why you said volume 7 when they mentioned the death of Watts in the film which happened during volume 8 when Atlas is set on fire this crossover has me honestly wondering if in this continuity volume 9 didn't happen because it honestly doesn't really leave much room for volume 9 to have happened how it happened in volume 8 of the show proper since in part 2 there are seemingly immediately in Vacuo when in the show proper they haven't even really gotten there yet with just leaving the wonderland realm.

      Maybe I wasn't clear, but the timeline comment was in regards to Part 1 only. At the end they wake up in what appears to be an Atlesian lab talking about a training mission. This would've needed to have taken place during a time of relative calm, before Watts & Tyrian made their move on the night of the election. There wouldn't have been time to take a breather to train since everything went off the rails starting at that point.
      Part 2 appears to have been sometime after V9. Blake remarks that "it's been weeks," since they last saw the JL, which would've been enough time for the events of V8 and 9 to have happened. V8 was only a couple of days in terms of story chronology, and V9 to just before V10 IMO plausibly could've been a few weeks, if the deleted V9 epilogue is something to go by. Also, some of Part 2's dialogue seems to be tip-toeing around Ruby's mental health situation.

Having the Justice League characters be versions of them FROM Remnant instead of being the real Justice League. Except for Jessica, who’s basically the key to the comics plot, and her being from another dimension is important for it.

    #3 part 2 was better but I did not like Jessica, Vixen and Black Cannary for they where uninteresting and killgore still sucks.
    #4 they really could of used a better villian like Lex, Brainiact, most evil flashes, and so on. Killgore is no Spot.

    The only good thing to come out of this crossover was Knightlight (aka jaune x jessica) tbh. Its my favorite jaune ship. Yes, even over him and Pyrrha.

    I remember watching the movie the first part, and I loved it, and I hated it at the same time. Don’t give me wrong. I love RWBY.

    Idk why ppl arent excited for it but maybe thats because i like animation and there has been a drought in dc content on screen, but i enjoyed it but i mean iw asnt expecting to come out with some nee profound perspective on life, animation, or fictional media

    Hey we already went over it in the crossover films...
    That seems to be most of the answer sadly.
    Vol 9 addressing the fall of Atlas, Jaune's depression, Ruby's struggle, how Weiss is dealing with it... Or most character arcs?
    All of it skipped.
    Movie 1 addressed Jaune's issues (before atlas fall) which was more than what vol 9 did.
    He just got written off as crazy and had a bad time before the reset button was pressed on him.
    Vol 9 Ruby had to address the issue of her feeling guilty about what happened before learning she was perfect all along and self reflection of her mistakes was for losers.
    After all that character growth and chance for change or understanding had to be saved for the movie.
    Weiss was comic relief in vol 9 not even addressing how her home, life, family, and everything she knew could be gone now.
    Movie Weiss had those issues.
    Yet both movie and volume ended the same... Did this effective the wider story at all? Nope.
    Vol 9 was a filler arc as the only change was them thinking it was time to stop teasing a ship and to confirm or stop.
    They had magic tree leaves that when burned could make someone face their issues (or lack of issues if you are team RWBY) and an immortal enemy who can't die unless she faces her issues, has the world vaporized, or the Gods of their world fixing the problem.
    Seriously! Grab a branch! Make tea drinks and shove it down her throat or have the (no longer having issues) team rwby trying holding her within the mist and fight off the grim as the cloud forces the grim lady to deal with her issues!
    A cannon win button right there used against an enemy even... And then just ditched because it could actually meant something!
    Seriously you could have skipped volume 9 and watched these two movies instead! It would have been shorter and you would have come out with a lot more stuff happening!
    Seriously! Nothing happened in volume 9! Any chance for revelation, character moments, or information was literally skipped over!

    Hey I don't think they're unfortunate. I thought they were fun, just dumb fun. A strange crossover but a fun story.

    You know I wasn't that mad at the writing? I went in expecting the worst. Something like batman hushed but I got Batman the brave and the bold instead. Not the best but not as bad as I thought it would be.

    first off I think the problem with all crossovers is they know it well never be revisited, but don't do much with the fan service. Example batman and
    TMNT have a cross over Good movie but Casey, April, and master splinter never meet batman which I think would have been cool especially if it was from the 2012 universe. This cross over we never see characters like, sun and crow and Oscar, and many more. That said both that problem and those listed in this vid. Could have been solved if this was a series. Imagine postpone all production on the main RWBY I mean rooster teeth is going bankrupt anyways sooooo put everything into this hail marry with DC comics and WB and maybe all three can benefit. 26-50 eps, half in remnent and half in the DC world. In the first half escape with in the first 3 eps. then explored the world. With moments including key characters that both honors who they are in canon and serves the story. Then basically the same thing in the second half just in the DC verse. I mean we could have had the story go off planet have ruby get a blue lantern ring for a bit, yang could get a red one. then the last 4-5 eps would be the final battle with increasing stakes. I'll admit I'm not a pro writer so in short I'm saying if you know you're never going to do this again go all out give fans everything. Most if not all of these problems exist because time constraint forbid them from being fully explored. Such as Blake not being a faunas if yang got hurt in a way that Blake could have prevented had she been a fanuas would have been a great pay off.

      @@nagger8216 Troy Baker didn't voice Batman in Arkham Origins, Arkham Origins Batman's Va is the current Sonic's va(besides LA movies that is a different guy).Troy Baker voiced Joker in Origins tho.He also voiced both Batman and Joker in Batman vs TMNT movie.

    The Yang and Flash scene was by far the worst part of the movie.
    It makes Flash look weak to give Yang something to do. Flash lost so much more that he can never get back. Yang lost an arm. An arm that was easily replaced. FOR FREE.
    Flash lost both parents in one day. He lost his girlfriend. He lost his sidekick. That’s just scratching the surface of his suffering.
    So hearing Yang act like the authority on trauma and loss because she got a war wound makes me feel like the writers either never suffered more than their coffee shop being closed or they just don’t know who the Flash is.
